Housing
•
Designed with proven reliable materials that cater to specific
requirements including cost, solder processes, strength, and color.
Materials used include:
•
Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) - thermoplastic polymer, mechanically
strong, acts as an insulator, heat-resistant up to 200 °C making it
compatible for wave solder and cost sensitive applications
•
DSM Stanyl - high temperature polyamide, highest stiffness and strength,
resists deformation up to 290ºC ideal for lead-free soldering, unmatched
creep resistance for superior pin retention, ideal for IR reflow applications
•
Nylon PA4T - Halogen Free, Specific attributes include excellent
dimensional stability, compatibility with lead free soldering, high stiffness
and mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, high melting point.
•
•
All housing materials are UL 94V-0 flame retardant
Housings are available with materials that can withstand higher
temperatures
These housings are suitable for IR Reflow soldering process where the
entire housing body is subjected to heat
•
Housing color options are available for the following series: RJESE and
RJLSE
7
Shielding
•
•
•
•
•
Amphenol’s shielding provides superior protection
with a conductive metal composite shell surrounding
the connector which prevents Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI), current leakage & crosstalk
Amphenol shielding is made of a copper alloy, plated
with matte tin, nickel or stainless steel with tin dipped
tails
Tin dipping mitigates the propagation of tin whiskers,
which can bridge two adjacent leads and form an
electrical short , also improves the solderability of the
shield
Nickel plated or Stainless Steel Shields without tin
dipping can experience solderability issues
Ferrite filtering is also available to protect against high
frequency EMI

LEDs
•
Amphenol’s Modular Jacks are available with LEDs in a variety color
options for visual feedback, removing the need for additional space typically
required for indicators and reducing component and labor costs by
incorporating LED’s into the connector
•
As an innovation leader, Amphenol has developed, in partnership with its
supplier, a LED that is more robust and better suited for the high
temperature lead free IR reflow solder process with a smaller failure rate
than common LED’s.
10
High Temp LEDs
•
While being subjected to high temperatures during the IR reflow solder
process, regular LEDs are unable to handle the stress caused by the
extreme heat
•
Metal components and epoxy bodies begin to expand and contract at
different rates, resulting in the breakage of electrical bonds
•
Although these LEDs may continue to work after the soldering process,
they have a failure rate of approximately 5%, and malfunctioning will most
likely occur when the RJs are being used by customers, resulting in the
need for costly field repairs.
•
Amphenol has developed a robust LED solution that is able to withstand
the heat of the IR Reflow soldering process.
11
•
The High Performance products from Amphenol are available in
a variety of configurations, including: ultra-low, low and standard
profile designs, EMI shielding, LED’s and tab up orientation of the
mating face.
•
Our design and manufacturing process enables consistent and
reliable performance at a competitive price.
•

Custom PCB Design
At this point in time, the product selection from the competition is limited
with regards to available options and configurations. They currently don’t
offer integrated LEDs for link activity verification, tab up design and often
require special PCB design and/or capacitive compensation components
to be added to achieve intended performance.

23
Integrate vs. Discrete
•
Amphenol partnered with Wurth Electronics to conduct a
comparison between discrete connectors with separate magnetics
and integrated RJ products
•
Test results showed that in certain categories, discrete connectors
with separate magnetics outperform integrated connectors.
•
The Discrete 10G Ethernet circuit included:
– Amphenol Cat6 Receptacle: RJE71-188-1411
– Wurth Electronics Magnetics Package: 749-050-010A
24
Connecters
VS.
+
Integrated 1GB Connector
Consists of a standard RJ45
connector and a magnetic
package in the one unit.
Discrete 1GB Connector
Consists of a standard RJ45
connector with a separate
magnetic package located
elsewhere on the board.
25
Test Setup
•
PAN: N5230C
•
Test frequencies: 1MHz – 500MHz
