Little Goose by David Mraz PICTURE BOOK—APRIL | Illustrations by Margot Apple Round things like pebbles and puddles and marbles and bubbles remind Little Goose of something, but he can’t remember what it is. So he sets off on a journey in order to recall the special feeling he gets when he sees baskets and buckets and balls that roll. But Turtle’s round rock isn’t quite right, and neither are the flies that buzz ’round Frog’s head, nor Mouse’s round house, deep down in a hole. Only when he returns home does Little Goose remember what makes him feel cozy and comfy, and happy, too: that most special place within the soft circle of his mama’s wings. This timeless tale of coming home to a mother’s love will ring true with explorers of all ages. 101/4 x 10 inches, 32 pages full color, ages 3 to 5 $15.99 HC (Can $18.50) ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-190-8 1-58246-190-2 DAVID MRAZ is a retired teacher, father of two, and grandfather of one. In a career spanning almost three decades, award-winning illustrator and author Margot Apple has brought to life the texts of more than fifty books for children, including the bestselling Sheep in a Jeep series. Elisa and her family live in Albany, California. To date, she has written and illustrated thirteen books and illustrated fifteen others. 4 • A Carousel Tale by Elisa Kleven Ernst loves the carousel near his house, and his favorite animal to ride is the dog. When the dog’s wooden tail comes loose just before winter, the carousel keeper gives Ernst the important job of watching over it until springtime. But the tail looks so sad sitting on Ernst’s shelf without its dog that Ernst can’t help but try to cheer it up. It isn’t long before he has transformed the lonely tail into something wonderful! As spring approaches, Ernst wonders if he will have to give up his special creation. And if he doesn’t, what will the poor dog have to wag? The inventive blue crocodile from Ernst and The Puddle Pail shines in a story children will cherish. Ten-year-old Jacob would give anything to show those Yankees that not all Confederates are ready to surrender. He gets his chance when he sees a real, live Yankee soldier walking down his street, on leave for Passover. But before Jacob can think of a way to be brave, the Yankee asks for a piece of his matzoh! This beautiful, engaging story about a Jewish Yankee soldier joining a Southern family’s Passover meal features a remarkable discussion about what it means to be free—a topic as relevant today as it was during the War between the States and during the Exodus. ELKA WEBER loves making history come alive. She has taught history in both high school and college and authored nonfiction works for adults. Brand New Emily FICTION—JUNE by Ginger Rue Everyone at Wright Middle School knows you should not make an enemy of the uber-clique that fourteen-year-old Emily Wood calls The Daisies. But that’s exactly what she has done, and now she’s paying the price. . . until Emily stumbles onto some top-secret gossip about a teen heartthrob and finds herself in the good graces of a top New York PR firm. Now—with an ace publicist in her corner—make way for Brand Em: She’s got style, she’s got attitude, and her troubles at school are a thing of the past! But no product can stay hot forever, and it isn’t long before Emily discovers the limits of brand loyalty. In her first novel, Ginger Rue captures perfectly the desire to be part of the in-crowd. And while the solution to Emily’s problems may be every teen’s fantasy, readers will cheer as the once-bullied girl finds her way back to her true self. Noreen J. Wolfe looked at the people seated around the table and snickered. “You want to hire me? That’s rich. Is this some sort of practical joke? Did one of you put her up to this?” Then the smile left her face. “I hate practical jokes. Whoever did this is fired.” “It’s not a joke,” I said. “I have money—$3250!” “Well, since you have $3250, then I guess that’s a different story,” she said. “That should almost cover the five minutes of my time you’ve just wasted. Pay at the desk on your way out.” Brynn was hiding her face behind her hands. “But I really need your services,” I said. “You create public opinion. I read about you. You’re like magic—you can do anything. I need your help . . . desperately.” “Alright, young lady,” Noreen said. “I’ll tell you what. Hazen Susan Taylor Brown Fifteen-year-old Shifty knows all about moving around and next to nothing about where he came from. When he’s assigned to a new foster home and family, he struggles to find a balance between the street-wise spirit that has helped him survive and his longing for a place to call home. “Presented in brief, free-verse poem, this is a poignant character study.” I like how Martha is all trusting of me. Not too many people trust me like that. No one besides Martha, in fact. I got a whole file full of people saying how I’m shifty and not to be trusted. But Martha, she trusts the good in people, even when the bad part is showing up more than anything else. When I first came to Martha’s house, she asked me if I had a driving permit. I said yeah. She never asked if the permit had my name on it, or if I was old enough to drive. I’m old enough. Just not according to the State of California. So I can’t exactly tell Martha that the permit isn’t mine. It’s not my fault I’m tall and I look older than fifteen. I was just helping out Wired at my last group home. He needed all the help he could get. I took the written test for him at the DMV and I only got three wrong. Wired never would’ve passed. He was so grateful he gave me a copy of his permit. Of course the permit has Wired’s name on it—his real name, Franklin. The flimsy black-and-white photo is faded and doesn’t look much like me unless I tilt my chin up and smile with all my teeth showing, just like Wired does. Luckily Martha’s eyesight isn’t all that good. And now, with her leg bothering her, it seems a shame to all of a sudden tell Martha that I can’t get my own real permit until I’m fifteen and a half. That’s five months from now. I like driving and I’m good at it. Besides, Martha keeps saying she needs my help since she’s so busy with that jittery baby-first crack baby. And I’m not the only one bending the rules. I looked in Martha’s wallet. Her license is expired too. from Shifty 3 8 • Tricycle Press • www.tricyclepress.com —School Library Journal 2007 Notable Children’s Book, American Library Association VOYA magazine’s Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Readers Notable Children’s Book in the English Language Arts, Realistic Fiction, NCTE The Best Children’s Books of the Year Selection, Bank Street College of Education The BossQueen, Little BigBark, and the Sentinel Pup Sarah Clark Jordan “Readers will be rewarded by this keenly observed and artfully crafted tale of canine, human, and feline cohabitation.” Time Bomb Nigel Hinton “Hinton has created a compelling story about the impact of secrets and the complexities of friendship.” —SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL Accelerated Reader H Publishers Weekly Outstanding International Books for 2007, USBBYP-CBC 51/2 x 8 inches, 144 pages ages 8 to 11 $14.95 HC (Can $19.95) ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-115-1 1-58246-115-5 t see PB edition on page 45 51/2 x 81/4 inches, 288 pages ages 10 to 13 $15.95 HC ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-186-1 1-58246-186-4, NAXCan t see PB edition on page 45 —School Library Journal backlist paperback picture books Hairy Maclary and Slinky Malinki Lynley Dodd 9 x 6 3/4 inches, full color, ages 2 to 4, $5.95 PB, NAXCan More Than 4 Million Lynley Dodd Books Sold Worldwide Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy Slinky Malinki Accelerated Reader 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-148-9 1-58246-148-1 36 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-059-8 1-58246-059-0 Hairy Maclary’s Bone Accelerated Reader Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack Slinky Malinki, Open the Door 36 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-060-4 1-58246-060-4 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-147-2 1-58246-147-3 Accelerated Reader Hairy Maclary’s Rumpus at the Vet Hairy Maclary Scattercat Accelerated Reader Hairy Maclary’s Showbusiness Accelerated Reader 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-095-6 1-58246-095-7 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-208-0 1-58246-208-9 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-094-9 1-58246-094-9 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-176-2 1-58246-176-7 Slinky Malinki Catflaps Accelerated Reader 32 pages ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-175-5 1-58246-175-9 Illustration by Lynley Dodd from Hairy Maclary’s Showbusiness. 800-841-2665 • [email protected] • 39 backlist paperback picture books The Noisy Airplane Ride Tub Toys Sarah’s Story Mike Downs Illustrations by David Gordon Terry Miller Shannon & Timothy Warner Illustrations by Lee Calderon Bill Harley Illustrations by Eve Aldridge “A contribution both cogent and soothing to the scanty library of preflight, or in-flight, reading matter for young, infrequent flyers.” —Kirkus Reviews Accelerated Reader 101/2 x 91/2 inches, 32 pages full color, ages 4 to 7 $6.95 PB (Can $9.95) ISBN-13: 978-1-58246-157-1 1-58246-157-0 “With a passion approaching that of Ernie for his rubber ducky, the young narrator extols the joys of trotting out so many tub toys at bathtime that ‘there’s not a spot for me!’ . . .
