A block library to
inspire and instruct
quilters of all levels
COMING AUGUST 2016
A rich compendium of well-loved blocks
About the Book
In one volume, quilters will find over 200 classic blocks that they can use
to hone their sewing skills, in block exchanges or to create wonderful block
sampler quilts. In this impressive collection, the author organizes the blocks
in groups of 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4, and 6 × 6 grids with instructions and math
provided for 6-, 9- and 12-inch blocks. This book is a block library that will
be a quilter’s go-to source for reference, inspiration and instruction.
With the exception of a few that were designed by the author, the block
designs are all nearly 100 years old. Some designs are still sewn to this day,
but many deserve new recognition and use by today’s quilters.
Includes instructions on constructing half-square and quarter-square
triangles, flying geese, square-in-a-squares and parallel blocks.
A browser’s delight: the four-color photography provides color and
fabric-choice inspiration to quilters, and each block’s evocative name
recalls quilting’s rich history.
kk Clear instructions and expert advice: exploded diagrams of each block
make construction a snap without special rulers. Tips on fabric selection,
color choice, cutting, pressing and sewing
kk No math: Th
e author provides accurate dimensions for each cut so that
quilters can easily size their blocks for 6-, 9- or 12-inches

About the author
Bright & Bold Wool Appliqué
Needle artist Angela Lawrence has taught needleturn
appliqué throughout the Midwest since 1998. With a
degree in education, it was natural for her to combine her
love of teaching with her passion for quilting. Although
she enjoys all aspects of quilting, her passion is “love of
the stitch” as expressed in needleturn appliqué.

The blanket and whip stitch are two of the most
commonly used stitches for attaching wool
appliqué shapes to the background fabric.
Blanket Stitch
The blanket stitch gives a nice finished look
to the wool edge. It is a decorative stitch with a
raised appearance. Use a two-strand embroidery
floss or a size 8 or 12 perle cotton thread. The
color of your thread can match the color of
the appliqué fabric or use a complementary
color to enhance the appliqué. The size of the
stitch should be proportional to the size of the
wool appliqué shape. For example, the smaller
the wool shape, the smaller the blanket stitch.
Through experience you will learn to visually
control the size and depth of the blanket stitch.
3. Place the circle units on the table runner front
following the photo on page 36.

Whip Stitch
The whip stitch is used as a utility stitch and not
as a decorative stitch. It is often used on small
appliqué wool pieces that do not have room
for a more decorative stitch. It works well in
conjunction with other decorative stitches. Use
one strand of embroidery floss or a size 12 perle
cotton or wool thread. The thread color should
match the color of the appliqué shape.
When working with a detailed appliqué
design, the appliqué shapes are often layered.
This means that one shape rests on top of
or is partially layered on another shape. The
layering will determine the order in which
shapes are sewn to the background. When
layering occurs, it is necessary to add 1/4"
seam allowance to the wool piece that will be
tucked under another wool shape. All layered
shapes in the projects in this book have a 1/4"
seam allowance added. Follow the placement
diagrams to layer the shapes.
Dig into your wool stash to make this large table runner. It requires a wide assortment of colors, so it’s a
perfect stash-buster. The shapes are layered to create detailed circular units. These units can be stitched
together individually and then sewn to the wool background fabric.

Tear off the fusible paper, position the wool
appliqué shape (fusible side down) on the wool
or cotton background and iron in place. Stitch
the shape to the background.
Note: Some stabilizers are not heavy enough
to adhere to a wool background in which case
appliqué pins will be needed.

Gypsy jazz, also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz,
originated in France where many of the musicians worked
in Paris in musical ensembles. The Musette-style waltz
is a precursor to gypsy jazz and remains an important
component. It combines a dark gypsy musical f lavor with
the bright swing music popular in the 1930s. The Gypsy
Jazz quilt has the f lavor of dark and bright as the partial
hexagons swing in colorful rows.

from one side of the quilt to the other.
