(Army Group B)
Army Group B was formed from t h e former Army Group North on October 5, 1939. It
was placed i n t h e Vest u n t i l September 1940 when it was moved, a f t e r a s h o r t s t a y
i n Germany, t o t h e German-Soviet border a r e a i n occupied Poland. On April 1, l?/J
it w a s renamed Army Group Center. Army Group 3outh was renamed Army Group B i n
J u l y 1942. It controlled t h e armies advancing i n t h e region between Stalingrad
and Kursk, It was disbanded i n February1943 and re-formed i n May 1943 a s JKJAuffrischungsstab Rommel. In July 1943 it was reorganized a s Army Group B and was
located i n south Germany, t h e Balkans, north I t a l y , and France, It was charged with
control of anti-invasion forces along t h e Channel coast, It was commanded by
Gen. Erwin Rommel u n t i l J u l y 19&!+. Gen. Guenter von Kluge took it over f o r a s h o r t
time and from August 18, 194.4 u n t i l the c a p i t u l a t i o n it was under Field Marshal
Walter Model. It took p a r t i n operations i n France and controlled the Ardennes
counteroffensive.
