Carnival in Rio Caterpillo! Ramba Caterpillar prepares
herself for the night of her life. She wants to shake a leg,
her hairstyle is perfect – only one thing is missing: the right
outfit! All of Ramba’s costumes are in a clothes bag. Can you
help her find the matching clothes so that she arrives at
the party in time?
MATERIAL
1 game board
21 costumes (wooden pieces)
5 green wooden pieces
1 clothes bag
21 coat hangers (wooden pieces)
• Fill the bag with all the wooden pieces; place it in the middle
of the table and the game board next to it.
• Place the 21 coat hangers onto the correct case (wardrobe)
on the game board.
HOW TO PLAY
One player says “Ramba Caterpillar!” Then, all players
simultaneously put their hands into the bag to pull out the
tailpiece. You may not look into the bag.
When you think you have found the tailpiece, pull it out of
the bag, say “Stop!” out loud and show the piece to the other
players. If it really is the tailpiece, place it on the correct
space on the game board and take a coat hanger in exchange.
If the piece you pull out is not the tailpiece, place it in front
of you on the table. Once you have done so, only the other
players may continue to search in the bag.
Be sure not to pull out a green wooden piece, since they do
not fit on any space on the game board.
It may turn out that the other players pull out wrong pieces,
too. As soon as there is only one player left with his hand in
the clothes bag, all the others may put their hand into it once
more. You continue like this until one of you has found the
tailpiece and placed in onto the game board.
Then, all the pieces that did not match are put back into the
bag. Turn the bag until each player has a new opening in front
of him. The next round then starts.
END OF THE GAME
The game is over when Ramba Caterpillar is assembled. The
player with the most coat hangers is Ramba’s best friend and
wins the game. If there are several players with the most coat
hangers, they all win together.
A NOTE FOR PARENTS OF YOUNGER CHILDREN:
If your child has difficulty pulling the matching caterpillar
pieces out of the bag, you can also play as follows:
AIM OF THE GAME
Players assemble Ramba Caterpillar’s costume piece by piece
from the coloured wooden pieces – from tail to head. The
player who finds the matching piece in the bag lays it on the
caterpillar and receives a coat hanger. When Ramba Caterpillar is
assembled, the player with the most coat hangers wins the game.
PREPARATION
Before playing this game for the first time, you should first
thoroughly observe Ramba on the game board. It is best to
take all wooden pieces and assemble the caterpillar from the
tail to the head. That way, you will see which wooden pieces
belong to Ramba and which do not.
Now, you are looking for the piece that can be laid next to
the tailpiece. When you have found it, you search for the next
matching piece, and so on.
VARIATION 1:
You use the bag only as an underlay on which to place the
caterpillar pieces. Take the green, non-matching pieces out of
the game.
The course of the game is modified in the following way:
You do not play simultaneously, but rather in turns. The player
whose turn it is chooses one of the caterpillar pieces that are
lying on the bag. If this piece fits on the correct space on the
game board, the player receives a coat hanger. If the piece
does not fit, the neighbour on his left tries to find it, and so on.
As soon as the correct piece has been found, this player’s left
neighbour starts to search the next piece.
The player with the most coat hangers wins the game.
VARIATION 2:
At first, you assemble one half of the caterpillar by placing
the first 10 wooden pieces on the game board. Put the wooden
pieces for the other half of the caterpillar into the bag. Now
players look for the missing pieces and assemble the caterpillar
piece by piece in accordance with the rules of the original
game.
This variation is suitable mainly for a small group of younger
children. It does not take long and introduces children step by
step to the rules of the original game.
VARIATIONS
• In following games, you can assemble Ramba Caterpillar
the other way round – from the head to the tail.
• If you are already advanced caterpillar puzzlers, you can try
a more difficult variation. Put the game board back into the
box and try to assemble Ramba Caterpillar correctly without
using the original.
• You can also agree that everybody who pulls out a green
wooden piece has to put one of the coat hangers that he has
already collected back on the game board.
• Naturally, you may also play the
game in twos. At the beginning,
one team searches for
the tailpiece, the other
team for the headpiece.
Then the teams
assemble the
caterpillar starting
from both directions.
The team with the
most coat hangers wins
the game.
