Dear customers and partners,
dear members of staff,
Welcome to the latest issue of InForms, which is the
first issue of our magazine to present itself in a slightly
changed form. Since Meusburger is a familiy business
we have merged our staff and customer magazines.
So from now on, this magazine will also include
company internal information and therefore give you
even more insight into Meusburger. We hope you will
continue to enjoy the read and to this end we would
appreciate your feedback or suggestions.
Early in 2010 we will be presenting you with our
new printed catalogue. It contains 41,000 items
on over 800 pages. In addition, there is the new
Meusburger Online and CD catalogue in nine different languages.
The coming year will be full of challenges. Apart
from the new edition of the print catalogue we have
planned some changes in distribution, product planning and production. In order to be prepared for the
future, we will assume the work in our new additional
production and warehousing areas in the spring of
2010.

Ever closer to the customer
Interview with E.M.I. SA in France
In 1969, Eugène Wissler formed
his company for mould making and
plastic injection moulding in Neuwiller. At the beginning Eugène
worked by himself until, later on,
he was supported by his children.
In time his company was taken over
by his son, Jean-Pierre Wissler, who
today employs ten mould making
technicians who work with highly
efficient machinery (5-axis machining). In parallel to this company,
Jean-Pierre formed E.M.I. (Etudes
Moules Injection) in 1995, in order
to develop the processing of plastic
materials. InForms spoke with Managing Director Jean-Pierre Wissler.
InForms: E.M.I. has not been affected by the crisis. What is the recipe
for your success?
It is a long-term oriented policy
which is now bearing fruit and is
based on several elements. A special
advantage is the diversification of
our customers. We have customers in
connection technology and the construction and automotive industries,
as well as, notably, in the renewable
energy sector which ten years ago
was still pretty insignificant but which
we were right to pursue.
The integration of mould making,
injection moulding, assembly and
even warehousing in a single unit
makes it possible for us to offer a
comprehensive service to our customers and is therefore another key
element of our success. When devel-

oping projects together with our customers we can make a valuable contribution right from the start, utilizing
our expertise in mould making and in
injection moulding. This means that
we can offer better technical solutions at a more attractive price. That is
another important element in retaining customers.
Almost 60 % of our products are
exported abroad, particularly to Switzerland and Germany, which in part
is due to the fact that we speak
the language and are familiar with
the culture. So a German-speaking
customer will not have to overcome
a language barrier when doing business with our company. Another clear
we have to come up with technical solutions for our customers when
projects are still in their infancy.
This requires highly qualified personnel as well as strong investment in the
latest technologies. In my opinion,
having a mould making department
within our injection moulding company creates flexibility and the ability
to react to customer requirements,
which means that they have only one
partner to deal with.

Thanks to its ongoing investment
policy, Meusburger has always
offered us innovative products at a
very good price and, in addition,
with very short delivery times. I also
appreciate the responsiveness of
staff of the in-house sales department
who answer our enquiries always
very promptly. Another factor is that
when delivery times are very tight,
Meusburger offers us the complete
machining of our standard moulds.

Intelligent products – added value for the customer
Meusburger extends its product
range. The Mold Stick, pre-drilled
insulation boards, erosion accessories, carriers and stops, flexible
ejector units and flat guide rails are
now listed on the order forms. In
this way, Meusburger takes another
huge step towards an optimised
range of products.
Further to these additions, Meusburger
has also compiled separate documents on ‘special machining’ and
‘machine and jig construction’. In this
way different customer requirements
are met even better than before. You

Pre-drilled thermal insulation boards
Also new in Meusburger´s product
range is a wide variety of pre-drilled
thermal insulation boards to fit all
Meusburger standard moulds. These
allow to disassemble tools without
having to remove the thermal insulation boards. In most cases it is
not necessary to carry out additional
machining of the thermal insulation
boards.
Erosion ancillaries
Numerous electrode blanks made of
graphite and copper are now available for the most widely available
clamping system on the market. This
is in addition to head electrodes and
square bars made from high-quality
spark erosion graphite in different
grain grades.
Mold Stick
2760 The newly developed E 2760
Mold Stick by Meusburger is a
mobile data storage device that can
be mounted in tools and moulds.
All tool-specific data can be stored
directly in the tool, thus avoiding time
consuming searches.
Steel bars
Meusburger offers a comprehensive range of round bars that have
been heat treated for stress-relief
and that can be used for inserts
and cores, as well as in machine
and jig construction. The diameter is peeled, the length sawn
with allowance. Available in nine
different steel grades – now also
in 2083, 2379 and 7131. NEW –
“silver steel” 2210 in h9 quality.

Mould making in Italy
Equipped for the future
On 22 October 2009, UCISAP (the
Italian mould makers association)
in cooperation with Meusburger,
Thermoplay, Vero, Progind and
Valeo organised a meeting under
the title ‘Growth in the mould
making industry’.
The meeting was targeted at interested mould makers and injection
moulding companies. The aim was
to discuss new technologies and
methods with a view to increasing
productivity and competitiveness.

Plates and bars
Top quality has a high priority at
Meusburger, and the grinding
department also takes this very
seriously. Plates ordered by customers are ground to the specified
thickness and flatness. Naturally,
this requires a high degree of accuracy because the quality of the finish also determines the quality of
our customers’ end products.
There are currently 16 members of
staff in the grinding department,
working in different shifts, putting
the finishing touches to Meusburger
products (plates and bars).

Segment grinding
Segment grinding (crosswise grinding) uses a grinding machine in combination with two mobile magnetic
round tables which hold the workpieces with magnetic clamping force.
A rotating ring turns with a circumferential speed of 40 m/s and applies the
desired finish to the steel. The process involves fine adjustments from
the magnetic round table which also
rotates. Workpieces are fitted with
great care and cleanliness to ensure
correct dimensions and the desired
level of flatness – important quality
characteristics at Meusburger.
Precision grinding
Longitudinal grinding is mainly used
for special plates. The high degree
of accuracy and small tolerances
are a pre-requisite for precize further machining at the customers. Another important service is the grinding
of plates with pockets to customer
drawings. This requires absolute accuracy. “At Meusburger, we only despatch workpieces which meet our top
quality standards” says Head of

We ‚mould‘ the new generation
Six new apprentices have joined the team
Meusburger invited all 18 apprentices to a 2-day adventure event
in the Bregenzerwald (Vorarlberg,
Austria). The six new apprentices
were warmly welcomed to the
group. In a number of seminars
and action-packed activities, the
apprentices tested their strength
and defined joint goals.
“Our team introduction days offer
an ideal opportunity for our twelve
existing and six new apprentices to
get to know each other in a congenial atmosphere. In our company we
put a lot of emphasis on team spirit
and good communication between
staff”, comments Peter Nussbaumer,
Head of Apprentice Training, in
reference to the objectives of the
team building activity. There were
a number of challenges that the
promising young lads and their two
tutors had to cope with during those
two days. Climbing guide Eduard
Kumaropulos organised an abseil
and climbing event with the group
at the Rappenfluh in Hittisau, which
required a lot of team spirit and
courage. The next sports activity for
the Meusburger crew involved a visit
to the golf course in Riefensberg,
where the young apprentices were
able to show off their skills with the
small ball.
In the evening, Guntram Meusburger
and Head of Human Resources, Roman
Giesinger, paid the troupe a visit –
bringing along a ready-roasted suckling
pig. This enjoyable barbecue night was
the perfect finish to the first adventure-filled day. Early in the morning,
the apprentices visited a local bakery
where they were allowed to bake their
own breakfast.
The varied programme, to which the
apprentices responded very well,
was rounded off by a visit to a typical
local wood-carving workshop of the
Bregenzerwald region and a number
of seminars on the subjects of communication, conflict resolution and
character building.
Very good career prospects
Meusburger trains its apprentices
over a period of four years at the
end of which they will qualify as
skilled metal workers, production
technicians, machine fitters, machining technicians and IT technicians.
“These young people have the benefit of first-class training, giving them
excellent career prospects in the
metal industry. Further plus points
are the fact that they are assured of
employment and can pursue their
career within the company”, explains

their tutor, Peter Nussbaumer.
According to him so far almost all
Meusburger apprentices gained a
permanent position in the company
after finishing training. Meusburger
offers high-quality training, a fact
that was recognised by the Vorarlberg state administration by awarding the title “Training Company of
Excellence”. The apprentices all have
modern workplaces and excellent
perspectives and in addition, have
numerous further benefits: company
transport, subsidised lunches in the
company canteen, flexi-time, bonuses for performance and behaviour
at work, and many others. Special
rewards are given to those who
excel at school. In cooperation with
the day-release college, the best
Meusburger apprentice of each
annual intake is given the opportunity to spend one month abroad with
a top European company.

a taster day and gain first impressions which may help them to make

Staff training
Improving knowledge and skills
On-going staff training is a prerequisite for maintaining competitiveness. The company’s training
programmes focus on professional
career development as well as character building. For this reason, in
2009, Meusburger has again been
planning its new tailor-made training activities for the staff.
Each new member of staff starts with
an individually designed training plan.
During this phase, personnel are given the chance to spend some time in
various departments in order to give
them an overview of work processes
and interactions. In addition, intensive training is given to introduce the
range of products. “Induction training
is very well organised and you have
the feeling at Meusburger that each
member of staff is focused on right
from the beginning”, stresses Christine Moser, who works in telephone
marketing. The duration of the training in the various areas depends on
the department and function of the
respective staff member. Every two
to three months, new members of
staff are given a detailed tour of the
company.
Internal knowledge transfer
“Meusburger is in the fortunate
position of having amongst its staff
numerous highly qualified people.
This means that the knowledge
of experienced employees can be

passed on in internal training sessions, and we rarely have to resort
to external support”, explains Roman
Giesinger, Head of Human Resources.
As sales and products are subject to
regular and on-going developments,
Meusburger organises regular training sessions led by qualified staff.
Thereby all members of staff are given the opportunity to benefit from
the knowledge of their colleagues.
An important tool for the transfer
of knowledge and information is the
Microsoft Sharepoint tool (for further
information see page 17).
Communication for sales
representatives
Cooperation and communication
amongst staff has top priority at
Meusburger. Regional Sales Manager
meetings take place six times a year
and are used to discuss all kinds of
issues and to review product innovations. The information gained is
then passed on to the Local Sales
Managers.
In addition, the company organises
an annual course in Business English, which is very popular. Since the
autumn of 2008 Meusburger has
been working together with two different language schools and offers its
members of staff the opportunity to
attend individual courses which have
been designed for their respective
needs.
Environment, health and safety
Topics concerning the environment,
health and safety are again high on
the agenda this year. In this context,
production staff were given a talk on
coolant lubricants by Dipl. Ing. Stefan
Jacobs of Cobtec. “Of course, we
make sure that we handle coolant
lubricants correctly in our work; nevertheless it was interesting to have the
safety regulations pointed out again”,
said Stefan Muxel from the milling
department.

These were good reasons for
Meusburger to invite the sales representatives to an annual sales seminar
which took place in July 2009. Over 40
employees from the whole of Europe
congregated at Wolfurt in order to
receive training on innovations in the
market – which of course is given in
two languages these days (German
and English). Topics such as the correct administration of customer data,
the new CD Catalogue, products in
daily use, pricing, logistics and various role-plays and IT training filled
the whole week. Next year the seminar will again take place in July, and
preparations are already underway.

Origin of document
management
At Meusburger, the so-called ‘document management’ had its origin
in production. More than 15 years
ago, Georg Meusburger started to
collect all valuable information for
the entire machinery. This information was recorded in a database,
checked for current relevance and
the thinned out material was then
distributed to all those who had to
work with the respective machines.
Continuous updating
Meusburger has made good use of
modern technology – although the
methods have not changed. Each
idea is captured with in an info sheet,
i.e. a document is created with a
unique document header, including the title, a number, the person responsible for content with
his extension, and a date. This
document may then be developed
further and, after the necessary
release stages, published in the
Sharepoint document management
system. This means the info sheets
are valuable published knowledge
documents which are accessible to
other members of staff. Many of
these info sheets, which are checked
and possibly further developed at

From the Rheintal to the Arlberg
Location: Vorarlberg
Vorarlberg, the western Austrian
province and home to Meusburger,
is a pioneering area for skiing in
the alpine region. For over 100
years, winter sports of all descriptions have played an important role
in the mountainous region between
Lake Constance and the Arlberg.
In 1906, the first alpine skiing
course for visitors took place on the
Arlberg. In those days, Hannes
Schneider developed the famous
“Arlberg skiing technique” which
was soon adopted worldwide. Today,
the competence of the Vorarlberg
ski schools enjoys international recognition and the region’s ski clubs
are among those with the longest
tradition worldwide. The Vorarlberg
winter sports area offers every com-

fort and a lot of impressive natural
scenery within easy reach. Certainly
not all the peaks have been made
accessible. The skiing infrastructure
was sensitively adjusted to the natural
surroundings, which makes the area
beautiful to look at.
Great viewing points can be found
everywhere: in Lech-Zürs, which
counts as one of the best skiing areas
worldwide; in the Montafon region,
where skiers have a choice of several skiing areas; in the family-friendly
Brandnertal and in the Bregenzerwald,
which is also known for its excellent mountain cheese. These villages
have preserved their typical flair and
have not turned into “ski stations”.
Notable is the beautiful (timber)
architecture. The accommodation in

Vorarlberg is of a high quality in all
price categories – from five-star hotels
to private rooms. Most hotels have
been run by families for generations.
Skiing in Vorarlberg
As a skiing destination, Vorarlberg
benefits from its systematic quality strategy and ideal topographical
conditions. About two thirds of
Vorarlberg is situated more than
1,000 meters above sea level. Many
of the ski resorts reach into levels of
1,400 to 2,400 meters where snow
is guaranteed. From the very top
one has a wonderful view across the
Vorarlberg and Swiss mountains. The

globe appreciate the Vorarlberg cuisine. In Vorarlberg you will find the
greatest number of excellent restaurants and inns in relation to its number
of inhabitants and compared to other
Austrian provinces. In its 2009 edition, the Michelin Guide awards eight
Vorarlberg restaurants with a star.
Lech-Zürs alone, with its 1,400 residents, boasts four restaurants with a
Michelin star.
Cheesemaking in the Bregenzerwald
landscape is impressive and imposing
while not as harsh as can be found in
even higher locations. There is plenty
of space for a good mixture of gentle and more demanding ski slopes.
Likewise, many resorts allow sufficient
space for a combination of groomed
and ungroomed slopes. Off-piste
skiing has a long tradition in all
Vorarlberg regions – particularly so on
the Arlberg itself.
Eating well in Vorarlberg
The cuisine is one of the best of
Austria. It offers both creative-light
and traditional cooking. Chefs like
to use regional products such as the
famous mountain cheese, fish from
Lake Constance, meat from local
farms, fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Bregenzerwald – from cheese inn
to cheese inn
The culinary flagship of the
Bregenzerwald is the mountain and
alpine cheese, a tasty hard cheese
which develops a more pronounced
taste the longer it is left to mature. The
Bregenzerwald ‘cheese road’ is dedicated to cheese and all its aspects, and
is supported by a federation of alpine
dairy farms, farmers and innkeepers.
No less than 44 Bregenzerwald inns are
accredited “cheese inns” and have an
appropriate menu. Their menus range
from the traditional, such as cheese
soup and the typical “Käsknöpfle”,
through to light dishes such as salad
with mild fresh cheese or fluffy quarksoufflé. Most “cheese inn” innkeepers
offer their delicious wares in typical
shingle-clad Bregenzerwald houses.

The Meusburger aquarium
Since the beginning of October,
visitors to Meusburger are not only
greeted by our friendly staff on
reception, but also by 20 local fish
from Lake Constance, who take a
curious look at the incoming visitors.
The aquarium boasts a viewing panel
of 4 m² and a total of 4,000 litres
of water with 20 fish such as carp,
river perch, catfish, bream, chub and
two crabs. As a passionate fisher-
man, Guntram Meusburger fulfilled his
own childhood dream and brought
Lake Constance indoors. The basin,
which weighs 4.5 tonnes, is cleaned
with the help of a sophisticated filter system. This is maintained and
serviced by the in-house maintenance department. The Meusburger
aquarium can be visited at any time
by regional day nurseries, schools
and all fish enthusiasts.
Alternative energy
from compressed
Compressed air systems in production facilities not only generate compressed air, but also a lot
of heat. Meusburger has a total
of five air compressors with a
capacity of 1,950 m³ / hour.
The largest part of the input
energy is lost as heat during generation. We make use of this heat
and conduct it to places where
it is needed. At Meusburger it is
used to provide the company’s
hot water all year round.

On 4 October 2009, the ‘Threecountries marathon’ took place
in sunny weather and with the
support of 5,000 enthusiastic
runners. The course to be covered started in Lindau (D), led via
Bregenz (A), Hard (A), Fussach
(A), Höchst (A), St. Margarethen
(CH), and back to Hard (A) and
Bregenz (A). The best time of
the day was run by the Kenyan
Suparimuk Samson, in a time of
02:15:59.
Half marathon
There was also a half marathon
(21.097 km) in which the following
five gentlemen took part:

In the quarter marathon (11.450
km) Roman Giesinger gave his best.
With the start number 7268 and
a time of 01:06:44, he achieved a
creditable 24th place (in class M 35).
Relay race
Hannes Hammerer, together with
three other runners, completed the
relay race in a time of 03:58:00
and, with start number 5006, was
placed 28th.
Meusburger was also represented
by eight athletes who did their
very best. In the M 40 class, Otmar
Meusburger was placed 158th.
With the start number 189 and a
time of 04:22:09, he ran the whole
marathon (42.195 km).

What´s new at Meusburger

Skiiing day 2009
This year, the ‘Meuser’ skiing day
took place on Saturday 7 March 2009.
In spite of the changeable weather,
with snowfall and sunshine, about
50 enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders turned up, including even two
cross-country skiers. The day started
at around 9am. Fortunately nobody
was injured in spite of approx. 20 cm
of fresh snow and some involuntary
falls. At midday everybody fortified
themselves at a pub stop and the
day was rounded off starting with
dinner in the Jägeralpe.

240 km), through the Allgäu – Oberjoch – Tannheimertal – Lechtal –
Bregenzerwald, were a delight for all
six bikers.
Soccer 2009
The season of the Meuser soccer legends continued as successfully as it
had begun. Except for a draw against
Interchemie, the team was able to win
all its matches. Against Haberkorn
Ulmer 8:2, Zollsport 2:1, SV Werder
7:2 and in the return match against
Interchemie, Meusburger won with
an emphatic 4:2. The last matches
were well attended and the enthusiastic female fans cheered for the
Meuser team.
Fishing day 2009
“Petri heil” (Good fishing!) was the
motto at the Lünersee on 1 August.
The weather was great, the fish were
biting and there was plenty of fish for
the evening meal to end the day in a
convivial atmosphere at Kurt Vonach’s
home.
Mountainbike outing 2009
This year’s Meuser Mountainbike outing headed for Finale Ligure (Italy).
Our bikers covered 280 km and about
3,600 meters in altitude. It was a great
outing with good camaraderie and –
thank God - no accidents.
Motorbike trip 2009
“Born to be wild” – that was the

Bicycle outing 2009
Over 30 cyclists took part in the
“Ländle Tour”, in spite of changeable
weather conditions. But as God was
watching over them, they all arrived
dry at the Subirerhof, where the day
was rounded off in high spirits late
into the night.
Card playing competition 2009
This year Meusburger’s legendary
“Jassen” competition took place at
the Schwanen Inn in Dornbirn on
6 November. 96 enthusiastic “Jassen” players took part and tried to
guess the overall score at the end of
the game as accurately as possible.
Martin Fussenegger was closest to
hitting the number, closely followed
by Martin Bischofberger. Third place
went to Kerstin Bentele.
