President’s Corner…
Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen!
Ah...Spring....the flowers are peeking their leaves through the snow, everything is starting to look a little fresher and a
feeling of excitement and anticipation runs through the school hallways. I don’t know about all of you, but spring
always makes me feel re-energized and ready to try new things. I have been experimenting with new lessons and
activities with my students and have been seeing some exciting results. Most of the new ideas came from the MiWLA
and ACTFL conferences that I attended in the fall and I am just now getting around to trying them out. What a great
resource we have as language teachers in our colleagues. We share ideas, give advice and support each other. This is
why the AATG is so important!
I am so looking forward to our chapter’s spring meeting. The 2011 MI-AATG Spring Meeting will once
again take place on Saturday, April 16 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Wayne State University. The meeting is in
conjunction with a Workshop funded by the Uwe K. Faulhaber Endowment for Applied German Studies. This year
we are pleased to have invited Professor Gregory H. Wolf, Associate Professor of German at North Central College in
Naperville, IL to conduct a workshop on "Strategies for Successful German Programs: Advocacy, Articulation,
and Outreach." Professor Wolf currently serves as the Midwest representative on the Executive Council of the
AATG. For the last 5 years he has lead a national AATG task force charged with developing program building
strategies for K-16 levels and modeling successful programs in German. The workshop is free for AATG-MI members
and includes lunch. The registration deadline is April 10. For more information and to register, please contact Mark

There is another excellent reason to attend the workshop on April 16. During the luncheon, we will honor
Michigan students (and their teachers) who scored 90% or higher on the 2010 National German Exam. Many
Michigan students achieved this prestigious score and those students were eligible to apply for the AATG-PAD study
trip to Germany. Thanks to all those teachers who encouraged their students to take the exam and to apply for the trip.
Michigan’s nominee for the trip award, Jonathan Schlecht (student of Eugene Jurkiewicz at Detroit Country Day
School), was chosen to travel to Germany this summer and will be honored at the luncheon on April 16! Gratuliere
Jonathan and Eugene!
AATG, the Goethe Institut and so many others offer such great opportunities for both teachers and students.
In fact, I just took my students to a concert hosted by Micheal Bilen of L’anse Cruse Schools featuring UWE KIND!
What a BLAST it was to see over 350 high school kids singing and dancing in GERMAN! All these groups offer so
much, just take a look at their websites and at the announcements IN THIS NEWSLETTER for some fabulous
opportunities.
As always, I would like to thank you for all you do for our profession. I know that, sometimes, being a
German teacher is really discouraging. However, we have such great opportunities to work together, to share ideas
and to help each other that no one has to do it alone. This combined with the GREAT students we all have is what
makes our profession worth all the heartache. I hope to see you all at the Workshop and AATG-MI Spring Meeting
on Saturday, April 16!

were approved. Kathy Tosa moved and Judy Cooper
seconded.
2. Melissa King-Polsinelli presented Donna KamermanHouskamp’s written treasurer’s report due to her absence.

3. Mitchell Place, newsletter co-editor, reported that the
newsletter had been sent electronically and submissions from
members were requested.
4. President Melissa King also announced the names of new
officers: Secretary Kara Stutzman and Membership Chair Lee
Forester.
5. AATG National Test: Mitchell Place graciously volunteered
to take on the position as Testing Chair. Linda Marlow stated
that she will continue to support his efforts. Melissa reported
that a Jennifer Gleit from Troy High School won the trip for
the year. A letter from Jennifer is attached. Melissa also
informed the Chapter that 85 students earned a 90% or more
on the tests. October 29th was the deadline for ordering the
tests for 2010-2011.

Our new Membership Chair, Lee Forester, will also handle our numbers and portions of the
communication. Judy Cooper suggested a mass mailing and using money to get postcards
and send them. Angelika suggested moving into an online option, after the website is
moved. Melissa can also talk to National Representatives at ACTFL about
communications. Kathy Tosa mentioned a spreadsheet including member data too.
New Business
1. Chapter Project: Four new teachers, Nick Combes (Lansing), Devin Elsey (Sterling
Heights), Claudia Molter (Lansing), and Carrie Watkins (Garden City). Each teacher
received a copy of The AATG-MI Guide to German Teacher Resources, items from the
Goethe Institut, readers and an assortment of goodies from retired teacher, Candy Gardner.
2. Projects through MSU: Angelika Kraemer shared information about German immersion
programs and exchange student programs.

3. Spring Meeting: The Spring AATG-MI will again be held at Wayne State. Date and time to
be determined. Maybe AATG-MI will include a Stammtisch at the Dakota Inn Ratskeller as
a social component to the Spring Meeting and workshop. Melissa will investigate.
4. ACTFL Conference and AATG President’s meeting: Judy Cooper moved to include a $150
stipend to defray costs for President Melissa King to attend the ACTFL Conference in
November. Kathy Tosa seconded the motion.
5. Meeting Attendance and Membership: Kathy Tosa moved to use chapter money to pay for a
student to work on updating the membership listing with Lee. This motion was seconded
by Linda Marlow. Angelika Kraemer suggested giving the student a title and saving the
money.
6. Announcements
Linda Marlow moved to adjourn the meeting. Angelika Kraemer seconded the motion.

Meine Reise nach Deutschland

Danke schön, für die
unglaubliche Gelegenheit zu reisen
nach Deutschland und blieben mit
eine Gastfamilie für drei und ein halb
Wochen. Diese Reise war so
fantastisch, ich werde es nie
vergessen.
Ich war so nervös, für diese
Reise – ein neues Land, alle neue
Leute, und zu sprechen die ganze
Zeit eine Sprache ich habe für nur
zwei Jahren in die Schule gelernt.
Aber, ich brauchte nicht nervös sein,
weil alles war so toll. Alle die Leute
ich habe getrifft sind sehr nett und
wir sind jetzt sehr gute Freundinnen.
Ich vermisse jedermann. Meine
Gastfamilie war sehr nett. Sie waren
sehr freundlich und einladend. Sie
haben mich geholfen mit mein
Deutsch und sie haben mich gezeigt
die schöne Sehenswürdigkeiten in
der Nähe von ihren Haus.
Deutschland ist eine sehr
schönes Land. Ich liebe die
Mischung von Wälder, kleine Dörfer,
und groβe Städte in Deutschland. Ich
denke, es ist auch sehr kuhl, wie in
Deutschland ein siebenhundert Jahre
alte Kirche ist neben ein
Handygeschäft. Die Mischung von
alt und neu in Deutschland ist
wunderbar. Ich liebte sehen die sehr
alte Kirche und Schlösser, wie
Lorenz Kirche in Nürnberg und
Schloss Sans Souci in Potsdam.
Geschichte gefällt mir, so ich denke
die alte Gebäude sind sehr
interessant.
Ich mag auch die
Verkehrsmittel in Deutschland. Es ist
so toll, wie man kann mit die UBahn, S-Bahn, Zug, oder Bus
irgendwo gehen. Es ist so bequem
und macht es leichter für Junge Leute
ohne seinen Führerscheine zu gehen
Plätze. Ich wohnte in Wendelstein,
und es war super, das ich könnte in
weniger als einer Stunde von deise
kleinen Stadt in die Innenstadt von
Nürnberg gehen. Nürnberg ist ein
tolles Stadt. Ich liebte spazieren
gehen in die Innenstadt. Da war
immer viel zu sehen, aber bei die
Ende der Reise ich fühlte mich wie
ich kenne mein Weg herum.

Diese Reise war fantastisch,
weil wir haben viel gesehen. Alle die
Ausflüge waren sehr gute organisiert.
Wir haben immer etwas interessant
gesehen – Museen, Schlösser,
Kirchen, historische
Sehenswürdigkeiten, Theater, und
einen Bleistift Fabrik. Ich denke, es
war toll dass wir hatten beide Freizeit
und etwas alle zusammen geplannt.
Es war wunderbar, dass wir haben
mit eine Gastfamilie gebleiben, und
Alltag in Deutschland erfahren, und
wir haben Sehenswürdigkeiten in
vielen verschiedenen Städten
gesehen. Ich liebte die Ausflüge nach
Berlin, Würzburg, und München.
Diese Reise war besonders
toll, weil ich habe Deutsche Kultur
aus erster Hand gesehen. Eine von
meine Lieblingsdinge ich habe
gemacht war ins Weltmeisterschaft
public viewing in Berlin gehen. Es
war so kuhl. Alle die Leute waren so
temperamentvoll. Sie haben alle
Kleidungen mit schwarz, rot, und
gelb getragt. Da war Musik und
Essen. Es war viel Spaβ. Ich spielte
auch gerne Deutsche Spiele mit

meine Gastfamilie, wie Kniffel. Das
Deutsche Essen war auch toll. Es
schmeckt sehr gut, besonders das
Eis, Schokolade, und Käsespätzle.
Ich liebte auch essen Brötchen mit
Nutella für Frühstück. Es war auch
toll zu gehen in eine Deutsche
Schule. Es war interessant zu sehen,
wie Deutsche
Schule sind anders und ähnlich von
Amerikanischen Schule. Zu gehen in
eine Deutsche Schule war eine
Erfahrung ich konnte nicht haben ob
ich war nur ein Tourist.
Auch alle die kleine Dinge
in Deutschland waren super. Gehen
nach das Supermarkt war ein tolles
Erlebnis. Es war kuhl zu verstanden
die Namen von der Lebensmittel.
Lernen ein neues Deutsche Wört,
oder nehmen alle die richtigen
Vehrkehrsmitel nach Hause waren
große Erfolge. Einen Tag in
Nürnberg, wir alle haben Dirndls und
Lederhosen anprobiert. Es war viel
Spaβ. Wir haben auch ins Kino in
Deutschland gegangen. Es war klasse
zu sehen ein Film in Deutsch ohne
Untertitel und zu verstanden
meistens die Dialog. Ich liebte auch
rennen durch Wasserbrunnen, weil es
war so heiβ. Schwimmen in das
Rothsee mit meine Gastfamilie war
auch klasse. Es war so schön da, und
viel Spaβ. Wir haben auch im
Englische Garten in München
geschwommen. Es war toll.
Es war schwer, an diese
Reise, zu sprechen immer Deutsch.
Aber, meine Gastfamilie war sehr
verständnisvoll. Sie haben immer
langsam gesprochen, so ich könnte
verstanden was sie haben gesagt.
Also, sie haben mir mit schwere
Wörter geholfen. Ich denke mein
Deutsch ist viel besser jetzt. Ich habe
so viele neue Wörter an diese Reise
gelernt. Ich denke, ich weiβ doppelt
so viele Wörter wie bevor ich habe
nach Deutschland gegangen. Also,
ich bin jetzt viel mehr zuversichtlich
wann ich spreche Deutsch. Durch die
Ende der Reise ich beginnte zu
denken ein bischen in Deutsch.
Ich habe immer reisen
geliebt, aber diese Reise nach
Deutschland war meine
Lieblingsreise. Es war die eine mal
ich habe mit eine Gastfamilie
gebleibt und erfährt ein Platz wie die
Leute da, nicht nur wie ein Tourist.
Ich möchte im Ausland studieren in
die Zukunft, hoffentlich in
Deutschland. Diese Reise war eine
wunderbare Erfahrung. Ich habe
viele neue Freundinnen gemacht, viel
interessante Sehenswürdigkeiten
gesehen, viel Deutsch gelernt, und
ich habe jetzt viel mehr Vertrauen.
Ich kann zu ein neues Land gehen,
mit alle neue Leute, sprechen die
ganze Zeit eine Sprache ich habe für
nur zwei Jahre in die Schule gelernt,
und haben eine unvergessliche Zeit.
Danke schön wieder für diese tolle
Gelegenheit.

Der Hühnerdieb - und andere Bildergschichten im Unterricht

In dem Workshop “Der Hühnerdieb und andere Bilderbücher im Deutschunterricht“
werden die Teilnehmer an das Thema durch die Arbeit mit Bildern und Bilderbüchern
herangeführt. Es werden Beispiele von spannenden, sofort einsetzbaren Aufgaben
gegeben und den Teilnehmern wird auch Zeit zur Selbsentwicklung von
Unterrichtsmaterial gelassen.
Der Workshop ist kostenlos und findet von 12Uhr30 bis 15Uhr30 in der Deutschen Schule
Ann Arbor statt.
