(OR BACK). NO USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED
SERVICE PERSONNEL.
The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral
triangle, is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated
"dangerous voltage" within the product's enclosure that may be of
sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.
7. Water and Moisture – Do not use this product near water – for example, near a bath tub,
wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub; in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and
the like.
8. Accessories – Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand tripod, bracket, or
table. The product may fall, causing serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage
to the product. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the
manufacturer, or sold with the product. Any mounting of the product should follow the
manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the
manufacturer.
9. A product and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive

operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating instruction.
12. Grounding or Polarization – This product may be equipped with a polarized alternatingcurrent line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into the
power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully
into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your
electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the
polarizes plug.
13. Power-Cord Protection – Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not
likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular
attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and point where they exit from the
product.
14. Protective Attachment Plug – the product is equipped with an attachment plug having
overload protection. This is a safety feature. See Instruction Manual for replacement or
resetting of protective device. If replacement of the plug is required, be sure the service
technician has used a replacement plug specified by the manufacturer that has the same
overload protection as the original plug.
15. Outdoor Antenna Grounding – If an outside antenna is connected to the receiver, be
sure the antenna system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage
surges and built-up static charges. Article 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA
70, provides information with regard to proper grounding of the mast and supporting
structure, grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to
an antenna-discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge
unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.
power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should
be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them might be
fatal.
18. Overloading – Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience
receptacles as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
19. Object and Liquid Entry – Never push objects of any kind into this product through
openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result
in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
20. Servicing – Do not attempt to service this product yourself as opening or removing
covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to
qualified service personnel.
21. Damage Requiring Service – Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer
servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
a) When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged,
b) If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the product,
c) If the product has been exposed to rain or water,
d) If the product does not operate normally by following the operating
instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating

Using and Training Voice Commands
L Special Note To First Time Users 7
Please read the following before training voice commands:
While the inVoca Clock Radio employs the latest state-ofthe-art in speech recognition, it will nonetheless have
difficulty recognizing commands if two people are speaking
at once or if there is other background noise. Before
training the inVoca Clock Radio to recognize your voice
commands, please be sure the room is reasonably quiet and
lower the radio volume.
Please remember to speak the same when you are training the
inVoca Clock Radio as you will when you actually are using
the clock radio. If, like many new users, you speak unusually
clearly and slowly during training, the clock radio may not
recognize your commands in actual use. For consistent
results, speak naturally at all times! As with all voice
operated products, you will achieve the best results with
practice. You should try to be the same distance from the
clock radio during training as you will when you are using it,
and train the clock radio in the same room as you will be
using it in. You will have the best results if you are 12" - 30"
from the inVoca Clock Radio microphone when using voice
commands.
If you tend to play the radio loudly or will be more than 30"
from the clock radio, you will enjoy best results with the
external microphone. See page 14 for details. Please
remember to train voice commands after plugging in the
external microphone.
Training the inVoca Clock Radio to respond to voice commands
allows you to take full advantage of this unique clock radio, turning
the alarm on and off and selecting radio stations, all without lifting
a finger! To train a command, press and release the [train]
button, then follow the voice prompts.
For example, if you have already assigned preset button
to 96.3
FM (WQXR in New York), and you want the radio to go to this
station when you say "QXR":
You Do This
Press the [Train] button
inVoca Clock Radio will say,
"Say a word." When the inVoca is
ready to listen, the LED on the
periscope will light green, and the
Listening icon on the display will
be lit.
Say a voice command. In
The inVoca Clock Radio will ask

You Do This
Since you have now
completed the sequence,
press the [Train] button.
inVoca Response
Since you have created a sequence
of more than one button, inVoca
will say, "macro assigned."
The voice-command QXR is now assigned to the button sequence
[FM] ÿ
, and is equivalent to pressing the [FM] button, then the
button.
You may repeat this sequence to assign voice commands to any of
your preset buttons. Remember, you may assign any easy-toremember name to a button, not just a station name. Try to choose
voice commands that are distinct from one another. Multi-syllable
or two-word commands work better than short words because the
inVoca Clock Radio will have more information to work with and
can better understand the command.
When programming voice commands to radio station presets, avoid
starting station names with the letter "W." This may make it difficult
for the clock radio to distinguish between stations. Better yet, don't
try to remember station names. Use easy-to-remember names such
as "Jazz FM," "News Radio," or "Yankee Baseball."
L Remember: The inVoca Clock Radio is only listening when the
LED is Green or Orange. Pressing and releasing the [Listen]
button activates the listening feature. Pressing and releasing the
[Listen] button a second time will turn off the listening feature.
L The inVoca Clock Radio cannot listen for commands while it is
busy with other operations such as turning on your TV or playing
the rooster sound.
To assign the word "Snooze" to the [on/off] button (so you can get
a few more precious minutes of sleep without fumbling in the dark
for the snooze button):
inVoca Clock Radio User's Guide - Page 13
You Do This
inVoca Response
Press the [Train] button
The inVoca Clock Radio will say,
"Say a word." When the inVoca
Clock Radio is ready to listen, the
LED on the periscope will light
green, and the Listening icon on
the display will be lit.
Say "Snooze."
"Repeat."
Say "Snooze" again.
If the two words match, the Clock
Radio will say "Press a button."
Press [on/off] within 15
seconds.
"Button accepted. Press another
button."
Press the [Train] button.
"Button assigned."
Using this procedure you can assign a voice command to any
button or any combination of buttons ("macros"). For more
examples of useful voice commands, see page 15.
External Microphone
Because the radio speaker is located closer to the internal
microphone than you will be, if the radio is loud it will interfere with
voice recognition. You will obtain the optimum performance with
the external microphone.
To use the external microphone, plug the microphone into the
microphone jack located on the back of the radio and place the
microphone as far from the radio as practical. Suggested locations
include hanging the microphone on the back of your night table or
taping the microphone to your closest bedpost. You may wish to
experiment with different microphone locations for best results.
Erasing (see page 20), then re-training voice commands after
switching to the external microphone is strongly recommended. For
best results, record the new voice commands from as close to where
you will actually be when using the radio as possible.

Personalities/Word Spotting (Keywords)
L The inVoca Clock Radio supports up to 2 Personalities. If only
one person is to use the inVoca Clock Radio, personalities are not
required. However, the personalities feature includes WordSpotting, a powerful voice recognition technology which allows the
clock radio to recognize commands even in the middle of a sentence.
Word Spotting is particularly useful if the inVoca Clock Radio is
responding to background conversation in the room or if the radio
is very loud, and adjusting the microphone position does not help.
The inVoca Clock Radio will automatically operate in the
Personalities/Word Spotting mode when you have programmed a
keyword.
If you saw the classic movie 2001, you might remember
HAL would only respond to commands when preceded
by the word, 'HAL.' Similarly, in the Star Trek series,
commands such as 'Lights On' would only be
inVoca Clock Radio User's Guide - Page 16
recognized if preceded by 'Computer.'
examples of Word Spotting operation.
These are
If just one person is using the clock radio, you may use a Word
Spotting keyword such as "inVoca" or "Simon Says."
When two Personalities are programmed, the inVoca Clock Radio
can learn independent voice commands for each person and each
person can program the inVoca Clock Radio for his or her favorite
voice-selected station presets. Examples of keywords when there
are two users are: "Dad's inVoca" and "Mom's Radio."
After it hears a keyword, the inVoca Clock Radio will only search
for voice commands for the currently active personality, and ignore
all other words, increasing voice recognition accuracy especially
when more than one person will be using the clock radio. When the
inVoca Clock Radio hears a keyword it will mute the radio for 3
seconds to further improve its listening capability.
After you program the inVoca Clock Radio with a keyword and
press the >/LVWHQ@ button, the LED will light orange to let you
know that it is listening for a keyword. When it recognizes the
keyword the LED will then turn green indicating the clock radio is
now listening for a command.

keyword."
Selecting Personalities
If you press >OLVWHQ@ the clock radio will remember which
personality used it last.
If two people are using the inVoca clock radio, you may let the
Clock Radio know that it needs to select between the two
personalities by pressing
ÿ [Listen]. After pressing
ÿ
[Listen] the LED will turn orange and the inVoca Clock Radio
will wait for you to identify the personality that you now wish to
use. If the clock radio recognizes the keyword, it will change the
LED to green and listen for voice commands for the selected
personality. The clock radio will remain programmed for the
selected personality until you press
ÿ [Listen] again.
L You can assign the key sequence
ÿ [Listen] to a spoken
command (such as "user") for totally hands free operation.
L When you create a new personality, it will not have any voice
commands associated with it. Before you can use the personality,
you will need to train voice commands for that personality.
Note: you will usually enjoy the best results in actual operation if
you precede the keyword you have trained with another word such
as "hello." For example, if your programmed keyword is "inVoca,"
you might say, "Hello inVoca..." when issuing commands.
Microphone Sensitivity
You may adjust the microphone sensitivity with the slide switch
located in the rear of the clock radio. You may wish to lower the
sensitivity if the clock radio is responding to background
conversation or sound from the radio. Increase the sensitivity if the
clock radio is having trouble hearing your voice.
LCD Display
The easy-to-read LCD display shows the current time as well as the
status of the clock radio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. The inVoca Clock Radio is having trouble recognizing a word
that I have programmed. What should I do?
A. The problem could be that there was a background noise when
you recorded the word or you picked a word that is difficult for
inVoca Clock Radio to recognize. See Using and Training Voice
Commands (Page 12) for hints on choosing words. To see if there
was some background noise when you recorded the command, try
training the command again. If the inVoca Clock Radio responds
with "Choose a different word," simply erase the command by
ÿ [train], then re-training the command. Try to
pressing
have the radio (and television) volume off when you train inVoca
Clock Radio. Otherwise, the noise from the radio will become part
of the voice “template.”
You may also be speaking the command differently than when you
trained inVoca Clock Radio . This is common, particularly with new
users who speak especially carefully when first training the clock
radio. Again, the best solution is to erase the command as described
above, and re-train the command speaking clearly and naturally. For
example, if you train "ABC" as A-pause B-pause C, you should then
include the pauses when actually using the Clock Radio.
You should always try to be the same distance from the microphone
while you are training the clock radio as you will in actual operation,
and train the clock radio in the same room as you will be using it in
due to room to room variations in acoustics.
Orange

Q. The inVoca Clock Radio said "too long" while I was training a
command. What happened?
Green
inVoca is listening for remote commands. When it
hears a word, it will flash off briefly while it
compares the word it has heard with the stored
vocabulary.
A. A voice command may not be more than two seconds long. If
you talk more than two seconds, or if there was a long background
noise while you were training a command or the clock radio was
listening for a command, it will say "too long."

commands (see page 20) or erase all programming (page 20). You
will also get this message if you try to program more than two
personalities (keywords).
Q. I cannot hear the clock radio prompts.
Q. The clock radio keeps saying, "too soft" when I train it.
A. The volume for the prompts is controlled by the radio volume
knob located on top of the inVoca Clock Radio.
A. Try speaking louder or positioning the external microphone
closer to your mouth. Make sure the microphone sensitivity switch
(located in the back of the clock radio) is set to "high."

Q. I pressed
Then, when I said the new keyword, the clock radio beeped and shut
off the listen icon.
Q. The inVoca Clock Radio keeps responding to words it hears on
the radio or in background conversations.
A. When you create a new personality, it will not have any voice
commands associated with it and is not ready for use. Before you
can use the personality, you will need to train voice commands for
that personality.
A. Turn on the Personalities/Word Spotting feature described on
page 16. Try setting the microphone sensitivity switch (located in
the back of the clock radio) to "low."
Q. I pressed the [Listen] button, but inVoca does not respond to
voice commands.
A. inVoca will not respond to any voice commands until it has been
trained.
Q. Is there anyway to make the inVoca Clock Radio stop listening
for commands after I press the [Listen] button?
Q. The clock radio sometimes has trouble distinguishing between
radio station names such as WABC and WNBC.
A. Try to avoid using radio station call letters that begin with the
same letter. These can be difficult for the clock radio to distinguish.
Better choices would be descriptive names such as, "Jazz FM,"
"News Radio," or "Yankee Baseball."
Q. My clock radio alarm turns on the television, but after a few
moments the television turns back off.
A. If you press the [Listen] button when the clock radio is already
listening, listening will be turned off.
A. Call the inVoca Clock Radio support line at 1 (800) 200-7700.
Q. My inVoca Clock Radio does not turn on my TV.
Q. Where can I find more helpful hints about my inVoca Clock
Radio?
A. Make sure the IR emitter is pointing toward the television and
there is nothing blocking the path from the clock radio to the
television.
A. Visit the inVoca Web site at www.invoca.com.
Q. I tried to train a new command and inVoca said, "Memory full."
A. The clock radio is capable of storing up to 25 voice commands.
You have exceeded that limit. Either erase some individual
