2013 Report to the Community
Letter From the President & Director
Dear Friends,
We hope you will take a moment to look at our year
in review. In these pages, you will get a glimpse of
the vibrancy of our library. Guided by our core
values, each year we set out to offer the best in
library services. We do this by listening to our
community, responding to changing needs, and then
efficiently and effectively executing those services,
materials and programs.
In this report, you will see snapshots that represent our library from quiet study to crowded
after-school book clubs, from senior citizens on computers to toddlers with picture books, from
volunteers and supporters enjoying the Festival of Trees to our friendly staff helping patrons at the
front desk.
We’ve also provided you with some statistics to give you a sense of a “day in the life of our library”
spotlighting the fact that every day an average of 245 people visited our library, 470 items were
borrowed, and 231 patrons logged in or visited us virtually; and every month an average of 840
children and 311 adults attended a program event, and 15 one-on-one basic technology instruction
provided through our Book-a-Librarian program was conducted.
This year, we introduced OWL 3.0: Your Library Three Ways. This initiative was to highlight that
we want you to use your library the way it works for you. Visit us at our main location on 160 South
Street for friendly, personalized service and easy access to great materials, services and events like
our author talks or story hours; or visit us at our branch, the OWL Box, located inside Bantam
Market in Bantam for convenient access to materials; or visit us online at www.owlibrary.org for
24/7 access. Whatever way, or ways, you use your library, our goal is to ensure that it works for you
and gives you access to the materials and programs that enlighten, entertain and inform.
All of this would not be possible without you. Thank you for your support and for using your library.
We also want to take this opportunity to recognize and express our thanks for the important
contributions our good friend and fellow board member the late Jim Rindos made to the Oliver
Wolcott Library. Jim ably served as a board member for the last three years but has been a supporter
of the library since his youth. His vibrant, contagiously optimistic spirit and his excellent business
sense were tremendously helpful. Jim was a key member of our library and board team. He will be
missed by all of us.

STAFF EFFICIENCY: This year, we are in the
top 10% of all Connecticut libraries and 55%
higher than the statewide average. This is based
on circulation per full time employee.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: In the last five years,
we’ve reduced our oil usage by 12%.
Enlighten, Entertains & Inform
READER’S ADVISORY: To connect our patrons
with books, we introduced book talks with staff.
At our first book talk, Spring Into Reading, staff
presented more than 30 titles that included fiction
and non-fiction, old and new titles. Because of the
great feedback, we plan to continue to offer three
staff book talks each year.
BOOK CLUB SERVICES: We keep the community
discussing books by offering book clubs at the
library, including our highly popular after-school
and summer book clubs for grade school children,
as well as providing book club services to homebased groups. New this year, we launched book
discussion guides to enhance reading and
discussion.
AUTHOR TALKS: Our monthly author talks let
patrons listen and meet outstanding authors. This
year, authors included bestseller Ann Leary, New
York Times wine critic Eric Asimov, Pulitzer
Prize winning historian Eric Foner, The New
Yorker staff writer David Owen, former Style
Editor and Television Producer at Martha Stewart
Living Suzanne McGrath, and many more.
LIBRARY MATERIALS: The library’s collection
of more than 65,000 items include all genres of
fiction and non-fiction, bestsellers, children’s
books, audio books, e-books and e-audio books,
DVDs, music CDs, foreign films, newspapers,
magazines and museum passes.
Innovative & Dynamic Risk-Takers
BOOK-A-LIBRARIAN: Book-a-Librarian ensures
that everyone in our community is computer
literate and technologically savvy with free,
one-on-one instruction with our Adult Services
Librarian. This year, we provided 183 sessions,
or an average of 15 sessions each month.
THE OWL BOX: The OWL Box is a branch of the
library located inside the Bantam Market in
Bantam. It is a vending machine filled with books,
DVDs and audio books. More than 3,000 items
circulated from the OWL Box, or an average of
265 items each month, an increase of more than
18% from last year.
NEW SIGNATURE CARDS: Our new signature
cards have a fresh, new look. These cards are
free to residents and taxpayers of Litchfield,
Bantam, Northfield and Milton.
E-BOOKS & E-AUDIO: We provide both e-books
and e-audio downloads through OverDrive. 2,061
e-books and 2,336 e-audios circulated this year.
Welcoming, Friendly Place...Communicate & Attentively Listen
FRIENDLY, PERSONALIZED SERVICE: Our
whole library team is dedicated to offering
friendly, personalized service.
PRINT & E-NEWSLETTER: To keep you
informed, the library creates a bi-monthly
printed newsletter and a weekly e-newsletter.
QUIET SPACE: The Emslie Room offers
patrons a quiet place to read, study or work.
Free wifi access compliments this quiet
space.
MEETING SPACE: Our meeting room is
used by community groups and businesses
to hold meetings and seminars. More than
120 meetings by community groups and
businesses were held in our room this past
year.
WOWBRARY: Wowbrary is a free weekly
e-mail service alerting subscribers to the
latest additions to our collection including
live links to read additional reviews and
place holds on selected items.
BLOG: Our entertaining bi-weekly blog is a
way to learn about the collection with a
story along the way. An average of 1,162
patrons read our blog each month.
