als Deckplatte des Hochgrabes des hl. Goars diente.
Ein gotisches Triptychon (um 1470) aus der Schule
des Hausbuchmeisters ist Zentrum des wertvollen
Hochaltars. Als Glockenturm dient das ehemalige
Koblenzer Tor an dem die älteste Goardarstellung,
ein ehemaliger Gewölbeschlussstein der Stiftskirche, angebracht ist.

The Catholic Parish Church (Pfarrkirche) contains
a Goar epitaph (14th century), which formerly was
the cover plate of the table tomb of St. Goar in
the Collegiate Church (Stiftskirche). The centre of
the precious high altar is a Gothic tryptich from
the Hausbuchmeister school (approx. 1470). The
former Koblenz Gate serves as bell tower, featuring
the oldest depiction of St. Goar, a former key stone
from the Collegiate Church.

Church was a popular pilgrimage destination

Die Stadt St. Goar verdankt ihren Namen dem heiligen Goar, der im 6. Jhd.
am Platz der heutigen Stiftskirche als Einsiedler lebte und eine Kapelle
erbaute. Aus der Zelle des Heiligen Goars entwickelte sich vor 765 eines
der ältesten Klöster Deutschlands. Im 12. Jhd. wurde die Grafen von
Katzenelnbogen als Schirmvögte über das Kloster eingesetzt und mit dem
Rheinzoll belehnt. Sie erbauten 1245 die Burg Rheinfels. Die Burg ist heute
die größte und eine der großartigsten Burgruinen am Rhein.

The town of St. Goar was named after the Saint, who built a chapel and
lived as a hermit on the site of today's Collegiate Church (Stiftskirche) in
the 6th century. Before 765, the hermitage of Saint Goar became one of
Germany's earliest monasteries. During the 12th century, the Counts of
Katzenelnbogen were assigned as patrons of the monastery and awarded
toll rights for the Rhine. They built Castle Rheinfels in 1245. Today it is the
largest and one of the most impressive castle ruins on the Rhine.
