Following the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's rousingly successful premiere of Lucas Richman's piano concerto in
2013, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where Richman was resident conductor and a frequent guest conductor, was
approached about a recording of the piano concerto; a concerto for oboe and orchestra, commissioned and premiered by
the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; and his Three Pieces for Cello and Orchestra. With world-class soloists, the famed
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Lucas Richman conducting, the recordings are brilliant and authoritative. Lucas
Richman is music director of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and was music director of the Knoxville Symphony
Orchestra for 12 years. His music has been performed by more than 200 orchestras across the United States. Pianist
Jeffrey Biegel, principal oboe of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida and Israeli-American
cellist Inbal Segev are the soloists.

All of the music presented here, beautiful in its own right, is suitable for intermediate-level flutists to play. None have
been widely recorded, so this recording offers performance models for younger students. These are lovely concert pieces
by French composers written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Flutist Leonard Garrison teaches at
the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho and is principal flute of the Walla Walla Symphony. He
has been flutist in the Chicago Symphony and Tulsa Philharmonic as well as president of the National Flute Association.
His other recordings on Albany Records include works for flute and piano by American composers and two recordings of
the Scott/Garrison Duo performing American works for clarinet and flute. His colleague at the University of Idaho, Roger
McVey is the pianist on this recording.

Composer Eric Nathan, a 2013 Rome Prize Fellow and 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, has garnered acclaim internationally
through performances at the New York Philharmonic's 2014 Biennial, Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, Aspen Music Festival,
Aldeburgh Music Festival, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, to name but a few. He was composer-inresidence at the 2013 Chelsea Music Festival and Chamber Music Campania. A graduate of Yale and Indiana University,
he received his doctorate at Cornell. He is assistant professor of music at Brown University. Nathan's music conveys a
compelling and infectious energy--virtuosity in the service of defining musical drama and character. In the seven works in
this collection--three solo and four small-ensemble pieces--there's often a thrilling hint of vicarious danger. Performed by
some of the most noted performers of contemporary music, including the Momenta Quartet, this recording serves as a
fitting introduction to this brilliant young composer's music.

Albany Records celebrates composer Joseph Fennimore's 75th anniversary with the release of this two-cd set of his 24
Romances and other select works. Born in 1940, Fennimore is known not only for his compositions, but also as an
extraordinary pianist and teacher. He is best known for his works for piano and chamber ensembles. The Romances were
not written as a set, but rather composed over a span of 30 years, from age 43 to 73, amidst a prolific, hugely creative
career. The Romances grew from ideas that periodically arose, took hold, took shape, and suited the general idea of a
Romance: a short, imaginative piano work. Also included on this 2-CD set are his Fifth Sonata for Piano; Passacalle;
Sonatinella; and Three Pieces for Piano. Jeffrey Middleton, long a champion of Fennimore's piano music, graduated from
Juilliard and received his doctorate from Yale. His career has included chamber music, vocal coaching and accompanying,
solo performances, and teaching. Middleton is on the faculty of the School of American Ballet, and was the 2010 recipient
of the Mae Wien Award for distinguished faculty service.

This recording continues the tradition of the New York Latvian Concert Choir soon after its founding in 1975 of
commissioning cantatas for their annual holiday concerts. The music presented on this CD, all new works by Latvian
composers, is written in a great variety of styles, uniting the worlds of Latvian folklore and Christianity--that of Valdis
Zilveris is written in a romantic tradition with simple, memorable melodies; while Ingmars Zemzaris has used a neobaroque style; Ilona Rupaines' is much more complicated, intertwining folkloric and Christian worlds; and Karkis Lacis
employs jazz harmonies but not jazz rhythms. This is the third recording of Latvian music for the Christmas season by
the New York Latvian Concert Choir.

Victor Herbert's three-act 1914 score (Henry Blossom's song lyrics) -- the clash between a young female composer and an
egotistical Broadway librettist based on a play by Frank Mandel, is offered in a new performance edition by Michael
Phillips. His revision resulted in a reworking of the lengthy Mandel-Blossom dialog, entailed some minor repositioning of
several musical numbers, but left Herbert's score and Blossom's actual song lyrics intact. All music is presented on this
recording with a truncated version of Phillips' snappy book. The score is charming with the solo cello prominent and the
lead soprano getting the best song, explained by Victor Herbert's own distinguished career as a cellist and his wife's
position with the Met Opera.

This fascinating release is performed by low horn virtuoso, Denise Tryon, the fourth hornist of the Philadelphia
Orchestra. As a player of fourth horn, Ms. Tryon is an expert in the lowest regions of the French Horn's range, and her

for both solo horn and horn with piano, this recording makes for a most enjoyable sonic journey in colors rarely

Rarefactions, a collection of original compositions and improvisations by highly respected, contemporary flutist Jane
Rigler, showcases her unique and moving conception of instrumental and electroacoustic music. Rigler’s extraordinary
instrumental technical skill allows her to produce distinctive sounds, which, in turn, create incredibly rich and nuanced
colors and textures—often ones that are not associated with the flute. Rigler wants the listener to hear what she hears
when she plays. In some works, she places an array of microphones along the length of a flute to capture air as it swirls
through the tube. Through instrumental and electronic manipulation in the recording studio, Rigler creates the sense of
soundwaves being opened up so the listener can hear what is inside them while in their state of rarefaction. Rigler
conveys this attention to detail to a broader formal context in her collaborations with world-renowned improvisers Janet
Feder, Shoko Nagai, and Satoshi Takeishi. Here Rigler builds compositional frames resulting from the improvisational
process to produce unexpected musical trajectories. She interacts with these moments not only as part of the ensemble
but as an insightful composer. She transforms and reorganizes many of the recorded improvisations so that normally
fleeting sonic moments surface as primary materials. In her inimitable way, Rigler creates mesmerizing acoustic and
electroacoustic works. This album, Rigler’s debut as a composer, provides a glimpse into the fascinating sonic and
collaborative world of a truly original artist. Celebrated flutist Robert Dick discusses the importance of Rigler’s music in

Longtime friends and collaborators James Moore and Andie Springer began performing as a duo in 2011 while on tour
with playwright Richard Maxwell’s Neutral Hero. This anthology comprises compositions by their friends and
colleagues, all written or adapted for the duo and their unconventional instrumentation of violin and steel-string resonator
guitar. Larry Polansky’s 10 Strings (9 Events) (2011) is part of a set of works that explores his idea of morphing, a kind of
procedure in which a “source” musical element is gradually transformed into its “target” through a series of intermediate
iterations. Paula Matthusen’s in absentia (2008) features an electronic accompaniment that gradually becomes more
harmonically complex. Over the still harmonic canvas, only marginally disrupted by the beating tones from a pair of
closely-tuned crystal glasses, guitar and violin weave a filigree of sustained tones, fragmented melodies, and feeble
harmonics. The title of this album, Gertrudes, alludes to Gertrude Stein, author of the three poems that served as an
inspiration and title to James Moore’s compositions (Suspicions, Look Like, A Wish [2014-2015]) included therein.
These pieces, each a single page in length, function as springboards for improvisation, the notation oscillating between
being fully specified and merely indicative of gesture and contour. The title of Ken Thomson’s Deafening Irrelevance
(2011) alludes to his concept of the piece as a sort of primal scream, a guttural expression of his frustrations with the
loudness and short-sightedness of the contemporary world. Lainie Fefferman’s Fiddly Tune (2012) begins with an
improvisation that gradually coalesces into a theme from an imaginary tradition, its Dorian color evocative of Celtic
idioms. Two-against-three polyrhythms (both between and within the instrumental parts) explode the surface simplicity
into kaleidoscopic metrical patterns; the same concept translates to timbre and texture in the final section, when the
players double their parts by vocalizing a monosyllabic chant. Robert Ashley’s For Andie Springer Showing the Form of a
Melody, “Standing in the Shadows,” by Robert Ashley (2010) opens with a rhythmic recitation of the entire title, a device
that brings to mind Ashley’s long-standing interest in the intrinsic musical qualities of everyday speech. Subsequently,
the piece unfolds as eight sections, each sixteen bars in length, gradually sounding out a lilting melody in 3|4,
accompanied in this recording by a bowed ostinato downbeat on guitar.
