Spring 2014 - Conservation Voters of South Carolina
WELCOME TO THE TEAM I AM A CONSERVATION
VOTER
SPRING 2014
I am Jennie Peze and I am Conservation
Voter. I grew up on my family’s farm in
Darlington County. My earliest memories
include walking in the woods with my dad
identifying plants. My path has led me to
Montana, D.C., Boston and back to South
Carolina but my path has always remained
focused on the outdoors.
Shawn Drury joined our team as Field Director last September.
A former teacher and journalist, he is a native of northeastern
Pennsylvania. While working for AOL in South Carolina he was named
one of the best political journalists in the country by The Washington
Post. He has moderated numerous debates and appeared on
television and radio as a political expert. In the new position of
Field Director, Shawn will direct campaigns, field operations and
communications.
Alan Hancock took the reins of Program Director in November when
Jenni Asman accepted a job at Georgia State University. A North
Carolina native, Alan received a BA and MA from the University of
South Carolina in geography. He worked for DHEC for seven years
in air quality regulation and enforcement - ensuring that polluters
paid fair penalties and that air pollution regulations were scientifically
sound. Alan primarily directs our Palmetto Green Schools Initiative
and our uPowerSC program. Alan is currently participating in Furman
University’s Diversity Institute.
I have found a way to work and play
outside, whether it was working in the
tobacco and soybean fields or labeling

prettiest stream, with swift moving, black
water and high banks covered in mountain laurel and sparkleberry,
right here in Darlington.
THE RACE IS ON
A NEW LOOK
You spoke and we listened. More than half of the responders to
our recent member survey said that “CVSC should be better known
to the general public.” We could not agree more.
I'm scared of snakes and other biting things under the water, but I
just figure it's worth the risk to get to enjoy life outdoors. I care about
having elected officials who will protect the South Carolina I love. I am
a Conservation Voter and believe CVSC has the nerve and the power
to elevate the dialogue about conservation. I believe we can't get the
job done without organizations like CVSC.
We hope you approve of our new logo. We believe it conveys
that we are a father and son fishing together. We are old friends
sharing time under an oak tree. We are future generations who
will choose to work and live in South Carolina because of our
unparalleled quality of life.
In addition to our logo, we are working on a new website. We have
expanded our team with a Field Director-ready to multiply and
mobilize our members. We are planning more events across the
state to introduce ourselves and our endorsed candidates.
That’s the kind of Conservation Voter I am. What kind are you?
Share your conservation story - send it to [email protected].
You know we are your eyes and ears at the State House ensuring
that legislators remember the father and son, the old friends, and
the future generations….when they make decisions. We invite you
to introduce us to your friends, family and co-workers. Together,
we are all “conservation voters” working to protect the South
Carolina we love.
It’s time to elect a Governor who counts our natural resources as a
blessing. We don’t have big skyscrapers or major league sports - but
we are rich in natural resources. Millions of people visit South Carolina
every year: they come here to swim on our beaches, to hike in our
mountains, to fish in our lakes and rivers and to hunt in our fields and
forests.
Vincent Sheheen is a proven leader and a conservationist. He is in
step with prior Republican and Democratic Governors who recognized
that natural resources enrich our economy and our lives. Forestry,
farming, outdoor recreation and tourism account for over $50 billion
– or one third of our economy.
Conservation Voters’ first-ever Governor’s Report Card evaluated
Nikki Haley’s conservation record and the impact of her administration
on the health of our economy and our people. Haley earned a “D”
for being out of step with South Carolina’s conservation values and
for failing to make natural resource protection a core function of
government.
The Governor’s low regard for conservation was hammered home
during her State of the State address when she spoke not a
word about our state’s natural resources. She ignored the fact
that South Carolina has fallen behind its neighbors in sustainable
energy development; our reputation as the nation’s dumping
ground flourishes; repeat polluters continue to pollute; and coastal
communities remain vulnerable to increased flooding from extreme
weather.

OUR EDISTO
OUR FUTURE
We learned in December that DHEC had months ago approved an
agricultural “registration” for a new farming operation to draw as
much as 9 billion gallons annually from the South Fork, CVSC quickly
responded.
Our call for DHEC to hold a public information session was
answered. On a frigid evening in early January, we joined more
than 400 citizens to hear DHEC explain what the current law
requires and consider how to refine the agricultural withdrawal
process under the Surface Water Withdrawal Act.
CVSC worked with stakeholders for over three years to pass a
compromise water permitting bill. Given the threat at that time
that Atlanta might siphon whatever it wanted from the Savannah,
most of the negotiations focused on ensuring that industrial users
left enough water flowing in our rivers for “boats, bass and bubbas,”
a phrase made famous by Senator Chip Campsen. We know now
that not enough attention was paid to the Act’s lenient process for
agricultural withdrawals.
We are encouraged that Friends of the Edisto (FRED) and Walther
Farms reached a settlement to delay a second registration by
a year and reduce the amount of water taken from the Edisto
by roughly half. The state water basin modeling studies will take
several years to complete. For now, Senator Campsen’s S.970 is a
“measured response” and a necessary first step. Representative
James Smith is working on legislation in the House.

UPPING
THE ANTE
To protect our land, air and water and provide a
clean energy future, we need better legislation.
Better laws require better legislators…and that
means recruiting more conservation minded
candidates and voters. In order for this to
happen we must “up the ante” for conservation.
But first, I want to thank all of you for your
generous contributions in 2013. Every donation
is important to us. Last year was a turning
point. We filled three vacated staff positions
and added a fifth. Our team is stronger than
ever and ready to take on big challenges in
2014.
Your responses to our calls for action are
making a difference. You helped us convince
DHEC to schedule a public meeting about the
Edisto. You helped us convince legislators to
back away from out-of-state trash. You helped
extend the Conservation Bank for five more
years. You give us power but we are not yet
powerful enough.
Last year, we couldn’t move the most common
sense solar leasing bills out of House and
Senate subcommittees. Isn’t it ironic to think
that a state that prides itself on self-reliance
and conservative thinking won’t remove barriers
to let folks take advantage of the SUN? Your
collective voices are keeping negotiations alive
for solar legislation this year.
With your help, we will use our “Green for
Sheheen in 2014” campaign to raise more
money, grow more members, and recruit
more volunteers for the 2014 elections.
“GiveGreenSC” will enable you to contribute
online to either our PAC or directly to
candidates we endorse. It’s a win-win because
you and Conservation Voters both get credit
when you donate.
The contrast could not be clearer in the
Governor’s race.
Vincent Sheheen welcomes conservation
support. Nikki Haley shuns it. Vincent Sheheen
envisions business and natural resources
as complimentary. Nikki Haley sees them at
odds. Vincent Sheheen is in step with South
Carolinians’ sense of stewardship. Nikki Haley
resorts too often to national rhetoric.
Taking on an incumbent Governor is risky but it
is our job to stand up for the environment. We
cannot afford to have conservation ignored for
four more years.

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
WE THANK OUR 2013 DONORS
