Brief Description of SDnetControl
SDnetControl is a new application to control the network connection of your Star Diagnosis system
SDnetControl has two program parts for this:
- A permanently visible status indication in the deskband
- A program window for further information, settings and configurations
1.1
Functions
Daimler AG has introduced Star Diagnosis compact³ w and Star Diagnosis compact4
and the SDconnect multiplexer to keep pace with the major advances in IT. SDnetControl is the central application for
Star Diagnosis systems and SDconnect, allowing users to use the systems' network functions without difficulty:
- Display of information on the current connection status
- Easy changeover of the connection type (e.g. when changing from operation in the workshop to mobile operation)
- Checking network and server availability
SDnetControl is also an important link between current and future applications on Star Diagnosis systems and is
therefore being implemented across multiple platforms.
The following settings can be controlled with SDnetControl:
- "Connections":
Setting the operating mode (section 4.3)
Selecting a multiplexer (section 4.4)
- "Select MUX":
- "Configuration":
Setting up Star Diagnosis systems (section 4.5)
- "Network tools": Display of the availability of application servers and network diagnosis (section 4.6)
Operation of SDnetControl is very intuitive thanks to icons and automatic mechanisms.
1.2
Target Platforms
SDnetControl is designed for all current Star Diagnosis platforms on the Windows XP operating system.
1.3
SDnetAssist Installation Wizard
All necessary configuration settings for SDnetControl can be implemented via the SDnetAssist wizard for setting up
the network. SDnetAssist is a separate application that combines and simplifies the configuration process via a
special input interfaces. It means that configuration for operation in a network can be completed in approximately 10
minutes.
Configuration through SDnetAssist/SDnetControl is only required when the system is to be operated in a network.
Operation outside of networks is possible without configuration.

SDnetControl Design
SDnetControl is an application that adapts to the Star Diagnosis system in use. This means that various functions
are shown or hidden, depending on the Star Diagnosis variant.
In all variants and also on every tab (cf. section 4.2) in SDnetControl there are “Common functions”. These are the
starting point for the manual. Subsequent to this, all further subjects (such as the configuration of Star Diagnosis
systems) are discussed.
2.1
The Components: Deskband and Program Window
SDnetControl comprises two program areas:
1. Deskband
Permanent status indication in the deskband. The deskband is integrated in the task bar of Windows XP in the lower
right corner of the screen. (cf. section 3)
2. Program window
Program window for further information, settings and configurations (see section 4). The program window is called
up by clicking the deskband.
2.2
The Icons
SDnetControl uses icons to simplify the display. These are briefly presented below and will be described in more detail
in later sections as necessary.
2.2.1
Hardware Icons
The hardware icons represent the relevant Star Diagnosis
components in the workshop's network. They differentiate
between the server, the Star Diagnosis platform and the
multiplexer.
These differ again depending on the platform and
multiplexer used.
Icon for server/Internet
Icons for Star Diagnosis
systems
Icons for multiplexers
2.2.2
Connection Icons
Connection icons serve to illustrate the type of connection
between the various hardware components.
The difference in color does not refer to the connection
status. It only serves to make differentiation easier.

Road Wireless Network (WLAN adhoc):
Workshop Wireless Network (WLAN infrastructure):
The connection icons are explained in more detail in
section 4.3.

Multiplexer Icons
The status icon for the multiplexer informs the user of the
multiplexer selected and its availability. Details for this can
be found in section 3.4.

The Deskband
As a part of SDnetControl, the deskband shows the network connection of Star Diagnosis systems and multiplexers
permanently and at all times.
3.1
Deskband Display
The deskband is integrated in the task bar of Windows XP
in the lower right corner of the screen.
Information about the hardware used, the selected
connection type and the status of the selected multiplexer
is displayed.
The color of the icon does not provide any information
about the status of the selected connection, in other
words whether it is actually functional. In order to check
this you can use the network tools (see section 4.6).
3.2
Hardware Used
The display in the deskband changes according to the
hardware used.
So for example, a multiplexer that is selected via cable is
automatically displayed as an icon and as "connected via
cable" (applies particularly when using a Part D).

The use of wireless communication networks and the use of systems in these networks must meet the
appropriate rules and regulations of your country. More information can be obtained from the relevant
authorities. Make sure you know the country-specific conditions for operation of wireless
communication networks in your market. If necessary, remove a non-approved wireless card from the
SDconnect.
Information about the system can be found in the documentation enclosed with the Star Diagnosis
delivery package and the documents provided in the INFO information system.
An additional wireless card is required for the wireless network in some markets and for certain
systems. Ask your market representative if your Star Diagnosis system is suitable for wireless
operation in your market or look in the After-Sales portal at http://aftersales.mercedes-benz.com.

automatically change in SDconnect along with changes in SDnetControl, as is intended. Be aware of the following
indications:
The icons shown in the deskband and on the SDconnect

Selecting a multiplexer
Before an application can use the multiplexer, the latter has to be selected. A distinction is made between two kinds of
selections:
1. automatic: all multiplexers are recognized automatically when connected to the Star Diagnosis system via a cable
2. manual selection: all the SDconnects known to the wireless network are shown in this list. The SDconnect desired
must be selected manually.
If the device is accessible, then the SDconnect most recently selected will automatically be used at every restart of the
application. If a different SDconnect is to be selected, the tab "Select MUX" can be opened by clicking the icon in the
right-hand side of the deskband.
In order to be able to select an SDconnect, no multiplexer
may be connected via a cable!
