GOVERNING MAYOR OF BERLIN
Berlin extends a warm welcome to the participants of the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar
2014. It is an honour for our city to host this important medical-scientific congress.
For many people tinnitus poses a serious threat to health and quality of life. It is estimated
that, in Germany alone, more than eleven million people at least temporarily suffer from the
irritating tinnitus noises. And experts predict that the number of those affected will continue
to rapidly increase. Which makes it all the more important that considerable effort continue
to be made in the research, diagnoses and treatment of this widespread disease.
In Berlin in particular there is the state-of-the-art tinnitus centre of the Charité that, as the
largest German specialized facility of its kind, enjoys a great reputation among sufferers as
well as in the international research community. Since 2011 the German Tinnitus Foundation
Charité has also been committed to research, education and prevention.
As you can see, Berlin offers an excellent professional environment for a successful congress.
In addition to the Charité, a leading light of modern medical research and practice, here you
find a large spectrum of hospitals supported by various institutions, excellent universities as
well as a great number of highly renowned scientific institutions that in many cases conduct
cutting-edge research and provide young academics with outstanding opportunities. Above
all, there are many innovative enterprises in the areas of biotechnology, medical technology
and pharmaceutics. They hallmark Berlin as a modern health-metropolis of international
repute.
It is in this spirit that I wish you not only a fruitful professional exchange within the framework
of the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar 2014, but also a thoroughly lovely stay in the German
capital city, from which you may take lots of new inspirations home with you.

Dear congress participants,
Dear colleagues,
It is my personal pleasure to welcome you here in Berlin for the XI. International Tinnitus
Seminar. The three hundred year old Charité University Hospital as well as Berlin are settings
well known for special events, extraordinary encounters and also for outstanding research.
As Head of the Tinnitus Center at the Charité University Hospital Berlin and as the Congress
President of the ITS 2014, I want to thank all of you who have travelled from more than 50
different countries and five continents for enriching this congress with your professional
experience and expertise and also for boosting the exchange of thought.
The I. International Tinnitus Seminar was organized in 1979 by colleagues from the State
University of New York. Since then, ten International Tinnitus Seminars have been held all
over the world to communicate the latest findings and progress of research and treatment.
The ultimate goal was and is till today to better understand tinnitus and to develop successful
therapies.
During the four days of XI. International Tinnitus Seminar in Berlin, we will address four main
topics: basic research, plasticity, comorbidity and treatment. Presentations of outstanding
keynote speakers and a great number of oral presentations and posters should spark
discussions and reflect the multi-disciplinary approaches in tinnitus research and treatment.
I am confident that the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar will be a milestone in our journey
towards a cure for tinnitus!

Dear congress participants,
On behalf of the German Tinnitus Foundation Charité, I warmly welcome you to the
XI. International Tinnitus Seminar 2014.
One of the chief concerns of our foundation is to promote international communication in
the scientific community. It is our conviction that we can move forward in the highly complex
field of tinnitus research and therapy only if you, the experts, share the knowledge and
experience you have gained. We therefore thank you for your specific contributions at this
international congress.
In your countries the situation may be different, but in Germany too little regard is still paid to
the suffering tinnitus causes. The XI. International Tinnitus Seminar will help focus attention
on the problem in Germany.
Our Foundation was set up three years ago as a civil society initiative to provide enduring
financial support for research. The founders also stipulated that we were to engage in
preventive work. A particular target group for our efforts is young people. We invite you to
take a look at our website, where we report on all aspects of our work. We are interested in
cooperating internationally, and would welcome any proposals.
We all know how important it is that figures in the public eye draw attention not only to
the suffering, but also to our efforts in research and therapy. We therefore thank three-time
Grammy winner Dianne Reeves and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz for their selfless
commitment in supporting this congress. Both are authentic ambassadors for our cause.
I wish you an enjoyable stay in our city and an enriching scientific exchange. The Foundation
is celebrating the congress with a charity concert at the French Cathedral (Französiche
Friedrichstadtkirche). You are heartily invited to attend.

PROF. DR. HEIDI OLZE
Dear colleagues,
Welcome to Berlin! It gives me personal pleasure to welcome you here in Berlin, the capital of
Germany, for the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar.
Berlin is an open-minded, cosmopolitan city with an interesting history. It is a city of culture,
politics, media and science. Visitors from all over the world love the unique flair of it and I
sincerely hope that you will enjoy it as well.
The venue of our congress is the historical campus of Europe’s largest, three hundred yearsold university hospital – Charité, home of eleven Nobel Price winners in medicine, physiology
and chemistry.
The XI. International Tinnitus Seminar will continue the tradition of previous ITS congresses
and focus on all aspects regarding tinnitus as an interdisciplinary field: basic research, novel
diagnostic, imaging and therapeutic methods of treatment of comorbid diseases.
A particular focus will be put on the emerging issue of cochlear implants and implantable
hearing aids as devices that positively influence tinnitus. It is a fascinating field, in which, in
recent times, there have been groundbreaking new developments.
We are awaiting an inspiring congress that will not only address the latest developments in all
fields of tinnitus, but also create open discussions and interdisciplinary exchanges between
all specialists involved in tinnitus.
I wish you a successful congress in a creative and relaxed atmosphere that will encourage an
exchange of knowledge in all fields related to tinnitus.

GERMAN TINNITUS FOUNDATION CHARITÉ
Inadequate support for research in Germany and a lack of public
awareness of the seriousness of tinnitus induced a number of
enterprises and personalities to set up the Foundation in 2011. It
pursues the following goals:
a to provide financial support for research
a to inform the public about tinnitus and hearing disorders
ato engage in target group-specific prevention work, especially
among young people.
The Foundation also seeks to promote international science
communication. It has therefore assumed responsibility for
organising the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar 2014. What
other platform for science communication at the highest level
could be more suitable than this international congress at which
outstanding experts present their latest findings and subject
them to critical scrutiny?
Two world stars have attested to the outstanding importance of
the ITS 2014 in Berlin. American jazz singer and Grammy winner
Dianne Reeves has become ambassador of the ITS 2014. And
Austrian Oscar winner Christoph Waltz will be addressing words
of welcome to the congress. The German Tinnitus Foundation
Charité thanks both of them for their exemplary commitment.

To bring the people affected by tinnitus into direct contact with the
XI. International Tinnitus Seminar, the Foundation is organising
an informational event open to the public on Saturday, 24 May
2014. This event has already aroused a great deal of interest from
patients and media alike.

The Speaker’s Center is located on the first floor of the LangenbeckVirchow-Haus next to the Langenbeck Room. Speakers are asked
to hand in their CD-ROM or USB stick containing the PowerPoint
presentation (IBM format or compatible, no multisession) at the
latest three hours prior to the presentation. On-site technical staff
will offer support. Due to time and technical reasons we kindly
ask the speakers not to use their own notebook. In the Speaker's
Center there are several PC working stations, where speakers can
also work on their presentation charts in a quiet area. Technical
staff will be happy to assist.

CLOAKROOM
A cloakroom can be found in the main foyer of the LangenbeckVirchow-Haus from Wednesday, 21 May through Saturday, 24
May 2014. The cloakroom will be open during regular congress
opening hours and is free of charge. Participants can also store
their luggage there.
LUNCH BREAKS
Light lunches will be served for registered participants from
13:00 until 14:30 from Wednesday, 21 May through Saturday,
24 May 2014. The catering stations are located in the main foyer
of the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus.
HOW TO GET TO THE CONGRESS VENUE
Arriving by air
From Tegel Airport take the TXL bus to Karlplatz, from where it is
approximately 3 minutes by foot in the direction of the Charité.
From the opposite side of the street (Schumannstr. / Luisenstr.)
you can also take Bus 147 for one stop to the Charité-Campus
Mitte bus stop. The bus stops directly in front of the LangenbeckVirchow-Haus.
From Schönefeld Airport take the shuttle bus to the train station
Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld. From here take the regional train
RB 22 to Friedrichstraße or S-Bahn S 9 to Ostkreuz and then S 5
to Friedrichstraße; here take Bus 147 (towards Leopoldplatz) as far
as the Charité-Campus Mitte bus stop. The bus stops directly in
front of the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus.
Transfer times by taxi:
Tegel Airport: approximately 20 minutes
Schönefeld Airport: approximately 50 – 60 minutes
Arriving by train
From the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) take Bus 147
towards Puschkinallee as far as the Luisenstraße / Charité bus
stop. The bus stops directly in front of the Langenbeck-VirchowHaus. From Ostbahnhof take the S-Bahn S 5, S 7 or S 75 as far as
Friedrichstraße, and from there Bus 147 (towards Leopoldplatz) as
far as the Charité-Campus Mitte bus stop.

The XI. International Tinnitus Seminar comes to a festive conclusion
with a charity concert at the Französische Friedrichstadtkirche
(Gendarmenmarkt) on 24 May 2014 organized by the German
Tinnitus Foundation Charité. International artists will be
performing in support of the Foundation's youth prevention work.
Kilian Nauhaus, organist at the Französischer Dom since 1987,
has gained an outstanding reputation far beyond Germany as an
interpreter of classical and contemporary organ music. On the
famous Eule organ, he plays works by Johann Sebastian Bach and
Charles-Marie Widor.

The ambience of a historic factory site, modern equipment
and facilities and the fascinating history of the site make the
Kalkscheune a very special venue for the Gala Dinner as part of
the XI. International Tinnitus Seminar in Berlin.
Guests will be greeted in the lovely courtyard with a glass of
sparkling wine. The buffet dinner will then be served in the upstairs
gallery hall. House wine, beer, water and coffee will be included
In 2011 the Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra had already given
a benefit concert to launch the German Tinnitus Foundation
Charité. We are grateful for their continued support through the
Orchestra Academy for this concert. The Orchestra Academy of
the Berlin Philharmonic, founded by Herbert von Karajan, fosters
young international artists, three of whom will be appearing:
a Patrik Hofer and Thomas Schleicher, trumpet, play works by
Antonio VIVALDI and Francesco MANFREDINI.
a Rino Kageyama, harp, performs two pieces by Henriette RENIÉ.
a The Tango-Trio CAYAO: The three musicians Iskandar Widjaja,
Jarkko Riihimäki and Ander Perrino transport their audience
into a world of emotion, of love and longing. In fervent narrative,
CAYAO interprets melancholy Finnish melodies and tango from
Buenos Aires.
