Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS featuring the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra 2013|14 season concert calendar Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS Concerts from the energetic Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) and the annual Seni Festival featuring local music and traditional performing art forms continue to be hosted at this venue. Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and is Malaysia’s concert hall devoted specifically to classical music. Located in the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on 17th August 1998 by the patron of the MPO, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Always innovative in its programming, DFP has introduced many new ideas including the first ever Artists-in-Residence (the Borodin Quartet), the crowd pleasing DFP Showcase and DFP Spotlight series which have featured international stars such as Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain and Larry Carlton in addition to local talents like Noryn Aziz, Rachel Guerzo, Yuna, Aizat, Najwa, Hafiz and many others. Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a spectacular backdrop to the hall’s stage and platform. The hall seats 920, which includes box seats, 20 luxurious corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard and Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into the design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities, leading Yuri Temirkanov, Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, to remark that “…it’s beautiful, the sound is warm, woody and kind… it’s one of the best halls I’ve played in.” DFP’s success is also attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after that at Abbey Road. Bryn Terfel, the Welsh bass-baritone star said of it: “DFP excels in its wonderful acoustics and good lighting that creates a very intimate setting. I only wish I could put the hall in my pocket and take it with me everywhere I perform. It is truly a pearl in the Malaysian musical heritage”. Celebrating its 15th Anniversary this 17th August 2013, DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of Malaysia and the city of Kuala Lumpur. It attracts audiences and continues to enthrall listeners as it has done since the day it first opened its doors. In addition to stimulating and enriching concerts by the MPO, DFP has hosted some of the world’s leading artists and orchestras. These include the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, conductors Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Andrew Davis and Yehudi Menuhin. World renowned orchestras that have performed in this beautiful hall include the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, BBC Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Sydney Symphony and NHK Symphony. As a chamber music venue, DFP has also attracted such eminent ensembles as the Belcea Quartet and Shanghai Quartet. Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted such prominent artists as Harry Connick Jr, the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Pink Martini, Gotan Project and sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar. In addition, Malaysian artists including Tan Sri S M Salim, Dato’ Sheila Majid, Dato’ M. Nasir and Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza have mesmerised audiences at DFP. 2 TICKET ON-SALE DATES PACKAGES – MPO FIXED PACKAGES, MPO SPECIALS, DFP SHOWCASE, DFP SENI FEST Su bscribers 29 June 2013, Saturday G eneral P u blic 30 June 2013, Sunday SINGLE TICKETS Contents Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS 2 Message from the Patron 4 Message from the Chairman 5 Board Members6 Message from the Music Director 7 Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra 8-9 Subscriber Privileges10 The Concert Series: A Guide 11 Legacy12 Age Of Elegance13 Discovery14 Family Fun Day15 Pops16 Great Violin Concertos17 The World of Gustav Mahler 18 MPO Specials20 DFP Showcase21 DFP Seni Fest & DFP Spotlight 22 Artist Biographies 26 & 31 Su bscribers 3 July 2013, Wednesday G eneral P u blic 6 July 2013, Saturday PU LL- OU T SE CTION Season at a Glance 27-30 2013/14 Season Calendar32-45 Concessions46 Seating Plan49 Booking & General Information 51 Concert Dress Code52 Corporate Hospitality & Sponsorship 54 Acknowledgement55 All details are correct at time of printing. It was on 17 August 1998 that MPO gave its maiden performance in the beautiful DFP. Over the years we have seen a steadily growing audience amongst the young and old, a testimony of the quality and variety of MPO’s mesmerising music. I am indeed delighted and proud to learn that this new season’s opening Gala concert will feature the world premier of a new composition by our child prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, who will also perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most technically-difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. As a walk down memory lane, the MPO will perform Strauss’ Don Juan, which was played 15 years ago at DFP’s inaugural concert. Together with the “Great Violin Concertos” series, featuring leading violinists and works of Shostakovich, Mozart and Brahms, to name a few, and the continuing popularity of POPs/ Special concerts, the MPO promises to deliver yet another exciting and not-to-be missed season. 4 I believe the MPO has done well in promoting and developing our talented Malaysian youths. Through the MPYO, more new musical talents have been ‘unearthed’ and the platform provided for their artistic nurturing and enhancements. Although the rigours of training are there, I believe that the experiences are rewarding. With the continuing gracious support of MPO’s main donor PETRONAS, and our loyal sponsors, supporters and friends, I am sure that we will be able to sustain and share the wonders and joys of MPO’s music to the community at large, not forgetting those for whom such simple joys of music are not easily accessible nor savoured. Please join me in welcoming the 2013/14 Season of the MPO and let us all indulge in the new Season’s offerings! M E S S AG E F R OM T H E C HA I R M A N Dato Mohd Medan Abdullah Welcome to a magnificent and harmonious new season with our very own Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)! popular symphonies. After serving 6 years as Music Director, Maestro Flour will leave an indelible stamp on the MPO. As the MPO celebrates its 15th “birthday”, I am delighted that we have stayed true throughout the years in our purpose to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. The positive energy of music fills Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS as we continue to showcase a splendid repertoire of international conductors, soloists and musicians with Stéphane Denève, Steven Osborne and Carl Davis returning to play in this beautiful hall. This new 2013/14 Season allows us to once again “reimagine” the tremendous energy and power of music. Always innovative and looking to broaden our artistic horizon, the MPO has commissioned a new work by a young Malaysian prodigy who will also play one of the most difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. The annual DFP Seni Festival will once again see the MPO collaborating with local artists and crossing musical boundaries by giving traditional performing arts groups the opportunity to play together with the orchestra, thereby realising Malaysian content aspirations. This season will also be Music Director Claus Peter Flor’s farewell season and we will see him conducting three of Mahler’s most 5 This celebration of music would not be possible without the unwavering support and commitment of our beloved Patron YABhg Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali, our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, partners, loyal subscribers and all our wonderful audiences. Thank you so much for your support in this journey of appreciating the beauty and energy of music. The orchestra has played many impressive concerts throughout the past 15 seasons, and we have been fortunate to have the support of a dedicated audience. I know that many of you have been with us from the beginning, and we thank you for your continued attendance. The MPO has commissioned a new work from Malaysian prodigy Tengku Ahmad Irfan to be premiered at the season opening concerts. Irfan, who also recently had one of his pieces performed by the New York Philharmonic, is one of the youngest composer in the world to have works commissioned and performed by major orchestras, and we are extremely proud of him. Last season we brought to you great performances of the complete Beethoven symphonies. This next season we will highlight works of Mahler. In the “World of Gustav Mahler” series, I will conduct his first, fourth, and fifth symphonies; conductor Hubert Soudant and contralto Sara Mingardo will join together for Mahler’s haunting song cycle, Kindertotenlieder. Another highlight of the upcoming season is our “Great Violin Concertos” series featuring virtuosic violin soloists James Ehnes (Shostakovich Concerto No. 1), Tianwa Yang (Lalo 7 Symphonie espagnole), Vilde Frang (Korngold Concerto), Tibor Kovác (Bartók Concerto No. 2), Josef Špacek (Mendelssohn Concerto) and Liza Ferschtman (Brahms Concerto). We are excited to announce the return of many of your favourite conductors and soloists, including Stéphane Denève, Olari Elts, Martin Sieghart, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Robert Levin & Ya-Fei Chuang, Benedetto Lupo, and many more. Performing with the MPO for the first time, we welcome conductors Alondra de la Parra & Kazuki Yamada; pianists Till Fellner & Javier Perianes; and sopranos Karina Gauvin & Kimy McLaren – to name just a few. I am also particularly looking forward to performing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Trio Wanderer. Please take the time to browse through our entire new season. I am confident everyone will find a concert to their liking. The MPO cordially welcomes you to its season 2013/14. Sincerely yours, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), Kuala Lumpur, on 17th August 1998. Over the past 15 seasons it has consistently impressed and inspired audience of all ages. The MPO’s mission is to nurture an interest in classical music in Malaysia, a key component of this being the encouragement of home-grown talents. The MPO’s Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness, appreciation and skills through dedicated activities that include instrumental lessons, workshops and school concerts. ENCOUNTER has also arranged memorable events in such diverse venues as orphanages, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and community centres, thereby enriching the lives of those less fortunate members of Malaysian society. The initial search in 1997 for outstanding musicians involved a worldwide audition tour. The result was a 105-member symphony orchestra made up of musicians from 25 nations – a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities. A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has worked with the MPO, including Lorin Maazel, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jiři Bélohlávek, Sir Neville Marriner, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Yehudi Menuhin, Vadim Repin, Joshua Bell, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Truls Mork and Simon Preston, many of whom have praised the MPO for its musical qualities and vitality. Conductor Lorin Maazel called it “a remarkable and amazing orchestra”, and Gramophone critic Andrew Achenbach praised the Orchestra for its “immaculate finish and engaging spirit”. MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), coached by the MPO players and directed by MPYO’s Principal Conductor Kevin Field. The MPYO gave its inaugural concert at DFP on 25th August 2007 and followed this with a highly-successful tour of several cities in Peninsular Malaysia. In December 2008, the MPYO undertook a highly-successful tour of Sabah and Sarawak, and visited Singapore in 2009, and Brisbane, Australia in December 2012. The 2013/14 Season will be Music Director Claus Peter Flor’s farewell season; his tenure ends following 6 seasons of over 100 concerts. Following the pioneering work of his illustrious predecessors, Maestro Flor continued to build on the MPO’s enviable reputation for musical excellence by presenting the very best in orchestral music to Malaysian audiences. With each new season, the MPO presents a varied programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries as well as chamber, contemporary and specially commissioned new music. It also continues to collaborate with local talents including Tengku Ahmad Irfan, Bobby Chen and Foo Mei Yi, to name a few. In its relatively brief existence, the MPO has already established itself as a recognized recording orchestra. Seventeen CDs have so far been released internationally for the Vox, BIS and Naxos labels. In 2009/10 Season, the MPO collaborated with a local film studio to produce the soundtrack for the movie ‘Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa’. In 2013, the MPO will release, in conjunction with DFP’s 15th Anniversary celebrations, a new album consisting of specially arranged Malaysian patriotic and local folk songs. As it celebrates its 15th Anniversary this 17th August 2013, the Orchestra remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. The MPO’s main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali. Touring has become an important element in raising the MPO’s international profile. The Orchestra regularly visits the major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has been to Singapore, Japan and Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007), Japan (2009) and will tour Vietnam in 2013. 8 Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra MUSIC DIRECTOR Claus Peter Flor ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR Kevin Field FIRST VIOLIN Concertmaster Anna Reszniak Co-Concertmaster Peter Daniš Principal Ming Goh Co-Principal Zhenzhen Liang Sub-Principal Vira Nyezhentseva Runa Baagöe Maho Daniš Miroslav Daniš Evgeny Kaplan Ergys Koni Martijn Noomen Sherwin Thia SECOND VIOLIN Section Principal Daniela Rodnite Co-Principal Timothy Peters Assistant Principal Luisa Hyams Chia-Nan Hung Anastasia Kiseleva Stefan Kocsis Ling Yunzhi Ionut Mazareanu Tan Poh Kim Yanbo Zhao VIOLA Section Principal Jin Zhenhong Co-Principal Gábor Mokány Fumiko Dobrinov Linda Garrett Ong Lin Kern Carol Pendlebury Sun Yuan Fan Ran CELLO Co-Principal Csaba Kőrös Assistant Principal Steven Retallick Gerald Davis Julie Dessureault Laurentiu Gherman Tan Poh Joo Elizabeth Tan Suyin Sejla Simon DOUBLE BASS Section Principal Wolfgang Steike Co-Principal Christopher Brandt Assistant Principal COR ANGLAIS TRUMPET Principal Co-Principal Denis Simonnet CLARINET BASS CLARINET TROMBONE Principal Co-Principal BASSOON Sub-Principal FLUTE Section Principal Co-Principal Yukako Yamamoto Sub-Principal Rachel Jenkyns PICCOLO William Day Assistant Principal Matthew Larsen Hristo Dobrinov Sub-Principal Sub-Principal Joseph Pruessner Raffael Bietenhader Jun-Hee Chae Naohisa Furusawa John Kennedy Foo Yin Hong Section Principal William Theis Chris Bosco John Bourque Marques Young Anthony Wise Alexandar Lenkov Bass Trombone Co-Principal Principal Jasen Atanasov Sub-Principal Vladimir Stoyanov HORN Section Principal Zachary Bond TUBA Section Principal Brett Stemple Zora Slokar PERCUSSION Sonia Croucher Co-Principal Section Principal OBOE Sub-Principal Principal Section Principal Simon Emes James Schumacher Laurence Davies Assistant Principal Sim Chee Ghee Co-Principal Joost Flach Sub-Principal Niels Dittmann Sub-Principal Graeme Norris Catalina Alvarez 9 Matthew Prendergast HARP Principal Tan Keng Hong Subscriber P rivileg E s Enjoy privileges and discounts! Mozart’s concerto is probably the best-known example of this type, followed by one written by Poulenc nearly two centuries later and inspired by both gamelan music and Mozart. Framing the concertos, we hear two of Richard Strauss’s most popular tone poems, one depicting a legendary lover, the other a rambunctious rascal. 6 Oct ‘13 Sun 3.00pm Lisztomania 546 RM A P Premium 450 RM B A Reserve 336 RM B Reserve C 255 RM C Reserve See seating plan on page 49 3 May ‘14 Sat 8.30pm 4 May ‘14 Sun 3.00pm The Spirit of the Dance Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Kazuki Yamada conductor Benedetto Lupo piano The spirit of the dance infuses two of the three works on this program. Datuk Ramli’s choreography, inspired by Asian dance vocabularies will take the audience on a quintessence journey where the colours and movement of Asian modern dance are infused with exalted sounds of these great composers. MEZZOFORTE is considered one of Europe’s most important fusion bands. From Iceland, the band’s origin helps you understand its special, immediately recognizable sound. Somewhat separated from the world, artists in Iceland revolve much more around themselves, often developing a more characteristic and emotional style than artists caught up in the hectic rush on the continent. In MEZZOFORTE’s case, this splendid Icelandic isolation prompted them to develop unbelievably melodious themes. 21 Entire generations of musicians grew up with the music of MEZZOFORTE and countless radio and TV programmes used their themes - from the BBC to the weather forecast of the Russian Pacific Fleet. Datuk Ramli’s choreography, inspired by Asian dance vocabularies will take the audience on a quintessence journey where the colours and movement of Asian modern dance are infused with exalted sounds of these great composers. 250 RM | 180 RM 130 | RM | 60 RM Datuk Ramli Ibrahim 45 C oncessions 2013/14 SEASON SUBSCRIBERS & SENIOR CITIZENS (55+ years) 15 % OFF ALL TICKET PRICES GROUP BOOKINGS 10 % OFF TICKET PRICES FOR GROUPS OF 10-24 15 20 % OFF TICKET PRICES FOR GROUPS OF 25-49 % OFF TICKET PRICES FOR GROUPS OF 50 OR MORE 2 FREE TICKETS STUDENTS MPO, MPYO, CHAMBER & HAPPY HOUR Concerts MPO SPECIALS, DFP SHOWCASE & DFP SPOTLIGHT Excluding Family Fun Day 15 30 RM RM PER STUDENT PER STUDENT Note: • Discounts cannot be combined. • No concessions, group booking discounts and student price for Toyota Classics 2013. • Tickets for Toyota Classics 2013 concert will be on sale at a later date. • Valid ID required for Senior Citizens and Students. 46 4 FREE TICKETS Mahler’s Fifth Mahler’s Songs Mahler’s First Mahler’s Fourth Sat 15 Feb ‘14, 8.30pm Sun 16 Feb ‘14, 3.00pm Sat 19 Apr ‘14, 8.30pm Sun 20 Apr ‘14, 3.00pm Sat 26 Oct ‘13, 8.30pm Sun 27 Oct ‘13, 3.00pm Sat 14 Dec ‘13, 8.30pm Sun 15 Dec ‘13, 3.00pm The World of GUSTAV MAHLER SEE THE COMPLETE WORLD OF GUSTAV MAHLER PACKAGE ON PAGE 18 47 48 S eating P lan SAPEH 4 6 1 12 11 10 9 9 10 11 12 13 14 8 7 14 13 12 11 10 9 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 STAGE KUDA KEPANG 5 8 9 10 11 12 8 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 REBAB 3 7 ULIK MAYANG 1 2 This standard seating plan is subject to change depending on the concert. 5 6 6 7 8 2 2 3 4 5 5 6 6 7 4 5 6 8 3 5 5 6 6 7 3 5 8 4 2 D 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 D 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 E 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 E 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 F 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 F 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 G 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 G 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 5 6 4 3 5 4 6 5 7 6 8 1 7 8 5 4 3 2 8 1 3 7 6 2 9 J 26 25 24 23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 1 K 9 2 K 3 2 5 26 25 24 23 22 L 8 10 3 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 4 L 7 6 5 4 3 5 6 26 25 24 23 22 M M 7 6 5 4 3 6 26 25 24 23 22 N 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 N 7 6 5 4 3 27 26 25 24 23 22 P 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 P 7 6 5 4 3 26 25 24 23 22 Q 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 Q 7 6 5 4 3 25 24 23 22 R 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 R 7 6 5 4 25 24 23 22 S 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 S 7 6 5 4 25 24 23 22 T 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 T 7 6 5 4 26 25 24 23 22 V 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 V 7 6 5 4 3 7 11 8 22 9 33 1 2 26 25 24 23 22 8 W 7 6 5 4 3 X 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 X 7 6 5 4 3 2 27 26 25 24 23 22 Y 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 Y 7 6 5 4 3 2 27 26 25 24 23 22 Z 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 Z 7 6 5 4 3 2 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 A 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 5 4 3 2 1 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 B B 7 6 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 C C 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 D D 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 C C 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 D D 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 B 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 P Premium A UPPER CIRCLE B A A Reserve B B Reserve 49 6 5 7 6 8 1 2 3 4 1 5 2 6 3 3 7 4 4 8 2 5 6 5 6 1 2 1 5 2 6 3 3 7 4 4 8 5 6 A 8 9 10 1 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 14 13 12 11 10 9 3 4 4 5 W CIRCLE 7 8 3 5 6 27 26 25 24 23 22 A 1 2 4 C C Reserve S Suite RIGHT UPPER CIRCLE LEFT 2 CIRCLE CIRCLE 4 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 6 UPPER CIRCLE 1 J ASYIK GAMBUS 2 7 4 3 GENDANG 6 5 SUMAZAU 3 7 6 27 26 25 24 23 22 1 4 C 2 5 1 8 4 3 6 5 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 2 5 4 2 C 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 3 7 6 3 6 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 1 3 H BOX J INANG NAFIRI 4 2 REBANA 8 4 3 CINTA SAYANG 5 5 BOX D 3 7 6 BOX C 2 7 B 8 1 6 8 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 55 3 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 H 66 4 B 1 2 27 26 25 24 23 22 1 5 27 26 25 24 23 22 1 2 1 10 44 2 5 2 10 4 8 7 6 ANGKLUNG 4 A WAU BULAN 3 4 8 7 BOX G 2 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 BOX H 2 ZAPIN 1 A BOX B SERUNAI 1 24 23 22 CANANG 3 4 3 BOX F 2 BANGSAWAN 1 MENORA 1 BOX A SERULING STALLS 1 50 G E N E R A L I nformation B ooking I nformation BOOKINGS may be made • At the Box Office • Online: mpo.com.my and dfp.com.my • Phone: +603-2051 7007 • Fax: +603-2051 7077 • E-mail: [email protected] • Post: The Box Office, Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, Level 2, Tower 2, PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088 Kuala Lumpur DRESS CODE Gala Concert: Long-sleeved batik or lounge suit.
