… Simply beautiful tHe lOVe Of tHe laND It’s time to go! SETTING OFF, ARRIVING AND SWITCHING OFF THE UCKERMARK Car registration code: UM Area: 3,o58 km2; Population density: 43 people per square km – one of the lowest of all German rural districts Cuisine: regional, simple, good and solid. Try these, for example: Schwarzsauer (goose and giblets and trimmings, cooked with dried fruit, cinnamon, cloves and allspice), Wutschnudeln (mashed potatoes with bacon and parsley). Careful, don’t get confused! Because here, potatoes are called nudln! Specialities: you’ll find sausage, cheese, fish, fruit juice and lots more besides in the lovingly managed farm shops – and bioquality too, of course. Nature: 6o per cent of the natural area is protected, including the Unteres Odertal National Park, the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reservation and the Uckermärkische Seen Natural Park. Also worth seeing is the UNESCO World Heritage Buchenwald Grumsin. – It’s part of the largest single lowland beech forest in the world. Architecture: Boitzenburg Castle, Anger- münde’s historical town centre; cobblestone churches, fortifications, Backstein Gothic Culture: the Dominican monastery in Prenzlau, Templin multicultural centre, the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt (ubs) for theatre, the Uckermark Music Festival Spectacle: Lychen raftsmen’s and raftswomen’s festival, Angermünde goose market, Templin Water Festival, El Dorado wild west town A first glance across the lake, a few steps into the open countryside, a deep breath of air. And suddenly you’ve found it: that sense of freedom, peace and quiet. You’ve reached your destination. The Uckermark lies in the north east of Brandenburg, a good hour’s drive from Berlin. It’s near enough for a spontaneous weekend trip. Far away enough to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life: go paddling across the quiet lakes, roam through the peaceful hilly countryside, and observe the rare species of birds. A genuine example of natural beauty, the Uckermark manages without glamour and make-up. It is a paradise for anyone seeking unspoilt, genuine and authentic countryside. For explorers and epicureans. You can safely switch off your mobile phone and your navigator for the next few days. Because you are bound to rediscover something incredible on your trips: to trust your own feelings. Arriving in the Uckermark also means finding yourself. tHe attRaCtiON Of tHe laKeS Ropes away! PADDLING, BATHING, DRIFTING Out on the lake, you’ll experience those very special moments: moments when time stands still. Moments in which only the present counts, and nothing matters – apart from the reflection of the sky, the soft splash of paddles in the water, and the shrill “ti-it” of the kingfisher. And what’s that over there on the bank? It looks like a beaver mound! The Uckermark is a watery realm with over 500 lakes and countless kettle holes, rivers and streams. It offers visitors endless opportunities to immerse themselves in this earthly paradise: on a canoe tour through Europe’s last untouched river flood plains in Unteres Odertal National Park. Or a raft tour through the lakes in Uckermärkische Seen Natural Park, which is home to over 1,000 plant species. Ardent cyclists prefer the hydro-bike. And when the wonderful weather gets too much for them, they dive into the nearest forest lake. Incidentally: If you feel the slightest signs of heartache when you return from your holiday, don’t worry: it’s only your longing for the lakes. Anyone who has seen them once will never stop longing to see them again. And there’s only one way of solving that problem: return. GRILLED TROUT Cut and clean a trout and place it in a marinade of lemon juice, spices, oil, salt, pepper and crushed garlic for about 3o minutes ++ Put it on the pre-heated grill and grill each side for about ten minutes ++ Rub it frequently with the marinade ++ Now check whether it is done by pricking it behind the gills or the dorsal fins ++ Have a wild meal! Uckermark’s waterways: 1 A leap into Naugartener Lake 2 A hydro-bike ride across Lychen’s lakes 3 Canoeing along the labyrinth between the Western and the Eastern Oder 4 Fishing in Sabinensee Lake Large picture: The Watery Realm of the Uckermark 4 THE ATTRACTION OF THE LAKES THE ATTRACTION OF THE LAKES 5 There are holiday destinations that hardly differ from your familiar surroundings. And there is the Uckermark: unspoiled countryside where you can shake off the burdens of daily routine in next to no time. When did you last place your trust in a map instead of your smartphone? Have you ever experienced the smell of the forest after a fresh summer shower? Or the way it feels to walk bear-footed over a carpet of moss? No? Then it’s high time you found out! Welcome to the wilderness! RAMBLING, STALKING, DISCOVERING Although people have been settling in the Uckermark since the Stone Age, the region has preserved much of its unspoiled character. Partly because it has never been densely settled. And partly because people here have always lived in harmony with nature: long before a Saxonian forest worker called Hans Carl von Carlowitz coined the term “sustainability” in the early 19th century. And it is to this harmonious cooperation that we owe the extraordinary wealth of nature here. Three National Natural Landscapes ensure that these priceless treasures will be preserved for coming generations: take the Grumsin, for example, an ancient beech forest with World Natural Heritage status in the very heart of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reservation. You’d better put on your hiking boots – because more than 1,000 kilometres of signposted hiking paths are waiting for you. And waiting ... and waiting … and waiting ... A RURAL DISTRICT – WITH THREE NATIONAL NATURAL LANDSCAPES Unteres Odertal National Park has 1,726 plant species ++ 15o of which are on the Federal Republic of Germany’s Red List of endangered species ++ A breeding and resting habitat for 15,ooo cranes ++ Uckermärkische Seen Natural Park has over 1oo km of water hiking trails ++ Over 5o freshwater lakes ++ Over 3o breeding pairs of ospreys ++ Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reservation covers approx. 65,ooo ha, making it one of the largest dense forest areas in Germany ++ More than 2,ooo oak trees, 4oo – 6oo years old ++ With 1o % taken up by moors and kettlehole mires aNimalS CROSSiNG One-hundred-per-cent unspoilt nature The Uckerkmark’s natural spaces: 1 Take a rest in Görlsdorfer Lenné Park 2 Knehdener Moor 3 Centuries-old trees in the Tiergarten Boitzenburg zoo 4 Oder meads in Unteres Odertal National Park 5 Oder-Neisse cycle path 6 Fragrant water plants Large picture: A guided tour round the Uckermärkische Seen Natural Park ANIMALS WILDWECHSEL CROSSING 7 a feaSt fOR tHe eyeS Too beautiful not to be true Have you already got yourself an Uckermark travel guidebook? Good for you. But there is one thing you need to know: You won’t find the sights that are really worth seeing in a guidebook. Because such sites are not tied to a particular place. You can’t plan to see them in advance, and they don’t follow a set choreography. They may be natural spectacles such as the dance of light and shadows on a village road lined with ancient lime trees, or the migrating cranes flying over a field in the golden October light ... CYCLING, RIDING AND RELAXING The Uckermark reveals itself in all its majesty only to those willing to abandon themselves to it completely. It is waiting to be discovered and conquered. Walking or cycling through fields and meadows on paths and cobbled roads, you will come far closer to discovering the secret of this countryside than you would from a fleeting glance through a windscreen. Try the Uckermark cycle route, the Angermünder Ice-Age tour, or the overland trail through the Mark for example. All you need is a little time and a form of transport suited to the modest speed of the Uckermark. If you take a covered wagon tour or a donkey ride lasting several days you will soon (re-)discover the joys of moving slowly – and the silence. Now and then, you will hear a voice sighing: “Isn’t it beautiful here!” HUMANS AND ANIMALS Uckermark countryside: 1 Cross-country running just outside Berkholz 2 A bicycle tour of Fürstenwerder 3 A ride with a view 4 A donkey ride at Oberuckersee 5 Encounter ostriches at eye level in Berkenlatten 6 A picnic out in the country Large picture: An idyllic country trail near Warthe SEENSUCHT Coach, charabanc and sleigh rides ++ Horseriding holidays for children and rides on the ranch for beginners and experts (Muli Rensch, Lychen) ++ A holiday on a sheep farm (Biesenbrow Sheep Farm ) ++ Guided walking tours, bicycle and canoe tours with nature and landscape guide Thomas Volpers (rund UM Natur – everything related to nature) ++ Donkey rides in the Uckermark A FEAST FOR THE EYES 9 tRaCKiNG What has happened so far ... Please be very quiet for a moment. Can you hear it too? That whisper? Those voices in the distance? The Uckermark is full of mysterious places steeped in history – places that tell a story. The 55 km long Trail of Stones between Templin and Warbende is lined with witnesses that have experienced centuries of cultural history: landscape gardens, fieldstone churches, the ruins of monasteries and mills – and it is only one of countless cycle and hiking paths. The fantastic looking Schloss Boitzenburg owned by the von Arnims, proud manor houses and impressive churches testify to bygone prosperity. A large section of the population lived in poverty, however. At one time, the Uckermark was unbelievably rich in rocks and stones – though not of the precious variety. It’s cobbled streets, megalithic chamber tombs and huge granite erratic blocks are a reminder of this. They were formed during the last Ice Age, some 15,000 years ago, when vast glaciers moved across the land, lending it its present form. As you can see, there are plenty of trails to follow. Why don’t you look and see how much holiday you have left this year: for your next journey through time to the Uckermark. Cultural centres in the Uckermark: 1 Monastery ruins in Tiergarten Boitzenburg 2 Red-brick Gothic and timber-framed structures in Angermünde 3 The exhibition at the Dominican monastery in Prenzlau 4 Templin’s historical town wall 5 Schloss Kröchlendorff 6 Gollmitz water mill 7 Görlsdorf village church Large picture: Schloss Boitzenburg 10 SEENSUCHT TRACKING 11 Uckermark Delights: 1 Gut Temmen farm shop 2, 3 Quarzsprung ceramics workshops 4 Freshly smoked fish from Lychen 5 Coffee at Gesindehaus 7 in Neu Temmen 6 Water games in Templin Large picture: An apple delicacy from the Haus Lichtenhain GOuRmetS Displaying taste The cuisine takes after the land. People in the Uckermark not only live in harmony with nature, when they are preparing typical regional meals they also rely on regional and seasonal products, as well as fresh and natural food. Many of their savoury and hearty meals apply the following formula: straightforward but not simple. Many of the country inns in the region serve excellent fish and game dishes, perfectly combining the best of two worlds: the simple and the special. Traditional recipes and modern ingredients. CONSERVING, CULTIVATING, HARVESTING Have you acquired the taste yet? If you have, why not fill your picnic basket with regional specialities from one of the fondly furnished farm shops: Uckerkaas cheese, for example, with select herbs, spices, fish and sausage from the Kerkow Estate; or apple specialities from Lichtenhain. Because this is how the Uckermark tastes: original and genuine. And when it comes to being genuine: the word has got around that the Uckermark is a veritable paradise for epicureans. Countless artists and craftsmen have settled here over the past few years. And instead of disappearing in the hectic rush of city life, they are finding peace here, and time to concentrate. And even if you stayed for only a few days or weeks, wouldn’t it do you good too? ACQUIRE A TASTE FOR THE UCKERMARK Beef steak from Kerkow Estate ++ Cheese specialities from the Bauern-Käserei Wolters, where, every morning, visitors can see how a cheese factory operates ++ Jams made by Boitzenburger Früchtezauber ++ Fresh Hemme Milk from Schmargendorf ++ The chocolate factory in Marstall Boitzenburg ++ Chocolate and sweetmeats from the Chocolaterie Wienold in Hammelspring ++ Coffee and homemade cake in the salon at the Gutshaus zu Friedenfelde ++ Wild-herb pancakes at the Grüner Baum in Ringenwalde ++ Freshly caught fish from the Fischerei Trellert in Sternhagen ++ Give them a try!! GOURMETS 13 OF RASCALS, LANDGRAVES AND COWHANDS Is there anyone who doesn’t know them: the protagonists of the book and film entitled The Heathens of Kummerow? The twenty-two land-lifeloving episodes attributed to the village of Biesenbrow (now a district of Angermünde) where Ehm Welk, the famous German journalist, author, professor and founder of adult-education centres was born. He completed a realistic socio-political study of life in the Uckermark in the early 19th century. THE VON ARNIMS IN THE UCKERMARK No other family has ever left such a powerful impression on the Uckermark as the von Arnims: an old noble family from the Mark, who were first mentioned in 12o4. For centuries, the von Arnims played a decisive part in the settlement of what is now the Uckermark. They left their stamp on almost every village: with monuments, churches, graves, castles and palaces preserving their memory. Their legacy also includes the splendid Boitzenburg Mansion, which is now used as a hotel for young people. LENNÉ IN THE UCKERMARK Peter Joseph Lenné (1789–1866), the German classicist and Prussian garden and landscape artist, designed countless parks in the Uckermark. Six of these are still open to the public today: Zützen ++ Criewen ++ Wolfshagen ++ Görlsdorf ++ Boitzenburg ++ Hohenlandin JANUARY/FEBRUARY New Year’s concerts in Prenzlau, Angermünde and Templin A whooper swan festival in Unteres Odertal National Park MARCH/APRIL The Floodplains Festival in Unteres Odertal National Park Easter markets in Boitzenburg, Templin and Berkenlatten A day of hiking at the Grosser Döllnsee Lake THE KALIT Speaking of Ehm Welk and The Heathens of Kummerow: have you ever encountered the word Kalit before? In imperial Germany, it was the name given to a woven basket in which Brandenburg agricultural workers used to carry – and preserve – their provisions for the long days out in the field. Nowadays, these handy bags, which are usually made of wood shavings, tend to be used as picnic baskets: for sandwiches and fruit – and maybe a fortifying swig, too. 14 SEENSUCHT Lychen is one of only three towns in Germany to bear the title “rafting town” – and for very good reasons: the tradition of the rafting trade dates back to the year 157o in the region of Lychen. It reached its zenith with the plan-full development of the waterways and the growing importance of transregional trade from the 17th to the mid-18th century. The rafting museum in Lychen conveys vivid impression of the hard work and skill of the raftsmen. MAI/JUNI AN UCKERMARK INVENTION The Uckermark Day of Hiking The Day of the Open Studio Have you ever heard of a Pinne? It is the term used in the Mark for drawing pins – and hence the word pinboard, too. They were invented by the master clockmaker Johann Kirsten, from Lychen, in 19o2. However, like so many other inventors of indispensable and seemingly unremarkable daily aids, it did not gain him the fame he deserved with his excellent invention. The merchant Otto Lindstedt – also from Lychen – was much cleverer. He filed a patent application for drawing pins and became a millionaire producing them.
