Before the Iowa Western game on Oct. 25, HCC had at least one interception in the first eight games this season and had a pick in 16 straight games dating back to last season. That streak was snapped by the Reivers. Dating back to 2012, the Blue Dragons have had at least one interception in 27 of the last 29 games. This season, eight different Blue Dragons have interceptions. Darius Wright and Lakel Bass have a team-high three picks. The Blue Dragons posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1982 as the Blue Dragons blanked Independence 58-0 at Emmott Field. Hutchinson shut out Independence for the third-straight season, outscoring the Pirates 203-0. It’s the seventh time in program history that HCC has shut out an opponent three or more times in a row, the first time since 1973-75 when the Dragons shut out Pratt three-straight times. HCC was impressive defensively against the Pirates, holding an opponent to negative rushing yardage and less than 100 total yards for the second consecutive game. Independence had just three first downs and 25 total offensive yards (53 passing, minus-28 rushing). Hutchinson tallied 16 tackles for loss, including three quarterback sacks. Independence (1-7, 1-6) had 8 of 18 possessions go for negative yardage. The Pirates went 3-and-out nine times. The furthest Indy drove was to the HCC 26 where that drive ended in the best scoring chance of the night, a missed 43yard field goal. HCC had five takeaways. Jeremiah Ledbetter had 12 tackles, while Marquavius Lewis had 11 tackles, including four tackles for loss. Both had quarterback sacks. Jaylon Myers had a highlight-reel interception, his nation-leading seventh of the season, when he leaps high in the air and pulled down a pass one-handed for the pick. Shattle Fenteng, Christian Goodlett and Glen Hilliard all had interceptions and Dondre Chanet had a fumble recovery. Offensively, the Blue Dragons had three punts and an interception on their first four possessions before kicking it in gear. After that slow start, the Dragons scored on 5 of their final 6 first-half possessions and added a special teams safety to take control of the game, leading 37-0 at intermission. The Blue Dragons had their highest scoring quarter, posting 30 points in the second quarter. Hutchinson rolled up 486 total yards, getting a season-high 227 yards rushing and 259 passing yards. Kamara Named NJCAA National Offensive POTW Alvin Kamara’s spine-tingling effort helped the Blue Dragons erase a sevenpoint deficit in the final 3:44 on Oct. 4 at No. 14 Coffeyville and lead Hutchinson to a 42-35 victory over the Red Ravens. On Wednesday, Kamara was named the NJCAA’s National Offensive Player of the Week. With the Blue Dragons trailing 35-28 with 3:44 to play in the 4th quarter and HCC facing 3rd and 12 at its own 35, Kamara single-handedly willed the Dragons to tie the game with a heart-pounding 65-yard reception. Kamara took a pass in the flat, broke four tackles and made others miss before sprinting up the middle for the game-tying touchdown with 2:28 to play. Then with the ball at the HCC 2 with 41 seconds to play, Kamara took a handoff 5 yards in the end zone and bolted out to the Hutch 40. Two plays later, with no timeouts, Kamara took another handoff, went around the right side and traveled 12 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 7 seconds remaining in the game. Dickey jumped up and took the long pass down the sideline right out of the hands of a Butler defender and sprinted the final 35 yards into the end zone. That TD gave HCC its first twopossession lead of the second half early in the fourth quarter. Equally important to the Blue Dragons, two third-down receptions in the second half that kept eventual scoring drives alive. (Continued on Next Page) Game 11 vs. Independence 7 Hutchinson Community College football coach Rion Rhoades announced on August 28 that Blue Dragon football will retire the No. 84 jersey of Blue Dragon AllAmerican Cordarrelle Patterson this season. The ceremony will take place at halftime of Hutchinson’s regular-season finale against Independence on November 8 at Gowans Stadium. This is the first time that Blue Dragon Football will retire a jersey in the 83-year history of the program. The Minnesota Vikings – Patterson is in his second season with the Vikings – are on their bye week that week and will allow the former Blue Dragon great to attend the ceremony. Patterson is the first-ever first-round NFL Draft pick in program history after being taken with the 29th overall pick by the Vikings in the 2013 NFL Draft. Tying an NFL record with a 109-yard kickoff return and being the only 2013 rookie to be named All-Pro are just a few of Patterson’s first-year highlights with the Vikings. Patterson was only the third Blue Dragon ever to be a two-time NJCAA All-American. Patterson was also named the 2011 Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Year. When he completed his HCC career, he owned 16 career or single-season or single-game Blue Dragon Dragons records. One year ago at Dodge City, the Blue Dragons committed four turnovers and had numerous other mistakes in 40-34 overtime loss to the Conquistadors. After their first two offensive plays on Saturday, there were flashbacks to last season and the potential to be down 14-0 just minutes into the game. Instead, the Blue Dragon defense minimized the damage, limiting Dodge City to just five points. On the first play of the game, HCC fumbled at the Dragon 24. Dodge City (2-3, 2-1) settled for a 40-yard Dillon Burkhart field goal. On Hutchinson’s next play, the Conquistadors forced a second fumble at the HCC 25 and had a chance to recover the bouncing ball in the end zone. The Dragons caught a break as the ball rolled out the back of the end zone for a safety and Dodge City led 5-0 with 12:16 remaining in the first quarter. After the free kick following the safety, the Conqs were on the move again, but the defense thwarted the advance when sophomore Marquavius Lewis sacked Dodge quarterback Deondre Ford, forcing a fumble that Darius Wright recovered and returned to the HCC 49. The Blue Dragons answered with a 12-play, 51-yard march all on the ground with all three running backs getting carries. Things looked even more bleak when the Blue Dragons were facing a third-and-12 from their own 35. Quarterback Kylen Binn flipped a screen to Kamara, who was surrounded by four Coffeyville defenders. Kamara fought off those four Ravens, spun away and weaved through several more defenders before breaking away and sprinted for an improbable 65-yard touchdown to tie the game at 35-all with 2:28 to play in regulation. Coffeyville drove from its 35 to the Blue Dragon 32, but defensive end Jeremiah Ledbetter came up with a huge sack of Gilmore on first down and then the Raven QB threw consecutive incompletes to bring up fourth down and a punt to the Hutch 4-yard line. Custis ran for 201 yards on 27 carries to lead the Blue Dragon offense, scoring one touchdown. He averaged 7.4 yards per carry. Custis’ previous career high was 146 yards against Fort Scott in September. Tory Smith broke the 100-yard plateau for the first time, running for 103 yards on just nine carries and one touchdown.
