Kirkeby hat selbst sehr klar über seine Faszination durch das Ornament gesprochen.
Am Beginn stand wohl eher die Vorliebe für die von kompositorischen Hierarchien
freie Art der Wiederholung, der Reihung einfacher, gleicher Elemente — i m Sinne
der Minimal Art. Sein Verständnis geht aber über das hinaus und folgt der Spur aller
jener, die im Ornament eine Illustration der pulsierenden Dynamik des Lebens selbst
erblicken, eine abstrakte Formwerdung des endlosen Auf und Ab der Existenz, des
fortwährenden Wechsels von Werden und Vergehen, der unablässigen Wiederholung
der in polare Strukturen gebetteten Zyklen des Seins.

Kirkeby himself was quite clear about his fascination with ornament. It probably
started out rather as a fondness for free repetition, void of compositional hierarchies;
the ranging of simple identical elements in a Minimal Art fashion. He developed this
idea considerably after those who saw in ornament the pulsating dynamics of life
itself, an abstract form of the perpetual ups and downs of existence, the irrevocable
process of life, the constant repetition of the cycles of being, embedded in polar
structures.

Elementare Architektur
Kirkebys Backsteinwerke sind elementare Architekturen, die einem skulpturalen
Oeuvre entwachsen sind, das seinerseits vom Elementaren des Architektonischen
ausging. Die Frage, ob Kirkeby nun Architektur macht oder nicht, ist nur eine
rhetorische, eine ideologische. Wenn wir den Ursprung der Baukunst im Kultischen
sehen, das mit der Aufrichtung von Malen und der Markierung von Orten beginnt, ist
die Antwort einfach. Wenn wir das Dach, die Geste des Schutzes an den Beginn des
Bauens stellen, bleibt die Antwort für die fast durchwegs dachlosen Räume Kirkebys
offen. Es könnte aber auch so sein, dass heute für die emotionale Behausung der
Menschen an ungeklärten Orten solche im banalen Sinne schutzlosen Räume eben
eine geistige, erlebnishafte Sphäre sichern und damit einen Part ausfüllen, den die
landläufige Architektur viel zu selten wahrnimmt.
Elementary Architecture
Kirkebyʼs brick works are elementary architectures which grew out of a sculptural
oeuvre, itself originating in the basics of architecture. The question as to whether or
not Kirkeby produced architecture is rhetorical ideological. If we see the orgins of
architecture in the cult domain, that is the marking of places and construction of
memorials, then the answer is simple. If the process of building begins with construction of the roof as a gesture of protection, the answer remains open for Kirkeby´s
mostly roofless rooms. Another possible answer is that for the emotional housing
needs of modern man, these »unprotected« spaces secure an undefined experiential
sphere which sadly is all too often neglected by functional modern architecture.
