r e t or p e R Children Healthcare Women Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Toronto Centre Spring 2015 Your support helps children discover their Jewish identity through Bar /Bat Mitzvah classes and celebrations at CHW Schools in Israel. Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW): Supporting Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada for almost 100 years! President’s Message I can’t believe that I am now the 45th President of CHW Toronto Centre. It is with pride and honour that I accept this position. I am extremely pleased to be working with a very capable and committed group of women who form the Executive Committee. They are: Tali Baum (Vice President), Gayla Schwartz (Secretary), Stephanie Caplan (Treasurer), Julie Spira (Fundraising Chair), Brondell Shapiro (Annual Campaign Chair) and Elayna Latsky (Immediate Past President). I am also looking forward to working with returning and newly appointed Board members who have been assigned to our various committees: Mentorship, Membership, Fundraising and the recently formed Resource & Technology Committee. With the arrival, finally, of spring, so begins the Annual Campaign. Chapters are in full swing with their fundraisers and there is such a variety of events. Please let the office know the date of your event so that I or another Executive member can attend or if you need any assistance. The CHW office staff and the Executive team are here to help you. A sincere thank you to all chapters for your exciting fundraising efforts. The Annual Campaign is also the time when our members are asked to make a personal donation to CHW. These donations are what help support our projects in Israel and Canada. Our most recent projects are the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center and the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. When you receive your pledge card, please join me in making your personal Annual Campaign donation. With our new Executive team and the hardworking and generous members of Toronto Centre, I know that we can accomplish great things for CHW. Warm Regards, Fran Luborsky CHW Toronto President 2015 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards Mazel Tov to the following CHW Toronto volunteers for their 2015 Ontario Volunteer Service Award recognition: • • • 20 Years ~ Tova Train, Tamid Chapter 10 Years ~ Sheila Rother, Machar Chapter 5 Years ~ Rayna Schwartz, Rimon Chapter Welcome to our new Executive Team! Tali Baum – Vice President Tali is a member of Tamid Chapter and has served in all the executive roles in the chapter. She has been very active in the chapter’s signature event, “Girls’ Night Out.” As a Board member since 2007, she has helped organize many city-wide events including Co-Chairing the One Campaign featuring Brigette Gabriel. In her role as Chair of Fundraising for Toronto Centre, Tali was instrumental in re-invigorating the Kroft Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program. She was also the Toronto Chair for the Tribute Gala honouring outgoing National President, Marla Dan. Tali continues to serve on the National Board as a member of the CHW National Leaders Forum. Gayla Schwartz – Secretary Gayla is currently President of Machar Chapter. She is very active in organizing the chapter’s newly acquired fundraiser, “Machar Art Day.” She was also the Annual Campaign Co-Chair for the “Food, Fashion & Flair” event. Gayla is presently a Mentor in the Mentorship Program and has recently become a member of the CHW National Leaders Forum. Stephanie Caplan – Treasurer Stephanie joined Atid Chapter in 2011 after moving to Toronto from Montreal. Her paternal grandmother was a long-standing CHW member in Montreal and Stephanie has continued the tradition. She is Co-Chair of her chapter’s annual “Literary Levee” fundraiser and is also the chapter Treasurer. Stephanie is a former Mentee of the Mentorship Program and is a member of the newly formed Resource & Technology Committee. She is also now a member of the CHW National Leaders Forum. Stephanie’s experience as a chartered accountant will definitely be an asset in her position as Treasurer for Toronto Centre. Julie Spira – Fundraising Chair Julie is a member of Adena-Hanesse Chapter. She was previously an active and longtime member of Nir Galim chapter where she worked as a cashier and did baking for the “Hungarian Tea Room” at the Hadassah-WIZO Bazaar. She also participated in organizing Nir Galim’s annual Chanukah Dinner & Dance. Upon her retirement three years ago, Julie decided to get more involved with CHW and joined the Board. She served as a member of the Annual Campaign Committee for the “Food, Fashion & Flair” event. Brondell Shapiro – Annual Campaign Chair Brondell has been an active member of Adena-Hanesse Chapter since 1965. She has held many positions in her chapter which include President (three times), Youth Aliyah Chair, Bazaar Chair and Programming Co-Chair. Brondell has also served three times as Reporter Editor. She is presently a Mentor in the Mentorship Program and is now a member of the National Leaders Forum. Elayna Latsky – Immediate Past President Elayna is a member of Tamid Chapter. She has been an active member in her chapter’s many events including their main fundraiser, Girls’ Night Out.” She is also a former Mentor of the Mentorship Program. Now that she has finished her term as the 44th President of CHW Toronto Centre, Elayna will continue her involvement with CHW as a Director, holding the position of National Treasurer. From the Executive Coordinator As you read this issue of Reporter, you will be introduced to the new CHW Executive Committee that was installed on March 25. An outstanding team, by the way. In our efforts to coordinate our activities with the National office and CHW centres around the country, we changed the Installation date for this term to March (instead of June). Installations to follow (beginning with the 2016-2018 term) will take place in the fall. Confused yet? It’s actually not so complicated….changing the timing will ensure that we are ‘in sync’ with our national colleagues, having each administration’s term begin and conclude in the fall, at about the same time as CHW’s annual general meeting and elections. But Installation is just one special event that takes place this spring. There are many chapter events on the calendar and all of them are special. We are very impressed with the innovative and creative new events being hosted by our chapters, and we are so proud of our chapter ‘signature events’ that sell out year after year. We hope you will take advantage of the events on offer; we know you’ll find lots of fun in our fundraising! Don’t forget – spring also brings us Annual Campaign. Let’s make this year’s campaign our best yet! Wishing our members and friends a sunny spring and summer. Warm regards, Ellen Ostofsky CHW Toronto Executive Coordinator Join the Growing list of Sustainers CHW Sustainers pledge an annual gift of $1,000 ($83.50 monthly) or more to support Children, Healthcare and Women projects in Israel and Canada. Kroft Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah Project The Kroft Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program lets teens and their families share their good fortune with needy teens in Israel. Gifts to this program provide Israeli teens with the opportunity to experience the joy of their own Bar/ Bat Mitzvah. Each year, hundreds of youth receive lessons, participate in a series of outings and enjoy enrichment classes in preparation for their big day. For more information please contact the CHW Toronto Office at 416.630.8373. “My bat mitzvah was such a special event in my life. All that hard work paid off. I was glad to be able to participate in the Kroft family bat mitzvah program and to help a teenager in Israel enjoy the same experience.” ~ Jaymie Heller “Our family set up this fund in 1999 to help young Israelis who might not otherwise be able to afford a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We have watched this project flourish and are touched by the generosity of each and every donor. We hope you recognize that your gift has enriched young lives at a critical time in their development. We are doubly blessed today as we add the name of our beloved granddaughter Harper Jules Kroft to our fund. Harper, we are so proud of the person you have become. Mazel Tov!” ~ Sharon and Fred Kroft (your Guya and Papa) Harper Kroft (middle) Centre and Chapter Activities Atzmaut Chapter Atzmaut Chapter held another very successful trivia night on November 15, 2014 attended by 100 people. This was by far the most well-attended trivia night ever. With a sold-out crowd, the chapter raised over $2,000 for Children Healthcare and Women. Chaverot Chapter On October 26, 2014, Chaverot’s Chapter held its 3rd annual “Mahjong Madness” event at Earl Bales Community Centre. It was a great success. Good times were had by all, with the proceeds going to CHW’s Women and Children. We look forward to seeing everyone again at this year’s upcoming event. Dor L’ Dor Chapter “I’m proud to donate to CHW in honour of my Bar Mitzvah. I had such an amazing celebration with my family and friends and I’m happy that kids in Israel will have the same opportunity.” ~ Harley Latsky “Celebrating a bar or bat mitzvah is a special time for any family and it is something that every Jewish family who wants to should get to experience. That is why it was so meaningful for us to be part of the Kroft Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah project. As friends of the Kroft family, we are constantly inspired by their generosity and commitment to important causes. It was therefore even more special for our family to be able to contribute to the project in honour of our son Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah.” ~ Elyse Sunshine On February 28, 2015, Dor l’Dor Chapter held their annual event, a Bowing Bash at Bathurst Bowlerama in Toronto. The event was a huge success! 150 bowlers attended and had the opportunity to bid on over 40 fabulous silent auction items including restaurant and entertainment certificates, clothing, household items, and jewelry. Guests spent the evening cosmic bowling while enjoying delicious cupcakes and a candy bar. The chapter raised over $6000! Yasmin Chapter Matthew Zarenda Major Giving CHW provides major giving opportunities with gifts beginning at $10,000 or more. A CHW Women of Valour gift of $10,000 to $100,000 USD goes towards CHW’s commitment to WIZO, such as the schools, daycare centres, women’s centres, and parental hotline. CHW Woman/Man of Distinction encompasses gifts of $10,000 to $50,000 towards CHW’s commitments to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Hadassah Hospital, and the CHW Netanya Technological High School. For information contact Ellen Ostofsky at the Toronto Office at 416.630.8373. Yasmin Chapter got creative recently as they held their first Girls Gone Painting fundraising event. With their larger Girls Gone Glam fundraiser set to be held in November 2015, the girls of Yasmin Chapter decided that they needed a fun night out to get them through the long winter and so Girls Gone Painting was planned. With the help of 2 artists from“PaintNite!” the 60 women attending the event were able to channel their inner creativity to paint a colorful and fun spring scene, as well as take some time to enjoy some delicious desserts and snacks donated by Shortie Bread Girl, Shayna by the Dozen, Mister Produce and Starbucks. Girls Gone Painting raised over $1,000 to help CHW continue their amazing work in both Canada and Israel. We look forward to an even more successful Girls Gone Glam on November 8, 2015 (mark your calendars now!!!) Reporter Gila Chapter On Sunday September 14, 2014, over a dozen women from Gila Chapter took part in a walk at a nearby park and had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying nature. Gila raised over $25,000.00 for our beloved projects in Israel. Our thanks to co-chairs Diane Ehrlick and Joyce Jacobs and to the fundraising efforts of our members. A special shout out goes to Shellianne Bedder Green whose Herculean fundraising efforts allowed us to exceed our goal. Machar & Lev Zahav Chapters On Thursday, November 13, 2014, Machar & Lev Zehav Chapters presented UNCOVERED: Billy Joel & Elton John. The iconic musical catalogues of these two legendary ‘piano men’ came to life in concert. We experienced the music of the director’s wild imagination and theatrical arrangements of some of Canada’s best musical actors from Broadway to Stratford. Once again, we had a SOLD OUT event. This night ROCKED! Stay tuned for our next concert – not to be missed! Shoshana Chapter On Sunday, February 8, 2015, Shoshana Chapter hosted the Third Annual “Chase Away the Winter Blahs...come Play or Learn the Game of Mahj”. It was held at the Earl Bales Community Centre. The attendees had a wonderful time connecting with friends and playing Mahj. Prizes, a 50/50 draw and door prizes added fun to the day. The desserts were fabulous. Thanks to everyone who braved the winter storm to attend. It was a great afternoon! Tinokot Chapter Tinokot Chapter held their first Passover Tulip Sale and Delivery on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Over 300 potted tulips were delivered to friends, family and supporters of CHW Toronto. Mazel Tov to Tinokot Chapter for this very successful chapter initiative. Tamid Chapter Tamid Chapter is thrilled once again their 10th annual Girls Night Out was a huge success. Improv group The National Theatre of the World was the headliner and the laughter of the 350 attendees filled the room. The silent auction was fabulous with a variety of packages; the ladies were rushing to outbid one another to go away with their choices! The 50/50 was given back by the winner to CHW, now that’s tzedakah! Finally, our famous homemade dessert reception was the icing on the cake…each and every baked goodie was delicious. Thanks to all the girls of Tamid and all those in attendance for making this a night to remember! EDITORIAL As I write this message, my mind is bouncing from idea to idea: annual campaign, installation dinner, mentoring, Pesach, CHW mission to Israel. I should tackle them in order. By the time you read this, the campaign will be well underway. CHW has a great team working hard to raise much needed funds for our projects in Israel. If everyone who has never made a contribution could pledge $18, our projects would receive substantial funds. Of course, previous supporters are also needed to continue their donations. Our installation dinner was a lovely event. On Wednesday, March 25 I was formally installed as Annual Campaign Chair even though the amazing team has been hard at work for some time. Orah Magazine has arrived in our homes. Once again, it provides a well written overview of events and people in CHW. Mentoring was featured and I received many compliments from my chapter members; my hat now has trouble fitting! As mentioned, this programme is vital for future leadership in CHW. Finally, the CHW Mission to Israel led by National President Claudia Goldman has been a highlight of spring for me. It has been a wonderful trip. Places I have never visited such as an Israeli air force base on Yom HaZ’karon, home hospitality, a relaxing day at a spa and visits to our projects where we are always treated like royalty; these were part of the mission. Watch for pictures of this wonderful trip next issue!
