Moon Harbour is turning five. Starting out in the early
summer of 2000 as an address for classic deep house
in Leipzig / Germany, Moon Harbour has now – half a
decade, more than 20 vinyl and four CD releases later –
become a reliable address for minimal and electronic
club records.
Moon Harbour wird fünf. Was im Frühsommer 2000 als
Adresse für klassischen Deep House aus Leipzig an den
Start ging, ist heute – ein halbes Jahrzehnt, über 20 Vinylund vier CD-Veröffentlichungen später – zu einer
sicheren Adresse für funktionierende Clubplatten
herangereift.
Certainly, the previous five years offer enough stories
worth re-telling. Be it the first Moon Harbour releases by
Gamat 3000 (“Radio Moon”, MHR 001) and Marlow
(“Trust in Me”, MHR 002), the great tracks of our
Swedish friends Håkan Lidbo and John Dahlbäck, the
unforgotten guest-remixes by Freestyle Man, Losoul
and Guido Schneider or the current success of the latest
Moon Harbour-signing Luna City Express with their
singles “White Russian” (MHR 021) and the still hot and
vibrating “Fresh” (MHR 019), charting at rank six in the
July / August issue of the relevant German Groove
magazine!
Natürlich bieten die letzten Jahre genug Geschichten, die
es wert wären, noch einmal erzählt zu werden: Die ersten
Moon Harbour-Maxis von Gamat 3000 („Radio Moon“,
MHR 001) und Marlow („Trust in me“, MHR 002), die
tollen Veröffentlichungen unserer schwedischen Freunde
Håkan Lidbo und John Dahlbäck, die unvergessenen
Gast-Remixes von Freestyle Man, Losoul und Guido
Schneider oder der aktuelle Erfolg des jüngsten Moon
Harbour-Signings Luna City Express mit ihren

das sich auf Platz 6 der Juli / August-Ausgabe der
Groove-Charts tummelt!
Now, with the forthcoming label-compilation “FIVE –
Five Years of Moon Harbour” waiting in the wings, it
seems a great idea to be looking around contentedly,
and to review the diversification of our sound. Yet the
pulse beat goes on and stagnancy is …you know what.
That is why label boss Matthias Tanzmann bestows to
us, alongside the most successful tracks out of the
latest releases, a selection of eight previously
unreleased tracks.
Flashing up is the first track by Gamat 3000 in over four
years, shining along with label debuts by Martin
Landsky, Phil Stumpf (Duplex100) and Audio Werner.
What's more, is that Luna City Express and Mr.
Tanzmann himself do not hesitate to contribute
exclusive material. The Moon Harbour Express is rolling
– come aboard – we are looking forward to our next
label flights with you.
Nichts wäre also leichter gewesen, als sich mit der
bevorstehenden Labelcompilation „FIVE – Five Years of
Moon Harbour“ noch einmal zufrieden umzuschauen und
die Veränderung unseres Sounds Revue passieren zu
lassen. Doch der Puls schlägt weiter, und Stillstand ist …
ihr wisst schon. Darum beschert uns Labelchef Matthias
Tanzmann neben den erfolgreichsten Tracks der letzten
Veröffentlichungen auch gleich acht zuvor
unveröffentlichter Tracks. Da blinkt uns der erste Gamat
3000-Track seit über vier Jahren entgegen und strahlt mit
den Labeldebüts von Martin Landsky, Phil Stumpf
(Duplex 100) und Audio Werner um die Wette. Auch Luna
City Express und Herr Tanzmann himself lassen sich
nicht lumpen und steuern Exklusives bei. Der Moon

Groove (09-2005 / groove.de): Deep House, du hast es auch nicht leicht. Gerade fünf Jahre ist es her, da
schickte sich das Leipziger Label um Daniel Scholz und Matthias Tanzmann alias Gamat 3000 an, zusammen mit
verwandten Seelen wie Marlow, Vincenzo und Frankman eine Bastion der sanften Sinnlichkeit aufzubauen. Doch
in dem Maße, wie gerade in den vergangenen zwei Jahren die Wattebäuschchen aus dem House geschmissen
wurden, hat sich auch Moon Harbour konsequent neu orientiert. Hier rockt man zwar immer noch mit einem USgeprägten Grundverständnis, aber soundtechnisch darf es da auch einmal strenger werden. Mit acht neuen Tracks
u.a. von Label-Neuentdeckung Luna City Express, Tanzmann & Stefanik, Gamat 3000 und Marlow beschenkt man
sich mit reichlich Exklusivmaterial, das in der CD-Version mit sechs handerlesenen Beiträgen aus dem
Backkatalog zusammentrifft. Und während Phil Stumpf (Duplex 100) eine unglaublich lässige Synergie aus
modernisiertem Dubfunk und an Wildpitch erinnernden Rest-Acid zelebriert und Hartchef-Discos-Act Audio Werner
supertrockenen Spleenboogie abfeiert, schlagen Gamat 3000 sowie Martin Landsky dann doch wieder den Bogen

ist, liefert satte 70 Minuten feinsten Minimal-Deep-House, compiled und zum nahtlosen Flow gemixt von Labelchef
Matthias Tanzmann. Neben Bekanntem wie etwa ‚Fresh’ von Luna City Express, das jüngst die Top-Ten der
Groove-Charts enterte, gibt’s auch reichlich Neustoff: Acht der insgesamt 14 Tracks wurden exklusiv für diese
Compilation produziert, darunter etwa der erste Gamat-300-Track seit über vier Jahren sowie Labeldebüts von

Se sino a pochi anni fa sembrava solo un'utopia, ora la cosiddetta 'microhouse' rappresenta una vera e propria
realtà nonchè uno dei trends in costante crescita nello scenario europeo dedito alla sperimentazione musicale.
Tantissime le labels emerse negli ultimi anni che hanno subito mostrato interesse nei confronti di un genere che
per molti pareva non avere alcun futuro. Tra queste la Moon Harbour Recordings che, dalla sua base operativa
situata a Leipzig, diffonde onde di plastic-house in tutto il vecchio continente.
Per festeggiare il primo quinquennio d'attività, l'etichetta tedesca fondata e diretta da Matthias Tanzmann (partita
un pò in sordina ma oggi protagonista di ottimi risultati) rilascia la speciale compilation "Five Years Of Moon
Harbour", disponibile sia su cd che doppio vinile.
A selezionare e mixare le 14 tracce è stato proprio lo stesso Tanzmann che esibisce il meglio del catalogo
affiancandolo a pezzi realizzati appositamente. Da "Deviant Behaviour" di Daniel Stefanik ad "Higher" e "Fresh" di
Luna City Express sino a "Quiet" di Marlow featuring Delhia e "Them People" ed "Anyway" dell'accoppiata
Tanzmann & Stefanik.
Tra le esclusive invece si segnala la presenza di Gamat 3000 con "Flashback", "Boogie With You" di Audiowerner,
"I've Changed My Mind" di Marlow, "Flutes" di Martin Landsky e "Talking Slices" di Tanzmann & Stefanik. Tutte le
tracce (equivalenti a ben settanta minuti di musica) sono accomunate da suoni deep e costruzioni ritmiche ad
incastro che rammentano, per la tecnica, la techno primitiva di Detroit.

GAZ-ETA > NR 37 - LISTOPAD 2005 (11-2005): To już pięć lat, od kiedy w Lipsku powstała wytwórnia Moon
Harbour, założona przez producenta i didżeja Matthiasa Tanzmanna. Z tej okazji otrzymujemy kompaktowe
podsumowanie tego okresu działalności tłoczni, na które trafiły nagrania wybrane przez jej właściciela. Moon
Harbour specjalizuje się w lekkiej odmianie muzyki house. Większość z czternastu utworów z krążka porusza
miękka i motoryczna pulsacja bitu i basu o nadzwyczaj przyjemnej dla ucha barwie. Rzadko zdarzają się tu
jakiekolwiek elementy uzupełniające ten jednostajnie płynący rytm - jedynie w "Boogie With U" i "Fresh" Luna City
Express i Audio Wernera pojawiają się plemienne konga. Ciepły klimat tej muzyki wzmacniają jednak inne
elementy konstrukcji utworów. Mamy tu sporo zaloopowanych wokaliz lub głosów, tworzących chwytliwe refreny
(Luna City Express "Higher" i "Fresh", Marlow "Quiet", Matthias Tanzmann "Anyway", Tanzmann & Stefanik
"Talking Silence"). W każdym z utworów pojawiają się motywy syntezatorowe - raz jazzowe (Martin Landsky
"Flutes"), kiedy indziej dubowe (Luna City Express "Higher") lub ambientowe (Gamat 3000 "Flashback"). Nawet
kiedy Luna City Express sięga po soniczne akordy w detroitowym stylu, rozmiękcza je, nadając im płynne i
nieinwazyjne brzmienie. Tanzmann w dwu swoich utworach - "Anti Gravity" i "Anyway" - przywołuje echa
zapomnianego nieco bleepu, uzyskując nad wyraz energetyczne efekty. Jedynym zdecydowanie różniącym się
utworem z tej całości jest "Quiet" Marlowa, który niesie jakby "żywa" gra perkusji i towarzyszący jej nerwowy bas w
stylu nowofalowego disco. "Five Years Of Moon Harbour" plasuje wytwórnię Matthisa Tanzmanna obok takich
tłoczni, jak Perlon czy Playhouse. Teraz czas na pełne albumy związanych z nią wykonawców. PAWEŁ GZYL

„Die Wahl des richtigen Vertriebs kann manchmal für ein kleines Label alles entscheiden. Nicht nur dabei bewiesen
Moon Harbour Recordings aus Leipzig ein glückliches Händchen. Nach dem Entschluss zur Gründung der
Plattenfirma Silvester 1999/2000 in der Distillery hatten Matthias Tanzmann und André Quaas verschiedene
Vertriebe für ihren Deep-House-Sound ins Auge gefasst. Am Ende einigten sie sich mit Intergroove, der sich als
kompetent und professionell erwies. Viele der zunächst in Erwägung gezogenen Firmen existieren mittlerweile
nicht mehr, und haben nicht selten das eine oder andere Label mit in den Abgrund gerissen.
50 bis 75 Prozent jeder Vinylproduktion Moon Harbours, so André Quaas, gehen mittlerweile ins Ausland (bei CDProduktionen ist es umgekehrt), das Feedback erreicht die Leipziger Labelbetreiber unter anderem aus Australien,
Neuseeland, Japan und den USA. Freunde berichten schon mal aus dem Urlaub, auf welche Moon-HarbourPlatten sie in Record-Stores in Sydney oder Los Angeles gestoßen sind. Für Quaas kein Grund, die heimatliche
Szene zu vernachlässigen: Regelmäßig pflege man Kontakt zu hiesigen Plattenläden. Labelfächer seien sehr
wichtig in der elektronischen Musikszene, da hier die Labels auch immer für eine bestimmte
Veröffentlichungspolitik stünden. Ebenfalls eine Instanz sind die Labelnights, die Moon Harbour anfangs im
Kosmophon, jetzt in der Distillery durchführt.
Die Verantwortlichkeiten in der Firma sind klar verteilt: Matthias Tanzmann übernimmt den kreativen Part, André
Quaas ist für Business, Verwaltung und Logistik zuständig. Er übernimmt auch die Lizenzierung, sowie das
Künstlermanagement, das auch das DJ-Booking einschließt. Ausgerichtet ist Moon Harbour vor allem auf die Acts
Matthias Tanzmann und Marlow. Die Idee bei Labelgründung: Die eigenen Stars aufbauen.
Mittlerweile kann die Plattenfirma auf zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zurückblicken: Soeben erschien Release
Nummer 18, „Like Shrubbery?“ von Tanzmann & Stefanik, schnell mit Vorschusslorbeeren bedacht. Demnächst
wird eine “5 Jahre Moon Harbour“-Compilation auf Vinyl und CD erscheinen, die auch die Entwicklung vom
entspannteren Sound der ersten vier Jahre zu etwas raueren Klängen dokumentiert.
Wenn André Quaas sagt: „Ich höre auch heute noch gern unsere ersten Veröffentlichungen“, dann spielt er damit
auf zwei selbstgewählte Hauptmerkmale der Moon-Harbour-Ideologie an: Relevanz und Beständigkeit. Ein Teil
davon ist auch das äußere Erscheinungsbild des Labels: Seit vier Jahren zeichnet der Grafiker Yan (Jan Ziegner)
für das Artwork von Flyern, Postern etc. verantwortlich, das sich sehr schön mit der intelligenten elektronischen
Musik des Labels deckt. „Lieber weniger als mehr veröffentlichen“, sagt André Quaas, während er einen Stapel
CDs herüberreicht, den das Label für Kunden in den USA, Australien, Südafrika und Spanien lizensiert hat. Auf der
iberischen Halbinsel gab es für Kunden beim Kauf eines Neuwagens eine Moon-Harbour-CD als Anreiz umsonst in
die Unterhaltungselektronik des Kraftfahrzeugs. „Davon,“ so Quaas leicht bedauernd, „sind wir in Leipzig noch

Leipzig is niet direct een stad waarbij je denkt 'Dansmuziek!', maar de cultuurstad in het voormalige Oost-Duitsland
is niettemin de thuishaven van het Moon Harbour label. Bij de liefhebbers van de betere deep house en minimal is
Moon Harbour ongetwijfeld bekend en mocht dat nog niet het geval zijn, de labelverzamelaar Five Years Of Moon
Harbour is een uitstekende introductie.
Extreem productief is het label niet bepaald. In vijf jaar tijd verschenen er welgeteld 21 12 inches en dit is hun
eerste album release, die overigens ook als dubbele vinylschijf leverbaar is. Moon Harbour is het vehikel van
Matthias Tanzman en Daniel Stefanik, en qua muziekstijl zit het label precies tussen de labels van Steve Bug en
Vincenzo - Pokerflat en Dessous - in en het zal ook niet verbazen dat er een creatieve band is tussen Hamburg
(Pokerflat) en Leipzig (Moon Harbour).
Zo heeft Matthioas Tanzman onder de naam Gamat 3000 (een project met Daniel Scholz) platen uitgebracht op
Dessous en heeft Vincenzo op zijn beurt opgenomen voor Moon Harbour. Bovendien heeft Vincenzo een
residency in de club Kosmophon te Leipzig. Ook de Hamburger Jan Krüger maakt platen voor Moon Harbour,
terwijl gekende namen als Hakan Libdo en Frankman zich niet te groot achten op hun producties via Leipzig de
wereld in te sturen. We willen maar zeggen: Moon Harbour staat stevig geworteld in de Duitse minimal en techno
scene.
En hun devies lijkt te luiden: geen kwantiteit, maar kwaliteit. En dat geldt ook voor deze labelverzamelaar, die 14
recente tracks aan elkaar mixt. Daar zitten zes exclusieve producties tussen, dus DJ's moeten zeker op zoek naar
de vinylversie van dit album. Dit is geen muziek om wreed door het lint te gaan; wel een plaatje om het gezelschap
mee te verleiden en langzaam op temperatuur te brengen. Ook belangrijk.
De stijl van Moon Harbour: minimal en spaarzaam gearrangeerde techno met een dansvloer groove. Het heeft het
lege en het electronische van Pokerflat, maar doet tevens denken aan de smaakvolle deep house van Dessous.
Dat bleek al direct op de debuutrelease uit 2000: Radio Moon van Gamat 3000 (niet op dit album), en op de meest
recente uitgave - White Russian van Luna City Express (ook niet op dit album) - is dat nog steeds zo. Kwestie van
label identiteit en kwaliteitscontrole. Dat zit wel goed bij Moon Harbour.
Op Five Years Of Moon Harbour ligt de nadruk op recente releases; slechts twee van de acht eerder verschenen
tracks ( de rest is zoals gemeld nieuw) zijn ouder dan een jaar. Daarbij valt op dat alles aan Moon Harbour
vlekkeloos is geproduceerd, zonder een klinische of doodse indruk te maken. Die aandacht voor detail wordt
doorgezet in de opbouw van deze verzamelaar. Het begint allemaal relatief rustig en bouwt gaandeweg op naar
steeds stuwender tracks, zonder dat nu direct de verf van de muur gaat.
Het zijn geen schreeuwerds, daar in Leipzig. Maar vergis je niet, ze weten precies waar ze mee bezig zijn. Kwaliteit
zonder opsmuk of franje, daar wordt de minimal liefhebber blij van.

Beatburger.com / Spain (11-2005): El año 2005 quizás haya sido el más prospero de la vida del sutil sello de
Leipzig, la misma ciudad que se presentó a candidata a albergar los Juegos Olímpicos del 2012 y no pasó de
¿primera ronda? No sé si los Tanzmann, Stefanik, Marlow y compañía destacarían en el pentatlón o si sacarían
medalla a las canicas, pero como productores llevan años produciendo a un gran nivel.
Esta temporada, sin haber sacado ningún pelotazo del nivel de “Anyway”, hemos podido paladear cinco disquitos
de house profundo y escurridizo, de base minimalista, y sentimiento alemán, sin rehuir de los vocales ni de las
pinceladas de cara a la pista, siempre todo, totalmente en la línea marcada desde el primer día por el comandante
a la sombra, André Quaas. Hemos dicho que este año no ha habido pelotazos, no, pero quizás este año hayan
encontrado su disco más redondo de la mano de un joven llamado Daniel Stefanik y su “Move Me”, que se coló en
los charts de media Europa gracias a tres estupendos temas como el propio “Move Me” (con remezcla del gran
Guido Schneider, que está en todos los buenos fregaos), “Liquid”, y sobretodo, “Deviant Behaviour”. Con este
tema empieza el viaje que Matthias Tanzmann nos tiene preparado durante poco más de 70 minutos directo al
bisoño corazón de Moon Harbour.
Este cd mix está compuesto por 14 temas, 8 de ellos producidos para la ocasión, tanto por habituales de la casa
como Luna City Express, Gamat 3000, Marlow, o el propio Matthias Tanzmann, en solitario, y junto al mencionado
Stefanik, como por estrellas emergentes como Phil Stumpf y Audio Werner, o el consagrado y siempre eficaz
Martin Landski. Los otros 6 son seguramente los más populares de MH, destacando sobremanera, y como no
podía ser de otra forma, “Anyway”.
En definitiva, buen desarrollo de sesión el llevado por un Tanzmann cada vez más enchufado en la espiral de
clubs europeos, colocando a su vez a Moon Harbour, como uno de los mejores sellos de este año que se está
