Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra!
WELCOME BY THE PATRON
As we celebrate our 17th Season, the MPO
continues to enrich the cultural landscape of
Kuala Lumpur, and to build on its reputation as
an outstanding and a leading orchestra in Asia.
True to its objective, MPO continues to share
the joy of music with people from all walks of
life and diverse interests, and showcases what
Malaysia has to offer in terms of world-class
orchestral music.
I am indeed excited to note that in this new
Season, there will be ‘treats galore’… the
opening season Gala featuring performances
with two stars of New York’s Metropolitan
Opera (soprano Deborah Voigt and conductor
Fabio Luisi), a two-week “Carmen Festival” to
commemorate the 140th Anniversary of the
premier of Bizet’s Carmen, the exceptional
music of Final Fantasy, musical soundtracks of
Casablanca and Home Alone, and many more!
I am extremely glad that Malaysian child
prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, will perform

I am also happy that much is being done in terms
of grooming our young musicians, through the
Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
Lastly, I wish to thank PETRONAS and all our
loyal benefactors, for standing behind the MPO
to ensure that our music plays on!
I bid you all a warm welcome to yet another
inspiring Season with the MPO. As the new
Chairman of the MPO, I am indeed thrilled to be
part of the music-making scene in the city and
for Malaysia!
I am pleased to announce the appointment
of Maestro Fabio Mechetti as MPO Principal
Conductor. Please join me in welcoming him to
the MPO! Mr. Mechetti brings with him a wealth
of experience and artistic excellence, and I
have no doubt that he will lead the MPO on an
exciting artistic journey.
The 2014/15 Season promises to be an allencompassing myriad of musical experiences;
with performances ranging from operas,
concertos and symphonies, to ballet, choral
works, movie music and even Malaysian popular
and traditional music, the Season ensures that
we will cater to the varied musical appetites of
our Malaysian and foreign audiences.

As with each new Season, we are excited to
feature the MPO with many celebrated and
distinguished guest artists and conductors from
all corners of the world - Fabio Luisi, Edo de
Waart, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Deborah Voigt,
Susan Graham, Sumi Jo, Janine Jensen, Sarah
Chang, and our own Tengku Ahmad Irfan, to
name a few.
Beginning this Season, new efforts to stepchange the development of our MPYO musicians
will be introduced, to take their artistic standards
to the next level. A new training programme will
be put in place, and a Resident Conductor will be
engaged to steer their development; these will be
announced in due course.
I would like to thank our beloved Patron YABhg
Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali for her
continuous dedication and support, and of course
our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, loyal
subscribers, partners, and our ardent fans and
audiences, who have all come together to make it

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes
Fabio Mechetti as its Principal Conductor. Born in
Brazil, Maestro Mechetti garners consistent praise
from critics and colleagues for his artistry and
knowledge of the symphonic repertoire.
He has held the post of Music Director of the
Syracuse, Spokane and Jacksonville Symphonies
in the United States, remaining as Conductor
Emeritus of the latter two. In 2008, Mechetti was
appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor
of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Belo
Horizonte, with the task of creating a brand new
professional orchestra in Brazil’s third largest city.
In addition to his Carnegie Hall début with the New
Jersey Symphony, Mechetti has appeared as guest
conductor in the US with orchestras including
the Seattle, San Diego and Utah Symphonies,
Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonics, as well as
in Festivals such as Chautauqua in New York and
Grant Park in Chicago. In Japan he has conducted
the Tokyo, Sapporo and Hiroshima Symphonies.
He has also conducted orchestras in Venezuela,
Peru, Spain and New Zealand.
In Europe he has led the BBC Scottish Symphony,
the Sinfonica di Roma, Danish Radio and
Helsinborg Symphonies, and will make his début
with the Spanish Radio and TV Orchestra in
Madrid. A highly acclaimed opera conductor, he
made his American début with the Washington
Opera and has served as Music Director of the
Rio de Janeiro Opera House.
Winner of the 1989 Malko International
Conducting Competition in Denmark and holding
Master’s degrees in conducting and composition
from the Juilliard School of Music, Mechetti has
recorded with the Minas Gerais Philharmonic for
Naxos and the São Paulo Symphony for Biscoito
Fino. He has worked with some of the world’s
greatest artists, including Mstislav Rostropovich,
Itzhak Perlman, Alicia de Larrocha, Frederica von
Stade, Thomas Hampson, Gil Shaham, and Hilary
Hahn, among others.

From Romania comes the National Radio Orchestra with
an eclectic programme of six works by composers from five
countries: Malaysia, Spain, Germany, Russia, and of course
Romania. Also from Romania come two soloists, violinist
Gabriel Croitoru and pianist Horia Mihail. This concert is
a collaboration between Radio Televisyen Malaysia and
DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS in conjuction with the
‘World Summit on Media for Children 2014’.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Symphony No.1
Featuring works by Richard Wagner, Robert
Schumann, and Felix Mendelssohn, who all
were fascinated with literature, and who all were
conductors. Wagner composed Siegfried Idyll as a
birthday present to his wife after the birth of their son
Siegfried. At separate times in his life Mendelssohn
composed music for Shakespeare's play, A
Midsummer Night's Dream, including the worldfamous Wedding March.

This programme features the amazing young Japanese
pianist Yu Kosuge in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a
Theme of Paganini, after which we hear Shostakovich’s
best-known symphony, the Fifth, a powerful work that
has been one of the foundation stones of the orchestral
repertoire ever since its premiere in 1937. The concert
opens with a suite drawn from Bernstein’s snazzy score
for his Broadway show Candide.

The sheer scope, enormity, and vastness of Mahler’s Third
Symphony places it in a class by itself. Lasting about 100
minutes, one might call it a “Symphony of Superlatives,”
for it attempts to portray in sound, a chorus, vocalist, and
gigantic orchestra, nothing less than the whole of human
experience and a philosophy of life. The amazing mezzosoprano Susan Graham adds her heavenly voice to the
experience.

As Spyro Gyra contemplates upcoming milestones
to its storied career, it is tempting to fall back on
the Grateful Dead lyric, “What a long strange trip
it’s been.” How many bands in instrumental jazz
or any music, for that matter, can boast a 40-year
career, gaining and keeping fans over almost four
decades? When Spyro Gyra was formed in 1974
in Buffalo, New York, the pop charts included
names like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grand Funk Railroad,
the Carpenters, Bob Marley & The Wailers and
Pink Floyd. Very few groups can claim this kind of

2014 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard
Strauss, one of the most sensational composers who ever
lived. This programme presents four very different works
from his incredible repertoire, beginning with a splendid
brass fanfare, moving on to a woodwind serenade, then
Salomé’s riverting Dance of the Seven Veils, and finally
the colossal Alpine Symphony, one of the most remarkable
works ever created to depict nature in sound.

This bewitching concert features a little girl who loves to
sing, in the town of Hamelin where music is forbidden, 30
years after the infamous Pied Piper has led all of Hamelin’s
children away. Hannah breaks this musical silence with
the help of a talkative rat and her passion for grand music.
Fuelled by selections from Verdi, Mendelssohn, Liszt and
Villa-Lobos, three performers take the audience through
dark nights and hidden caverns, exploring musical
perfection and obsession.

Piano Concerto to be selected by the HKIPC winner
DVOŘÁK
Symphony No. 8
Legendary pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy takes the podium
to conduct the first prize winner of the 4th Hong Kong
International Piano Competition (Oct 2014) in a concerto of
the soloist’s choice. To open the programme we hear a stirring
Beethoven overture, and following intermission Dvořák’s
genial Eighth Symphony, a work whose prevailing happy spirit,
idyllic moods and evocations of nature and simple rustic life
have endeared it to generations of concert-goers.

Michael Francis conducts an entire programme of music
by Rachmaninoff - one of the world’s favourite composers,

Kirill Karabits brings us the most unusual programme.
Everyone loves Tchaikovsky, but how many know his Third
Symphony? It’s the least-known of this Russian master’s
works in the genre, but well worth getting to know. There’s
also music by Bach, but not Johann Sebastian. It’s by
Carl Philipp Emanuel, the fifth child of J.S. Bach and who,
during his lifetime (1714-1788), enjoyed greater fame
than any other Bach, including his father. MPO’s principal
oboist, Simon Emes, is the featured soloist.

Fabian Russell conducts a programme of “carnival”
music. Dvořák’s exuberant overture perfectly depicts
the whirl and frenetic bustle of Carnival season in
the late winter of the southern hemisphere. SaintSaëns’ Carnival of the Animals represents another
kind of carnival, a collection of musical portraits of
creatures made of feathers, furs and fins. Stravinsky’s
ballet score Petrushka, which, in its outer tableaux,
presents a riot of sound and colour as experienced in
a town fair in Old Russia.

Fabio Mechetti’s programme. Johann Strauss means waltz, and that’s what
you’ll hear mixed in among the wonderful tunes that make up the overture

opera by another Strauss (Richard, no relation to Johann). In between these
opening and closing numbers we hear more dance-inspired music, and in the
centre of the programme is a fiendishly difficult work with solo piano.

The Planets by English composer Gustav Holst is a
depiction in music of the planets in our solar system,
from the serene beauty of Venus to the relentless military
onslaught of Mars to the icy realms of Neptune. It all makes
for a fascinating musical experience, preceded by another
mind-blowing orchestral spectacular, Strauss’s Also sprach
Zarathustra, made famous in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A
Space Odyssey.
Three meddlesome spirits - Music, Noise and Silence - invade
the concert hall. The concert seems doomed as Silence and
Noise attempt to seize control of the orchestra. Only with the
help of the audience and Music will the conductor be able to
break the fierce grip of Noise and bring harmony back to the
orchestra. Another wonderful production from the innovative,
imaginative Magic Circle Mime Company, one of today’s most

Two big works from the late romantic period make up this
programme. Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts the great Fifth
Symphony by his Finnish countryman Sibelius. Dark, somber
colours predominate, as is this composer’s tendency, lending
an air of passionate urgency to the music. Love, grief, crisis
and destiny were favourite themes of the nineteenth-century
Romantic composers, and nowhere in Tchaikovsky’s life do
they occur more dramatically than in 1877, the year he wrote
his Fourth Symphony.
Fabio Mechetti conducts his favourite Mahler symphony,
the Sixth, sometimes referred to as the “Tragic”.
Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen, whose playing The
New York Times hails as “technically flawless”, reunites
with the MPO for a virtuosic performance of Liszt’s
Second Piano Concerto.

Dream music inspired by Shakespeare; and Beethoven’s
thrilling Choral Fantasy, featuring Malaysia’s sixteen year-old
Wunderkind pianist Tengku Ahmad Irfan and the Transylvania
State Philharmonic Choir from Romania.

composers, two German and two French, all original and
influential figures. From each composer we hear one of his
most famous and most important works, providing listeners
with a musical feast indeed, from Weber’s stirring overture
to the opera Der Freischütz to Hindemith’s Symphonic
Metamorphoses (derived from themes by Weber) to
Messiaen’s inspired Offrandes oubliées (Forgotten
Offerings) to one of the most thrilling seascapes in all
music, Debussy’s La Mer.

DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS (DFP) is
home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
(MPO) and is Malaysia’s concert hall devoted
specifically to classical music. Located in
the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially
opened on 17 August 1998 by the patron of
the MPO, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali
and former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir
Mohamad.
Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its
inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape
of the great 19th century European concert halls
with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing
a spectacular backdrop to the hall’s stage.

The hall seats 920, which includes box seats,
corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics
experts Kirkegaard and Associates have
incorporated unique acoustical devices into the
design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities.
Celebrating its 16th anniversary on 17 August
2014, DFP plays an integral part in the music
and cultural landscape of Malaysia and the
city of Kuala Lumpur. It attracts audiences and
continues to enthrall listeners as it has done
since the day it first opened its doors. In addition
to stimulating and enriching concerts by the
MPO, world renowned orchestras including the
New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra,
BBC Symphony and Vienna Symphony have
performed in this beautiful hall.
Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted such
prominent artists as Harry Connick Jr, the Count
Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo, Mezzoforte, Pink Martini, Gotan
Project and sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar. In
addition, Malaysian artists including Tan Sri SM
Salim, Dato’ Sheila Majid, Dato’ M. Nasir and
Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza have mesmerised audiences
at DFP.
Always innovative in its programming, DFP’s
crowd pleasing Showcase, Seni Fest and
Spotlight series have featured international stars
such as Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain and Larry
Carlton in addition to local talents like Noryn
Aziz, Rachel Guerzo, Yuna, Aizat, Najwa, Hafiz
and many others.
Concerts by talented young Malaysians
who form the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth
Orchestra (MPYO) continue to be hosted at
this venue.
DFP’s success is also attributed to its
exceptional architectural design, superior
acoustics and recording studio modelled after
the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Orchestra
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)
gave its inaugural performance at DEWAN
FILHARMONIK PETRONAS (DFP), Kuala
Lumpur, on 17 August 1998. The initial search
for outstanding musicians involved a worldwide
audition tour. The result was a symphony orchestra
made up of musicians from 25 nations – a
remarkable example of harmony among different
cultures and nationalities.
A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has
worked with the MPO, including Lorin Maazel, Sir
Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell,
Harry Connick Jr and Andrea Bocelli, many of

whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical
qualities and vitality.
With each new season, the MPO continues to
present a varied programme of orchestral music
drawn from over three centuries, as well as the
crowd-pleasing Specials, Pops, Family Fun Day,
Chamber and Happy Hour series. It regularly
presents specially commissioned new music
and successfully collaborates with local and
international artists.
Japan and Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China
(2006), Taiwan (2007), Japan (2009) and Vietnam
(2013). The MPO’s Education and Outreach
Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the
concert platform to develop musical awareness,
appreciation and skills through dedicated activities
that include instrumental lessons, workshops and
school concerts. ENCOUNTER also arranges
memorable events in such diverse venues as
orphanages, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and
community centres.
The MPO regularly visits the major cities of
Malaysia. Internationally, it has been to Singapore,
MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in
the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).The MPYO
gave its inaugural concert at DFP on 25 August
2007 and followed this with a highly-successful
tour of several cities in Peninsular Malaysia. In
December 2008, the MPYO toured Sabah and
Sarawak, and visited Singapore in 2009, and
Brisbane, Australia in December 2012.
As it celebrates its 16th Anniversary this 17
August 2014, the Orchestra remains steadfast in
its mission to share the depth, power and beauty
of great music. The MPO’s main benefactor is
PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah
Haji Mohd Ali.

CONDITIONS OF SALE
• Valid tickets are required for admittance into the concert hall.
• No refunds. All sales are final.
• Discounts and concessions cannot be combined.
• Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS reserves the right to introduce
discounts and other price changes, and vary seating arrangement
without notice.
• Out of consideration for both audience and artists, children under the age of 8 are not allowed in the concert hall unless otherwise
indicated. For Family Fun Day concerts, children aged 4 and
above will be admitted with paid admission.
• The artistic programme (including all artists and repertoire) is
subject to change without notice.
EXCHANGES
• Tickets may be exchanged up to 72 hours prior to the original
performance for another performance in this Season. Exchanges
are done on a ticket for ticket basis and any difference in price will
either be charged or forfeited.
• All exchanges must be done in person at the Box Office and the
original tickets must be returned.
• Lost/reprinted tickets cannot be exchanged.
• All exchanges carry a non-refundable fee of RM5 per ticket.

PREPAID PARKING tickets are available for purchase from the
merchandise counters. It is valid only on the day of purchase and

FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED Facilities for wheelchair users
include a ramp to the foyer, a lift with low-level buttons, levelled floor
and a designated wheelchair position in the stalls. A unisex toilet
for customers with disabilities is available at the Stalls, Circle and
Upper Circle levels. An induction loop is available in the Stalls and
relays the performance to those using hearing aids with a T-setting.
Please advise our Box Office staff at the time you book your tickets
if you require the above services.
LATECOMERS Concerts at DFP begin promptly at the advertised
starting time. No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a
suitable break in the programme. Members of the audience who
leave the hall before or during the performance will not be readmitted until the next suitable break.
Latecomers to Chamber/Happy Hour/Family Fun Day/DFP Presents
concerts will not be admitted as these concerts are only one hour
long with no suitable breaks. As a courtesy to the performers and
other audience members, please remain in your seat until the
concert has concluded.
