What is the Mass HIway?
The Massachusetts Health Information Highway (Mass HIway) is the statewide
Health Information Exchange (HIE) providing secure electronic transport of
electronic health information among health care organizations*
The Mass HIway offers two services:
1. Direct Messaging - Secure “push” of messages from one healthcare
organization to another
2. Query and Retrieve – Location and request of patient records
Note that the Mass HIway is not a clinical data repository HIE and holds no
clinical information. The Mass HIway is also not the state health insurance
exchange known as the Health Connector.
*Initial participation is open to Massachusetts-licensed providers and entities, Massachusetts-licensed
health plans, and Commonwealth agencies.

What the PD can do for You
What PD is for:

The PD provides destination addresses for Direct messaging and some additional
information to search for these addresses
If you would like to figure out what organizations/individuals to exchange
information with, what data to exchange, and how - this is best done through
discussions with your high priority information trading partners - Your Mass HIway
Account Manager can help you broker these discussions
How to set up Addresses (1 of 2)
Planning for address set up:
-
Examine your current patient information flows in and out of your organization
-
Determine how you would like your organization, departments and providers to
be represented to others
-
Assess your vendors’ (EHR, Integration Engine) capabilities to send and receive and
any specific routing information they require
-
Your Mass HIway Account Manager will help you and can provide addressing
conventions used by current Mass HIway participants
Adding Users and Addresses
-
Access Administrators from your organization are accountable for authenticating
and authorizing your organization’s users
-
Access Administrators submit Address information using the Mass HIway Provider
Directory Upload File (.xls).

Participant requests and Mass HIway provides the domain name by organization:

Participant provides Organizational, Department, and/or individual level addresses:

- Note: Webmail boxes can have multiple users who access a single account.
Participant provides minimal data set with addresses to aid others in searching for
and finding addresses including alternative contact for verification (e.g., Phone #)
How to Access Addresses
Addressing is similar to your email process
- If your EHR allows it, you may directly enter a known address manually
- If your EHR has directories, they may be integrated with the Mass HIway PD (vendor
dependent)
Ways to Access Addresses:
- Within your EHR messaging function(s): EHR vendors update their systems with the
Mass HIway PD Extract or web service
- Within LAND: LAND accesses PD via web service
- Within Webmail: Mass HIway Secure Webmail has a provider lookup function
- By using manual PD Extract: Mass HIway distributes PD to participating participants
and vendors upon request by issuing a monthly notification and password – You may
then download the PD extract from Mass HIway website

Accessed through Webmail interface and allows search by first/last name, etc.
How to keep addresses current
Mass HIway maintains the PD - Access Administrators provide additions, updates,
and deletions:
- Check with your Account Manager to get the most updated PD update file before
compiling the updates
- On the Provider Upload file, use the column “Entry Status” and note the entry as
either an “Add”, “Update”, or “Deletion”
- Participants are required to manage their entries. They should be accurate and
timely.
- Mass HIway must be notified immediately for the following situations with
individual addressees: Termination / Suspension, Completion of assignment
(e.g., Resident), Resignation, Lost or suspended license
FAQs
Can all of the providers or departments at my organization be listed?
-
Yes. Each organization determines how best to organize and list users in the PD. An
organization can choose to list individuals, departments, such as an emergency
department or medical records office, or a combination of both. An organization
can choose not to list all staff initially and add new users as internal workflows are
established.
How can I specify a format for the direct email username?
-
The format for the username on the left-hand side of the direct address may be
specified in the Provider Directory Provider Upload File under “Requested Email
Address Format”. Consider how you want to be represented. (e.g.
[email protected] )
How do I set up a shared webmail mailbox when adding users?
-
If you are using one mailbox for multiple users, you may specify this in the Provider
Directory Provider Upload File under “Shared Mailbox Address”. This option is only
available to webmail providers.
FAQs
Will the PD show who is ready to receive a certain type of message?
-
Not at this time. Participants are encouraged reach out to their respective trading
partners to determine which types of messages that organization is ready to
receive. Your Account Manager can assist in brokering these readiness discussions
What if I use a non-HIway Health Information Services Provider (HISP) for Direct
messaging – Can I access Mass HIway addresses? How about the other way around?
-
Yes – Mass HIway provides its PD to other HISPs and imports addresses from other
HISPs through monthly updates - Contact your HISP to see where they are with
Provider Directory exchange
