An entire class of schoolchildren from Basle takes to the stage and plays a class of schoolchildren. The boundaries between the cosmos of the literary text and the lives of the actors are fluid. Questions regarding the teacher-pupil relationship already exist in the source material, and all deal with topics to which the pupils are able to directly match their own experiences. One question is therefore everpresent: What is documentary, what is fiction? How much longer will we be able to question survivors, how much longer will we have the opportunity to hear their stories from their own mouths? Seven contemporary witnesses of the Holocaust appear on stage and explain how they narrowly escaped annihilation. They attest to the countless people killed. In doing so, they do not simply rail against past horrors, but instead take a stand against the continuing threat of the circumstances that once led to Auschwitz. www.jungestheaterbasel.ch, www.theater-basel.ch www.burgtheater.at 4 5 Sunday the 18th of May 2014, 16:00 – 17:30 and Monday the 19th of May 2014, 18:00 – 19:30 Societaetstheater, Eugen-Gutmann-Saal Solo for Lu a performance by Jing Lu and Jana Svobodová Archa Theatre, Prague director: Jana Svobodová The audience joins protagonist Jing Lu on a journey stretching from her childhood in China to her current life in Prague. This intimate tale full of tragedy, hardship and will to succeed is set against both the global questions of today’s world and western society’s ambivalent relationship with China, which ranges from admiration of oriental culture to fear of China’s economic supremacy. Sunday the 18th of May 2014, 18:00 – 19:30 Kleines Haus 3 Ich armer Tor adapted from Goethe’s “Faust” and performed by men going through a mid-life crisis Die Bürgerbühne, Staatsschauspiel Dresden director: Miriam Tscholl With nothing to lose, seven crisis-hardened men from Dresden dare to tackle the foremost work of German theatre. If anyone can understand what Faust went through, it’s them! The preacher fears “the big question”, the museum education officer has a crisis of doubt, the banker is convinced that Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs have a hand in Faust’s wager with the devil. And then there’s Gretchen… www.archatheatre.cz www.staatsschauspiel-dresden.de www.staatsschauspiel-dresden.de/buergerbuehne 6 7 Sunday the 18th of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:30 Kleines Haus 1 Eine (mikro)ökonomische Weltgeschichte, getanzt by Pascal Rambert and Éric Méchoulan Volkstheater, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, director: Pascal Rambert Introduction: 19:00, Kleines Haus 1 The German-Italian philosopher Emmanuel Alloa commentates on scenes from economic history live on stage. The various episodes see four actresses look back on stories from Edward Lloyd’s coffee house (a one-time meeting place for the businesspeople of London), the exchange of gifts in archaic societies and the founder of classical economics, Adam Smith. Thirty residents of Karlsruhe who met regularly at a writing workshop are accompanied by a choir as they dance, show their favourite things and write. Monday the 19th of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:30 Kleines Haus 3 Dschingis Khan a “Völkerschau” by Monster Truck in cooperation with Theater Thikwa The “Monster Truck” performance collective plays with societal attributions, and brings three people with Down’s syndrome – until recently referred to as “mongoloid” – to the stage in the role of genuine Mongolians. Images of exoticism intermingle with common preconceptions of mental handicaps. The project poses questions about the autonomy and authenticity of the mentally handicapped on stage. www.monstertrucker.de www.staatstheater.karlsruhe.de 8 9 Tuesday the 20th of May 2014, 18:00 – 19:45 and Wednesday the 21th of May 2014, 11:00 – 12:45 Kleines Haus 3 Romeo og Julie lever! loosely adapted from William Shakespeare Borgerscenen, Aalborg Teater director: Minna Johannesson Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet only had a week with each other before taking their own lives. What would have happened if they had shared the rest of a long life together? “Romeo and Juliet live!” sees people tell the story of their own experiences with love – from initial infatuation and long-term relationships to deep friendship. Literary fiction and daily reality merge on stage to form a new cosmos. Tuesday the 20th of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:30 Kleines Haus 1 Nichts. Was im Leben wichtig ist by Janne Teller Mannheimer Bürgerbühne Nationaltheater Mannheim director: Kristo Šagor “Nothing means anything, that’s why there’s no point in doing anything.” It is with this statement that Pierre Anthon shocks his fellow pupils and leaves the class. Those left behind embark on a search for evidence to the contrary. Eight youths from the Rhine-Neckar region act and recount a class of schoolchildren’s dramatic struggle of to find the meaning of life. www.nationaltheater-mannheim.de, www.schnawwl.de www.aalborgteater.dk/borgerscenen 10 11 Wednesday the 21th of May 2014, 18:00 – 18:45 and 20:00 – 20:45 Societaetstheater, Eugen-Gutmann-Saal Requiemaszyna performed by a choir of 27 Warsaw citizens libretto based on texts by Wl⁄adysl⁄aw Broniewski Instytut Teatralny im. Zbigniewa Raszewskiego, Warsaw director: Marta Górnicka Marta Górnicka’s choir tells the stories of a human existence defined by societal, economic and religious norms. “Requiemaszyna” sees the ensemble raise its voice on the subject of our market-driven reality, our society trapped between the terror of unemployment and pressure to perform superhuman feats of work. Thursday the 21nd of May 2014, 20:00 Kleines Haus 1 Tod. Sünde. 7 performed by 16 youths from Berlin Young dt, Berlin director: Wojtek Klemm What is the role of arrogance, tight-fistedness or jealousy in a secularized society where the pursuit of gain, self-assertion and consumption are rewarded? “Tod.Sünde.7” asks what part morals and virtues have to play in 2014. Interviews and research-based or self-written texts are used in combination with choreographic “moving images” to present a modern descent into hell. www.instytut-teatralny.pl www.deutschestheater.de www.deutschestheater.de/junges_dt 12 13 Friday the 23rd of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:00 Kleines Haus 3 Dear Moldova, can we kiss just a little bit? A documentary project by Nicoleta Esinencu and Jessica Glause Teatru Spălătorie, Chişinău director: Jessica Glause Saturday the 24th of May 2014, 18:00 – 19:15 and 22:00 – 23:15 Kleines Haus 3 Woe by Edit Kaldor a production with teenagers for adults Stichting Kata / Edit Kaldor, Amsterdam director: Edit Kaldor Six people from Chişinău talk for the first time about their own sexual orientation or that of their nearest and dearest. Interviews are used to throw light on what it means to be openly “gay” in Moldova. Humiliation and contempt at the hands of friends and family members, bullying and even loss of employment – all of this is part of the daily reality of people whose sexual orientation is enough to make them a minority in the former Soviet republic. Three teenagers guide the audience through memories of their own youth, gradually replacing conventional images of childhood with images of neglect and maltreatment. The youths lead us through subjective experiences, fantasies and dreams which intermingle with scientific descriptions of the mental and physical processes which occur during abuse. How close is it possible to get to the experience of a fellow human being? www.spalatorie.md www.editkaldor.com 14 15 Werkschau Dresden Die Bürgerbühne (Staatsschauspiel Dresden) will be staging three productions from its repertoire during the Bürgerbühnenfestival Saturday the 24th of May 2014 20:00 – around 23:00 Kleines Haus 1 Moeders a production featuring ten mothers from Rotterdam Ro Theater Rotterdam director: Alize Zandwijk “Moeders” is a production featuring ten mothers from Rotterdam, each of whom has a different ethnic background. Led by director Alize Zandwijk, the women present intimate monologues dealing with their personal and equally universal experiences of motherhood – at the same time as cooking for the audience. By the time the performance has finished the food is ready and everyone can tuck in. www.rotheater.nl 16 Saturday the 17th of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:45, Kleines Haus 3 Meine Akte und ich a research piece on the subject of the East German Ministry of State Security in Dresden Director: Clemens Bechtel “Meine Akte und ich” brings nine citizens of Dresden with experience of the files kept by the East German Ministry of State Security to the stage. Wednesday the 21st of May 2014, 19:30 – 21:15, Schauspielhaus 100 Prozent Dresden a statistical chain reaction by Rimini Protokoll Director: Rimini Protokoll Dresden in numbers, numbers from the citizens of Dresden. Months of research led to the selection of 100 Dresden residents according to statistical criteria, each of them representing around 5,300 of the city’s residents. The resultant ensemble plays our city, sings as a choir that has never rehearsed and forms an impossible entity that continually morphs into new groups, into fleeting portraits of affiliation and polarity: a sea of voices as a geometric body on 100 square metres of stage. Thursday the 22nd of May 2014, 20:00 – 21:45, Kleines Haus 3 Weiße Flecken a play about dementia for citizens, choir and an actor by Tobias Rausch Directors: Tobias Rausch and Matthias Reichwald “Weiße Flecken” measures the spheres of impact which extend out from the illness of dementia, be they from the patient to their nearest and dearest, nursing staff, medical specialists and administrators or to society and the political world. 17 Accompanying events Saturday the 17th of May 2014 23:00, Kleines Haus Allstar Refjúdží Band Concert and party Free entry Sunday the 18th of May 2014 11:00, Kleines Haus Mitte Dramaturgical strategies for professional theatrical productions with non-professional actors Podium discussion Free entry Sunday the 18th of May 2014 14:00, Kleines Haus Mitte Die Bürgerbühne Das Dresdner Modell (“Die Bürgerbühne, the Dresden Model”, eds.
