EOS e-news Issue # 12 August 2009 eosmusic.com.au Labels Greetings and welcome! Each month we will present new releases and reviews. ‘Music man to music man’ “Bill Duff (pictured front page of Melbourne Observer 5th Aug) has been promoting records since 1964 when he started with Festival. Prior to that as a 14-year-old he sold 78s at ‘Bob Clemens’ in Little Collins Street. The first big hit single Bill sampled to disc jockeys was Jimmy Rogers’ Someplace Green. Whilst at Festival the catalogue included legends like Johnny O’Keefe, Col Joye, Normie Rowe, Sherbet and Skyhooks. No wonder Bill has endless yarns to spin. After 19 years with Festival, and the State Manager for the company, Bill moved on to Warner Brothers where he was again a State Manager for 13 years followed by another 10 years with Sonart, who distributed Naxos in Australia. Forum These days Bill has been lured out of semi-retirement by EOS Music, who distribute the Regis, Forum and Alto Take 2 labels. The CDs in Bill Duff’s sample bag these days are the basis of the music I play on 3AW. Almost every song you have ever heard, sung, whistled or tapped your foot to, are in the catalogue. The day I wrote this Bill and I had coffee at The Mbar in Toorak Village whilst I looked over the latest releases, which included Edith Piaf, Spike Jones, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, and 27 Original Rock ’n’ Roll Hits. Now which CD do you reckon I listened to first?” Keith McGowan of the 3AW Overnighters program ************************************************************************** In 1981, David Starobin founded the Bridge label with his wife Becky. Bridge issued not only Starobin’s own recordings, but also a great many historical releases, including the Great Performances from the Library of Congress series. His performances and recordings have pioneered both a new repertoire for the instrument and a re-evaluation of the guitar’s 19th century repertoire, especially as performed on period guitars. BCD9289 $28.00 rrp Chopin: 21 Mazurkas Vassily Primakov, piano “…this is a finely crafted programme and clearly it is repertoire with which he feels the deepest empathy…this is a disc to which I shall return often.” International Record Review (June 2009) “A fascinating and original artist takes on Chopin’s deeply confessional diary. His Op.17 No.4 in A minor is worth the price of the disc alone, memorably refined in sound, colour and nuance.” Gramophone (September 2009) EOS MUSIC p | 02 4886 4336 f | 02 4886 4337 e | [email protected] ABN 81 935 978 701 EOS e-news New Releases from Alto Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin (Complete Opera) ALC2007 (2CD) Tatiana—Tamara Milashkina, Olga, her sister Tamara $25.00 rrp Sinyavskaya Larina, landowner, mother / Tatiana-Tugarinova / Filipovna their nanny Larisa Avdeeva / Chorus master / Boris Meyzherovsky / Lensky, poet, Olga's fìancé- Vladimir Atlantov / Eugene Onegin, his friend Yuri Mazurok / Major, visiting guest / Anton Dzhaparidze Major, visiting guest Anton Dzhaparidze Triquet, visitor from France / Lev Kuznetsov Gremin, prince / Yevgeny Nesterenko Zaretsky / Lensky’s second Vladimir Yaroslavtsev Choir & Orchestra Bolshoi Theatre / Gennady Cherkasov Dinu Lipatti plays Chopin - Fourteen Waltzes (complete) Barcarolle in F sharp, Op.60 Nocturne No.8 in D flat, Op.27, No.2 Mazurka in C sharp minor Op.50, No.3 ALC1056 $15.00 rrp “Lipatti’s classic performances were recorded by Walter Legge in a dry Swiss Radio studio in the last year of Lipatti’s short life, and with each LP incarnation they seem to have grown in wisdom and subtlety. Much of this music is still recognizable as part of a rich aural tradition, whilst other numbers have been dredged up straight from the 17th-century gutter.” Gramophone “Delicious entertainment. Bawdy, brave, nautical, noxious...the zest is palpable, accents and colours infectious, instrumentation and vocal antics fusing with elan” MusicWeb International EOS e-news New Releases from Regis, Forum, Alto & Griffin Dvorák: Symphonies No. 8 in G major Op.88 & No. 9 in E minor, Op.95 (“From the New World”) / Serenade for Strings in E major, Op. 22 Carnival Overture Op. 92 / Scherzo Capriccioso Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Yehudi Menuhin / Paavo Järvi Frank Sinatra: Two Classic Albums RRC2006 $25.00 (2CD) FRC6135 $15.00 rrp Come Fly with Me — Around The World / Isle Of Capri / Moonlight In Vermont / Autumn In New York / On The Road To Mandalay / Let’s Get Away From It All / April In Paris / London By Night / Brazil / Blue Hawaii / It’s Nice To Go Trav’ling (Billy May Orchestra) Only the Lonely — Angel Eyes / What’s New / Willow Weep For Me / Blues In The Night / Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry / Spring Is Here / One For My Baby (& One More For The Road) (Arr. The King engaged in, and took credit for composition himself, often “rounding off” works by professional Court musicians. These included Cornysh and van Wilder. Many of these 27 dances and courting songs are from the “Henry V111’s manuscript” collection. “It’s a celebration of the musically cosmopolitan court of England’s Henry VIII...very well sung” Classics Today Tudor Age Music — Forbury and Holbein Consorts with Trinity Baroque More music from the Tudor Age, this time concentrated more on established composers of the day in lighter mood, such as Dowland, Gibbons (his famous ‘Silver Swan’), Morley, Deering, Weelkes. Again, dances and courting songs feature. GCCD4002 $25.00 rrp “a sampling of secular music from Tudor England, the kind of things ordinary people might have heard, played, or sung...will keep me coming back.” Classics Today In Honour of Our Lady GCCD4026 Victoria: Magnificat primi toni / Gregorian Chant: Vexilla Regis; Surrexit Domi$25.00 rrp nus; Veni Creator / de Lassus: Stabat Mater / Liszt: Salve Regina / Bruckner: Tota pulchra es, (solo: Ian Honeyman); Virga Jesse / Mendelssohn: Ave Maria (solo: Neil Lunt) Andrew Wright, organ / Westminster Cathedral Choir / Stephen Cleobury, director A remarkable recording by one of our most famous choirs, here under the direction of one of England’s best known choirmasters. Hymns from Hereford Hereford Cathedral Choir / Roy Massey, director GCCD4060 $25.00 rrp There has been a choir at Hereford Cathedral since the 13th century and there was an organ in situ by the 14th century. Several influential musicians have held the post of organist: John Bull, SS Wesley, GR Sinclair and Meredith Davies. The current organist is Geraint Bowen, who has been in post since 2001. His predecessor was Dr Roy Massey, whose famous choir is heard singing a superbly crafted blend of familiar and rare hymns. “To sum up: the singing is mostly impressive and enjoyable” MusicWeb International EOS e-news New Releases (various) Tibetan Buddhism Choe Khyong Setab Pai Torbul Kagyama (The Sealed-For-Secrecy Torma Off) Kabsumpa (The Three Occasion, Tribute To Buddha By Tsongkhapa) Jigje Kyi Dagjug Chenmo (The Grand Self-Empowerment Of Yamantaka) Shartse College of Ganden Monastery, Ven Lobsang Tenzin (chant master) Recorded on location in South India BCD9015 $25.00 rrp Kecak from Bali BCD9019 $25.00 rrp Includes the first recording of a complete “Ramayana Monkey Chant” Kecak Ganda Sari, I Gusti Putu Putra (director) CD Review: Highest Rating Billboard: Music Award Winner Folksongs of Russia My curly-headed lad, In the dark wood, The Road, Hour after Hour, The Bell, Down the Volga, Tanya sweet Tanya, Evening Bells, Susitka and others SOMMCD202 $25.00 rrp The Ensemble of Soloists Moskovskaya Kapella / Gennady Dmytriak “Those of us whose acquaintance with the Russian repertory begins and ends with the ‘Song of the Volga Boatmen’ are in for a rare treat.. both chorus and soloists are outstanding” Choir & Organ Magazine Gefilte Fish — Sol Sejn — Jewish (Klezmer) Music Andrea Giani, vocal / Joe Rappaport, violin / Angeliki Koufou, accordion Roman J. Chowdhury, guitar Tobias Schwartz, contrabass W109019 $25.00 rrp Celebrations, good food and music have always gone hand in hand. Just as Gefilte Fish has various ingredients, so does Jewish music: Liturgical song, Klezmer melodies, ancient folk songs, theatre hits which have entered the folk song canon, songs from the resistance, from the ghetto, Zionist and Israeli songs. Always telling about life, joy and sorrow, tears and laughs… they are songs that somehow seem familiar to us. Fauré: Songs — Mélodies Yann Beuron, tenor / Billy Eidi, piano 1C1162 $29.00 rrp For its first incursions into the universe of Gabriel Fauré’s songs, Timpani’s La Mélodie Française collection, at present boasting fifteen titles essential for every aficionado of the genre, has chosen Yann Beuron, ‘the most stylised of our tenors’ (Diapason, July 2009). He is partnered by pianist Billy Eidi, quite recently crowned by the Académie du Disque Lyrique (‘Gerald Moore Award’, Orphée d’Or for best accompanist), who wanted to devote this disc to Fauré’s ‘Third Collection’. Pierné: Cydalise et le chèvre-pied Luxemburg PO / Metz Cathedral Choir / David Shallon, conductor 1C1174 $29.00 rrp “A rich score permeated by echoes of Ravel’s Daphnis, this first complete recording should win the work many new admirers.” BBC Music Magazine “Altogether a recommendable disc, which I shall certainly play a third time and beyond” Gramophone “Make no mistake: this recording must be counted one of the major events of the year. Don’t miss it.” ClassicsToday.com Debussy (1862-1918): La Mer — Images Orchestra Philharmonic du Luxembourg / Emmanuel Krivine 1C1165 $29.00 rrp This is hardly the first time that a disc has been devoted to them (let us recall that La Mer was recorded 80 years ago by Koussevitzky). But when the most highly-ranked conductor in France (along with Boulez) is as the head of the ‘Frenchest’ of non-French orchestras, that result is in an on-depth interpretation, brimming with vigour and showing off the particularly ‘fruity’ woodwinds to advantage. “Emmanuel Krivine is one of today’s greatest conductors and is never, under any circumstances, to be missed. The LPO are at home in these scores and their conductor finds moments of genuine rapture.” Gramophone EOS e-news New Releases from Bridge & SOMM Café Music — Piazzolla: Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (arr. Bragato/Bachmann) / Le Grand Tango (arr. M. Kutnowski) / Paul Schoenfield: Café Music Joaquin Turina: Trio No. 2 in B minor, Op. 76 Maria Bachmann / Alexis Pia Gerlach / Jon Klibonoff BCD9296 $28.00 rrp “This is not a crossover album: it puts together some of the works that live on the bridge between classical music and popular music. The pieces here are accessible, sometimes even kitschy, but always enjoyable. The over-arching theme of the disc is the integration of popular and classical music, viewed from different angles by four composers. The disc, like a hall of magic mirrors, shows three worlds, and, unless you really cannot stand one of them, it will give you real pleasure. Start playing it when you are unhappy - and I am sure that when you are through, you won’t remember your sorrows.” MusicWeb International Howard Ferguson: Piano Concerto / Gerald Finzi: ‘Eclogue’ Op. 10 Frederick Austin: Piano Concertino / Alan Rawsthorne: Piano Concerto No. 1 SOMMCD241 $26.00 rrp Mark Bebbington, piano / City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra / Howard Williams “No one matches this coupling. Bebbington brings his deep satin to music that variously recalls his good friend Gerald Finzi and a figure I had not looked to hear as an influence: Miaskovsky. A stimulating collection - not short on fascination. I am looking forward to Somm’s impending release which will include the Ireland concerto and Bax’s Concertino.” MusicWeb International Frank Bridge: Piano Quintet* / Three Noveletten / Rhapsody Trio / Lament for 2 Violins & Viola Cherry Ripe / Sir Roger de Coverley Bridge String Quartet / *Michael Dussek, piano SOMMCD087 $26.00 rrp SOMM’s highly successful series on British music continues with a disc which contains one of Frank Bridge’s most beautiful works, the Piano Quintet in D minor. The Quintet is thematically a particularly heartfelt and impassioned work, possibly reflecting Bridge’s own separation from his close confidante and future wife, Ethel Sinclair, who returned to her native Australia after graduation from the RCM in 1903. Mark Bebbington — The Piano Music of John Ireland Volume 2 SOMMCD088 The following are amongst many excellent reviews which greeted Volume 1: “...his approach to the brood$26.00 rrp ing and combative Piano Sonata is to give the harmony time enough to breathe, in order to go more intensely into its emotional life. The mystical aspects of the three Channel Island pieces collected as Decorations have seldom been more sensitively brought out...I would choose Bebbington…” BBC Music Magazine (5 stars, October 2008) “For first-timers...Bebbington’s programme provides a pretty much ideal introduction, containing two of Ireland’s most popular and durable achievements, namely Decorations and London Pieces - both given with such winning aplomb, scrupulous care and heartwarming sense of new discovery that I found myself falling in love with them all over again (the vernally fresh Chelsea Reach positively beams with joy). Roll on Vol. 2!” Gramophone (October 2008) Bach: A Musical Offering BWV 1079 / Harpsichord Concerto in D minor BWV 1059 SOMMCD077 $26.00 rrp Trio Sonata in D minor BWV 527 Lisete da Silva, Baroque flute/recorder / Hannah McLaughlan, Baroque oboe / Madeleine Easton & Marianna Szucs, Baroque violins / Emma Alter, Baroque viola / Nick Stringfellow, Baroque cello / Kate Aldridge, double bass / Nicholas Jackson, director Only the first nine bars (the opening tutti) exist of Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto No.8. As these are identical with the opening of the first Sinfonia from Cantata No.35 it has been possible for Gustav Leonhardt to reconstruct this concerto using the two instrumental Sinfonias for the outer movements, and writing a brilliant harpsichord part above Bach’s own orchestral parts. Schumann: Abegg Variations / Grieg: Four Piano Pieces Brahms: Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major / Berg: Piano Sonata (all Opus 1) Alasdair Beatson, piano SOMMCD086 $26.00 rrp “Perhaps the most telling illustration of Beatson’s powers of interpretation is that he gives the Grieg pieces real charm and poetry…But the triumph of the disc is the Brahms, an interpretation that sounds absolutely fresh from first principles…this is a deeply impressive debut disc.” International Piano (July/August 2009) “…he plays with a determined air of significance and, in the Brahms, with much energy and enthusiasm.” Gramophone (September 2009) J.S. Bach: Six Suites for Solo Cello BWV 1007 – 1012 Three Sonatas for Viola da Gamba & Harpsichord BWV 1027 – 1029 Karine Georgian, cello / Gary Cooper, harpsichord “something of a genius” The Times “music-making rarely comes as impressive as this” The Sunday Times 3 CDs for the price of 2 SOMMCD090 (3CD) $40.00 rrp EOS e-news New Releases (various) Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail Ernst Haflinger / Gottlob Frick / Herbert Handt / Rolf Tasna Teresa Stich Randall / Rosl Schwaiger Coro Sinfonica RAI di Milano / Orchestra Sinfonica RAI di Milano / Peter Maag 43085-2 (2CD) $40.00 rrp This radio recording of Die Entführung aus dem Serail was made in Bolzano in 1958 with the orchestra and chorus of the Milan RAI under the artistic direction of Peter Maag. Conductor Fabrice Bollon does a particularly fine job keeping the music pressing forward in the agitated outer movements, letting the brass section strut its stuff in those fanfare motives that foreshadow the world of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.” ClassicsToday.com Zygmunt Noskowski (1846-1909): Symphony No. 1 in A major (1875)* Morskie Oko (1875)** / Pan Zolzikiewicz overture (1888)*** National Polish Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Slawek Wroblewski*, Gabriel Chmura** and Zygmunt Rychert*** CDS1083-2 $30.00 rrp The symphony is traditional in style blending the big romantic tradition from Schumann, Brahms with a tinge of Polish folk music. The present disc had slipped into the background when the arrival of volume 2 of the symphonies and volume 1 of the string quartets reminded me that it needed to be tackled. Her partner is the fresh, versatile tenor of Joseph Kaiser… Tight, well works accompaniments…complete a little gem of an issue.” Gramophone Rodion Shchedrin (b.1932): The Sealed Angel The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge The Choir of King’s College London Geoffrey Webber / David Trendell DCD34067 $28.00 rrp “Sung with clarity and sensitivity by the two choirs, this beautiful, impressive piece easily bears comparison with works that Shchedrin admires like Rachmaninov's Vespers. The instrumental part for 'shepherd’s pipe', usually played by flute, is here taken by oboe, played affectingly by Clare Wills.” BBC Music Magazine (July 2009)
