Die zweitgrösste Stadt Kanadas, 1642 als katholische Mission Fort Ville-Marie von der französischen Krone gegründet, liegt auf einer Insel am Zusammenfluss des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms und des Ottawa-Flusses. Das Stadtbild wird
vom Mont Royal geprägt, einem 233 Meter hohen Hügelzug
vulkanischen Ursprungs, von dem sich der Name der Stadt
ableitet. Montreal gehört zur Provinz Québec, die bis heute eine Sprachinsel im weitgehend englischsprachigen
Nordamerika geblieben ist (Hauptsprache ist Französisch).
Die weltoffene Metropole mit zahlreichen Grünflächen
und Parkanlagen bildet mit ihren 1,7 Millionen Einwohnern (3,8 Millionen im gesamten Einzugsgebiet) einen

Founded in 1642 under the French crown as the Catholic
mission of Fort Ville-Marie on an island at the confluence of
the Ottawa River and the St Lawrence River, Montreal is today Canada’s second-biggest city. The city’s dominant landmark is Mont Royal. Volcanic in origin, the range of hills
from which the city takes its name rises to a height of 233
metres. Montreal lies within the province of Quebec, a
French-speaking region within largely English-speaking
North America. Boasting numerous green spaces and parks,
cosmopolitan Montreal is a cultural melting pot with a
­po­pu­­­lation of some 1.7 million (rising to 3.8 million if the
entire catchment area is considered) whose various ethnic
communities form a rich urban mosaic.

Der Rideau Canal, ein monumentales Bauwerk aus dem
19. Jahrhundert, führt über
202 Kilometer von Ottawa in
südlicher Richtung nach
Kingston Harbour am

und Cataraqui. Mit dem Bau
