We are pleased with the great start 2011 has
brought us at Siskin Hospital. We have made
many positive changes to our hospital, and will
continue to strive for excellence in all that we do.
We are excited to now offer all of our Inpatients
a private patient room! Renovations have
been completed throughout the hospital, and
the updated units are specifically designed
to best meet the needs of our rehabilitation
patients. The private rooms are spacious and
accommodating, with an open concept design
for ease of movement. The rooms feature private
bathrooms, specialized rehabilitation beds, and a
private closet area.
The renovations have also been extended to
include the redesign of our dedicated Stroke
and Brain Injury units. The renovations help
continue our mission of providing the best
treatment options, whether that be the dedicated
team of rehabilitation experts, the updated
facility, or the top-of-the-line therapy equipment
offered at Siskin Hospital. We aim to remain
as Chattanooga’s most comprehensive and
experienced rehabilitation hospital, providing
our patients with the best care and resources
available.
This year, we have also been privileged to
celebrate the employment anniversary of
383 staff members. Twenty employees have
been a part of the Caring People. Changing
Lives. team for 20 years or more, with 63
employees celebrating their 15th anniversary,
106 celebrating their 10th anniversary, and 194
celebrating their 5th anniversary. Nearly half of
our staff has been employed for at least 5 years!
This is a true testament to the dedication our
employees show Siskin Hospital and our patients
each and every day.

by Lindsay Wyatt
O
n Sunday, May 9, 2010, Megan Massey was
celebrating Mother’s Day with her family and
beautiful daughter, Addison, when she began feeling ill
with a terrible headache. When her migraine headache
worsened and she was unable to speak or stand, Megan
was rushed to the hospital.
After a mis-diagnosis and multiple hospital visits,
Megan’s family was told she had suffered a stroke at
the young age of 25. While Megan knew the entire time
that something wasn’t right, she had experienced partial
paralysis on her right side and was unable to communicate what was happening to her. “I couldn’t say anything. It was like a horror movie. It was scary,” Megan
explained.
Due to the lack of oxygen in her brain for nearly 12
hours, Megan was now fighting for her life. She was
taken to Erlanger Medical Center where she received
treatment and participated in the Ischemic Stroke System procedure that uses an electronic current to open
blood vessels and restore oxygen to the brain. It was
later determined that a small blood clot passed through
Megan’s heart and into her brain, causing the stroke.
Amazingly, Megan survived the stroke, but was faced
with a new road of obstacles. She was now partially
paralyzed on her right side and was unable to communicate as she previously did. After several weeks in the
hospital, she arrived at Siskin Hospital with very little
movement or ability to clearly speak and communicate.
This once vivacious young mother was now faced with
the inability to care for herself or her daughter.
“I just barely twitched my finger at first,” Megan explained when thinking about her arrival at Siskin
Hospital. She worked very
hard in Physical, Occupational, and Speech
therapies to regain movement and improve her fine
motor and cognitive skills. All the while, her goal was to
be able to take care of Addison again. Megan’s primary
Occupational Therapist, Jessica Thomas, knew that
caring for Addison was so important to Megan and her
family. Jessica said that’s what she wanted the most for
Megan…to be able to take care of her daughter and be a
mommy again. Addison was able to visit Megan everyday at Siskin Hospital and even stayed overnight on the
weekends to be with her.
Megan and Jessica developed a very special friendship
and even went on field trips downtown to help Megan
reintegrate into regular activities in the community. “I
got really close to my therapists and my nurses there.
They took their time with me… I honestly feel like they
cared and it wasn’t just a job. They were really special,”
Megan said of the staff at Siskin Hospital.
Megan spent one month as an Inpatient at Siskin
Hospital and was able to regain the ability to walk, talk,
“I loved it before,
and I still love
being a mom.”

he entire community joined forces
to make a dream come true for one Rossville family when
the Extreme Makeover Home Edition team came to Chattanooga in February. Patrick Sharrock and his family were the
recipients of a new custom home, designed to help 9-yearold Patrick, who suffers from Brittle Bones Disease. This
rare disease, called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, is a genetic
disorder that causes bones to easily break often. Patrick has
already suffered approximately 50 broken bones in his
short lifetime.
After speaking with producers from the show, it was arranged for Designer Eduardo Xol and his crew to come
to Siskin Hospital for a learning field trip at the Fitness
Center’s pool. Eduardo was helping design a custom therapy
pool for Patrick’s new house and wanted to learn more
about the benefits of Aquatic Therapy.
Margee Lee, a 20-year Siskin Hospital employee and
Physical Therapy Assistant, was ready to jump in and
share her aquatic expertise with Eduardo and his
crew. Ginger Greene, a Siskin Hospital Outpatient, who
has the same disease as Patrick, was also excited to be a
part of the filming. Ginger shared her story of how much
Aquatic Therapy has helped her throughout the years.
The weightless feeling of the water allows for an ease
of movement without causing tension or pain. The
benefits are endless and both Margee and Ginger
agreed that giving Patrick a pool will forever change his life for the better.
The staff at Siskin Hospital was honored to have been
a part of this incredible project. Although, editing will
play a role in the final episode, the learning field trip
to the pool at the Fitness Center should be featured on
ABC. It was a wonderful experience to be a part of and
the Siskin Hospital family is looking forward
to seeing Margee, Ginger, and Eduardo
splashing around on TV!!!

specifically designed for rehabilitation patients. Now,
we’ve taken those same ideas and applied them to
our newly designed private rooms, making sure that
each one is specifically designed to meet the medical
requirements of our rehabilitation patients.

roviding the best rehabilitative care has
always been our top priority. So, when our patients
asked for more space, we listened and converted
our overly large, spacious double rooms into private
spaces. Being able to rest and relax comfortably is
an important aspect of healing, and having a private
room helps to provide our patients with a muchneeded sanctuary for recovery.
Our oversized Inpatient rooms have always set
us apart, because unlike most facilities, they were
Each private room features large, spacious
accommodations that provide complete privacy
for patients and their families, private bathrooms
designed for rehabilitation patients, specialized
rehabilitation beds that lower beyond the standard
setting to help ease with transitioning in and out of
bed, and an open concept design that makes it easier
to maneuver a wheelchair.
In addition, we are also pleased to offer patients a
choice to upgrade to a mini or mini deluxe suite that
is available to Inpatients for an additional private
pay fee. The private mini and mini deluxe suites
are incredibly spacious and offer flat screen TVs, a
microwave, a mini-refrigerator, coffee service, and
a pullout bed/sofa. The beautifully designed rooms
allow us to take our top priority of providing the best
rehabilitative care to a whole new level.

honor this Mother’s Day!
What better way to thank your mom
for the wonderful care she has always
given to you, than by making a gift
in her honor? Your gift will help us
continue to provide excellent care for
others in need.
Without the generous donations of
people just like you, many of our
patients would be unable to pay for the
rehabilitation services they desperately
need. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts,
sisters, and daughters are always there
for us...helping us by offering hope and
encouragement in all we do.
Now is your opportunity to honor the
women in your life who have always been
there for you. The legacy of providing
love and caring support for others can
live on today when you donate to Siskin
Hospital. Please help us be there to
offer our patients a comforting hand,
hope for a better future, encouragement
to recover, and financial help to those
whose journey has led them to Siskin

Possibilities
2011 was an inspiring success
The Eighth Annual Possibilities: Siskin Hospital Celebrates Life
Beyond Disability Luncheon was held on February 16, 2011 at the
Chattanooga Convention Center. Over 650 people attended to hear
Bonnie St. John share her unforgettable message of hope, joy, and
perseverance, despite the obstacles.
Siskin Hospital is excited to announce that the 2011 Possibilities Luncheon raised nearly $107,000 for patient care!!! This
is the largest amount ever raised at Possibilities. Thank you to
everyone who attended the luncheon and supported Possibilities.
“I like to consider myself as a person with a disability,
because I like to redefine how other people think about
disability and what’s really possible. So much of my life,
I struggled with the concept of trying to be normal. Somewhere along the line
in my life I realized I’ll never be normal, but I can be so much more. I can be
extraordinary.”

Bonnie St. John delivered an inspiring message of “Living Your Joy” despite the obstacles (top left). She was
