Praesidentenbericht
kommen Sie mal heraus!
schoeneren Wetter, einiges an Gaerterneiarbeiten
vorzunehmen.
Unsere Kinder halfen mit,
Unkraut wurde entsorgt, Mulch abgedeckt.
Andere Familien haben auch dazubeigetragen,
die verschiedenste Gaertnereiarbeiten sowie Gebaeudereperaturen zu erledigen. Allen
Freiwilligen sind in diesem Sinne zu danken.
Am Wochenende vom 10-12. Juni waren wir mit
den Donau Dancers in Frankenmuth, Michigan
zu Gast am grossen Bavarian Musikfest. Neben
den vielen Sehenswuerdigkeiten hat unsere
Gruppe die Veranstaltungen am Freitag-sowie am
Samstagabend besucht.
jedes Jahr.
Am Sonntag, den 26. Juni wurde der Klub geoeffnet,
um Mitglieder die Moeglichkeit anzubieten, den
Frauen-Fussball-Weltmeisterschaftspiel zwischen
Deutschland und Kanada zu sehen. Obwohl der
Spiel mit keinem allzugrossem Erscheinen seitens
unserer Mitgliedern beschert worden ist, waren die
Anwesenden gluecklich. Deutschland hat mit 2:1
den Spiel gewonnen.
Nun der Sommer ist endlich eingetroffen und
Mary und ich wuneschen Ihnen alle sonnigen
Tagen, kuehle Naechte und sichere Reisen!
President’s Report
The club’s activities during June illustrate how
we are still busy even when there are no annual
events taking place.
Cathy Thompson and Peter Speckner held another Film Nachmittag on June 4th and they
have another one planned for July 10th. Check
the Nachrichten for further information. The
money we have raised has allowed us to purchase a computer video projector which will be
used for Club meetings and for private events the
equipment can be rented.
The movies continue to draw large crowds. So if
you haven’t enjoyed these showings then come
on out. Not only do you see an enjoyable movie
but you are also providing the club with some
funds to make some important purchases.
June 4th was our second clean up day at the club.
The weather did not cooperate but we did a lot
more work inside the club. We have been working on preparing and painting the men’s washroom, some miscellaneous wiring and stripping
of wallpaper in the Kellar card room. Mary and
I decided to take advantage of some good weather the day before and so we grabbed our garden
tools and the kids and we spent time working on
the weeds and the mulch. I know other families
have also come on days other than our clean up
days to do some additional gardening and building maintenance. Thank you so much to all our
volunteers who have worked so hard and I know
will continue to bring their skills and hard work
to improving our building and grounds.
On the June 10th to 12th weekend I attended a Bavarian music festival in Frankenmuth
Michigan along with other members of our
Donau Dancers. The group took in the sites
and attended the Friday and Saturday evening
events. The dance group also marched in the
Sunday parade, which was well attended by visitors and the locals. The weather was threatening
rain but luck was on our side and we were able
to march without a drop falling on us. In fact the
sun came out and we ended our walk basking in
the sunshine.
During the week of June 18th to the 25th I travelled with three friends to Virginia on our mo-
torcycles. While it was great to be on vacation
it meant I unfortunately had to miss the annual
picnic. It is a rarity for me to miss this event however I heard it was well attended and everyone
had an enjoyable afternoon. I would like to thank
the Schwaben Dancers for running this function
each year.
We opened the Club on Sunday June 26th for the
Women’s World Cup Germany versus Canada
game. We did not have a large crowd but for those
that showed up we had a great time. For those
of you not following this sports event Germany
took the game with a score of 2 to 1.
Well summer is finally here. Mary and I wish
you sunny days, cool nights and safe travel.

Manager’s Report
“What’s Going On”
I know that it’s July and you are right at the
start of enjoying your summer, BUT, Oktoberfest
Tickets this year are really selling well. Don’t be
disappointed because you didn’t get your tickets in
time and missed out on coming to you favourite
Oktoberfest night here at the Schwaben Club.
Business has been fairly good so far this year and I
know that it will continue for the rest of the year.
Enjoy your summer, and I hope to see you all
again soon at one of the many events planned
this year here at the Schwaben Club.

Club picnic. It was a lovely afternoon, the weather was perfect, the food was great and we had a
singalong and bingo.

Rouladen...mmmm
I signed up for the first Schwaben Club Cooking
Class which was held on Friday, June 17, 2011.
The subject was Rouladen.
Now, I have been
cooking rouladen
for over 30 years;
why would I be interested in taking a
class on making rouladen? Well, I am so
glad that I did.
Our head instructor was Mary Hild, who has
a professional cooking background, assisted by
Kathie Geimer and Katie Kraehling. They demonstrated a totally different way of making rouladen than I had made. Their method was simple, yet created a tasty, flavourful rouladen with
a delightful gravy. I learned so much, as did our
class of 6 students.
The next cooking class will take place in
September. The topic: Cabbage Rolls.
Hope to see you there. I am sure we will all learn
something new.

A Little Fun in the Sun
We came, we saw, and it was awesome. That’s
right, we recently attended the Schwaben Club’s
annual Picnic, and what a time it was. Back at
the Wilmot Rod & Gun Club again this year, it
meant we had all the facilities needed for a great
time. And it couldn’t have been any better.
The Schwaben Dancers showed up good and
early to ensure that everything would be setup
for when everyone arrived. They even had a
PowerPoint presentation showcasing pictures of
the Schwaben Dancers in action, showing people their accomplishments. The parents of the
Kinder and Jugend groups also showed up a bit
early to have their stuff setup as well (and this
year, “their stuff ” included a Bouncy Castle!)
By the time the people started to arrive, everything was in full swing.
No picnic can succeed without great food and
drink – that’s where the Schwaben Dancers
come in. Serving BBQ’d hamburgers and sausages with optional toppings, and fresh salad
sides made for a wonderful meal. For the kids,
hotdogs and Goldfish added to the mix. And
what could be better at a picnic than cold beer
– and they had that too! Once a person finished
the main course, a trip to the dessert table rounded out the meal. And there were lots of homemade options to tempt the taste buds.
The one thing very different for this year compared to previous years was the weather. That’s
right – IT WAS PERFECT!!! The sun shone, it
was warm – it could not have been any better.
There was no rain. It wasn’t so hot, you melted
after 5 minutes. Almost everyone grabbed their
meals and ate on the picnic tables outside. There
weather was fantastic from start to finish.
Adding to the entertainment was Catherine
Thompson, playing her accordion. Bouncing
from inside to outside, she made sure to serenade
everyone with a great selection of German songs.
She even led the group inside through her trademark sing-along, giving everyone a chance to join
in the fun. Outside, the kids played games led
by the parents of both children’s dance groups,
and the men & 1 woman played in the Annual
Horseshoe Tournament. Congratulations to
Matt Kahnke and Calvin Bramley for winning
the tournament (although I’m sure Matt’s dad
enjoyed his prize more!) The final event inside
was the annual Bingo Tournament - always a bit
hit with the Ladies.
Overall, it was a perfect picnic. Nothing went
wrong. Ok, the coffee was a bit delayed because
it kept blowing the breaker. But other than that –
it was a perfect day. It is a shame that some people were unable or unwilling to attend because it
was on Father’s Day. I think any father would
have had a great time. Hopefully next year, we
can keep the “perfect weather” streak going to
“2”. See you all next year!

We, the Donau Dancers, went on a road trip. We
have wanted to visit Frankenmuth, Michigan, for a
long time and decided that now was the time.
Walter Marzinko checked out our destination and
discovered that Frankenmuth holds its Bavarian
Festival on the weekend of June 10-12. Now, that
sounded like a great idea.
Walter arranged for our rooms at a lovely hotel, the
Drury Inn. The hotel offered a free breakfast and a
free late afternoon snack which was our dinner. He
also signed us up to walk in the parade which took
place on Sunday, June 12. Thank you Walter for all
of your hard work.
We arrived on Friday and made ourselves at home
in our rooms. That night, we visited the huge tent
where the festivities took place. There was a small
midway outside and the polkas (Chicago style)
rolled out inside.
On Saturday, we did a bit of shopping; we visited
Bronner’s Christmas Store (it is huge!!) and Birch
Run Outlet Mall. Again, we danced the night away
www.pillers.com
in the tent. There was one band, the Sorgenbrecher
from Detroit, who are as good as any German band
up here. They were astounding.
Sunday, we crawled out of bed, put on our trachts and lined up for the parade. We were actually
the only dancegroup walking in the parade. The
weather went from cloudy to sunny and warm...
perfect for wearing our black trachts. After the parade, it was time to hit the road for home.
We all had a great time. Perhaps we’ll do it again
and perform in Frankenmuth.

Brumm, Julianna
Passed away at Village of Winston Park
Retirement Home on Thursday, June 16,
2011, age 89 years. Loving wife of the late
Adam Brumm, who predeceased her in March
of 2011. Dear aunt of Elisabeth (Robert
Coghill), Maria (Walter Grupp), Regina
Rossiar, Julianna (Fred Schoenhaar) and
Joseph and Renate Koch. Survived by a sisterin-law, Elisabeth Hoffmann.
Kindergruppe and
Jugendgruppe
In May, the Jugendgruppe was asked
to participate at the Polish Club for
the “Polski Dom 2011”. It was a great
opportunity for our children to experience other youth group dancers. The
perogies and colourful costumes were
the highlight of the day! We hope that
they will accept an invitation from
our dancers in the future and join us
for one of our cultural celebrations.
In June, we celebrated Father’s Day
at the Annual Schwaben Club Picnic.
The bouncy castle, games and face
painting brought many smiles to
our children’s faces. Thank you to
those who supported our raffle and
to the Schwaben dancers for hosting such a wonderful event!
Looking forward… our groups
continue to practice for Mansfield,
Ohio. Both our Kindergruppe and
Jugendgruppe will be representing
our club this year.

June 4th Reno/Gardening
At 6:00 am, the day started out bright and promising as I started to load garden, cleaning, painting and roofing supplies.
By 9:30 am, the clouds started to roll in and teardrops began falling from the heavens.
We rerouted some exposed wire, stripped some
wallpaper in the card room and scrubbed the walls
of one washroom in preparation for painting.
Around 11:00, the power went out as the wind
picked up. Buckets of rain fell and lightning
danced about the sky.
Kathie Geimer and Irma Ries of the Frauengruppe
prepared a different and delicious lunch for us in
our kitchen.
I believe everyone had fun and enjoyed the camaraderie. Thanks to all those who came out.
