02 NEW IKEA CATALOGUE
Small space is a reality in all living
situations and everyone perceive at least
parts of their home as limited. Of course,
it's easy to be inspiring with unlimited
space and resources. It's challenging,
and more fun, to be creative in a small
space. Try it!
So here's a sentiment we really like:
"Don't give up on your dreams, just
shrink them." If we can shrink our living
to a smarter space, we can have more
money and time to do fun stuff, and
definitely less cleaning!
At IKEA, we like to make good things that
are good for people, however and where
they live. That's why this newsletter and
the new 2012 IKEA Catalogue is focusing
on sharing smart solutions to make full
use of the space we each have at home.

Inspiration awaits in 376 pages of the new 2012 IKEA Catalogue. Grab a magnifying
glass, because this year we’re going small, looking at how to use space in a smarter way
– whether it’s a tiny family bathroom or an awkward wall in the hallway. This year, our
inspiring roomsettings encourage people not to give up their dreams, just shrink them.
Remember, reading the Catalogue is the best way to prepare for a visit to the IKEA
store. Reading it in the peace and quiet of your own home, measuring up and making a
systematic shopping list will help to make your visit to the store that much easier.

Dear friends,
A majority of us live in apartments and
most have limited space. Being smart
with your space is not just a concern for
single people, families with and without
children,
multi-generation
families,
roommates, etc. – people of all ages are
thinking about it.
NEW IKEA CATALOGUE
(And when you put away the magnifying glass, may we suggest hanging it on a hook?)
Facts and figures
The new IKEA Catalogue is now out! Here are some
facts at a glance.
• We’ve printed 208 million copies this year.
• The Catalogue is distributed in 39 countries and
translated into 31 languages. Making it the most
widely distributed publication in the world!
• You can download an e-copy of the IKEA
Catalogue (both English and Chinese version)
from www.IKEA.com.sg/2012_catalogue.
There is also an iPhone and Android app available.
Wall at the ICOM pantry
with all the designers' photos.
A taste of the real IKEA
Meet Ping Ng, a Singaporean abroad
working with the IKEA Communications
(ICOM) team as an Interior Designer
in Sweden.
What’s it like to be working for ICOM?
It’s really exciting to be part of ICOM.
There are a total of 283 staff in this
building including graphic designers,
copywriters, web designers, interior
designers, photographers, production
leaders etc. Each interior designer is
given a different project and I’m having
fun working on mine!
So, how’s the transition?
It's a totally new experience for
someone who comes from hot sunny
Singapore to a cold, cold ”village” they
call (Älmhult). Even though it is now
Summer here, it still feels different from
Singapore. The weather is always a
topic for the people here. Haha.
What are you most impressed with?
Recycling is a big thing for the people
here. In ICOM, be it at the pantry or
office, you will find a corner with clearly
labelled recycling bins for different
types of trash.
FIKA (which also means tea break), is
the time where co-workers will gather
at the big pantry area for coffee and do
some catching up. Over here, there are
2 FIKAs a day, one in the morning and
the other in the afternoon.
What’s the most amusing thing
you’ve encountered?
When I first came to ICOM and told
them I was from Singapore, some of
them thought that it was some place in
China! Haha!
Most, or rather all of them, don’t know
how to pronounce my surname ”Ng”.
And when I told them, they would
tell me, ”Ping, you have a strange/
interesting surname!”
• Though Ingvar
Kamprad
wrote all the
copy for
the first IKEA
Catalogue, this
year’s Catalogue
was written by
six copywriters.
• Production
work began in
October last
year.
•
To make this year’s Catalogue,
120 different rooms were built in
the studio. 1060 photographs
were taken and 232 images were
made in 3D.

Imagine a mild late summer evening.
Friends gathered around a table placed
outdoors – in a garden, on a veranda
or balcony. The table is set with
serving trays overflowing with bright
red crayfish. There is bread, as well as
cheese, shrimps and various pies. And
as the sun sets slowly, paper lanterns
glow in the increasing darkness.
Together with countless lit candles,
they cast a dim, almost mystical light
on the merry crowd.
One can hear laughter, slurping, songs,
clinking glasses and shouts of “Skål”
IKEA Alexandra only.
(cheers in Swedish) as toasts are made.
The guests are wearing paper hats and
bibs with colourful crayfish motifs.
Everyone is equipped with crayfish
utensils, paper plates and a compilation
of songs to accompany the snaps.
At one time, the lakes of central
Sweden teemed with crayfish. Highclass restaurants in big European
cities imported and served them as an
exotic delicacy.
At the end of the 1800’s, the large
export made crayfish extremely rare
in Sweden. The government imposed
laws limiting fishing to only two months
a year starting from August. Since
then, each crayfish season became
marked by celebration.
In Sweden, fika is a treasured part of the day.
It translates as having a coffee break, or taking a
break from whatever you are doing, and is central to
Swedish life. During fika, one would typically have a
coffee or a hot beverage accompanied with sweet,
baked goods like cinnamon rolls.
Swedes take their fika very seriously, and Cinnamon
buns (or Kanelbullar in Swedish) have become a
classic Swedish favourite. In fact, this sweet pastry is
so popular that Swedes even celebrate "Kanelbullens
dag" or Cinnamon bun day on the 4th of October.
Bake some Cinnamon Buns
This is what you need:

There’s nothing like a
Swedish crayfish party
As summer is coming to an end in
Sweden, there is still one thing to look
forward to for young and old alike – the
“kräftskiva” or crayfish party.
Cinnamon Bun Day
But in the 1960’s, the crayfish
enthusiasts were struck with a new
disaster: “the crayfish plague” hit the
crayfish population hard and eliminated
most crayfish from Sweden’s waters.

Sweden, once the world’s largest
exporter of crayfish now became the
world’s largest importer.
Today, crayfish are imported in huge
amounts from many parts of the world.
While the seasonal ban on fishing and
eating crayfish was lifted years ago,
crayfish parties in August remain a
tradition that is stronger than ever.

25g of yeast for sweet dough
2½dl milk
7dl flour
75g butter
½dl sugar
1 pinch of salt
1 teaspoon cardamom
Cinnamon filling:
• 50g butter
• ½dl sugar
• 1 tablespoon water
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Glazing - bread shine:
• 1 egg, ½ teaspoon water
• Granulated sugar
This is how you do it:
Prepare all ingredients and let them
reach room temperature. Crumble
yeast into a food processor or bowl.
Heat milk to 37°, pour it over the
yeast and stir to dissolve it. Add
most of the flour, all the butter in
pieces, sugar and salt.
Work the dough really smooth.
When you can pull out the dough as
thin as a nylon stocking - it is ready.
Let it rise under a cloth until doubled
about 30 minutes.
Filling:
Mix or whisk together the butter,
sugar, water and cinnamon.
Put the dough on the breadboard,
knead and divide into two parts.
Roll out each piece into a rectangle.
Spread the cinnamon filling on to
the rectangle. Roll up from long side
into a long roll. Brush the edges with
a little water to attach it better. Cut
into 2 cm pieces. Put each piece into
the baking parchment and on to the
plate.
Set the oven to 250°C. Let rise
under a cloth until doubled, 20 - 30
minutes.
Whisk together eggs salt and water.
Brush or spray the buns with it.
Sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake
in the oven for 7-8 minutes.

savers
Regardless of the amount of space,
everyone carries out similar activities
– eating, working, socialising,
sleeping and cooking. Don’t give
up on your dreams – just shrink
them. Space-saving products take
less space when not in use. They
are foldable, stackable, shrinkable
and expandable. E.g. Sliding doors
require less space to ‘operate’ than
a swing-open door. Having 2 small

In love with
small and smart
Being big is easier. Being small and
smart is a challenge. More and more
people are living in small spaces and
most feel they have more things than
they have space for.
Reality is, no matter how large
the home, everyone has small and
challenging spaces that require smart
solutions. It might be a kitchen that feels
too small, a cramped bathroom or a
utility room that is difficult to organise. STORÅ loft bedframe, full/double

all words you need to think about in
small space living.
extra energy is needed to do the things
you love. It is about function, beauty
and individual taste to create a home
you like. No fuss, just fun!
Some products and solutions are
obvious but don’t forget those that,
with a little extra imagination and
creativity, can be used and combined
into functional solutions.
Here are some essential small space
solutions that have small price tags too.
They are also smart, good-looking and
reliable. Don’t those sound like good
qualities for a flat mate?
Life at home should be easy. The things
you live with should be arranged so no
Some smart stacking can easily
double your space, whether it's

If there’s nothing available that can be
‘shrunk’ when not in use, then consider

Mobility
To make your floor-space change
depending on your activities, a
mobile drawer-unit, chair or bedside
table on wheels can easily free up
some space. Even a relatively heavy
piece of furniture is easy to move if
it has wheels. Mobile solutions can
be easily moved within or between
spaces depending on the need.

Living in a small space, it’s important not to just cram
things in on top of each other. Divide the space into distinct
areas so it’s more organised and flexible.
High
performers
Floor space is at a premium, so
it is important to keep it clear.
Height is as important - walls
need to be used to their fullest.
Hooks are brilliant for hanging
e.g. extra foldable chairs. And
shelves fixed high up to the
ceiling are great too, especially
for typically unused space e.g.
above doorways. The keyword
here is logistics. Stuff that you
seldom use should be stowed
highest up and furthest in.

A flexible wall-mounted system helps
to keep kitchen rolls, washing liquid,
knives and bottles away from the
work surface.
Living space
Keep in mind that maximising space does not necessarily mean filling up
every space with storage solutions. Empty wall and floor space can be just as
important in small spaces since some breathing room make things feel more
open and spacious.
Use light colours and mirrors to create space. Products in white create an
illusion of a bigger space. Both light colours and mirrors give the impression
of more space and openness. Consider the placement of the mirrors carefully,
as mirrors that face each other can create a feeling of distortion. E.g. slender
glass tables are more effective for creating the sense of space than thick
wooden ones.
Keep the
beauty and let
your wooden
floor shine
There are many floor owners that spend
money to maintain their wooden floors with
a generic process that actually ruins their
floors. Using the right floor care product for

Apart from extending the beauty and lifetime
keep maintenance costs at a reasonable level

and to keep the value of his investment. Here
are some floor care basics :
What to do
What not to do
✓ Vacuum or sweep your
floors regularly. General
leaning once every week is
recommended.
✗
✓ Remove spills promptly,
using a special wooden
floor cleaner.
✗ Don’t damp mop wooden floors.
Too much water can cause the
floor to swell or warp.
✓
Place mats at exterior
doors to trap sand and
grit. Use area rugs in high
traffic pathways, at the ends
of steps and near doorways.
Avoid rubber backing or
non-ventilated rugs.
✓ Use protective pads or caps.
✓ Renew worn surfaces with
a wooden floor refresher
before the bare wood is
exposed.
✗
Don’t let sand, dirt or grit
build up. They can act like
and paper, abrading and
dulling your floor finish.
Don’t let your pets’ claws go
untrimmed. Proper claw
trimming helps avoid scratches
and gouges.
✗ Don’t walk on your wooden
floors in high heels and keep
your heels in good repair.
✗
Don’t use wax, oil soap or
other household cleaners on
finished wooden floor. They
can dull the floor’s finish and
make refinishing difficult.

Whether you’re getting

adjustments that can be
fun and challenging at
times. Here are some tips
when planning your home
or bedroom together.
KIVIK chaise longue $475/ea
W90xD163, H183cm. Ingebo light beige.
Who calls the shot?
Sometimes this depends
on who is using a particular
room most often. Especially
for the kitchen, it needs to
be functional for the main
chef. And if both parties
cook, then the kitchen’s flow
must allow 2 chefs to work
at the same time.
www.IKEA.com.sg/mattressguide

Find your perfect mattress that suits you at
Personalise your own wardrobe at
What’s mine is yours. Agree on storage and wardrobe
needs. One party may require more space than the other.
Besides personal items, also think about storage for general
items e.g. bed sheets and towels. Why settle? Get a modular
system like the PAX/KOMPLEMENT which allows you to
customise according to each person’s preference.
SORTERA storage box $19/ea

GODMORGON/
VITVIKEN washstand with 2

Think about future
plans. If you plan to have
kids, then you may need
furniture that’s child-friendly
(e.g. rounded corners), or
something that can be moved
about easily for a room
change. Or something that’s
flexible and can be used at
another area.
Talk it out. Discuss the look of your home, theme,
colours, style and budget (including who pays for
what). If both parties agree everything don't need to be
matchy-matchy, then perhaps each person may like to
choose a special armchair that’s their personal throne.
Compromise. Everyone has
stuff and it always seems like
storage is not enough. When
packing to move in together,
take a careful look at the things
you have and be prepared
to throw some things out or
better yet, recycle or reuse
them. Sort out your trash with
the SOTERA storage boxes.
Be understanding
of each others' habits.
E.g. If a particular person
takes a lot of time in the
bathroom and there isn’t a
spare, think about having
planned schedules or place
a clock inside the bathroom.
Depending on the size of
the bathroom, perhaps
you could also have 2 sinks
instead of 1.
More than skin deep. Discuss activities that each person likes to do at home and in
each room. E.g. watching TV in the bedroom, yes or no? Do you both plan to entertain a
lot? Maybe you’ll need an extendable table and extra stackable chairs. One partner likes
to read in bed? Then a reading lamp is needed but placed deliberately so the glare doesn't
affect the other person.
Sleep around. For a
suitable mattress, that
is. Both persons should
have a say in testing and
choosing the matrimonial
mattress. If both parties
have very different sleeping
needs, then consider having
2 separate single size
mattresses to form a king
size mattress. Create a
seamless feel by adding on a
mattress pad.
BEDDINGE LÖVÅS three-seat sofa-bed $345
W200xD104, H91cm. Ransta dark grey.
Finally, be open.
Do recognise that you don't
become 1 person but are
still 2 individuals learning
to co-exist peacefully.
Home building is a living
project that’s never really
completed. You'll both only
figure out what works best
through trial and error.
