Our First Alumni Newsletter by!Joe Tomasso! Welcome to our inaugural alumni newsletter. We will try to send one out twice a year and content will be driven mainly by what our graduates send us. Hopefully we can help people reconnect with old classmates and professors. The Biology Department now consists of 50 faculty members, six staff members, about 100 MS students, about 30 PhD students, about 1,500 BS majors, and about 5,000 other students who take one or more of the many service courses offered in the Department. It is a big place and chaos reigns. Until the early 1990s, the Department was located in the Science Building near Old Main. Since then, it has moved to the Supple Science Building on West Campus. The Aquatic Resources (formerly Aquatic Biology) program was housed in the old fish hatchery buildings on the lower campus near the JC Kellam building. In 1983, the Freeman Aquatic Biology Building opened on this site. In 2011, the Department opened a new Research Greenhouse complex on North Street near the Supple Building. We also now have a field lab on Spring Lake. The next addition will be a set of seven research labs in the proposed Science and Engineering Building that will be located just downhill from Supple Science. Our web site (www.bio.txstate.edu) contains a wealth of information on programs, faculty, and departmental news. The web site also has a link to the departmental Facebook page. Our initial request to alumni for information had a great response. The “What’s Up?” section of the newsletter contains information on over 100 of our alumni. Hopefully, we will have a similar response for every newsletter. To make the newsletter a success, we need your help. If you move, get promoted, retire, have kids or grandkids, let us know. All communications related to the newsletter can be sent to me at [email protected]. Contributions for the next issue should be received by April 15th. ! Ken Wilson Named Texas State Distinguished Alumnus Kenneth Wilson received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas State in 1964 and 1966. After receiving his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, Ken completed post-doctoral work at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He taught and conducted research at the University of Zurich in Switzerland for ten years before relocating to California, where he was a researcher and Vice President for Biotechnology at Cetus Corp. and ABI Corp. In 2000, Wilson and his wife, Verena, traveled to Southeast Asia, where they discovered the region’s urgent need for modern services in areas ranging from education and healthcare to urban planning and clean water. They established the Kenneth J. and Verena Wilson Asian Faculty/Student Exchange Program through Texas State’s Center for International Studies. Under the program, Texas State faculty members and students help institutions in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam through the exchange of information and expertise in areas of need. Since 2008, Wilson has taught at the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia on numerous subjects such as molecular biology, biochemistry, toxic metals, fish genetics and inquiry-based learning.! Dr.!Kenneth!J.!Wilson Maureen Lemke, a Senior Lecturer in the Biology Department, recently wrote: “As a faculty member who has participated in a Wilson project, I can emphatically say that not only do people and institutions in Asia benefit, but Texas State participants also gain from the interaction. I was part of a team that wrote an inquiry-based integrated science curriculum for freshmen students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. The Wilson program has supported the team on two trips to Phnom Penh, where we initially observed the campus and searched for local materials to use in the curriculum and conducted a two-week support workshop. Last summer, we were part of a five-week workshop that introduced faculty members from two Cambodian universities to teaching by inquiry. This summer we will be taking Texas State students on a Study Abroad trip to work alongside Cambodian students in a science education program. Ken Wilson has had a farreaching impact both in Asia and at Texas State.” How far we’ve come: A biology laboratory in the Old Science Building, circa 1918 ! ! !!!!BIOLOGY!ON!THE!RIVER!!!!!!!|!Issue!Number!1!!•!!Winter!2014!! 3! ! ! Gary Aron puts down his chalk after 40 years ! by!Bob McLean, Regent’s Professor! I have had the privilege of having Dr. Gary Aron (center in photo at right, along with former gradaute students Eric Weaver, left, and Rodney Rohde) as a colleague and friend for over 20 years. During this time the microbiology program has grown from a small handful of students during the early 1990s to the second most popular major (behind general biology) in the department. As microbiology advisor and professor, Gary Aron played a key role in this growth. Dr. Aron joined Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State University) as an Assistant Professor in 1974, was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1980 and to full Professor in 1984. He was the inaugural recipient of the Homer E. Prince Professorship of Microbiology, a position he held from 2001 until 2013. He is originally from New York City and received his BS and MS in Microbiology at St. John’s University. He attended Penn State to study bacterial viruses (bacteriophages) and received his PhD in Microbiology in 1971. Gary and his wife Janet (also from the New York City area) moved to Houston, Texas, in 1971 so that he could do a postdoc at Baylor College of Medicine. Gary has taught a number of courses at Texas State, including non-majors Microbiology (Principles of Microbiology, Bio 2440) and is probably best known for teaching Virology (Bio 3442) and Immunology (Bio 4426). Students learned a lot from him (good science, professionalism and responsibility, as well as his love for Penn State). Dr. Aron was always well-prepared for his classes and labs and so, in that manner, students had a good example of professionalism and reliability. On at least one occasion, several students wore Penn State shirts during a Virology exam. Many students took Dr. Aron’s virology and immunology courses in preparation for medical and other professional programs. On several occasions, I have heard from our graduates who were in medical school about how well-prepared they were for the infectious disease part of their curriculum due to Dr. Aron’s classes. Gary has mentored a number graduate students who went on to distinguish themselves and the accompanying picture in this article shows two of them – Eric Weaver, now a faculty member at the Mayo Clinic, and Rodney Rohde, currently Professor and Chair of Clinical Lab Sciences Program at Texas State. At least two of his former graduate students completed medical school, and several had careers in public health laboratories including the Texas Department of Health. Gary was very active in the Texas Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), serving as branch treasurer from 2003 through 2011. He also helped organize five spring meetings and one fall meeting of the organization. Through the Texas Branch of the ASM, he indirectly mentored many students and young faculty members from other universities. The Texas Branch ASM honored him in 2012 with a lifetime service award. On behalf of the Department of Biology and particularly the microbiology program, we thank Gary for his over 40 years of service and wish him and his wife Janet well in their upcoming retirement. Dr. Aron can be contacted at [email protected]. ! ! !!!!BIOLOGY!ON!THE!RIVER!!!!!!!|!Issue!Number!1!!•!!Winter!2014!! 4! ! ! WHAT’S UP? Keeping tabs on our graduates 1953 Bonorden (‘75).
