Think of it as a vertical optical bench
The research microscopist who uses the new Nikon Apophot has a very steady job indeed. Every part of this superb
new instrument is designed for rock-solid, vibration-free performance with great convenience.
The massive base and vertical column hold dual light sources and their optics in precise alignment. You can
equip Apophot with tungsten, high pressure mercury arc, xenon arc, quartz halogen and/or CSI and use reflected
and transmitted light simultaneously when you need to. Zoom-Koehler systems for both diascopic and episcopic
illumination have pancratic collectors which automatically adjust the image of the light source to the numerical
aperture of the objective in use.
The objective turret can be fitted with an optional 1x, 1.25x and 1 .Bx magnification changer. A focusable
Bertrand lens is standard equipment with the Apophot.
The built-in trinocular eyepiece tube permits simultaneous observation and photography. The vertical photo
tube is coupled to the interpupillary adjustment to provide automatic tube length compensation. The standard stage
measures 76x25mm and has coaxial controls on both sides. The condensers are quickly and securely positioned
on the stage with centerable dovetail sliders.
As you might expect, the Apophot accepts a full range of Nikon accessories; phase contrast, interference phase,
differential interference, polarizing, fluorescence and others. If you'd like more information on the new Nikon Apophot,
write for a free brochure, It's the easiest research you'll ever have to do.

SMA12/Jr.
The SMA 12/Jr. represents a new member of the family of
Sequential Multiple Analyzer Systems. It has been especially
designed to make blood profiling available to and economical
for the smaller hospital and to physicians practicing in groups.
By simultaneously performing 12 biochemical tests at the
rate of 30 samples per hour, the SMA 12/Jr. makes available
a program which previously was only possible with
Technicon's SMA 12/60 System, the leading automated
instrument in the larger clinical laboratory.

Blood profiling, in addition to the revolution it has brought
about in medicine by revealing unsuspected illnesses, has
shown that it is more economical to run a battery of tests
rather than just the two or three most urgently indicated.
The SMA 12/Jr. is available on a rental basis at rates structured
in favor of laboratories performing as little as 10 profiles per day.

The case
for the
SMA 12/Jr.
SMA" 12/Jr.
Here are a few of the reasons why the SMA 12/Jr.,
the newest of the Sequential Multiple Analysis
AutoAnalyzer Systems, is the perfect instrument
for the small laboratory
• For the first time, with its use, the advantages of
modern profiling techniques can be employed by
those laboratories that do fewer than 50,000 tests
per year. Community profiles can be made available,
unsuspected illnesses can be revealed, and all 12 tests
can be performed at a lower cost than that required for
one or two manual tests.
• Procedures can be standardized in the laboratory.
With limited personnel, standardization means that the
flow of work is speeded up. Every sample gets the
same 12 tests, obviating the confusion that comes with
doing one or two tests of one kind and then switching
to entirely different chemistries. Standardized results
are valuable, too, in that they can be compared to
work that is being done in other laboratories all over
the world.
• More efficient than manual procedures, the
SMA 12/Jr. requires only one technologist to operate it.
The System runs at 30 samples per hour, resulting in
more than a minute of "flat time" at steady state. The
technologist, therefore, has the convenience of
checking each channel visually on the graph, but he
does not have to stand guard over it.
• The Serum Chemistry Graph also does away with
any further transcribing of the test results. The
technologist simply tears off the graph from the
recorder and hands it to the requesting physician.
• The Serum Chemistry Graph shows the normal
ranges for each parameter as shaded areas. Since this
makes the degree of abnormality immediately
apparent, the physician does not have to remember
normal values, nor does he have to take the time to
look them up. The graph can also be photocopied
and placed in the patient's file as a part of his
permanent record.
• All components needed for each chemistry are
included in the plug-in analytical cartridges, including
mixing coils, dialyzer (if needed), heating units, and all
connections. Service on these units is easy for even
the inexperienced technologist. If it is necessary to
service any analytical channel it is a simple matter to
replace the individual cartridge rather than shut down
the entire system.

Selective
The Hycel Mark X will perform 400 tests an hour, selectively and with complete
automation.
The Mark X operator has the option of programming one or any combination
of 10 tests for each specimen — from PBI's to enzymes. If a test is not requested, it need not be
programmed, resulting in considerable savings in reagent consumption and sample volume.
The laboratory is not required to run a profile series on every specimen.
"Stat" samples may be substituted and programmed up to 30 seconds before
aspiration— readout is presented 30 minutes later directly in concentration units.
Mark is discrete. Each test is treated as a separate entity within its o w n
reaction tube. There is n o sample carry-over between reaction tubes and
no cross-contamination between specimens. Pre-screening of
samples is not required.

Comments of George F. Stevenson,
Commissioner,
CCE: The S-R survey
to w h i c h Dr. Couch refers yielded a
response from about 600 subscribers.
This group reported some interesting
reader s t a t i s t i c s . . . in 1969 their Reports were shared w i t h 1700 pathologists, 50 pathology-residents, 600
Ph.D. laboratory scientists, 6000 medical technologists, 100 medical technology students, and 4000 laboratory
technicians and assistants.
Considering that approximately 50
percent of the program subscribers
responded, the total S-R "exposure"
might well be projected at double
these figures. Incidentally, the survey
reflected a near unanimous opinion
that the publication should continue
essentially unchanged.
The Commissioner echos the editor's plea for frequent mail bag contributions from all our old friends, as
well as our many new subscribers.
Let's all resolve in 1970 to enjoy the
dual Reader-Contributor S-R role and
share our day-to-day laboratory experiences, problems and solutions.
