Orell Füssli Children‘s Books
Cheeky and in vivid colour – for all children between 1 and 11
– here is Orell Füssli‘s new publishing programme!
It is meant to entertain, to awaken children‘s curiosity and
to be fun. The first titles introduce a scope that is to range
from board books and play-books for the very youngest
to picture books and comic strips, and to story-books and
first readers for those a little older.
There will be sequels, series and stand-alone stories, and we
would like to provide a home to local as well as international
writers and artists.
We are hoping for you to welcome our programme, and for
it to be a success with children and grown-ups alike.
You can count on our support.

Ten tiny, spooky ghosts
spent the daytime in a shed.
One didn’t hear the wake-up call,
so there were nine instead.
Come the witching hour, the ten tiny ghosts fly out together, looking for adventure. But their group
becomes small and smaller, until just one tiny ghost is left. But it will not be lonely for long – in the
end, they all meet up again.
Susanne Göhlich, born in Jena in 1972, began to illustrate her own stories while studying art
history. As well as having worked for educational publishers, she has written successful bedtime
stories, picture books and board books for several renowned children’s books’ publishers (e.g.

including 6 half-pages flaps
size 18 × 16 cm

Farmer Max wants to celebrate his birthday. He invites all his farm animals to a big party and comes
to pick them up with his tractor and trailer. First, a donkey gets into the trailer, then a cow and a
pig, three dogs, four sheep... and how many more are waiting at the next corner? The answer is
to be found behind the next flap. At last, all the guests arrive at the brightly-lit marquee where
they have an amazing party, celebrating until... yes, until a totally exhausted Farmer Max has to be
hoisted onto his tractor trailer and driven home by the donkey.

You can do sports in all kinds of places; you can get some exercise and play practically anywhere:
in the water, in the park, in the schoolyard, at the ice rink or in the football or sports stadium. The
sports and games played in the hidden object pictures are just as varied. There is a whole palette
of sports pictured, be it trampoline jumping, tug-of-war, juggling or swimming, rock-climbing,
cycling or sack-races. The pictures encourage children to take a closer look and try to find out what
is happening to Hugo, where the child in the polo-neck jumper is and what a group of children in
numbered T-shirts are up to.
Marc Locatelli, born in 1954, was a sports enthusiast even as a child. Equally early, he began to
draw, with sports scenes still his favourite subject. He is a qualified graphic designer who lives and
works in Zurich.

Peter Friedl
Ich bin doch nicht müde!
NOT TIRED AT ALL!
2016
18 pages, board book, coloured illustrations
size 17 × 17 cm
from 2 years on
world rights available
Parents with young children are familiar with the situation: The more tired a child, the bigger the
chaos. Scenes that both parents and children will instantly recognise and chuckle at.
Lea just won’t go to bed, although she is at least as tired as Ben, her dog.
They play and romp until they are ready to drop. But the nicest part always comes at the end, when
it is wonderfully cosy under the blankets, especially when Daddy reads a story and Ben is peacefully
asleep on his dog cushion. Pictures drawn with loving attention to detail and appealing characters
tie in perfectly with the real-life experience of very young children.
Peter Friedl studied art in Halle, Germany, and has been working as a freelance artist and
children’s book illustrator since 1990. He is well-known for his likeable series protagonists who
appeal to children as young as two. His endearing illustrations make it easy for children to recognise
themselves and their everyday environment, thus promoting empathy.

What does the baby elephant do at the zoo? What is the seal’s favourite toy? What animals are
there in a petting zoo?
There is more to the board book My Zoo Animals than just their favourite animals for children to
discover. There are also surprising changes to be seen. A lioness can be turned into a roaring lion
with a mane, or a pony might become a zebra.
Whether it is a police car on patrol, the fire brigade in action or a garbage truck at work: The
subjects of the pictures have been hand-picked to suit the taste of their target audience.
Here, children can discover exciting little scenes as well as turn a lorry into a fire engine or a dinghy
into a pirate ship, with the help of the cut-out stencils. In the My Vehicles board book, the settings
keep changing until the reader has landed on the moon in a rocket.

Advent, Advent, the candles light – this beautiful edition of the well-known Advent poem is

more. Lovingly illustrated scenes with a lot of details show a family and their dog during Advent

Christmas room itself.
Marion Elitez has a degree in design, studied in Krefeld, Paris and Münster and has been a

Biscuit tins emptied, honey jars licked clean, sandwiches nibbled at – by
whom? Soon, our three friends get wise to the thieving gnomes’ ways and
find out how to get rid of them. In the end, they teach the gnomes how to
prepare all the delicious things they used to steal from the bear before. So,
finally, it is not just the three friends who are happy but also their tiny, new
allies.

Three friends who stick together, no matter what. A story about friendship,
courage and inventiveness.
Three friends who are as different from each other as can be: Moe, the
good-natured bear, is fond of his pantry and long naps. Hugo, however, is
an extremely curious rabbit who tends to act more quickly than he can think.
And then there is Pete, a brilliant penguin who lives in a disused fridge at the
junk yard. When the three friends crash-land their home-made airship on the
high seas and are caught by a pirate wolf, only the most ingenious of ideas
will save them

MAMMA MIA (Series containing three volumes)
2016
32 pages, bound, coloured illustrations
size 22 × 29,3 cm
from 5 years on
world rights available
Vol. 1: No More Magic!
Mama Lila is a wonderful mother. Louise knows that. But why can’t Lila stop doing magic? She turns
Louise’s breaktime snack into a singing surprise, and the stairs at home into an escalator. Great fun for
the kids! But disagreeable for Louise.
Vol. 2: Weeping With Laughter!
A planet where crying is as pleasant an experience as laughing is in our world? It’s laughable, for crying
out loud! An amusing story, showing that both crying and laughing are part of life.
Vol. 3: Please Don’t Go!
Mama Lila wants to go to a witches’ conference. Well! Who is going to look after little Louise? Finding
a solution is surprisingly easy – and practical into the bargain!
Three books full of wonderfully eccentric stories about a mother and a daughter who are totally
different personalities, but who love each other with all their hearts.
Gardi Hutter, born in Switzerland in 1953, is a Swiss actor and author. Most importantly, though, she
is a clown comedian, on tour with her own plays, usually performing in theatres rather than circuses.
By now, she is acknowledged internationally as the doyenne of clown theatre.
Catherine Louis, born in Switzerland, studied at the Ecole d’Arts Visuels Berne et Bienne, and for
another two years with Claude Lapointe at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg.
Then she opened her own studio in the canton of Neuchâtel, where she creates illustrations, posters,
stage sets and paper dolls.

English title: The Badger and the Scaredy-Rabbit
2013
32 pages, bound, coloured illustrations
size 19 × 25 cm
from 3 years on
Rigths sold to: Denmark, China
world rights available
When a badger meets a scaredy-rabbit – what happens? Two very different personalities collide:
One is scared while the other thinks he is not. But both of them are about to learn something,
becoming friends in the process.
Little Badger is cheeky, small, brave and sometimes, he suffers from delusions of grandeur. He never
listens to his parents, he is untidy and sometimes downright naughty. In short: He does everything
one should not do. His parents and his brothers and sisters, however, are hard-working, tidy and
they keep their heads down. They are decent citizens of the forest. In short: They do everything
normal badgers should do.
In his first adventure, Little Badger runs away from home. He is roaming the forest and hanging
around the farm, where he plays »chicken Indians« and sets the rabbits free. That is how he meets
Scaredy-Rabbit. Together they tease the billy goat and escape from the farm’s big, bad dog by the
skin of their teeth.
A zippy and exciting story about being naughty and being scared.
Nicolas d’Aujourd’hui, born in Basle in 1965, did a four-year course in Fine Arts and worked as an
art teacher at a Basle grammar school for several years. Since then, he has been writing and drawing
picture books, cartoons and comics as well as designing games and running his own publishing
business, »nix-productions«. He is just as spontaneous, quick and cheeky as his characters, excelling
at live drawing performances for children and grown-ups. With him and his audience batting ideas
back and forth, impromptu stories and characters pop into vigorous being. Nicolas d’Aujourd’hui
lives in Basle with his wife and children.

2016
144 pages, bound, illustrations
size 13,8 × 21 cm
from 8 years on

Gabriel is the youngest pupil at ‘Cloud Castle’ boarding school for angels – and he does not have
an easy time of it. The principal is very strict and the short, spirited angel’s behaviour leaves a lot
to be desired.
It is hardly surprising then that Gabriel has to do some extra homework all too often. However, he
will not be deterred from his great goal; neither by strict teachers nor by extra chores like sweeping
the Milky Way or sharpening arrows for Mr Cupid: He really, really wants to become a guardian
angel!
When the Archangel Gabriel, who is getting on a bit, returns from Nazareth with a terrible cold (it
took him several attempts to make Mary believe his glad tidings), Gabriel rises to the occasion. He
is allowed to spend an afternoon on Earth, to look after Jan, a primary pupil who is actually the
Archangel’s protégé. Spurred on by the trust set in him, Gabriel rises to peak form ...
Sunil Mann, was born the son of Indian immigrants in the Bernese Oberland. He lives in Zurich. His
debut novel Fangschuss – Coup de Grâce, introducing ethnic Indian private eye Vijay Kumar, was

2016
124 pages, bound, illustrations
size 15,3 × 20,5 cm
from 6 years on
world rights available
If you keep your eyes open, are curious and use your imagination, you’ll always have interesting
stories to tell.
Sarah is a pert and inquisitive girl living in a little town by the sea with her parents. Her father runs
a fish smokehouse, her mother works in an office. Sarah is very interested in all things maritime or
to do with nature in general. She always reports everything she has seen, heard or thought up to
her friends in kindergarten.
A number of fascinating natural phenomena are explained in ten separate stories. What causes a
storm tide? Are fish really mute or can they communicate with each other, or even with humans.
Carsten Otte was born in Bonn in 1972 and studied philosophy. He has written several novels and
non-fiction books, all of them much reviewed, the latest of these being a bestseller about men in
the kitchen, published by Campus Verlag. Sarah and the Sea is his first children’s book – it is the
result of a grant from the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Künstlerhaus Eckernförde. Carsten Otte lives in
Baden-Baden with his wife and their child.
Christine Brand, born in the Ore Mountains, spent most of her time at school daydreaming,
trained as an industrial seamstress, then fled to the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee to study

anything needs tinkering, soldering or generally fixing. Results may not be exactly as intended,
but usually lead to a happy ending, anyway. Ten short, stand-alone episodes about two original

TSOZO AND THE FOREIGN WORDS

48 pages, bound, coloured illustrations
size 15,3 × 20,5cm
from 8 years on for young readers

Tsozo and his parents move from their village to another country where everything is new, especially
the language. He does not understand the foreign words, he is sad and longing for his old home.
On the phone, his grandma advises him, «Open your eyes, prick up your ears, be patient, and the
new language will come to you.»
A new language is like a wild mustang, she also says. Thanks to her, Tsozo does not give up. It takes
him a lot of patience and careful study to finally tame the new words.
In the playground, Tsozo meets three children and learns his first words. A short while later, his
new friends face a dangerous situation, and his grandma is proven right: Tsozo can make himself
understood in his new language and get help.

Ravi, the ravioli girl and Oli, the ravioli boy crash-land in old Mrs Green’s garden. With a rambunctious
group of vegetables calling the shots, it is a wild and wonderful place. Ravi and Oli marvel at the
garden’s inhabitants: There is the Rash family, three radishes who are quite agile but also rather
cheeky. Coco Cucumber, on the other hand, is a real lady, if a little slow when playing hide-andseek. Ken Kohlrabi is the undisputed leader, bossing everybody about when the need arises. But
just when everybody is having a great time playing and becoming everybody else’s friend – Slimey
Slug, voracious arch-enemy of all vegetables, turns up. Will our heroes be able to escape?

No, Ksss is not a real monster – he is small and his voice is rather filmsy. Who should be afraid of
him? Fortunately, Liz and Paul discover Ksss in their school’s gym and take care of him. Life is not
easy for Liz and Paul, either. Liz is the only girl to play football and wear dungarees. Paul, on the
other hand, has a slight lisp and is the least athletic boy in his class. When the caretaker surprises
the three friends, disaster looms – and Ksss shows everybody what he can do!

Fred hates chore days in his anthill. And this time, cleaning is the order of the day. That means a lot
of work, and Fred is allergic to work.
He’d much rather practise handstands, because BELOW IS THE NEW ABOVE!
But to avoid cleaning-up day, Fred needs to think of something. He discusses the problem with his
best friend, Greg Greenfly, who comes up with an unusual idea...
A fast and funny story about Fred, the slightly different ant. There are two new characters being
introduced in the second Fred volume: Igor, the scavenger beetle Isidore’s son and Roderick, a conceited woodlouse looking for a bride.

Fast, fun and a little rebellious , the title starts off a new series with a likeable hero
If the day will bring an unpleasant surprise, you can feel it as soon as you are getting up: If your
feelers are itching like crazy, it‘s a sure sign. And today is one of these days.
Fred, the shrewd little ant from Anthill Section Five, gets suspicious when his cousin Albertina
tells him the Head Ant wants to see him.Seeing the Head Ant always means she wants you to do
some tedious chore. Fred is way too busy for things like that. He is much more interested in the
fine art of walking backwards, for example.Today, however, any resistance seems pointless. Fred is
in a tight spot. The Head Ant wants him to guard her booty cellar. Horrible!
Fortunately, Fred‘s best friend, Greg Greenfly, has a fabulous idea how to get rid of tiresome
tasks. Isidore, an ambitious (and, above all, stupid) scavenger beetle, is just who they need ...

THE MONASTERY RAID

from 8 years on

There aren’t any magic potions, Romans or Gauls – but this new comic series about Swiss history is
every bit as thrilling, amusing and entertaining as the adventures of Asterix and Obelix.
In 1313 AD, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden are ruled by Habsburg administrators.
In Munggenstalden, a small Alpthal village, a group of rebels from Schwyz has cleared a patch
of land for cultivation and settled there – smack in the middle of an area belonging to Einsiedeln
Monastery. And that is only the beginning: Another band of settlers is soon to arrive in Alpthal,
lock, stock and barrel. The abbot of Einsiedeln does not like it one bit. The quarrel escalates, with
the monastery’s patron, Habsburg king Leopold I., muscling in ...

THE GREAT MORGARTEN BATTLE

In the second volume, things come to a head between the rebellious confederates and the Habsburgs
– with the inhabitants of Munggenstalden caught in the middle. The second ‘Munggenstalden’
volume, ‘The Great Morgarten Battle’ continues where volume 1 (‘The Monastery Raid’) left off,
depicting the Battle of Morgarten in a historically accurate way, even if the details are somewhat
exaggerated (this includes lots of knights flying through the air and a hail of spiked maces). Finally,
the people from Schwyz – who used to be mocked as ‘country yokels’ – together with their allies
from Uri and Nidwalden put the Habsburgs to flight. King Leopold is forced to sign a peacy treaty
granting the confederates their freedom.
