Spring is in full swing, and let’s be honest . . . we really look forward to spring because it means
warmer weather, more activities, more time outdoors, additional daylight hours and warm-weather
clothing—maybe even a swimsuit!
Now, let’s be even more honest.
Are you fit enough for all that spring brings?
I’m not just talking about being fit to rock that swimwear at the beach. At Garden of Life®, we’re
interested in all areas of your health, including diet, limiting exposure to toxins, your energy levels, if
your weight is where you want it to be and much, much more.
The truth is that we take our mission of Empowering Extraordinary Health® seriously. In fact,
we’re so serious about “walking the talk” that our own employees are stepping up their fitness levels by
walking 10,000 steps a day! Check out the story on page 56.
And speaking of being fit . . . a must-read section in this magazine edition is about our new RAW
Fit™, a USDA Certified Organic, RAW, vegan, high-protein supplement that boosts your metabolism
and helps to burn more fat, while building, repairing and maintaining lean muscle mass.† It’s truly
nothing short of amazing and can be your secret weapon for achieving a lean, healthy—and fit—body.
So, be sure to find out more about it on pages 24 through 29.
Here at Garden of Life, we also know that eating right goes hand in hand with being fit, so this
spring we have our “Take a Walk on the Lighter Side” recipes and a highlighted section of recipes
featuring RAW Protein and RAW Meal. They’ll fill you up without weighing you down. They’re on
pages 38 and 54, respectively.
While I’m on the topics of RAW Protein and RAW Meal, our Garden of Life-sponsored athletes are
definitely fit, and RAW Protein and RAW Meal are mainstays of their regimens. For example, the Red
Sox have gone RAW with Garden of Life’s RAW Meal (page 12), while the YOLO Board Elite Team
Riders who participate in stand up paddleboard (SUP) races, all power up with our RAW Protein,
RAW Meal and Vitamin Code® RAW ONE™ multivitamins. (See page 6).
Likewise, Garden of Life-sponsored athlete Ingo Rademacher, featured on this
season’s Dancing With the Stars and highlighted in this edition on page 16,
points out, “It’s hard to find clean, USDA organic and non-GMO supplements.
That’s why I’m telling everyone to check out Garden of Life and RAW Meal!”
And since we’re being honest . . . you had to have noticed who is on the
cover of this edition of Extraordinary Health™ magazine: Jessica Alba. She, too,
is fit and is well known for her success in numerous movies, but she’s also
a change agent in the area of organic, non-toxic living. In 2012,
she co-founded The Honest Company, an online store offering
household, personal care and family products. Like her movies,
it was an immediate blockbuster hit, particularly with moms
and health-conscious consumers. There’s much more to her
story, though, so don’t miss it. You can find it on page 20.
You know, I can honestly say that I enjoy springtime and all
the activities that accompany it.
I can also honestly say that Garden of Life is dedicated to
helping you get fit and stay fit—not just for spring, but for the
long haul.
That’s why we do what we do.
Enjoy your spring and this edition of Extraordinary Health.

RAWor COOKED:
A T al e o f T w o V e gg i e s
Which are better for you—RAW veggies or cooked veggies?
RAW veggies come out way ahead of cooked ones.
You might call it a tale of two veggies—RAW or cooked.
While some say there’s no advantage to eating RAW
veggies over cooked veggies, nothing could be further
from the truth.
To begin with, raw veggies are packed with enzymes,
while cooked veggies are nearly drained of them. But
just why are enzymes so important? Without enzymes,
vitamins and minerals are ineffective because every
vitamin and mineral requires an enzyme to work properly.
Cooked veggies have had most, if not all, of the
enzymes cooked out of them because enzymes
can’t survive past a certain cooking temperature of
approximately 115 degrees Fahrenheit—and most cooked
veggies are cooked at much higher temps than that.
And if you don’t have those enzymes, then you’re not
going to absorb whatever vitamins or minerals are left in
those cooked veggies. (By the way, vitamin C and the B
vitamins are among the first to go when cooking veggies.)
The truth is that RAW veggies still have their enzymes,
so you not only get those enzymes, but you also
receive activated vitamins and minerals and more,
including chlorophyll, lutein and indoles (which fight
off unhealthy cells) from green veggies. You also get
carotenoids (colorful plant pigments packed with
antioxidants for cellular, cardiovascular and immune
health) and polyphenols (which act as antioxidants to
support cardiovascular health and more) from most
RAW veggies.
For example, RAW broccoli retains the enzyme
myrosinase, which breaks down glucosinates into a
compound called sulforaphane, known to support
healthy cells, to keep unhealthy, rogue cells at bay and
to fight unhealthy bacteria. RAW broccoli also contains
indoles for cellular health.
Likewise, RAW broccoli and other RAW green
veggies are abundant in chlorophyll, which has an
alkalizing nature and a cleansing effect on bodily
elimination systems, resulting in cleansing of the
blood, lymph and intracellular fluid. Chlorophyll also
delivers oxygen to our tissues and supports the growth
of friendly bacteria.
Let’s take a look at the vitamins and minerals that are in the following RAW veggies,
but become deactivated once those veggies are cooked.
RAW Broccoli and RAW Spinach Contain:
Vitamin A • Vitamin C • Vitamin K • Folate • Calcium
Iron • Magnesium • Potassium • Zinc • Manganese • Selenium
And what about cooked broccoli and spinach? You lose out on those “activated” vitamins,
minerals and more, since their enzymes and other valuable nutrients are destroyed by the heat.

California Dreamin’
. . . of a Statewide Plastic Bag Ban
City by city and county by
county, millions of Californians
are taking a stand against plastic
bags to keep them from polluting
beaches, killing marine life and
burdening taxpayers.
If millions of Californians could have
their dream come true, then single-use
plastic bags would be banned statewide,
nationwide and worldwide. To date,
their dream hasn’t been realized, but it’s
certainly not from lack of trying. In fact,
one of the most recent attempts to ban the
plastic bags was via Assembly Bill (AB)
298, which was a bill to ban single-use
plastic bags statewide at supermarkets,
retail pharmacies and convenience stores
in California starting in 2014. AB 298
would have also required retailers to
provide reusable bags for sale and to
charge a fee for recycled paper bags—all to
incentivize people to remember to use their
reusable bags.
Unfortunately, AB 298 failed to pass the
California State Senate.
But that won’t stop Californians from
their bag-ban mission. In fact, in a
little over the past two years, over 50
California cities or counties have voted
to ban single-use plastic bags. When all of
those ordinances go into effect, then nearly
one-third, or approximately 38 million, of
Californians will reside in plastic bag-free
communities. That in itself is a win, but
Californians won’t stop until they
accomplish the dream.
Banning the plastic bags is not just a
trendy bandwagon to jump on, either.
Plastic bags have serious consequences
for beaches and other waters, marine
life and other wildlife, and even for
land-based taxpayers.
Truth be told, single-use plastic bags are
one of the most common forms of waste
found on beaches that make their way into
the ocean, becoming part of what’s called
the “Great Floating Garbage Patch” or the
“Pacific Gyre.” (By the way, there’s also one
in the Atlantic Ocean—a similar story, but
a different location.)
In fact, over the last 25 years, 7,825,319
plastic bags were collected from beaches
around the world. Plastic bags can also
clog drains and create mosquito breeding
grounds during warmer months, resulting
in other health consequences.
Adding to the plastic-bag nemesis is
that plastic bags last nearly indefinitely—
since they’re not biodegradable—to
continually work their damage. What’s
more is that of the 115 billion plastic bags
used nationally each year, only a dismal five
percent are recycled. (California alone uses
a whopping 12 billion plastic bags a year.)
Likewise, pollution from those plastic
bags directly affects 267 animal species
annually, including whales, fish, birds,
and turtles. Speaking of turtles . . . the
Pacific Leatherback sea turtle, which
consumes jellyfish, can mistake plastic bags
for jellyfish. Unfortunately, one-third of
adult turtles have consumed the plastic,
which undoubtedly adds to the reason why
the Leatherback sea turtle population has
declined by 95 percent in the last 20
years. Additionally, plastic bags make their
way into wilderness areas where they can
choke and kill animals.
Marine life and wildlife are not the
only ones who pay the cost of plastic
bags, however. California taxpayers spend
approximately $25 million each year to
landfill used plastic bags—money which
could certainly be used for better purposes.
L.A. County alone spends $24 million
on litter prevention, cleanup efforts and
enforcement, with plastic bags weighing in
significantly on those costs.
Getting rid of those plastic bags could
also result in Green jobs in California,
as there are currently 15 reusable bag
companies based in California. One of
those companies, Green Vets, could see
more jobs created for disabled veterans if
there would be a statewide plastic bag
ban law.
The bottom line is that there is so much
good that can come from getting rid of
those plastic bags.
Unfortunately, Californians haven’t seen
the plastic bag ban realized—yet.
They will keep trying, however, while
the rest of the nation watches expectantly.

Parent Trap
THE
For the healthy family, school lunches
and after-school snacks can often be
a challenge. Avoid the parent trap of
unhealthy options with these nutritious
tips, ideas and recipes. You’ll have
healthier and happier kids!
Proteins:
Proteins are essential for
practically every process that
occurs within the body—especially
growing bodies. So, what are some
good protein choices for your
child’s lunch? Lunch meats and
fish (such as tuna) that are free
of artificial ingredients, growth
hormones and antibiotics are top
picks. For your vegetarian choices,
try boiled eggs (egg salad), hummus,
nut butters and trail mix with seeds
and nuts. Cheese cubes are quick and
easy for kids to munch on as well.

With the ever-increasing temptations of processed foods that many kids tend to
gravitate toward for school lunches and after-school snacks, parents need some tips and
tricks to keep their children interested and excited about eating nutritious food.
Let’s start with healthy lunches—ones that are tasty, fun, quick and easy to prepare.
The key is to start with these building blocks: include at least one protein, one vegetable
and one fruit in each lunch.
Vegetables:
Make eating veggies fun by
adding a variety of colors,
shapes, textures and tastes.
Challenge your child to eat
the “colors of the rainbow”
every day—and Skittles®
don’t count! Bell peppers,
carrot sticks, fun finger foods
such as cherry tomatoes,
sugar snap peas and sliced
cucumbers are the way to go.
Fruits:
Let your child pick out
what fruit he or she likes.
Not all kids prefer apples,
but bananas or strawberries
might satisfy. Some children
prefer various textures,
including chewy fruit leather
or soft applesauce. Avoid
fruit snacks that are filled
with sugar. Likewise, remind
your children that sugary
fruit snacks don’t grow
on trees!
Now for some yummy after-school snack ideas! Set out an
ice tray filled with various nuts, seeds, berries and dried
fruit. Or try ants on a log, fruit kabobs with yogurt dip,
hummus with sliced veggies or guacamole with carrot sticks
or crackers. Blended fruit smoothies are also delicious while
packing in a lot of nutrients. Try some of my “kid-approved”
recipes that are healthy, sweet and “special diet” friendly.
Get your children involved with making their
own lunches, since they are more likely to eat foods
that they helped pick out and create. Offer variety
throughout the week, and simply mix and match
within the three categories.

Nothing ushers in the promise of spring
like baseball. For many decades, hardcore
baseball fans have fled from winter blizzards
up North to pay homage to their major league
teams in Florida’s Grapefruit League. Boston
Red Sox fans annually make the trek to Fort
Myers to paint the town red, to check out new
players and to optimistically assess the team’s
chances for the upcoming season.
On February 23, we decided to attend
the Sox’s spring training opener against
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at JetBlue Park,
which is sometimes affectionately referred
to as “The Fenway of Florida.” We decked
ourselves out in red from head to toe for
several reasons. The first was because a
couple of my work buddies, Ursula Zamora
and Angela DiGloria, are Bostonians and
rabid Red Sox fans. The second reason was
due to one of the strength coaches being kind
enough to give us excellent seats behind home
plate in a choice section populated by longtime season-ticket holders and baseball wives.
The most important reason for wearing
red, however, was because the strength coach
informed us that the entire team was taking
Garden of Life® RAW Meal, the #1 selling
meal replacement in the Natural Products
Industry, and that they were also hooked on
our Fruits of Life™ bars. We were anxious to
see if the supplements could help the team
overcome last year’s dismal season when
more than three-fourths of the roster was
hampered by injuries and there seemed to be
no love for the team’s manager, even though
his last name was Valentine. But on this day,
hope seemed to hang on a balmy breeze as
fans enthusiastically bantered about the new
coach, John Farrell, a few trades and the fact
that legendary Pedro Martinez was back to
help the coaching staff.
The first thing we noticed was that the
almost brand-spanking new JetBlue Park is
like a mini replica of Fenway. Even the
seats are similar, with grandstand and
Monster seating. Black and white photos of
Red Sox heroes are plastered everywhere,
along with historic milestones and the
obligatory statue of Ted Williams. (I tried
very hard not to think of Ted’s head
floating in preservative liquid nitrogen
somewhere in a storage vault,
as per his last wishes.
It just didn’t seem
fitting somehow!)
When the game
started, Sox fans
chattered about pitcher
John Lackey’s return to
the mound after missing
the entire 2012 season
due to Tommy John
surgery. Although he looked a little shaky at
times, he allowed only one run in one inning
and got out of hot water by retiring three
straight batters when Tampa Bay loaded the
bases. Overall, fans seemed to think he was
ready for the starting rotation.
The Red Sox Nation exploded into
deafening cheers when a two-run homer by
Jose Iglesias tied it 3-3 in the seventh. By
this time we were starving, but knew our
chances of finding halfway healthy food at
the concession stands would be slim. Luckily,
we stumbled upon the “Taste of Fenway
South,” a huge, tented area serving seafood,
beef, grilled chicken and “real” food instead
of peanuts and Cracker Jack. Unfortunately,
while we were checking out this food oasis,
we missed a Tampa Bay homer by Leslie
Anderson that put the Devil Rays ahead
for good.
The final score ended up 4-3 for
the Rays, but as a sea of slightly
sunburned Red Sox fans
filed out of the park, no one
seemed to be upset by the
loss. For long-suffering
Sox fans, winning isn’t
everything—and being
loyal to the team is the
only thing that counts.

Cam
Awesome
Vegan Boxer
By Rhonda Price
Wins USA Boxing National Title
Talk to almost any boxer, wrestler or mixed martial arts fighter
and they’ll tell you one of the hardest things they must do in order
to compete is lose pounds or “cut weight.” While many fighters
drastically reduce carbs, fat, salt and calories a few weeks before
a competition, boxing champ Cam F. Awesome happily chows
down on anything he desires and typically consumes thousands
of calories per day. That’s the advantage of being vegan, which
allows him to enter the ring “plant strong,” while opponents are
sometimes weaker from dieting.
The strategy is working well for the 24-year old from Lenexa,
Kansas, who recently racked up his ninth national title by winning
the 2013 USA Boxing Elite National Championship in Spokane,
Washington. Competing in the Super Heavyweight Division,
14
www.GardenofLife.com
Cam unleashed his plant-based power on several opponents before
defeating former champion Paul Koon. Cam took control early on,
dodging left hooks and countering with his own jarring blows to the
windpipe. He never let up, landing an onslaught of body blows that
took a visible toll on Koon and led to his downfall. By the end of the
match, the judges had no trouble awarding the gold medal to Cam
with a unanimous 3-0 decision.
An elated Cam took a victory spin around the ring in his cape and
then thanked his sponsors, including Garden of Life®, JumpNRope,
IntimidationMMA, Ring Side Boxing, iXLDoU and Engine2Diet. He
was later told that his victory was an important milestone, as he now
holds more titles in his weight class than anyone in the history of USA
Boxing. How much of his success is due to living a vegan lifestyle?
According to Cam, it’s made all the difference.
“I lost almost 60 pounds after I became a vegan—and got much
stronger in the process,” he said. “I used to be very awkward, but now I
am faster, stronger, and I can fight nonstop without getting tired.”
Cam follows the Engine2 Diet and travels with his plant-based food
coaches and friends, Bill and Ami Mackey, when he competes. Instead
of staying in hotels, they rent condos equipped with kitchens and head
to the nearest health food store to load up on organic produce, fruit,
nuts, and grains. Ami is a certified nutritionist who conducts 28-day
Engine2 Challenges at Whole Foods when she’s not spoiling Cam with
delicious vegan meals. While he prepared for his fights in Spokane, Cam
was treated to Buckwheat Raisin Banana Pancakes, Brown Rice Kamut
and Oats, Burrito Bowl Salads with Red Quinoa, and Roasted Sweet
Potatoes. His favorite snacks include fresh pineapple and peanut butter
on sprouted Ezekiel bread.
Cam’s food coaches also introduced him to Garden of Life
supplements, recommending them as the #1 selling brand in the
industry. They’re perfect for him because they are RAW, vegan,
Non-GMO, and USDA Certified Organic. In no time at all, Cam was
sold on the benefits of RAW Protein, RAW Meal, and Vitamin Code®
RAW ONE™ for Men multivitamins, just to name a few. His long-term
plans are to keep clobbering his opponents with raw, plant-based power
until he reaches the 2016 Olympics. To some, it might seem like a lofty
goal, but not for Cam, who won the Olympic trials in 2012.
“I feel amazing,” Cam said, as he packed to go to the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs. He also talked about a few other
goals, such as fighting to increase awareness for breast cancer and
teaching people the health benefits of a vegan diet. He said his only
regret is his hectic travel schedule, which will mean missing his little
sister’s upcoming high school graduation.
“I’m bummed about that,” he said.
But admittedly, everything else in his world is
just plain AWESOME.

Ingo Rademacher Joins Dancing With the Stars by Rhonda Price
At Garden of Life, our love affair with
ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (DWTS)
started last year when we discovered that
winsome judge Carrie Ann Inaba was a
fan of our Vitamin Code® RAW ONE™
for Women multivitamins. This spring
we are more dialed in than ever, as one
of our sponsored athletes, Ingo Rademacher,
attempts to waltz, tango and jive his way
to the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.
Paired with professional dancer Kym
Johnson, “Team Ingo” is expected to get
plenty of votes from daytime soap opera
fans who have drooled over Rademacher for
18 years when he played the role of Jasper
Jacks on General Hospital. Other fans may
have caught a glimpse of him last year in
the homicide movie, Alex Cross. But what
most of his admirers don’t realize is that he’s
also an accomplished athlete who actively
competes on the stand-up paddleboard
(SUP) race circuit, a feat that requires
balance and concentration that should help
him immensely on DWTS.
A member of the YOLO SUP race team,
sponsored by Garden of Life, Ingo moved
to Hawaii last year so he could pursue his
passion for paddleboarding. He’s already
made his mark on the sport by winning
several races in Florida and placing second in
the 2011 Blue Ridge SUP Splash. He

Ingo’s a staunch supporter of environmental
movements such as Greenpeace, Water

movement,” said Ingo. “I am particularly
against genetically modified foods (GMOs),
and I’m currently active in a big campaign in
Hawaii to get Monsanto off our islands!”
Ingo was born in a small village in West
Germany, but later moved with his family to
Australia, where he worked on a 400-acre
cattle ranch and Angora goat station. His
athletic pursuits started early, as he was a
rugby player and a ski champion at the age
of eight, a professional equestrian in jumping
and dressage at age 10, and a professional
beach volleyball player and Ironman
triathlete in his teens. His partner on DWTS
says his athletic skills should give him a leg
up on the competition.
“He looks like a movie star, but he’s also
athletic,” said Kym, who also noted that the
two hit it off immediately because she also
hails from Australia. “We’re Team Aussie!”
Already in great shape from his intense
paddleboard workouts, Ingo will be fueling
his grueling dance sessions with Garden
of Life supplements. For years, he’s been
using Wobenzym® N for inflammation and
everyday aches and pains, but now he’s
added a RAW Meal shake and several other
supplements to his morning routine.
“It’s hard to find clean, USDA organic,
non-GMO supplements,” said Ingo. “That’s

Jessica
Alba
Lives the HONEST LIFE
By Rhonda Price
When we spoke with Jessica Alba,
she was expertly whizzing through a
maze of traffic snarls in Los Angeles
while safely talking on her Bluetooth.
She admitted that her day was already
off to a hectic start, and she had
skipped her usual, healthy breakfast of
egg whites, spinach, and turkey bacon—
while settling for two cups of coffee
and a few hurried bites of a doughnut.
“At least the doughnut was gluten
free!” she rationalized, before adding,
“But who am I kidding? It’s pure sugar.
And now the rest of the day, all I’m
going to want is sugar!”
20

We learned that if there’s one thing
refreshing about Jessica, it’s that she’s,
well—honest. She’s not afraid to admit that,
although she may seemingly live a charmed,
unspoiled life as one of Hollywood’s A-list
stars, when it comes right down to it, she’s
time crunched with a “to-do list” a mile
long just like the rest of us. With two young
daughters, she’s also like most mothers who
are determined to make their children their
top priority.
“I think all parents want to do the best
for their children,” she said. ”And I believe
most people are trying to keep their kids safe
and healthy, but there’s so much confusing
information out there, and they don’t have
time to scour the Internet for the truth about
dangerous ingredients, chemicals and food
additives. I’m a research nut and like to know
where everything comes from, so that’s why
I wanted to come up with handy resources
that could help people.”
When Jessica and her husband, Cash
Warren, decided to start their family a few
years ago, she was frustrated by the few
eco-friendly, organic and chemical-free
products that she felt she could trust. She
bumped into Christopher Gavigan, former
CEO of the popular non-profit Healthy
Child Healthy World, and the two
immediately started
brainstorming
about solutions
that would be
healthier for
families and
children. The result
of their collaboration
was founding The
Honest Company
in January 2012, an
online store that offers
organic, non-toxic
household, personal care
and family products. The
company immediately
resonated with moms and
health-conscious consumers, spawning Alba’s
upcoming book, The Honest Life: Living
Naturally and True to You (Rodale).
Jessica says her company’s mission is
simple: to offer a family brand with products
that work tremendously well and are
affordable, beautiful and don’t contain any
harmful chemicals.

parents want
to do the
best for their

Steering Clear
of What’s
Dishonest
Jessica’s “Aha!”
moment about the
dangers of everyday
household products
came after suffering
an allergic reaction to a
“safe” baby detergent that her mother had
sworn by for years. She started meticulously
researching ingredients on labels and was
appalled to discover that more than 80,000
untested chemicals had been introduced to
the market and added to products since she
was a child.
“It was an eye opener to learn that all
these so-called ‘tried and true’ products
people have trusted and used for years aren’t
necessarily the same formulas anymore,”
she said. “There are almost 30 percent more
chemicals in our consumer goods than there
were when President Gerald Ford signed
the Toxic Substance Control Act in 1976. So
that ‘special’ baby detergent may have been
okay when our moms washed our clothes in
it years ago, but today, it probably contains
synthetic fragrances and a chemical called
propylene glycol, both of which can cause
skin rashes and allergic reactions.”
Determined that she and other parents
shouldn’t need a Chemistry degree in
order to have a safe home, she investigated
hundreds of other products before realizing
that toxic chemicals are lurking everywhere.
She was extremely upset to find harmful

The Sick Kid in School
One of the main reasons Jessica is motivated
to provide the healthiest environment and
lifestyle for her children is because her own
childhood was marred by numerous chronic
illnesses and maladies. By the time she was
eight years old, she suffered from partially
collapsed lungs, a ruptured appendix, a cyst on
her tonsils and countless bouts with pneumonia.
She stayed in the hospital so much that her
classmates barely knew her, and when she was
occasionally able to attend school functions,
severe asthma usually made socializing with
others impossible.
“I had full-blown allergies and asthma for
years,” she recalls. “If I went to a soccer game
or a baseball game, it was awkward because I
couldn’t sit on the grass with everyone else or
I’d break out in welts. Most of the time I’d sit
in the stands with my breathing machine, and
it was so embarrassing to always be lugging that
thing around. It was not fun!”
So far, Alba’s two daughters, five-year-old
Honor Marie and one-year-old Haven Garner,
have been blessed with good health, which is
why Jessica and her husband continue to do
everything they can to limit their exposure
to toxins and to nourish them with organic,
unprocessed food.
Sexy and They Know It

chemicals hidden in common items such as lipstick, pillow cases and even baby mattresses.
“Baby mattresses were the last straw for me!” she said. “It was infuriating to think of all
these mothers who are breastfeeding and trying to keep their babies healthy, but the babies
are breathing in the harmful ‘off gassing’ and fumes from the mattresses. It’s not like kids’
pajamas that are covered in flame retardant that can be removed with a few washes. Most
baby mattresses are solidified petroleum.”
Jessica’s research led her to take on the role of an activist in 2001 when she lobbied
Congress in support of the Safe Chemicals Act. While sharing her findings with legislators,
she noted that most of them admitted they were shocked to know that companies are not
required to test chemicals for safety. She believes the deceptive practice of “green washing”
by huge corporations leads to further misconceptions about product safety.
“Most people I talk with think there are safety measures in place that are protecting
them, but it’s not true—plain and simple!” she said. “Even worse, chemical companies have
huge marketing budgets and can afford to run ad campaigns that make people think their
products are safe and environmentally friendly. This green washing is dishonest, and it
makes me crazy!”

www.GardenofLife.com
When she’s not working at her office at The
Honest Company or tending to her family,
Jessica’s film roles have made her one of the
most beloved actresses in Tinseltown. She
started acting when she was 11, appearing in
films such as Camp Nowhere and the 1994
television series, Flipper. She was memorable
in her role as a snobby high school teen in
Drew Barrymore’s comedy Never Been Kissed
in 1999, but her big break came in 2000 when
director James Cameron cast her from more
than 1,200 actresses for the role of super-soldier
Max Guevara on the Fox series Dark Angel. The
show lasted for two seasons and earned her a
Golden Globe nomination.
Over the next decade, her films included:
Sin City, Awake, Good Luck Chuck, Fantastic
Four, Into the Blue, The Eye, The Killer Inside
Me, Valentine’s Day, The Love Guru, Fantastic
Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Machete. All
the while, she has been named to every “most
beautiful” list imaginable, including Maxim
magazine’s Hot 100 list, People magazine’s 50
Most Beautiful People and GQ magazine’s 25
Sexiest Women in Film of All Time.
Although some actresses have opted
to bare all to increase their popularity,
Jessica insists on a rigid “no nudity”
clause in her contracts. In fact, she
sued Playboy magazine in 2006 when
a teaser on the cover implied that
she was featured in a nude pictorial.
The lawsuit was dropped when the
magazine’s owner, Hugh Hefner,
apologized and made generous
donations to several charities
she supported.
“I just don’t do nudity,” Jessica
explained. “I had a shower
scene in Machete and
insisted on wearing
granny panties for it.
The editors digitally
removed my
clothes later!”

Family Time
At home, Jessica loves playing with her daughters, spending
quiet time with her husband, furnishing her home with older, safer
materials she finds on Craigslist, and entertaining family and friends.
She’s an accomplished chef who regularly likes to throw together
delicious meals for small gatherings at her home. After taking cooking
lessons at an Indian restaurant, she says she loves to spice things up
and experiment with different recipes, tastes and textures. “Pizza
night” is also popular, as Jessica and Cash have their own pizza oven
in the backyard and love to make the dough from scratch with a
selection of toppings.
“The pizza oven is a beast and takes four hours to heat up, but it’s
really, really fun,” said Jessica. “Cash is in charge of the oven, and I
spread out all the ingredients so that everyone can make whatever
they like. Nothing makes me happier than making an amazing,
healthy meal for my family and friends. I swear that it’s how
I unwind!”

projects and information about limiting toxic exposure,

“Fat Burning”
What does
BS Clinical Nutrition,
National Educator for Garden of Life.
really mean?
He’ll tell you a little about the role protein plays in
helping you reshape your body:
Here’s a great analogy to explain it. Your body is like a car, and its
engine runs on fuel. The fuel comes from the foods you eat. Right?
Well, more specifically, there are three “grades” of fuel—just like at
the pump. With gasoline, we call these, “Regular, Plus and High Test”.
But when it comes to food, the three sources of energy are all “
macronutrients”—protein, carbohydrates and fats.
In short, Protein = High Test.
When you consume protein, your body gets an
energy source that is—by its very nature—sustained
release. Proteins contain four calories per gram; so do
carbohydrates; and fats have 9 calories per gram. But
the way that the energy (calories) is used inside of the
body is quite different among these three.
Fats are a source of readily available energy. The body
uses what it needs quickly and then converts the rest
into storage—like a rainy day fund. Carbohydrates
(especially simple carbs) are pretty similar. They provide
a quick burst of energy for the body, and then the
leftovers go into the same account for storage. With
both fats and carbohydrates, the body is pretty efficient
26
www.GardenofLife.com
When your body’s metabolism is
burning calories at a faster rate than your mouth
is taking them in, the body dips into its “rainy day”
fund—fat. The stored fat becomes your source of
metabolic fuel = fat burning.
when processing them. Efficiency might seem like a
good thing . . . but in this case, it means that your body
doesn’t have to work too hard or too long to make use
of the calories. Less work = burning less fuel.
Proteins are different. To digest protein your body has
to work hard. It’s slow work and, thus, the energy your
body derives from the protein is used over a longer
period of time. That’s why you feel fuller—longer—after
eating high-protein foods.
Simply put, the digestion and metabolization of protein
in the body is such an energy-requiring process—it’s a
thermogenic and fat-burning activity in and of itself!

There are two types of fiber: insoluble and
soluble. Insoluble fiber keeps everything
moving well—and quickly—through your
body’s plumbing (helps with regularity),
while soluble fiber pulls into itself water
and actually turns to gel during digestion.
This slows your body’s digestion of food,
which can be a big benefit to blood glucose
levels (by reducing those quick rises in blood
glucose after a meal).
Another benefit of fiber is that
it adds bulk to help make you
feel full.
When we formulated RAW Fit, we
incorporated a healthy blend of soluble and
insoluble fiber from RAW organic seeds and
fruits. USDA Certified Organic RAW, coldmilled flaxseeds add a wonderful blend of
antioxidants, known as lignans. In addition,
flax is one of the riches sources of omega3s. When it comes to fiber, RAW organic
flaxseeds are high in insoluble fiber. One
of the most exciting nutritional discoveries
we made when creating RAW Fit was the
RAW Organic African Baobab fruit. The
Baobab tree is totally sustainable, growing
wild throughout the continent. Its fruit is a
nutritional wonder, extraordinarily high
in fiber—almost all being soluble fiber.
RAW Fit Helps
You Avoid Pitfalls
So, let’s make this part simple.
You’ve heard it before: if the
food in your pantry came in
a can, box, bag or packaged
with a shelf-life longer than
the age of your oldest child—
get rid of it.
The more processed, sugary,
high-carbohydrate foods you
eat, the more you crave.
These foods are high glycemic—
they cause your blood sugar to
rise and fall quickly. They give
you a rush of instant energy, but
look at what else they do.

•c

(part of why they initially
make you feel so good).
• r educe your muscles’
performance at straining
tasks (e.g. workouts).
And the worst part is that
. . . high sugar foods are
addictive. When we created
RAW Fit, we knew it had to
be a low glycemic index food
supplement.
RAW Fit has a low GI index of 24.
We also structured the entire RAW Fit Jump-Start program to focus
on low glycemic index foods as its backbone. Some of the benefits
of a Low GI diet include:
• Low GI foods create smaller rises in blood sugar after a meal.
• Low GI diets support weight loss, lowering the amount of fat in
the blood.
• Low GI diets can help your body increase its sensitivity to
insulin, while absorbing and using it more efficiently.

Rex Jones
RAW Fit is the only high-protein weight
loss supplement available with 400mg of
RAW Svetol®—a clinically researched green
coffee bean extract.
Let me Introduce you to Rex
Jones to tell you something
new about an old (ancient)
herbal secret…
Here’s Why:
Raw, unroasted green coffee beans contain
a powerful high-antioxidant polyphenol
called chlorogenic acid. The cholorogenic
acid in RAW Svetol® has been clinically
shown to support the body’s natural
process to metabolize sugar (glucose). In
fact, Svetol® has been the
subject of six studies, and
12
one produced the following

RAW Svetol worked
because it supported the

body’s natural ability to
metabolize sugars rather
0
than to convert them into fat
storage—helping produce
weight loss. What’s more, it did so
without having any stimulant effects
because the fresh, unripe green coffee
bean is naturally decaffeinated.†

2. RAW Organic
Cinnamon
RAW Fit was formulated with RAW
food-created chromium and organic
cinnamon. Cinnamon has long been prized
for its ability to support metabolism
and help maintain healthy blood sugar.
While traditional medicines and ancient
diets, including Ayurveda, have included
cinnamon for its “warming” qualities,
modern science continues to study
the effects of cinnamon. Cinnamon
helps by slowing the emptying of the
stomach, which in turn, helps reduce large
fluctuations in blood sugar levels after
eating. Additionally, cinnamon supports
healthy metabolism of blood glucose.

During my years of experience dealing with herbals, I’ve

3. RAW Food-Created Chromium
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that’s so
important to our body’s health that there is a
recommended daily allowance. It’s called “essential”
because of its role in the metabolism of fats and
carbohydrates, including sugar. Chromium is found
naturally in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as
well as corn, broccoli, many whole grains, apples
and some meats. Our chromium is RAW, whole
food-created.
4. RAW Organic Ashwagandha
We also gave RAW Fit a significant dose—300mg
per serving—of our RAW organic Ashwagandha to deliver meaningful
support in the fight against stress-related carbohydrate cravings.†
When your body is under stress, it releases the hormone cortisol—
which in turn drives cravings for more sugar—or carbohydrates. We
included RAW organic Ashwagandha in RAW Fit to help with those
stress-related food cravings. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a
flowering shrub whose roots have been used in Ayurvedic medicine
for over 5,000 years. In fact, Ashwagandha is one of the most widely
used Indian medicinal plants in the world—so it must be doing
something right!
In Western medicine, we call this an “adaptogenic” herb, meaning
it helps your body cope with many different stress factors.
Modern medicine continues to examine the beneficial effects of
Ashwagandha. In a Gold Standard, placebo-controlled clinical study
performed in India on a group of 64 adults all under stress, taking
300mg of RAW organic Ashwagandha twice daily substantially
reduced the participants’ cortisol levels. The RAW Organic
Ashwagandha helped the participants manage their stress and the
stress-related cravings they were dealing with. That’s why we made it
a part of RAW Fit.†

Do Calories Count:
When we designed RAW Fit, one of our essentials was the
overall calorie count. As much as people like to dress it up,
the simple fact is that calories do count. The math is simple,
really. To lose weight you must take in fewer calories than
your body needs on a daily basis.
Popular theories related to the types of food you consume,
the time of day you eat them, and the way you combine
them abound. Some people feel physically better eating a
vegetarian diet, while others prefer the rewards they derive
from a vegan lifestyle. Many find themselves drawn to a
Paleo diet that incorporates simple, healthful foods from
all food groups and deemphasizes processed and refined,
high-GI items in their diet.

Have you heard the old saying that success is “90%
perspiration, 10% inspiration”? Well, our experts agree
that when it comes to weight loss, the ratios for success
are more like this:
80% = FOOD & 20% = EXERCISE
Yes. What you take in matters that much! So, what does
that say about the importance of daily exercise? Not
enough. You see, the ratios above reflect what we believe
is the essential formula for weight loss. However, when it
comes to Extraordinary Health—your real-life goals—daily
exercise takes on a whole new significance.
Exercise and physical activity are a great way to feel
better, gain health benefits and have fun. As a general
goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every
day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness
goals, you may need to exercise more. Do something you
enjoy—get outside and walk, bike, jog, swim, jump rope—
just move! Remember to check with your doctor before
starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any
health concerns.

The key to long-term success is perseverance. The RAW
Fit Jump-Start Plan is your key to getting started. You
know you can do this—it’s only five days of focused
effort. Once you start seeing the results, you’ll feel elated,
motivated and energized to build on your success.
RAW FIT
JUMP-START SECRET #7
P E R SE V E R A N C E
Perseverance is not the same as denial. It’s about healthy
choices and moderation. Our sample menu on page 25 is
designed to help you organize your meals and make your
own plan. But build on it. Find ways—especially on your
“off” days—to integrate small portions of your favorite
foods. Small servings, small bites, eat slowly and chew
well. Avoid processed, packaged and convenience foods.
Eat more natural, fresh and “real” foods—ideally organic.
After your five-day jump start, adjust your daily menu
to one serving of RAW Fit daily. For more information,
please visit www.gardenoflife.com/rawfit.
After the 5-Day Jump Start—What Now?
So now that you’ve completed the five-day Jump-Start Plan
and you are feeling energized, we recommend that you start
to eat a little more food. Once again, be sure to focus on
eating real foods, fresh foods, ideally healthy organic whole
foods—avoiding highly processed and packaged foods that
are high in sugar, salt and artificial ingredients.
One serving of RAW Fit for breakfast will boost your
metabolism and help balance your blood sugar and get you
started on the right track every day. During the rest of the day
you should eat regularly—there are no set rules—however you
should eat at least three meals spread throughout the day.
And of course be careful to eat small portions. By eating fresh
whole foods that are naturally filling and lower in calories, you
will continue to lose weight!
Please check out www.gardenoflife.com/rawfit for a sample
menu and recipe ideas. Remember, when you are on-the-go
and don’t have time for a proper meal, be sure to have packets
of RAW Fit on hand to keep you nourished, satisfied and to
keep your metabolism burning calories.
And Be Sure to Keep Your Body Moving!

Organic Farming
No doubt you’ve heard of organic
farming, but how is it
different from conventional
farming—and how does it
benefit you, your family, your
health and our earth?
Organic farming is becoming more and more prevalent, and that’s a good
thing, too, because our lives, health and planet could be at stake otherwise.
Yes; organic farming is that important.
Before we get started on our “Organic Farming 101,” however, you’ll
want to know that the undisputed worldwide leader in all things organic
is an organization called the International Federation of Organic Agriculture
Movements (IFOAM). IFOAM sets the international definition for organic
agriculture:
Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health
of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles
adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic
agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment
and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.
That’s a bit complicated, so let’s break it down.
Essentially, Organic Agricultural
Practices are all about establishing
“long-term sustainability.” In agriculture,
sustainability is measured by the farmer’s
impact on soil, water, air, biodiversity and
GMOs (nonproliferation).
First up is soil. When you think about
healthy food, you probably think about its
nutrient content. Even more basic than
that, however, is where those nutrients
originated—in the soil where the plant
grew. In order to grow healthy, productive,
high-yield crops, all farmers—organic and
conventional—fight two battles. The first
is to ensure that soil is fertile, or rich in
nutrients. The second is preventing erosion
of those nutrients and erosion of the soil
itself. You see, if the fields aren’t properly
tended, then the soil depletes over time and
34
www.GardenofLife.com
is transported away by harvesting machines.
Conventional farmers address soil
enrichment through advanced synthetic
chemical fertilizers that add nitrogen,
potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium
and sulfur. Invented during the Industrial
Revolution, these chemicals are continually
“perfected” by large corporate agricultural
conglomerates that sell them—and that’s
a problem because they’re loaded with
toxins. In fact, there are over 150 known
toxins applied to soil through these chemical
fertilizers, and these acid-treated chemicals
“burn” the soil, creating a highly acidic
environment.
By contrast, organic farmers ally
themselves with Mother Nature and plant
cover crops that nourish the soil while plants
grow, depositing nitrogen, phosphorous and
other vital minerals. Likewise,
organic farmers allow these
crops, once harvested, to
compost into the soil, which
adds extra nutrient density during
their decomposition.
What’s more is
that weed controls
used on organic farms are
also natural—minimizing weeds
so that they don’t compete
with crops for vital soil
nutrients. This method, of
course, requires more time
and careful attention, such
as tilling the soil well between
every harvest and planting
to ensure weed root
systems are fully
The bottom line is that organic farmers
work with nature, not against it.
broken up. Additionally, an organic farmer
rotates field crops, knowing that certain
weeds are not able to grow with certain
crops. He may also lay mulch or even a
black tarp over his ground so that the sun
will “bake” the weeds out of the soil.
By contrast, a conventional farmer’s goal
is to entirely eliminate weeds from his
field by applying powerful (and often toxic)
chemical treatments.
The same holds true for pest control.
Conventional farmers apply various toxic
pesticides to their crops. In fact, over
one billion tons of pesticides are used on
conventional U.S. crops each year, but
those pesticides don’t necessarily work and
they don’t stay just where they’re applied.
Cornell entomologist David Pimentel
says, “It has been estimated that only 0.1%
of applied pesticides reach the target pests,
leaving the bulk of the pesticides (99.9%)
to negatively impact the environment.”
On the other hand, organic farmers once
again use nature to their advantage by
using predatory insects, such as ladybugs,
to eat the invaders that threaten food
crops. Additionally, organic farmers find
that crop rotation helps control pests on
certain fields, but that planting companion
crops can be even more powerful. For
example, organic tomato farmers often
plant organic garlic bulbs in their tomato
fields to control aphids.
Then there are the topics of water and
air—both precious, limited resources—
and organic vs. conventional farming.
Conventional farming and its chemicals
severely pollute our water and air—
threatening us and our earth in the process.
Organic farming, however, seeks to stop
pollution of our water and air, thereby
preserving our planet’s resources. One way
organic farmers do this is by planting crops
indigenous to their region—crops that
thrive in their natural climates, resulting in
water use that fits their environment.
Organic farming also safeguards our
environment and health now—and for
future generations—but conventional
farming does not. That leads us specifically
to the topics of biodiversity and GMOs.
In the last forty years, farming has gone
from a competitive agri-business involving
primarily small, family-owned farms with
much biodiversity to an industry dominated
by only a few pharmaceutical/chemical
corporations—Monsanto, DuPont,
Syngenta, Bayer, Dow and BASF—also
known as the “Big Six” who have pushed
genetically engineered (GE) seeds and
crops as well as genetically modified (GM)
foods on our world.
Monsanto executive Robert Fraley,
quoted in Farm Journal, says “What you’re
seeing is not just a consolidation of seed
companies; it’s really a consolidation of the
entire food chain.”
Unfortunetely, biodiversity continues
to dwindle, even as farming operations
consolidate and GE seeds become the
standard. GE-seed-tailored herbicides are
now sold as package deals to conventional
farmers—and GE seeds often don’t
regenerate from year to year, causing
farmers’ dependency on to grow.
Some estimates suggest that up to 80
percent of the land planted with major
field crops in the U.S. now contains GE
traits owned or licensed by Monsanto—a
sure sign that biodiversity is disappearing.
Truth be told, scientists have observed that
in the last 10 years, the earth has lost over
10 million species. GM seeds are designed
to be aggressive, to multiply faster than
organic seeds and to push out organic
seeds when they compete for the same
environment.
The result? The other species become
extinct in the GE seed’s wake, leading to
much less biodiversity and many more
GM crops.
In short, conventional farming is a
perfect storm for environmental fallout,
food insecurity and potential future
complications. Negative impacts on the
soil, air, water and biodiversity are also
at great risk.
Organic farming, however, guards us,
our families, our health and our world—
now and for generations to come.
There is a lot at stake, and organic
farming is key to a healthy future for
all of us.

An Ounce of Prevention with
Chia Seeds and Flaxseeds
It’s said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so
take a look at what an ounce of chia seeds and an ounce of flaxseeds
provide for you!
By now you probably know that chia seeds and flaxseeds are
incredibly good for you—especially USDA Certified Organic chia
seeds and flaxseeds.
For starters, chia seeds and flaxseeds are the richest plant sources
of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s, of course, support healthy
inflammation levels, cardiovascular health, eye health, brain power,
healthy skin, hair and nails—plus additional benefits. What’s more
is that our bodies can’t make omega-3s, so they have to come from
our diet. We need ample amounts of them, too, because omega-3s
are the impetus behind making new cells and regulating a variety of
processes in the body. Unfortunately, however, most people don’t get
enough omega-3s from their diet, but the good news is that just one
ounce of either chia seeds or flaxseeds provides healthy amounts of
plant-based omega-3s.
But that’s not all that these seeds contribute. Chia seeds and
flaxseeds have no cholesterol and are packed with both soluble and
insoluble fiber promoting healthy digestion and regularity. That’s
important, too, since most of us typically. . .get only about half the
fiber we should each day. Athletes love chia because it helps them
stay better hydrated during exercise due to chia’s hydrophilic—or
water-loving—nature. Another advantage to chia’s hydrophilic
attribute is that it absorbs up to 12 times its weight and expands to
help curb your appetite.
Additionally, chia seeds and flaxseeds are packed with
antioxidants, which are powerhouses that take destructive free
radicals and convert them to harmless waste products that
the body can eliminate before any damage is done. In short,
antioxidants act as scavengers to help keep the body’s cells, tissues
and overall health intact.
To top it all off, chia and flax also contain protein, vitamins
and minerals, including iron, zinc, potassium, calcium and
magnesium. Incidentally, we don’t always hear a lot about
magnesium, but it’s needed by every cell in the body and for over
300 bodily biochemical reactions. The problem is that 60 percent
to 80 percent of us don’t get enough magnesium in our diets.
Fortunately, these amazing seeds can help solve the magnesium
shortfall we generally experience.
And while all of these benefits to chia seeds and flaxseeds
are amazing, you’ll want to be sure that you choose USDA
Certified Organic chia seeds and flaxseeds. Why USDA Certified
Organic? Simply put, unless your chia seeds and flaxseeds are
USDA Certified Organic, then you’re probably getting toxins
such as chemical pesticides, GMOs and more. And if chia seeds
and flaxseeds—or any other products, for that matter—start by
being grown with chemical pesticides or other toxins, then those
impurities ultimately get to you. And no one wants that.
The truth is that USDA Certified Organic is the assurance
you can count on for purity, due to the numerous standards and
checkpoints in place every step along the way.

Detox:
A Great Way to Make a Fresh Start
by Terry Willard, Cl. H., Ph. D.
This means a number of dietary changes and an
Detoxification, or cleansing, is one of the basic
foundations of good health and natural healing.
increase of fluid and supplement intake for 12 days.
Most of us have considered cleansing and know
Not surprisingly, a good detox program doesn’t allow
we could stand to benefit from it, but we just keep
for any flour products (cakes, cookies, breads, pasta,
putting it off and continue to bombard our bodies
etc.); dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.);
with greasy foods, fats, alcohol and sweets. We

often complain about how tired we feel and notice
etc.); dried fruits; processed foods or preservatives.
The key to making your detoxification experience
that we’ve put on a few extra pounds, but we
a success is to keep it as easy as possible for you
keep promising ourselves that things will change.
Will that change be next week? Next month?
Next year? Unfortunately, things rarely ever do
change, and we get back into our usual routines.
Don’t you think it’s
time you finally take charge of
your health, cleanse your body
and make a fresh start?
If so, a great way to start anew is through
detoxification. In fact, a good detox program
cleanses the intestinal tract, the urinary
tract, the liver, gallbladder, the blood and the
lymphatic system. Talk about a clean sweep!
Proper detoxification should also include a
wholesome diet focused on alkaline-forming
foods as well as the consumption of lots of pure
water and moderate exercise.
The advantage of a detox diet or cleansing
program is that you can eat like royalty—as
long as what you eat is primarily alkalineforming foods. You may already know that all
foods can be classified as acid forming, neutral
or alkaline forming. The typical modern diet
is weighted heavily on the acidic side due to
processed grains, conventional meats, sugars
and unhealthy fats, but that leads to the body
becoming more acidic. That’s a problem, too.
When the body is more acidic, it adversely
affects our cells, bodily organs and more.
The truth is that the body prefers a more
alkaline state, but that’s not where most of us
land. And since many health problems result
from our bodies being overly acidic (90 percent
of people), a good detoxification program
addresses the acid-alkaline balance of food.

to manage your eating. For your convenience,
the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox kit comes with
a complete meal plan, dietary suggestions—
including those alkaline-forming foods—to help
ensure that you get the most out of the 12-day
program. Simply put, it doesn’t get any easier
than this.
You may be wondering what happens during
detoxification. The liver, kidneys and intestinal
tract—the primary organs of detoxification—play
major roles. The liver filters the blood to remove
large toxins; it synthesizes and secretes bile,
which is full of cholesterol and fat-soluble toxins;
and it has an enzyme system that disassembles
unwanted chemicals. Some of the built-up toxins
are neutralized and excreted in the urine and
feces, while other toxins are stored in fat and
bone tissues, but need to be dealt with as well.
Likewise, the skin and lungs participate—to some
degree—in the elimination of toxins.
A quality detox should also contain
supplements meant to actively cleanse the blood,
intestinal tract, kidneys, liver and lymphatic
system. These supplements, along with the diet,
encourage the body to release waste materials
and toxins that have accumulated in the body
since the last cleanse. A full-body cleanse can
help to eliminate heavy metals, chemical toxins,
microbial compounds and the breakdown
products of protein metabolism.

detoxification?

nearly $400 Billion of total farming business is conducted by
corporate farming conglomerates—“factory farms” that harm
our environment and produce mass crops full of chemicals and
GMOs, with little or no biodiversity. In fact, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture says that the U.S. had 6.8 million farms in 1935,
but has only about 2 million today. Yet, more farming is going
on than ever by factory farms—and they’re crowding out
family-owned farms.
It’s sad, but true. In fact, the American family farm

curtain!
by Rhonda Price
Whether it’s Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Thor, the Incredible Hulk,
Wonder Woman or Captain America, fans worldwide love superheroes
and pour billions of dollars into the thriving comic book movie industry.
I’ve always favored Iron Man over the rest of the pack because he’s
the only one who seems like he could be real. Instead of acquiring his
supernatural powers from a radioactive spider bite, gamma radiation,
a super soldier serum or a birthright from the gods, Iron Man is the
brainchild of billionaire reformed arms dealer and robotics genius Tony
Stark. Without Stark’s ingenuity, there is no iconic red and gold suit of
armor—although Ironman 3 may challenge this belief.
50
www.GardenofLife.com
I’ve watched Robert Downey, Jr., brilliantly
play the role of Stark and his alter ego in the first
two Iron Man blockbusters and wondered how he
managed to beef up for the physically demanding
scenes. I figured there must be some health secrets
lurking behind the set, which is why we jumped at
an opportunity several months ago to join the Iron
Man 3 cast and crew for an afternoon of filming in
Miami. Located less than an hour from our Garden
of Life® headquarters in West Palm Beach, we
grabbed several boxes of supplements (including
a bottle of Vitamin Code® RAW Iron™ that I
fantasized about offering to Iron Man) and headed
for a discreet location tucked away in downtown
Miami’s arts district.
Premiering in theaters May 3, a majority of
the Iron Man 3 scenes were shot at EUE/Screen
Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, with
additional filming in Florida. When we arrived, we
joined our host, John, and were given a quick tour.
The set was a massive labyrinth of activity with
construction workers tearing down walls, a catering
company setting up for lunch, and stage
hands bustling around with plants and other
props. Suddenly, we heard a deafening blast,
but John calmly explained it was the sound
crew testing explosives in a garbage can! We
assumed lots of things would be blown to
smithereens since that’s a trademark of any
Iron Man film, but John couldn’t confirm
because there were strict orders not to give
away any important details about the plot.
After a walk around the set, everyone
paused for a lunch break, which was no
small affair with 200 cast and crew members
ready to chow down. We were amazed at
the endless smorgasbord of food with tables
piled high with offerings to appeal to any
taste or diet. There were several pasta dishes
that seemed to be a hit with the teamsters
and construction workers, an impressive
salad bar decorated with a carved Iron Man
3 watermelon, and a mind-boggling array of
side dishes. Outdoors there were two chefs
grilling fish and chicken, while another was
busily slicing prime rib. When we asked John
if this was a typical lunch spread, he said it
was the norm, but added that five or 10 years
ago there would not have been quite as many
healthy choices available.
Shooting resumed promptly after lunch
with a stern warning to turn off cell phones
under penalty of death. I was thrilled to see
Robert Downey, Jr. in full Tony Stark mode
as well as cast mates Guy Pearce, Rebecca
Hall and Jon Favreau piled into an elevator
with a few extras. The same scene was shot
numerous times with everyone squeezing out
of the elevator between takes so the sound
and lighting crews could make adjustments.
For a second, I thought I saw
Robert Downey, Jr.’s twin during
a lighting check and wondered if
it was a stunt double. John said
the look-a-like was a stand-in
so the actor didn’t have to wait
tediously under the lights, but
all I could ponder was how
much this guy was getting
paid to look like the star.
Throughout the filming,
any time the director yelled
“cut” and stopped shooting,
Downey immediately
reeled off clever one-liners
that kept everyone in stitches. When
shooting resumed, he would announce, “It’s
on like Konkey Dong!” and more laughter
erupted. I was so absorbed in the scenes that
I didn’t notice at first when Downey was
standing next to me during a short break.
Up close, he looked strong, sinewy, and
extremely handsome in an expensively cut
black jacket befitting his billionaire character.
Because Stark is supposed to be a bit of a
geeky inventor, he was wearing thick, Coke
bottle looking glasses and was still exuding
sexiness in an effortless, debonair way.
While I silently contemplated how
Downey managed to lose 25 pounds to play
Sherlock Holmes in between Iron Man
films, John introduced him to me and I was
temporarily paralyzed when he said, “it’s nice
to meet you.” Luckily, I spotted a name tag
on his jacket from the scene that said, “Hello!
YOU KNOW MY NAME” and I blurted
out that I certainly did! John told him that
we were from Garden of Life, the company
with all the raw supplements, and Downey
listened to this like it was the most interesting
thing in the world. We also talked about the
hotel where he was staying in Miami and
how he hated to leave because he’d love to
have more time in Paradise. All too soon
the director called for him again and he was
whisked back to the elevator for several more
hours of shooting.
It’s Not Easy Being Iron Man
Although it takes loads of energy and
stamina for actors to shoot the same scenes
for days, it’s nothing compared to the hours
Downey spends working out so that he can
have the strength required to play Iron Man.
Consider that Downey is 5’ 8” tall and weighs
about 170 pounds, while the Iron Man suit
weighs 40 pounds. It’s not the same thing as
Spiderman suiting up in a flame-retardant
leotard that is feather light by comparison.
Downey also does most of his own stunts,
which is why production was shut down
briefly on the set in North Carolina when
he injured his ankle. Apparently, it’s not
easy being Iron Man at the age of 47, but he
pulls it off marvelously with the help of an
entourage of massage therapists, a personal
trainer, a chef, martial arts instructors and
a yoga teacher to keep him in shape. No
matter how much assistance he has from
Team Downey, the training to prepare for the
role is brutal and consists of varied workouts
created by Brad Bose, an exercise physiologist
who gave him his chiseled, rock-hard bod for
all three films.
“I need a lot of support,” Downey said,
perhaps alluding to the fact that he has had
some health struggles and personal demons to
deal with in the past. “Life is really hard, and
I see it as a really cool survival game.”
With games in mind, Bose designed a
series of challenging workouts specifically
with Downey’s character in mind. Explaining
that Iron Man is not a typical superhero with
bulging muscles, the goal was to get his body
working at peak performance but not overly
muscular. Some of the unusual exercises
Downey practiced included whipping around
fire hoses filled with sand and water, hurling
SUV tires, and handling Indian Clubs that
resembled weighted juggling pins. He also
trained on stationary equipment, lifted
weights, and put some genuine iron into his
workouts by lifting kettlebells. Some days
were designated for high intensity circuit
training, while other days included an upper
body routine of pull-ups, dips, bench presses,
body rows and military presses and a lower
body workout of barbell squats, lunges and
leg presses.
During training, Downey stuck to a
high-protein diet and consumed about 3,000
calories a day. He also practiced Wing Chun
Kung Fu, a martial arts discipline, and stayed
flexible with the help of a yoga instructor. His
enormous effort and commitment were for
the sole purpose of making Iron Man 3 the
best film for multitudes of fans.
“We need to leave it on the field,” said
Downey, who has done everything to show
that he, Tony Stark and Iron Man are all
forces to be reckoned with.

Health Coach Chris Wark
Shows Why All Brands Are Not Created Equal
Almost 10 years ago, Chris Wark never gave
much thought to his diet, his stressful lifestyle
or his overall health. Self-employed as a
Memphis real estate investor, the then 26-yearold poured all of his energy into his job and
making a comfortable home for himself and his
wife. When he was diagnosed with stage III
colon cancer in 2003, it was like a sucker punch
that came out of nowhere.
“Colon cancer, or actually any kind of cancer,
did not run in my
family,” he said.
“There was no way
to figure out how this
could have happened
to me.”
Chris opted
for surgery. As
he recovered, he
52

instinctively felt he should stick to natural
treatments that he believed would be better for
his health.
“I felt very strongly that I did not want to
tear down my body with chemicals,” he said.
Chris embarked on a raw, vegan diet for 90
days and then worked with a naturopath to add
clean meat to his diet. He was also inspired by
reading Garden of Life® founder Jordan Rubin’s
book The Maker’s Diet, which recommends
by Rhonda Price
unprocessed, organic foods and eliminating
environmental toxins. Chris gradually became
a student of alternative medicine and healing
foods. Most of all, he was meticulous about
scrutinizing every single thing he put into his
body, which meant poring over product labels
and nutrition panels.
“I believed it was possible to restore my
health, and I got better,” said Chris, who is
36 years old now and thriving—as are his two
young daughters. “But through my experience,
I learned there are a lot of people looking for
information. I decided the best thing I could do
was to share with others what I had learned.”
Today, Chris maintains his own health
blog and is also a public speaker, lecturing at
smoothie bars, churches, L’ecole Culinaire
Culinary School, Whole Foods Market and
many health and wellness events.
I felt very strongly
that I did not want
to tear down my body
with chemicals. - Chris Wark
He makes numerous appearances on radio, television and the Internet, inspiring
countless people to take control of their health and reverse disease with a radical
transformation of diet and lifestyle.
“There’s no doubt that the demand for natural therapies is exploding, and I
can see it from the 70,000 hits per month on my blog.” For more information
about Chris, visit his web site at www.chrisbeatcancer.com.
While regularly sharing information, health tips and product reviews on his
web site, Chris noticed that many people asked him questions about protein
powders. At the time, he was using three different brands—Vega, Sun
Warrior and Garden of Life® RAW Protein—rotating all three. But one
day, he placed all three canisters side by side, studied the nutrition panels
and listed his findings on a spreadsheet. Surprisingly, he discovered there
were significant differences among the three leading brands.
“The good news is that all three are plant based, gluten free and
sweetened with stevia,” he said. “Apparently, Vega uses five sources
of protein, Sun Warrior uses three and Garden of Life sources theirs
from 13 organic sprouted grains. But on closer inspection, what
jumped out at me is that Vega and Sun Warrior protein sources, and
even the products themselves, are not all USDA Certified Organic
as I had assumed. In fact, only Garden of Life RAW Protein is
USDA Certified Organic and non-GMO verified by the NonGMO Project, which is a big deal to me. I think if your product
is not USDA Certified Organic, it’s as if you’re not holding
yourself to any sort of standard at all.”
Chris struggled for a while on the notion of value.
Trying to compare the products was tricky as each used a
different sized scoop. So, he leveled the playing field by
analyzing the products on a per-ounce cost basis.
He was shocked when he realized that
ounce-for-ounce Garden of Life RAW Protein
was the best bargain.
Something else that Chris took note of was the
source for vitamins and minerals in each product.
“After all, I’m going out of my way to eat healthy,
RAW, organic plant-based nutrition. Why would I
knowingly corrupt that with synthetic chemical vitamins?”
Again, he saw Garden of Life RAW Protein pull ahead of the pack.
After learning the RAW truth about the products, Chris is
no longer rotating brands these days. He sticks to RAW Protein
every day, including a giant smoothie containing coconut and
hemp seeds that he makes for his lunch. He also makes a RAW
Protein “eggnog” smoothie that he whips up for a recovery drink
after workouts.
“Labels can be very confusing,” he concludes. “I blog constantly
about these issues. It’s my way of helping my readers learn how to
read a nutrition label for what it does—and does not—say. ”

Employees are
Stepping
It Up
The most common question you hear nowadays in the hallways
of Garden of Life is, “How many steps do you have?” Why? Because
GoL employees are proudly displaying their pedometers and are
striving to be more active throughout the day.
The goal is for each employee to build
up to 10,000 steps per day. This number is
a benchmark for daily activity, but it’s also
the guideline that has become commonly
agreed upon for improving health and
decreasing risk of heart disease.
“We are the fastest-growing
company in the supplement space,
and the majority of the innovation and
creativity comes from brainstorming
and intense collaboration—while
seated. We’re in meetings, on conference
calls or working at our computers; so now
we’re making a conscious effort to move
and to reach that step goal,” says Teresa Miller,
Senior Director of Human Resources and Wellness.
Garden of Life president, Brian Ray, is one of the biggest
champions of getting people more active. “It’s important to me
56

that our employees are the healthiest they can be, so we’ve launched
our ‘Extraordinarily Healthy Employees’ wellness initiative,” Ray
states. In order to lead by example, Ray can frequently been seen with
employees doing a lap or two around the lake—which
is actually a large retention pond that Floridians
affectionately refer to as a lake.
The GoL Wellness Committee
has been charged with creating
customized, exciting programs
and activities to keep employees
energized and engaged, so they
are busy researching treadmill
desks, walking competitions and
healthy nutritional lunch/snack
programs—all of which will
benefit GoL employees.
Miller points out, “Empowering
Extraordinary Health® is one of the
most amazing mission statements. Our
employees understand its importance, and they
are so excited to step it up for their own wellbeing; not just one
step—but 10,000 steps.” Now that’s really stepping it up!
