Hello everybody,
I am using the 14 hrs flight from Dubai to Brisbane
to write this up, so you get it from 35000 ft, we are
doing 567 mph, have crossed the equator and are
flying parallel to Jakarta, sort of.
But let’s start with the beginning. After “shutting
down” the house our first stop was Toulouse. Alan
fancied a “last meal” in France, ouups in the Irish
pub! Next morning it was time to take our first
flight. Destination London, where we had time to
catch up with Paul. Very early start the following
morning as our Emirates Airline chauffeur was
picking us up at 6 o’clock. The lounge is making
up for this early start. More like a luxury breakfast
room and everybody is sipping champagne with
their scramble eggs…….
The flight to Dubai on the upper deck of an A380
turns out to be the continuation of this pampering
new experience. We love it! Did you know that the
A380 is wider (79.8m) than long ( 72.7m) ,

Dubai nach Brisbane gibt
mir genuegend Zeit
meinen ersten Bericht zu
schreiben. Das heisst er
kommt aus ca 12000m
Hoehe waehrend wir mit
ca 800 km/Std
dahinduesen. Wir haben
den Aequator ueberquert
und sind jetzt auf der
Hoehe von Jakarta, na so ungefaehr halt!
Aber ich fange besser mit dem Anfang an…. Nachdem wir
unser Haus “winterfest” gemacht hatten war unser erster Halt
Toulouse, wo wir im irischen Pub den Beginn unserer Reise
mit einem Guiness begossen haben. Am naechsten Morgen
war’s dann Zeit fuer den ersten Flug. London war das Ziel , wo
wir uns mit Paul trafen. Frueh aufstehen hiess es am Dienstag,
unser Chauffeur der Emirates Airline holte uns um 6 Uhr ab!
Aber die tolle Lounge der Fluggesellschaft hat das dann gleich
wieder Wett gemacht!! Ziemlich vornehm mit einladendem
Fruehstuecksbuffet. Und alle schluerften sie genuesslich ihren
Sekt mit den Ruehreiern..
Auf dem FlugLondon – Dubai werden wir dann weiter heftig
verwoehnt – auf dem Oberdeck des A380 Airbusses. Wir sind
nur noch am geniessen. Wusstet Ihr, dass der A380 breiter
(79.8m) als lang ( 72.7m) ist, ueber 500 Passagiere fasst und
15000 km non-stop fliegen kann, beeindruckend oder?
Our arrival in Dubai was quite funny. Unbeknown to us it
was the first day in this job for our Emirates limo service
chauffeur. Despite several phone calls to his mates,
trying to get info about “location, location” as he repeated
desperately, we finally had to stop and ask a taxi driver
for directions to our hotel….. Took us only more than an
hour to get from the airport to the Hilton on the Beach.
Dubai is fascinating, having grown in less than 20 years
from a small town of about 20000 to today’s city of 2 ½
million people. With more skyscrapers than Manhattan it
also features the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the
world. At the same time it’s the biggest building site I
have ever seen. They have not finished by far. As the
temperatures were in the mid twenties we did a lot of
walking on the first day and took also the metro which
connects all the different areas of Dubai, the financial
district, the “internet” one, the business one and so on.
All has been built from scratch which means that the
infra structure like the roads, hospitals etc is brilliant.
What is really unbelievable is the amount of big and/or
fast cars. On each corner you find the Mercs, Porsches,
BMWs, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, Alan was in car
heaven!

Unsere Ankunft in Dubai war ganz lustig. Es war der
erste Tag in diesem Job fuer unseren Chauffeur.
Mehrmals rief er Kollegen an und rief ganz
verzweifelt ins Telephon “location, location!!” Nun ich
schlug vor mal anzuhalten und einen Taxifahrer zu
fragen. Uffi, nach mehr als ner Stunde hatten wir’s
dann vom Flughafen zum Hilton am Strand
geschafft!
Dubai ist faszinierend. In weniger als 20 Jahren
entwickelte es sich von einem “Dorf” mit 20000
Einwohnern zu einer Grosstadt mit 2 ½ Millionen. Es
hat mehr Wolkenkratzer als Manhattan, unter
anderem den Burj Khalifa, das hoechste Gebaeude
der Welt. Gleichzeitig ist diese Stadt die groesste
Baustelle, die ich jemals gesehen habe, die sind da
noch lange nicht fertig!!! Die Temperaturen waren
sehr angenehm, mitte 20, also haben wir am ersten
Tag viel zu Fuss erkundet. Aber wir haben auch die
Metro genommen , die die verschiedenen Bezirke
(Geschaefts-, Finanz-, Computer- bezirk etc.)
verbindet. Da diese Stadt von Grund auf neu erbaut
wurde ist die Infrastruktur ( wie Strassen,
Krankenhaeuser etc) sehr gut. Echt unglaublich ist
auch die Anzahl der “protzigen” Autos. An jeder
Ecke sieht man grosse Mercedes, Porsches, BMWs,
Ferraris, Lamborghinis. Mein Mann war im
Autohimmel!
On the second day we had booked a “private” tour, just
us with our guide Reda in a 4x4. We learnt a lot about
the short history of the place and its inhabitants, 90%
“expats”, not enough local skills. The Sheik apparently
a good ruler, no taxes, Dubai relatively open ( no
problems wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts, but
please no kissing in the street!!!). They don’t have
enough oil anymore to sustain the growth, so they are
now focusing on tourism but also aluminium production
and other things. The famous shopping malls are huge,
but we prefer the old fashioned souks. Talking old
fashioned, in the harbour we took the water taxi and
marvelled at the old wooden freight ships, still
transporting the goods around the gulf.
So much for today, I better get some sleep if I want to
be fit for our arrival in Brisbane where Jane and Mike
are waiting for us
Fuer den zweiten Tag hatten wir eine “private”
Tour gebucht, nur unser Fremdenfuehrer Reda
(halb Deutscher) und wir. Da lernten wir sehr viel
ueber die kurze Geschichte der Stadt und ihrer
Bewohner, 90% Auslaender (nicht genuegend
einheimische Fachkraefte). Der Scheich ist wohl
ein guter “Landesvater”, keine Steuern und
Dubai nimmt es auch sonst etwas lockerer als
seine islamischen Nachbarn ( also Shorts und
aermellose Bluse sind kein Problem, nur
kuessen auf der Strasse ist strengstens
untersagt!!!).
Heute hat Dubai ncht mehr genug Erdoel um
seinen Wachstum weiter voranzutreiben. Sie
konzentrieren sich jetzt auf Tourismus, aber
auch Aluminiumproduktion und etliche andere
Dinge.
Die weltweit beruehmten Einkaufszentren sind
gigantisch (ueber 1000, tausend,Geschaefte),
aber uns gefallen die altmodischen Souks
besser. Apropos altmodisch. Im Hafen, wo wir
auch das Wassertaxi genommen haben gab’s
viele viele der altmodischen Holzfrachter. Die
transportieren immer noch ihre Frachten im
persischen Golf.
Ich muss fuer heute Schluss machen und etwas
schlafen, damit ich bei unserer Ankunt in
Brisbane einigermassen fit bin um Jane und
Mike zu begruessen
