The Matchup
With a share of the league title already in the hip pocket, the No. 5-ranked
Hutchinson Community College football team on Saturday looks to clinch the program’s first outright Jayhawk Conference championship in 45 years.
The Blue Dragons (9-1) will meet Independence (0-9) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at
Gowans Stadium in the regular-season finale. The Blue Dragons last won a Jayhawk Conference crown in 1995, a shared title with Garden City. HCC hasn’t won
the league outright since 1969.
The championship would be the seventh league crown in program history.
Saturday’s game also carries another significance as for the first time in program
history, the Blue Dragons will retire a jersey. Two-time All-American and current Minnesota Viking Cordarrelle Patterson returns to Gowans Stadium to have his No. 84
jersey retired.
A victory on Saturday would tie a team record for wins. Hutchinson last won 10
games in 2010. The Dragons also achieved 10 victories in 1947, 1948, 1969 and
1995.
Hutchinson earned win No. 9 last week with a season-high 351 rushing yards and
five rushing touchdowns in a 38-7 victory at Ellsworth last Saturday. The Blue Dragons racked up all those rushing yards without the nation’s No. 6-leading rusher Alvin
Kamara. Travis Custis ran for 201 yards and Tory Smith added 103 yards.
Independence comes into Saturday off a bye week last week. On Oct. 25, the
Pirates lost 24-3 to Fort Scott.
The Pirates have been outscored by an average of 27.1 points per game.
The Coaches
Hutchinson: Rion Rhoades is in his eighth season with the Blue Dragons. He has
a 61-28 record at HCC and 68-33 in his ninth season as a head coach. Rhoades is
5-0 in bowl games at Hutchinson.
Independence: Steve Carson is in his fifth season with the Pirates. He carries a
9-38 record at Independence.

Dragon Defense On An
Interception Course
Since the start of the 2012 season, the Blue Dragon defense has been stellar
at stopping opposing drives with interceptions.
Before the Iowa Western game on Oct. 25, HCC had at least one interception
in the first eight games this season and had a pick in 16 straight games dating
back to last season. That streak was snapped by the Reivers.
Dating back to 2012, the Blue Dragons have had at least one interception in
27 of the last 29 games.
This season, eight different Blue Dragons have interceptions. Darius Wright
and Lakel Bass have a team-high three picks.
Riley Hunsicker’s interception was returned for a touchdown vs. Bethany on Aug.

Hutchinson football has started a season
10-0 three different times in team history. The Blue Dragons were 10-0 to start
the season in 1947, 1948 and 1969.
2013 Hutch-Indy Game: A Look Back.
The Blue Dragons posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1982
as the Blue Dragons blanked Independence 58-0 at Emmott Field.
Hutchinson shut out Independence for the third-straight season, outscoring
the Pirates 203-0. It’s the seventh time in program history that HCC has shut out
an opponent three or more times in a row, the first time since 1973-75 when the
Dragons shut out Pratt three-straight times.
HCC was impressive defensively against the Pirates, holding an opponent to
negative rushing yardage and less than 100 total yards for the second consecutive game. Independence had just three first downs and 25 total offensive yards
(53 passing, minus-28 rushing).
Hutchinson tallied 16 tackles for loss, including three quarterback sacks.
Independence (1-7, 1-6) had 8 of 18 possessions go for negative yardage. The
Pirates went 3-and-out nine times. The furthest Indy drove was to the HCC 26
where that drive ended in the best scoring chance of the night, a missed 43yard field goal. HCC had five takeaways.
Jeremiah Ledbetter had 12 tackles, while Marquavius Lewis had 11 tackles,
including four tackles for loss. Both had quarterback sacks. Jaylon Myers had
a highlight-reel interception, his nation-leading seventh of the season, when he
leaps high in the air and pulled down a pass one-handed for the pick. Shattle
Fenteng, Christian Goodlett and Glen Hilliard all had interceptions and Dondre
Chanet had a fumble recovery.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons had three punts and an interception on their
first four possessions before kicking it in gear. After that slow start, the Dragons
scored on 5 of their final 6 first-half possessions and added a special teams
safety to take control of the game, leading 37-0 at intermission. The Blue Dragons had their highest scoring quarter, posting 30 points in the second quarter.
Hutchinson rolled up 486 total yards, getting a season-high 227 yards rushing
and 259 passing yards.
Kamara Named NJCAA National Offensive POTW
Alvin Kamara’s spine-tingling effort helped the Blue Dragons erase a sevenpoint deficit in the final 3:44 on Oct. 4 at No. 14 Coffeyville and lead Hutchinson
to a 42-35 victory over the Red Ravens. On Wednesday, Kamara was named
the NJCAA’s National Offensive Player of the Week.

Kamara, a 5-foot-11, 207-pound freshman from Norcross, Georgia, rushed for
a career-high 220 yards against Coffeyville, accounted 283 all-purpose yards and
scored four touchdowns, including the game winner with 7 seconds remaining.
With the Blue Dragons trailing 35-28 with 3:44 to play in the 4th quarter and
HCC facing 3rd and 12 at its own 35, Kamara single-handedly willed the Dragons to tie the game with a heart-pounding 65-yard reception. Kamara took a
pass in the flat, broke four tackles and made others miss before sprinting up the
middle for the game-tying touchdown with 2:28 to play.
Then with the ball at the HCC 2 with 41 seconds to play, Kamara took a
handoff 5 yards in the end zone and bolted out to the Hutch 40. Two plays later,
with no timeouts, Kamara took another handoff, went around the right side and
traveled 12 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 7 seconds remaining in the
game.
Lewis Tapped NJCAA Defensive Player
of the
C.P. to have Jersey retired Nov. 8
Week
Sophomore defensive end Marquavius Lewis earned NJCAA National Defensive
Player of the Week honors after an exceptional outing in the No. 5 Blue Dragons’
43-26 victory over Dodge City on Sept. 27.
Lewis is the second Blue Dragon this season to earn national weekly honors, joining Juwan Dickey, who was named NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept.
17 for his outstanding effort against Butler.
Lewis, a 6-foot-4, 278-pound defensive end from Greenwood, South Carolina,
had a dominant game had a dominant game with eight total tackles, three of which
solo stops.
He had 3.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks, including a sack/fumble
that the Blue Dragons recovered as one of three Blue Dragon takeaways in the
game. Lewis also had two quarterback hurries.
Dickey Named NJCAA Offensive Player
of the
Week
Freshman wide receiver Juwan Dickey was selected as the NJCAA’s National
Offensive Player of the Week after his Sept. 13 performance against Butler. Dickey,
a 6-foot, 202-pound freshman from Marietta, Georgia, had a huge impact in HCC’s
35-26 victory over Butler, scoring three touchdowns, two coming in the fourth quarter.
For the game, Dickey had season highs of eight receptions for 143 yards.
He had touchdown receptions of 7, 72 and 6 yards. His caught three of HCC
quarterback Dalton Demos’ five TD passes. The 7-yarder came in the first quarter to
give Hutchinson a 7-0 lead.
With Hutchinson leading 22-20 in the fourth quarter, Dickey caught a highlightreel 72-yard touchdown that gave HCC a two-possession lead. Dickey jumped up
and took the long pass down the sideline right out of the hands of a Butler defender
and sprinted the final 35 yards into the end zone. That TD gave HCC its first twopossession lead of the second half early in the fourth quarter.
Equally important to the Blue Dragons, two third-down receptions in the second
half that kept eventual scoring drives alive.
Blue Dragon Jayhawk Conference Players
of the
Week
l October 7 - Alvin Kamara (Offense); Anthony Autry (Special Teams): Both
made huge contributions to No. 5 Hutchinson’s come-from-behind 42-35 victory at
No. 14 Coffeyville. Blue Dragon running back Alvin Kamara and return specialist
Anthony Autry were named the Jayhawk Conference’s Offensive and Special Teams
Players of the Week, respectively.
Kamara, a 5-11, 207-pound freshman from Norcross, Georgia, rushed for 220
yards, accounted 283 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns, including the
game winner with 7 seconds remaining.
Autry, a 6-4, 191-pound freshman also from Norcross, Georgia, had HCC’s first

Hutchinson Community College football coach Rion
Rhoades announced on August 28 that Blue Dragon
football will retire the No. 84 jersey of Blue Dragon AllAmerican Cordarrelle Patterson this season.
The ceremony will take place at halftime of Hutchinson’s regular-season finale against Independence on
November 8 at Gowans Stadium.
This is the first time that Blue Dragon Football will
retire a jersey in the 83-year history of the program.
The Minnesota Vikings – Patterson is in his second
season with the Vikings – are on their bye week that
week and will allow the former Blue Dragon great to
attend the ceremony.
Patterson is the first-ever first-round NFL Draft pick
in program history after being taken with the 29th
overall pick by the Vikings in the 2013 NFL Draft. Tying an NFL record with a 109-yard kickoff return and
being the only 2013 rookie to be named All-Pro are
just a few of Patterson’s first-year highlights with the
Vikings.
Patterson was only the third Blue Dragon ever to
be a two-time NJCAA All-American. Patterson was
also named the 2011 Jayhawk Conference Offensive
Player of the Year.
When he completed his HCC career, he owned 16
career or single-season or single-game Blue Dragon
Dragons records.
After HCC, Patterson played one season at the
University of Tennessee.

Four Blue Dragons Make Early 4-year Commitments
Four members of the 2014 Blue Dragon football team have already verbally
committed to FBS programs for next season.
Running back Alvin Kamara has verballed to the University of Tennessee. He
came to Hutchinson from another Southeastern Conference school, Alabama.
Defensive end Marquavius Lewis will also be in the SEC next season as the
South Carolina native has committed to the University of South Carolina.
Linebacker Claude George has committed to the ACC’s University of Miami.
Defensive end Jeremiah Ledbetter is the third player to commit to an SEC
program, committing to the University of Arkansas.
Dragons, Jayhawk Begin New Scheduling Alliance
The 2014 schedule will be very different for the Blue Dragon and the entire
Jayhawk Conference begin a new scheduling alliance with the Iowa Community
College Athletic Conference.
The eight Jayhawk Conference teams will all play Iowa Western Iowa Central
and Ellsworth for at least the next two seasons. The games will not count toward each league’s respective championship race.
For the past eight years, the Jayhawk Conference locked up with the Southwest Junior College Football Conference in an early-season challenge. The
new scheduling alliance puts an end to that.
The other major change will be that there will no longer be a postseason Region VI playoff in November. All eight Jayhawk teams will have up to 11 regular
season games and a bowl game if they qualify. Region VI has had a playoff
system in place since 1982.
Dragons Picked 2nd In Jayhawk Coaches Preseason Poll

games in the fourth quarter or later, including a regular-season overtime victory
over Hutchinson in Week 3.

defensive line coach last season. Dion Meneley remains as the defensive coordinator.
The two new coaches on staff are Darrell Ballard and Todd Middleton.
Ballard will be the receivers coach and the pass-game coordinator. Middleton will
be the Blue Dragons’ defensive line coach.
Offensive line coach Tyler Brock will also be the run-game coordinator this season. Thad Brown and Greg Cross both return for their second seasons on the Blue
Dragon sideline.
Brown is the defensive backs coach, strength and conditioning coach and recruiting coordinator. Cross is HCC’s quarterbacks coach.

2014 Blue Dragon Game Notes Game 3
No. 6 Hutchinson vs.
No. 9 Butler
September 13 - El Dorado, KS

26
The last time that HCC defeated Butler in football, head
coach Rion Rhoades was just
three years removed from playing for the Blue Dragons and
the current roster’s ages ranged
from 1 to 3 years old.
The much talked-about losing streak to the Grizzlies – 23
games in duration – ended on
Sept. 13 at BG Products Stadium. The No. 6 Blue Dragons
survived a first half filled with
self-inflicted wounds to defeat
the No. 9 Grizzlies 35-26, earning a victory over Butler for the
first time since 1997.
After jumping out to a 13-0
lead just 5 minutes, 26 seconds
into the game, the Blue Dragons
(3-0, 2-0 Jayhawk Conference)
started committing mistake after
mistake – four turnovers and six
penalties – and Butler took full
advantage. Tied at 13-all, the
Grizzlies took a 20-13 lead into
halftime after Bakari Triggs intercepted a Kylen Binn pass for a
35-yard touchdown with 1:21 to
play before intermission.
But instead of letting those
mistakes snowball into the
second half, the Blue Dragons
regrouped in the locker room,
and dominated the third quarter.
Hutchinson rallied from a halftime deficit for the eighth time in
the Rhoades’ era, out-gaining
Butler 127-23 in the third quarter. The Dragons took a 22-20
lead into the fourth quarter.
HCC sandwiched two Juwan
Dickey touchdown receptions
around a Butler touchdown and
then held the Grizzlies on downs

2014 Blue Dragon Game Notes Game 4
No. 5 Hutchinson vs.
Iowa Central
September 20 - Gowans Stadium
42
14
On the first play of the second
half, running back Alvin Kamara
lit the fuse for a HCC third-quarter explosion that helped put
Iowa Central away.
Playing a game in the KansasIowa Scheduling Alliance for the
first time, the No. 5-ranked Blue
Dragons needed that big third
quarter as Hutchinson defeated
Iowa Central 42-14.
Hutchinson (4-0) out-gained
Iowa Central 242 yards to 4 in
a 21-0 third quarter that broke
open a 14-point game at halftime. Over the first 5 minutes, 14
seconds of the third quarter, the
Dragons racked up 203 yards
and three touchdowns.
Kamara started the rampage
with a 71-yard touchdown run
on the first play from scrimmage of the third period. After a
three-and-out, Kamara patiently
worked his way down the sideline for a 52-yard touchdown run.
HCC forced another Triton punt
and two plays after that, Kylen
Binn connected with Anthony
Autry for a 64-yard touchdown.
With 9:46 to play in the third,
the Dragon lead ballooned to
42-7. Kamara had three thirdquarter carries for 123 yards and
two scores.
Kamara became the first Blue
Dragon to score four rushing
touchdowns in a game since
Angelo Pease against Highland
in 2010. Kamara rushed for a
game- and season-high 180
yards on just 15 carries to lead
a 250-yard Blue Dragon rushing
attack. He had two short TD
runs in the first half.

total yards, getting 223 yard drives. ICCC’s first seven pos-
combined yards through the
air with quarterbacks Binn and
Dalton Demos.
Binn was 11 of 19 passing for
149 yards with two touchdowns
and an interception. Demos
was 6 of 17 for 74 yards. Bryce
Harvey led the receivers with six
catches, but for only 28 yards.
Defensively, with the exceptions of one drive in each half, the
Dragons devoured the Tritons.
Iowa Central had 145 total
yards (71 rushing, 74 passing). The Tritons had 121 of
sessions of the second half
netted a minus 11 yards before
rolling up 80 on its final drive
of the game that ended with a
50-yard TD run by quarterback
Corey Bertini.
The Dragon defense, led by
Kyle Wilson’s eight tackles, tied a
season high 14 tackles for loss.
The Dragons sacked three
Iowa Central quarterbacks five
times.
Special teams set up Hutchinson’s first score when the Blue
Dragons blocked a punt and was
21
recovered by Wilson at the Triton
2. Kamara covered the rest of
the distance on a pitch to the left
side for HCC’s first touchdown
and a 7-0 lead with 12:42 remaining in the opening quarter.
Two possessions later, the
Blue Dragons went on one of
their longest drives of the season, taking over at the HCC 15.
The Dragons went 85 yards in
15 plays, converting one fourth
down on the drive, and took a
14-0 lead on Kamara’s 1-yard
touchdown plunge with 54 seconds remaining in the opening
quarter.

2014 Blue Dragon Game Notes Game 5
No. 5 Hutchinson vs.
Dodge City
September 27 - Dodge City, KS
43
26
The No. 5 Blue Dragons overcame two first-half turnovers,
a bad punt snap out of the end
zone and a ton of penalties to
defeat Dodge City 43-26 on
Sept. 27 in Dodge City.
One year ago at Dodge City,
the Blue Dragons committed four
turnovers and had numerous
other mistakes in 40-34 overtime
loss to the Conquistadors. After
their first two offensive plays on
Saturday, there were flashbacks
to last season and the potential
to be down 14-0 just minutes
into the game. Instead, the Blue
Dragon defense minimized the
damage, limiting Dodge City to
just five points.
On the first play of the game,
HCC fumbled at the Dragon 24.
Dodge City (2-3, 2-1) settled
for a 40-yard Dillon Burkhart
field goal. On Hutchinson’s next
play, the Conquistadors forced
a second fumble at the HCC 25
and had a chance to recover the
bouncing ball in the end zone.
The Dragons caught a break as
the ball rolled out the back of the
end zone for a safety and Dodge
City led 5-0 with 12:16 remaining in the first quarter.
After the free kick following
the safety, the Conqs were on
the move again, but the defense
thwarted the advance when
sophomore Marquavius Lewis
sacked Dodge quarterback Deondre Ford, forcing a fumble that
Darius Wright recovered and
returned to the HCC 49.
The Blue Dragons answered
with a 12-play, 51-yard march
all on the ground with all three
running backs getting carries.

Jayhawk Conference victory
over No. 14 Coffeyville
The Blue Dragons’ bid for a
first Jayhawk Conference crown
since 1995 was in serious jeopardy when Coffeyville’s Cedrick
Wilson caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Brock Gilmore
with 3:44 remaining in the fourth
quarter to give the Red Ravens
a 35-28 lead.
Things looked even more
bleak when the Blue Dragons
were facing a third-and-12 from
their own 35. Quarterback Kylen
Binn flipped a screen to Kamara,
who was surrounded by four
Coffeyville defenders. Kamara
fought off those four Ravens,
spun away and weaved through
several more defenders before
breaking away and sprinted for
an improbable 65-yard touchdown to tie the game at 35-all
with 2:28 to play in regulation.
Coffeyville drove from its

Nov. 8. Highland falls to 5-3
overall and 2-2 in the Jayhawk
Conference.
The victory was also the 60th
for Blue Dragon coach Rion
Rhoades at Hutchinson.
The Blue Dragons broke a
program record for points in half,
scoring 52 points in the opening
half on Saturday. That beat the
49 points scored in the first half
against Highland in a 90-7 victory over the Scotties in 2011.
Hutchinson had 385 total
yards in the first half, passing
for 324 yards and rushing for
61. The Blue Dragons also tied
a team record for touchdown
passes with six – four by Dalton
Demos and two from Kylen Binn.
The Dragons scored on eight of
11 first-half possessions (seven

For the game, Highland held
Hutchinson to a season-low 139

2014 Blue Dragon Game Notes Game 9
No. 4 Hutchinson at
No. 2 Iowa Western
October 25 - Council Bluffs, IA

The No. 2 Reivers made a
multitude of big plays – including three scoring plays of 40 or
more yards – to defeat the No.
4 Blue Dragons 58-34 in the
NJCAA national game of the
week.
The Blue Dragons drop their
first game of the season and fall
to 8-1. Iowa Western improves
to 9-0 in the first-ever meeting
between the two programs.
Iowa Western opened the
game with a nine-play, 68-yard
scoring drive and then took
advantage of a bad Blue Dragon
shotgun snap that quarterback
Dalton Demos had to cover in
the end zone for a safety. The
Blue Dragons trailed 9-0 just
3 minute, 39 seconds into the
game.
Hutchinson made it a one
possession game twice after
that in the first quarter, but Iowa
Western immediately answered
each challenge. Iowa Western
led 16-14 after one quarter.
The Reivers led 30-14 in
the second quarter, but HCC
appeared to be building some
momentum. Kylen Binn connected with DeQuan Bowman
for a 19-yard touchdown on
fourth down to make it 30-21
with 55 seconds remaining in
the opening half. But the Reivers
answered with a long kickoff
return and a Tay Bender-to-Taj
Williams 42-yard touchdown
strike with 29 seconds to play in
the first half for a 37-21 halftime
lead.
The Blue Dragons still had
many chances in the game.

No. 2 Iowa Western
October 25 - Council Bluffs, IA

The No. 7-ranked Blue Dragons racked up a season-high
351 rushing yards and not one
came from Alvin Kamara, the
nation’s No. 6 rusher.
Travis Custis ran for more
than 200 yards and Tory Smith
ran for better than 100 as the
Blue Dragons rattled off 38
unanswered points en route to a
38-7 victory over Ellsworth at a
frigid Cadet Field.
Kamara did not suit up for the
game after being injured one
week before at Iowa Western.
That allowed the other running
backs in a deep Blue Dragon
stable to contribute. And contribute they did.
Custis ran for 201 yards on 27
carries to lead the Blue Dragon
offense, scoring one touchdown.
He averaged 7.4 yards per carry.
Custis’ previous career high was
146 yards against Fort Scott in
September.
Tory Smith broke the 100-yard
plateau for the first time, running
for 103 yards on just nine carries
and one touchdown. Smith also
made a big impact on special
teams by recovering a loose
football on a kickoff that led to a
Kassidy Lemons field goal late
in the second quarter.
This was the third time this
season that Hutchinson has had
two running backs rush for more
than 100 yards in a game. Custis is the second Blue Dragon to
reach 200 yards this season.
As a back-up this season,
Custis now has 722 yards rushing this season
The Blue Dragons are 41-7
