Ol’ Blue Eyes at The Stage! Mr. Tom Stawarz performs a fabulous tribute to the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra! Tommy has been a Metro Detroiter since 1955. His appreciation of Frank Sinatra and Big Band music, particularly The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, stems from his many years as an accomplished drummer. He discovered his vocal ability singing a variety of artists at karaoke venues in the Detroit area. As other patrons would exclaim “Frank’s here!” he decided to focus his talents on Frank Sinatra. Although he doesn’t bill himself as a look-alike, the voice is unmistakably Frank. When Tommy appears on stage, in his signature tuxedo, everyone has a good time. His business card says it all, “The Good Times Are Back”. For his appearance at The Stage, Tommy is paired with Dave “Kooj” Kugat on saxophone. Dave began his musical career in 1982 working in various professional bands performing oldies, rock and roll, Top 40 and other music styles. In 2006, Dave began his own tribute career as “Boots Randolph” which allowed him to show off his saxophone skills. He and his wife have created the tribute company, Michigan Tributes, featuring a variety of tribute acts. { www.salutetothesuperstars.com } { www.saxappealentertainment.com } bronK brotherS ▼ S u n d ay ▼ June 27 ▼ 6:30Pm The Bronk Bros, fronted by the brother duo of Heath and Brian Bronk, began their music journey in 1997. They best describe their show as a “Rockin’ Hillbilly Extravaganza”—an out of control, pedalto-the-metal, in-your-face musical journey. The duo uses a mixture of classic country, new country, and classic rock to create their own original music and sound. The Bronk Bros have opened shows for new country artists like Phil Vassar, Dierks Bentley, and Chris Cagle as well as veteran hit makers like Colin Raye, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd, Joe Diffie, and the legendary Oak Ridge Boys. In May, 2008, the Bronk Bros high-energy show culminated in an opening slot for LeAnn Rimes and the legendary Kenny Chesney at a sold-out Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. The brothers are backed on stage by a rhythm section that has played in bands together for six years: bassist Woody T. Bridges, drummer John “Dutch” Fulling, and most recent addition lead guitarist T-Rex Bell. { www.thebronkbros.com } { www.myspace.com/thebronkbros } o tS e g o J a z z ▼ S u n d ay ▼ J u ly 1 8 ▼ 6:30Pm Otsego Jazz Ensemble is an 18-piece swing band from Otsego, Michigan. They’ve been performing for concerts, fund raisers, and celebrations of all sorts in Southwest Michigan since 1986, celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2006! Popular musical entertainment among the Band Festival circuit, this band has performed in Western Michigan University’s Big Band Festival, Allegan Jazz Festival, and the annual “The Battle of the Big Bands”. The first event debuted at the Kalamazoo Radisson Hotel on March 9, 2002. AND... they did it again in May 2007 at WMU’s Bernhard Center. Dr. Barry Ross, formerly the Kalamazoo Symphony’s Concertmaster, was their guest soloist, performing “Summertime,” “Love is Here to Stay,” and his signature “Orange Blossom Special.” More recently, the OJE participated in Kalamazoo’s Fete de la Musique in 2008. { http://www.oje.nu } w w w . k i n d l e b e rw gw we .rk i.nod rl e gb e r g e r . o r g 5 ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ th e 33rd Street band ▼ S u n d ay ▼ J u ly 2 5 ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ 6:30Pm The 33rd Street Band, LLC, is a diverse group of seasoned musicians who share a love of the timeless music of the great horn bands. Each member brings his unique background to the music to make a unified wall of sound. The band’s founder, Steve VerMeulen, envisioned a big showband with a “killer horn section”. In early 2003 the band came together in the basement of Steve’s house and started playing the music of Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Ides of March, Lighthouse, and The Blues Brothers. The band continues to expand its musical selections to include tunes from Van Morrison, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Buckinghams, Joe Cocker, Tower of Power, Average White Band, Santana, The Hollies, many Motown hits and blues tunes and much more. The band performs at many festivals, private parties, corporate events, conventions, fundraisers, city concerts, and night clubs throughout the Midwest region. { www.33rdstreetband.com } z ion lion ▼ S u n d ay ▼ auguSt 1 ▼ 6:30Pm Zion Lion is a combination of several bands from the Kalamazoo area that crossed each others path along the way and decided to form what we believe to be the right mix of reggae, African zoukus, mucosa, Afro- Latin, calypso, and soca influences. Some of the members have had the honor of opening and sharing the stage with local, national and international reggae artists such as Freddie McGreggor, Pato Batun, Winston Jarrett, Culture, Beenie Man, Lucky Dube, and Mikey Dread. These musicians have played in small clubs to large cultural festivals including Harmony Festival, Kalamazoo Island Festival, Kalamazoo Black Arts Festival, Grand Rapids Caribbean Festival, Muskegon Summer Festival, Louisville Reggae Festival and Rock Island Caribbean Festival to name a few. The band members are, founding member Preston Moore (drums), Myra Atkinson, (steel pan and lead vocals), Dennis McCurrine (bass), Preston Kizer-Moore (keyboard, vocal), Antonio Santos (guitar), Assane Dia (djembe’, vocal). Members of this choral group hail from the Grand Rapids, MI area. They have performed in a variety of venues including the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, Frederick Meijer Gardens, The VanAndel Arena, National Guard Conventions, the State Legislature in Lansing, Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts, and numerous sporting events such as Whitecaps baseball and MSU Spartan basketball games. Joel Mabus and Ray Kamalay have held forth on the Michigan scene for many years. They’ve traveled to Canada and Europe to play some of the most prestigious festivals, including Edinburgh, Vancouver and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. The Village Voice said, “...I thought I’d gone to Heaven when Ray Kamalay and Joel Mabus, a guitar duo from Lansing, Michigan, rode high, hard and handsome, dueling their swing guitars.” Now they are joined by two talented fellows who have gathered kudos of their own. Dave Mosher started with The Deadbeat Society, playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle and a fine singer as well. He worked on recording projects with such notables as the Raisinpickers and Kitty Donohoe, and was named “Country Instrumentalist of the Year” at the 2007 Detroit Music Awards. Dave Rosin brings up the bottom on bass. In the early years Dave studied with some of the very best, including Peter Dominguez and Rodney Whitaker. Dave has performed and recorded with many great artists, including Branford Marsalis, Wycliff Gordon and Barry Harris. These four talents are The String Doctors, who bring a new kind of country swing, for your dancing and listening pleasure! { www.raykamalay.com } o u t o F F av o r b o y S ▼ S u n d ay ▼ auguSt 22 ▼ 6:30Pm Formed in August 2003, the Out of Favor Boys have quickly become known as one of Kalamazoo’s most entertaining bands. Shortly after coming together, the sextet quickly found success, winning the KVBA Blues Competition in November, earning the right to go to Memphis, Tennessee to compete in the 2004 International Blues Contest. Since then, the Out of Favor Boys have been steadily increasing their already diverse repertoire of Blues, Funk, and Soul, playing out regularly and taking over large stages at festivals throughout Southwest Michigan. Band members include Mike Porter, Tim Brouhard, Tony Sproul, Joel Krauss, and Dan Ouellette. Featuring the brilliance of a Hammond C3 organ and blazing saxophone lines, the six-piece band brings incredible energy wherever they play. Their high-energy sets not only feature their own original songs, but also covers from Contemporary acts like Tommy Castro and Tab Benoit and Traditional favorites like Albert Collins and BB King. The Out of Favor Boys can put on a show enjoyed by both Traditional and Contemporary Blues lovers. { www.outoffavorboys.com } Shout ▼ S u n d ay ▼ auguSt 29 ▼ 6:30Pm Making their fourth appearance at The Stage at Kindleberger…”SHOUT!”. Since its inception in February of 1996, the band has made a quick and decisive rise to fame. Many attribute the band’s popularity to its polished vocals, attention to detail in both performance and persona, and the evident chemistry between its members. Whatever the cause, “SHOUT”’s celebrity shows no sign of slowing down. And you know that can’t be bad. Sought out for its memorable performances, “SHOUT!” has appeared at several Detroit radio station events. The group has even opened for well-known bands like Jefferson Starship, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and even Mitch Ryder. “SHOUT”’s triumph at the Beatlefest Battle of the Beatle Bands in Chicago two years in a row provides testament to the group’s stimulating reproduction of the famed British rock group. A recent tour of Wisconsin had Beatle lovers dancing in the aisles at every venue they played!. “Shout!” Band Members: Greg Gersabeck (John Lennon), Jim Wilcox (George Harrison), John Manier (Paul McCartney), and Kevin Kogut (Ringo Starr). { www.shouttribute.com } w w w . k i n d l e b e rw gw we .rk i.nod rl e gb e r g e r . o r g 7 ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ f A M i Ly M u s i C A L Music by Lyrics by Book by Co-Conceived By Based on the Works of ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ Stephen Flaherty Lynn Ahrens Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, Eric Idle Dr. Seuss ProduCtion team Synopsis The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Cinderella’s kind and gentle nature, despite her surroundings, makes her a favorite with the three feisty mice who have also taken up residence in the house. Meanwhile, in another part of the kingdom, a somewhat childlike King and his Queen are zealous in their pursuit of grandchildren. A ball is the thing wherein they’ll capture a daughterin-law and make a grandfather of the King. Rest assured, they will get no help from their son, who is more interested in traveling than finding a wife. That’s years of midnight fire calls, months of training exercises and all of the attendant administrative duties. Tim has answered the call of his community faithfully for all these years, while working full time at one of the busiest jobs around: Kalamazoo Township Chief of Police. All events are FREE, a concert you don’t want to miss, it’s going to be off the hinges! Lost Cause is back for a 2nd year to The Stage! This hometown rock group features Parchment High School students Alex Gibson, guitarist and lead vocals, Evan Dexter on drums, & Doug Jury, bass guitarist, playing original songs! Their music spans the rock genre, from songs with a punk feel to alternative rock and edgy contemporary pop. Lost Cause began with a school talent show in ‘08 and they haven’t looked back, playing a variety of music along the way-including covers of The Animals, Fall Out Boy, Sum 41, The White Stripes, and Franz Ferdinand. Their youthful energy has also been directed into a number of original compositions. You can look forward to some good music, and a good time! w w w . k i n d l ew b ew r gwe r. .ko ir n g ▼ ▼ ▼ Please Promise. In February of 2008, Please Promise hit the music scene harder and with more energy than anyone expected from this young local band hailing from Kalamazoo, MI. From their love of playing music, writing music, and going to shows, the boys pull from influences such as Relient K, Four Year Strong, New Found Glory, and Dashboard Confessional. Please Promise constantly strives for musical perfection, and always delivers an emotional and energy driven live show. Please Promise features Josh Pruis (drums and effects), Jeremy Pruis (bass guitar and vocals), and AJ Pruis (guitar and lead vocals). The three brothers find their inspiration for their music from the people they meet, the people they love, and the peace, hope, and love they find through Jesus Christ. Please Promise released their debut album, “Run.Run.” in Spring 2009. { www.myspace.com/pleasepromise } { www.facebook.com/pleasepromise } { www.facebook.com/lostcause } 14 ▼ 12Pm Saturday, July 10, 11am-3pm 11am ▼ dleberger.org ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ fEstivAL COnCErts DUNKTANK This group of local music veterans began to take shape three years ago when Mike Hallam, aka Ca$h (Lead Vocals, Acoustic guitar), returned to Kalamazoo from Arizona, where he hooked up with friends Jamie Dennison (Bass, backing vocals) and Rob Seth (Lead guitar), with thoughts of forming a band. They went to work writing tracks in Seth’s basement studio dubbed “The Seth Lab”. The band considers their style of music as “melodic, groovy hard rock”, Denison described. “We like it to be heavy enough for the guys and groovy enough for the girls”. He explains exactly where DUNKTANK falls in the range of rock music – somewhere between the Goo Goo Dolls and a Swedish death-metal group. The group recently welcomed its newest member, Adam Harrington, drummer extraordinaire. Dunktank released its first CD, self-titled DUNKTANK, in 2009. 1Pm ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ Kal ama zoo ConCert ban d Monday, July 12 at 8PM As the traditional closing musical performance of the Kindleberger Summer Festival, we welcome the Kalamazoo Concert Band for the 2010 season! The KCB is comprised of over 100 adults from the southwestern Michigan area who will provide a lively mix of concert and symphonic music! Join us for a relaxing evening in beautiful Kindleberger Park, bring your lawn chair or blanket, picnic dinners highly recommended! { www.kalamazoosymphony.com } In Case of Rain: Haven Church, 5350 Sprinkle Road { www.myspace.com/DUNKTANKBAND } We Know Jackson returns to The Stage for an encore! With fast fingers and a velvet voice is Chris Janowiak on keyboards and lead vocals. Providing the low-end foundation on the electric bass is Isaac Hansen. Layin’ down the beats behind the drum kit is Hayes Greer. Both Isaac and Hayes add a sound unmatched by any other group with their clever backing vocals. Chris and Isaac formed WKJ in January 2007 and followed with the addition of Hayes in 2010. Although classified as a pop/rock band, the influences heard in We Know Jackson’s music range from Stevie Wonder to Phish, Miles Davis to Hanson, Jon McLaughlin to Jason Mraz, and everything in between. Due to this eclectic blend of influences, there is always a fresh and exciting spontaneity to their music. You may be asking yourself, “who’s Jackson?”. Come experience a WKJ show and you and your friends will be able to say, “We Know Jackson!” 2Pm { www.myspace.com/weknowjackson! } w w w . k i n d l e b e rw gw we .rk i.nod rl e gb e r g e r . o r g 15 ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ 2010 MEMbEr dOnOrs We thank our many member donors for their invaluable support of the Kindleberger Arts summer entertainment programs!
