Introduction
How it works

Benefits of
product giving
15
We work every day to improve our service for
charities and the people they support.
Our donors
17
Our purpose
19
At our core is the determination to
continually improve our service to
help the growing numbers of charities
and their beneficiaries who need the
products we provide.
In Kind Direct measures our impact
by visiting charities, carrying out
telephone research and requesting
feedback. We survey our charity
partners annually asking them to tell
us the difference receiving products
from us makes to their organisations
and service users.
Perhaps the most striking theme
to emerge from this year’s impact
research is the increasing need for
every day products. Almost 80%
of the 1,024 charities responding
reported that they are providing
essential support to people
struggling to afford necessities.
Toothpaste, razors, and basic
household goods are examples
of products given to people who
simply cannot afford them.
Charities continue to operate in
a volatile, pressurised funding
environment. Many tell us In Kind
Direct’s vital support is the backbone
to their service. 64% said we keep
their charities going. Many would not
have been able to offer the same
level of support, without the savings
they have made from using In Kind
Direct. Saving money on cleaning
supplies for example, can pay for
additional holiday scheme places;
pay for another carer, or go towards
presents and treats for people who
would otherwise go without.
My Board and I are most grateful
and wish to thank everyone who
helps In Kind Direct. We remain
committed to supporting as many
charities as possible to have access
to the products needed for delivering
their work and improving their
communities, helping millions
of people every year.
Robin Boles, LVO
CEO
Why we’re here
Shampoo, toothbrushes, washing powder, cookware, crockery, clothing
and nappies are just a few of the essential items which charities need to
deliver their services and support their beneficiaries.
At the same time, many companies have these
essential goods in surplus, either because they
are slow moving, end of lines or have small cosmetic
defects. This is where In Kind Direct comes in. We
take donations of surplus products from many of
the UK’s leading manufacturers and retailers and
redistribute them to UK charities and voluntary
organisations working at home and abroad.
It’s a simple solution which enables companies to achieve
their environmental and community responsibility targets
whilst helping charities to save money, enhance their
services and support their beneficiaries. Above all, In
Kind Direct ensures that high quality, essential goods get
to the people who need them most; delivering the best to
people who deserve the best.
“Sometimes clients come to us in an emergency
situation with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
Mick came to us from social services. He has dementia
and was a street sleeper. Until his financial issues were
sorted out he had nothing - no clothes, no toiletries!
Thanks to In Kind Direct we were able to give him an
emergency pack. Thank you from Mick and our ladies
who look forward to the pamper day when they have
their hair or nails done; a relief from the day in day out
frustration of being confined within the same
few rooms.”

All the small things
Whether it’s a pack of toiletries to make someone feel cared for, or a cup
of tea to encourage people to open up, we provide charities with the
products they need to make a big difference to the people they support.
And with 81% reporting an increase in demand over the
past year and 71% reporting flat or reduced income,
the pressure on charities has never been greater. Every
pound saved on everyday products can be invested
in core services or new projects which in turn helps
charities continue to deliver their services.
This report details In Kind Direct’s impact over the last
year, both on charities themselves, as well as their
capacity to support their beneficiaries.
“Tea bags enable us to offer free cups of tea to our
jobseekers attending jobs club and people who attend
our ‘Stitch and Chatter’ social group. These are mostly
isolated people. It’s a small thing but it gives a warm
welcome and a lot can be said over a cup of tea!”
Julie Helsby Harleston Information Plus, Norfolk

The results from the questionnaire presented in this report sit alongside In Kind Direct’s on-going impact measurement activities which include visits, telephone interviews,
and questionnaires which organisations complete when they renew their registrations. The questionnaire was carried out online for three weeks in January and February
2016 and took around 10 minutes to complete. As an incentive to complete it, respondents were given the chance to win an iPad. 4,825 charities registered with In Kind
Direct were invited to respond and 1,024 responses were received, which is a 21% response rate, up from 810 responses and a 13% response rate the previous year.

Helping people in crisis
With times continuing to be tough for the worst off in society, many
people are struggling to afford the essential items they need to keep
themselves, and their families, warm and clean.
“We often see the relief on parents’
faces when you give them some
soap powder, baby wipes or
toiletries. This just means they
will have that extra bit of money
for food and essentials.”
Janet Walton
Winlaton Centre, Gateshead
78% of charities responding to
our survey reported that they
used In Kind Direct goods to
provide essential support to
people struggling to afford
basic supplies, and 73% said
using In Kind Direct helped their
organisation to alleviate poverty.
Without In Kind Direct we couldn’t
offer this service to so many. The
washing powder and shower gels
saves us a huge amount on our
limited budget and lets us extend the
service to so many more of our clients.
Such a small thing can make such
a huge difference to someone’s life.”
CHARITY STORY
Barons Court Project
Tony has been coming to Barons
Court for five years. “Life was a
struggle for me with my illness, says
Tony. “I’d be sitting at home all day
and didn’t really have any contact
with people. This place is like my
second home now. I do still have
problems but I force myself to get
out of the house and I’m always
glad that I’ve made the effort to
come here. I also volunteer and I’m
a service user rep. I love gardening
and meeting new people. It’s good
to have structure to the day and I’d
really struggle without this place.”
The Barons Court Project is a drop
in centre, as well as a lifeline, for
people who are vulnerable through
mental illness, homelessness
or both. The overarching aim at
Barons Court is for people to leave
in a better state than they arrived,
whether that’s physically, emotionally
or mentally and no matter how small
the improvement.
Many charities provide
essential goods to people
who can’t afford them

“Our laundry and showers are
always on the go” says Michael,
Project Manager at Barons Court.
“We found that if our clients can
have access to a shower and are
able to wash their clothes, it has a
marked effect on their self-esteem.

Improving health
and wellbeing
Easy access to basic personal hygiene products contributes to better
physical and mental health, a key factor to social and professional integration.
We sometimes take keeping clean for granted, but that’s only if you
can afford soap in the first place. With personal hygiene comes wellbeing and confidence, better social and professional integration,
improved physical and mental health. Thanks to its generous donors,
In Kind Direct provides charities access to a wide range of high quality
personal care products to empower people to change their lives.
And it works: 80% of charities said that using In Kind Direct
contributed to improved health and hygiene amongst beneficiaries
and over 1 in 2 said that having access to goods from In Kind Direct
reduced isolation.
“Many of our members come from
deprived homes where even small
“luxuries” like deodorant are in
short supply. We keep our shower
rooms stocked with these items for
everyone to use, including some
make up and beauty items.”
Linda Llewellyn,
St Andrews Club, London
CHARITY STORY
Africa Advocacy Foundation
The Africa Advocacy Foundation works with people, mainly from black and
minority ethnic communities, to tackle issues around sexual and reproductive
health, female genital mutilation, mental health and violence against women.
From losing a job due to the health impacts of HIV or AIDS, to living with
violence or female genital mutilation, AAF exists to support and empower
people to improve their situations. The goods which In Kind Direct provides
helps to support this vital work.
Denis Onyango, Head of Programmes at AAF says “In Kind Direct means we
can provide a toothbrush, some washing powder, shower gel and other basic
household items to our service users. Being HIV positive can make people
more prone to gum disease and infections so the electric toothbrush heads
we receive from In Kind Direct are vital. We couldn’t afford to buy these
things, so without In Kind Direct, we would just go without.”

Improving confidence
and self-esteem
Through small gifts and treats, charities can offer relief to victims of neglect,
abuse or general indifference – and make them feel a little bit special.
70% of charities responding
to this year’s survey said that
ordering goods from In Kind
Direct improved the confidence
and self-esteem of beneficiaries.
CHARITY STORY
Post Pals, Children’s Support
Post Pals is a charity dedicated to
making seriously ill children and
their siblings smile by sending
cards, letters, little gifts, support and
friendship. The letters and gifts not
only make children smile but build
their self-confidence, make them feel
special and loved, distract them from
painful treatments and restore their
faith in people.
“It’s not just the child who deserves
a reward. It’s also important to
offer a bit of escapism to the family
who go through it all with the child.
In Kind Direct makes a world of
difference to small charities like us.
Without you, we would not be able
to offer gifts to very sick children
providing them with a form of
escapism from their terrible ordeal.”
Vicki George, founder of the charity
says “We use In Kind Direct to make
up ‘pamper boxes’ for mothers of
hospital-bound children. When the
child returns from hospital there is a
‘mega box of surprises’ waiting for
child, sibling and parent.”

Help charities save
and do more
In times of budget cuts, reduced funding
and increased demand, every pound saved
by a charity matters. The greater use a charity
makes of In Kind Direct’s service the higher
the savings made.
In 2015 the estimated average saving by In Kind Direct charity partners
was £4,400 per year, whilst the 20 charities using our service most
saved an average of £39,000 per year.
“There have been many activities and events made possible only because of
goods supplied by In Kind Direct. Our project has definitely been lengthened
because of the money we have saved, and we have been able to stretch
our charitable funds further and reach even more older, socially isolated
community members. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for such
a wonderful, well run and valuable service.”
Gail Naylor, Royston & Carlton Community Partnership, Barnsley

SSAFA Forces Help - St Vincent’s Care Home
St. Vincent’s is a residential care home for armed forces veterans. A variety
of services are offered including personal care, catering, dementia care and
a wide range of entertainment and activities.
Sharon Atter, manager at St Vincent’s says “In Kind Direct is helping to keep
St. Vincent’s running. It has saved us an absolute fortune and it means we
can extend what we were doing before. You have made such a difference
to our service. To give one example, Jim, like many of our residents, has
a very small personal budget. He was interested in an electric razor I had
mentioned was available through In Kind Direct and confided that he’d only
grown a beard due to the high cost of shaving.”
87 %
of charities said In Kind Direct
enabled them to
source goods that they
would never otherwise
be able to afford
65%
said that using In Kind Direct

different activities
64
%
said that In Kind Direct had
helped them keep going
“We were able to allocate some of our welfare budget to order a razor for
Jim and he was so thrilled. He went upstairs with a full beard and came
down clean shaven, feeling ‘ten years younger’. We wouldn’t have been
able to make that possible for Jim without In Kind Direct.”
