Since 2002 urban art info has been showcasing projects by local and
international artists, whose practice focuses on social relations,
architectural situations and hidden phenomena in the urban context.
These mainly conceptual works cleverly use the structures of the outdoor
space without previous solicitation. In addition urban art info presents
and distributes publications by the artists exhibiting in the gallery
and produces its own artist books and editions. These stand-alone
publications are completely based on their authors’ ideas. So far they
have always been published on the occasion of an exhibition at the
gallery.

Conduct of AKV – The members of AKV decided to create a vehicle to develop alternative publication methods. In 2008 a publishing house with an
official face was founded. The publications to date relate to the following subjects: examinations of the gap between image and text, experimental journalism, urban semiotics, practices around the appropriation
of space, investigative documentation, and explorations of archives and
biographies.
Authorship – The existing publications have been produced by authors and
collectives working anonymously as well as under their real name. AKV
believes that the role of the authorship constitutes an integral element of the transmitted information, and thus has to be interlinked with
the text-image-production, because it constitutes an integral part of
the transmitted information. The publishing house welcomes experimental
author-concepts leaving the conventional notions of the originator behind. By rearranging the relation of author and publisher AKV develops
an unprecedented scope of notations and narrative voices as well as
untested modes of connecting texts and images.
urban art info zeigt seit 2002 Positionen lokaler wie internationaler
KünstlerInnen, die sich in ihrer Arbeit mit sozialen Beziehungen,
architektonischen Situationen und verborgenen Phänomenen im städtischen
Kontext auseinandersetzen. Die überwiegend konzeptuellen Arbeiten nutzen
geschickt und unaufgefordert die Strukturen des Außenraumes. Darüber
hinaus zeigt und vertreibt urban art info Publikationen der in ihrer
Galerie ausstellenden Künstler und produziert auch eigene Künstlerbücher
sowie Editionen. Diese eigenständigen Publikationen sind frei nach den
Vorstellungen der jeweiligen Autoren gestaltet und erschienen bisher stets
im Zusammenhang mit einer Ausstellung.

Handlungsweise des AKV – Um alternative Publikationsmöglichkeiten zu erschließen, entschieden sich die jetzt unter dem Namen AKV kenntlichen
Personen, ein Vehikel zu erschaffen. 2008 entstand ein Verlagswesen mit
offizieller Fassade, das verschiedene Veröffentlichungen verwirklichte,
die an folgende Bereiche anknüpfen: Versuche im Bild-Text-Zwischenraum,
experimenteller Journalismus, urbane Semiotik, Raumaneignungspraktiken,
investigative Dokumentation, Biographie- und Archivauseinandersetzungen.
Autorschaft – Der Verlag publizierte Werke von Autoren und Kollektiven,
die sowohl anonym als auch unter bürgerlichen Namen veröffentlichen. Der
AKV vertritt die Auffassung, dass die Rolle der Autorschaft ebenfalls in
die Text-Bild-Produktion eingewebt werden muss, da sie letztlich ein integraler Bestandteil der transmittierten Information ist. Der Verlag begrüßt
experimentelle Autorenkonzepte, welche die konventionellen Pfade des Urhebers verlassen. Durch Neuanordnungen im Autor-Herausgeber-Gefüge werden
unerhörte Spielräume von Notationen und Erzählstimmen als auch unerprobte
Modi der Verknüpfung von Bild und Text entwickelt.

Archive Books is a publishing house committed to the development of
a range of activities dedicated to contemporary cultural production
founded in 2007 by Chiara Figone. Through its publications Archive Books
explores and conveys art publications as a method to bring art practices
into the public discussion. It aims to produce and distribute printed
materials, which allows the creation and the maintenance of a dialogue
between cultural research and social sphere. In 2008, Archive Journal was
launched, bringing together scholarly and theoretical articles from the
fields of art, architecture, and politics to create a cross-disciplinary
discourse. Archive Books also organizes a series of cultural events in
Berlin, at Archive Kabinett, editorial office of the publishing house
and elsewhere.

Corrections and Clarifications is an ongoing newsprint project, an edited
compilation of daily newspaper corrections from September 2001 to
the present. It is an intermittent interrogation into the detection,
acknowledgment, and retraction of errors organized into a reverse
chronology, that is, correcting each day what has been printed the
day before. A catalogue of lapses in naming and tangling of catchphrases, Corrections and Clarifications suggests a more than incidental
relation between news mis-speak and consolidated media interests.
Previous editions have examined the printed news media in the US, UK
(as well as other international press in Australia and Asia printed
in English), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and more recently, that of
Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia.

Anita Di Biancos Corrections and Clarifications sind ein fortlaufendes Zeitungsprojekt, in dem korrigierte Falschmeldungen aus Tageszeitungen seit
September 2001 bis heute zusammengestellt werden. Anita Di Bianco nennt
es eine zeitweilige, chronologisch rückwärts laufende Untersuchung des
Erkennens und Widerrufens von Fehlern: Jeden Tag etwas zu berichtigen, was
am vorherigen Tag gedruckt worden ist. Als ein Verzeichnis von Inkorrekt­
heiten und undurchdringlichen Schlagwörtern suggeriert Corrections and
Clarifications eine mehr als bloß zufällige Verbindung zwischen Nachrich­
­
ten­
versprechern und konsolidierten Medieninteressen. In vergangenen Ausgaben
wurden Printmedien aus den USA, Großbritannien (sowie andere internationale, englischsprachige Zeitungen aus Australien und Asien), Deutschland,
Österreich, der Schweiz sowie in jüngerer Vergangenheit auch aus Bosnien,
Serbien, Kroatien und Slovenien untersucht.

The Archive of Modern Conflict started publishing in 2004, producing
several books jointly with Chris Boot. These include Lodz Ghetto Album,
edited by Timothy Prus and Martin Parr and featuring the photographs
of Henryk Ross, Larry Towell’s No Man’s Land and The British Landscape
by John Davies. AMC’s 2007 publication Nein, Onkel, edited by Ed
Jones and Timothy Prus, won the Arles 2008 Historical Book Award. The
Corinthians, by the same editors, followed. Recent AMC books are Happy
Tonite (surveying contemporary Chinese photography) by Ed Jones and
James Welch, and LDN by Antony Cairns.
argobooks ist aus einer mehr als 15-jährigen Zusammenarbeit

Der Verlag Archive of Modern Conflict publiziert seit 2004 und hat bisweilen
eine Reihe von Büchern zusammen mit Chris Boot produziert, darunter Lodz

In 1988 Barbara Wien started a bookshop for artists’ books, art books,
writings by artists, rare books since 1960 (Fluxus, Conceptual Art, artists’
movements since 1960), conceptual photography books, editions, multiples,
graphic art, videos, and DVDs, and a gallery. Meanwhile around 40 artists’
books have been published. Barbara Wien edited in 1994 the collected texts
by Arthur Köpcke and in 2002 the collected interviews by Dieter Roth (copublishers Hansjörg Mayer and Walther König). Since 2009 Wilma Lukatsch
is the co-partner of Barbara Wien in the gallery, bookshop and publishing
house. Amongst other publishing projects Wien and Lukatsch edited and
published the interview book Tomas Schmit / Wilma Lukatsch, Dreizehn
Montagsgespräche. In 2009 they founded the tomas schmit archiv, Berlin.
Further editing projects: published and unpublished texts by Tomas Schmit
and – together with Kai Vollmer – the construction of a website with the
Tomas Schmit œuvre catalogue.

Im Jahr 1988 gründete Barbara Wien eine Buchhandlung mit Galerie für Künstlerbücher, Kunstbücher, Künstlertexte, Seltenheiten aus den Bewegungen seit
den 1960er Jahren (wie Fluxus, Konzeptkunst etc.), konzeptuelle Fotobücher,
limitierte Auflagen, Grafikkunst, Videos und DVDs. Mittlerweile wurden ca. 40
Künstlerbücher veröffentlicht. 1994 gab Barbara Wien die gesammelten Texte
von Arthur Köpcke und 2002 die gesammelten Interviews mit Dieter Roth (mit
Hansjörg Mayer und Walther König als Mitherausgebern) heraus. Seit 2009 ist
Wilma Lukatsch Partnerin der Galerie, Buchhandlung und dem Verlag Barbara
Wien. Neben weiteren Veröffentlichungsprojekten haben Wien und Lukatsch den
Interview-Band Tomas Schmit / Wilma Lukatsch, Dreizehn Montagsgespräche herausgegeben und veröffentlicht. 2009 gründeten sie außerdem das tomas schmit
archiv, Berlin. Weitere Verlagsprojekte: veröffentlichte und unveröffentlichte Texte von Tomas Schmit und – gemeinsam mit Kai Vollmer – der Aufbau
einer Webseite mit dem Werkverzeichnis von Tomas Schmit.

Boekie Woekie entstand 1986 als eine Buchhandlung für die Bücher der
sie gründenden Künstler (die bis dahin bereits ihre eigenen Bücher
in unabhängiger Arbeit publiziert hatten). Ab 1991 entwickelte
sich Boekie Woekie dann zu der breiten Plattform, wie man sie heute
kennt. Die drei Künstler, die Boekie Woekie derzeit betreiben,
gehörten bereits zu den sechs ursprünglichen Gründern von 1986.
Als Verleger kümmern sie sich vor allem um ihre eigenen Bücher,
aber wenn es die Zeit erlaubt, publizieren sie auch, was immer sie
für interessant halten.

those six artists who founded it (and who had previously been
publishing their own books independently). From 1991 onwards, it
developed into the broad platform it is now. The three artists
who run it today were among the six from 1986. As publishers
their own books are their main concern but if they find the time
they publish whatever they find interesting.

Die 1984 gegründete Organisation Book Works vergibt Aufträge an Künstler
und ist ein auf Künstlerbücher spezialisierter Verlag. Book Works fördert
Neuproduktionen junger KünstlerInnen und initiiert Projekte sowohl
durch Einladung und offene Ausschreibung als auch in Zusammenarbeit
mit GastkuratorInnen. Book Works verbindet die Verlagsarbeit mit
der Inauftraggabe von Kunstwerken sowie mit einer Werkstatt, die auf
Buchbindungen, Schuber-Produktionen und Multiples spezialisiert ist.
Neben regelmäßigen Veröffentlichungen, Ausstellungen und dem Aufbau eines
Online-Archivs veranstalten Verlag und Werkstatt gemeinsame Vortragsreihen
sowie verschiedene Künstler-Workshops.

We have been publishing this independent, international publication on
contemporary art and theory since 2002. Every issue is printed in a
different font, which lends its name as the title. Each year we publish 3
- 4 issues in an edition of 300 copies. The magazine is seen as a medium
which consolidates texts, interviews, image series and found material

Established in 1984, Book Works is a commissioning organization
specializing in artists’ books and projects. Dedicated to supporting new
work by emerging artists, our projects are initiated by invitation, open
submission, and through guest-curated projects. Book Works consists of
a publishing and commissioning department; and a studio specializing in
binding, box-making and multiples. Our activities include publishing,
a lecture and seminar program, exhibitions, the development of an online archive, and artists’ surgeries and workshops held by both the
publishing department and the studio.
Seit 2002 veröffentlichen wir diese unabhängige, internationale Publikation
zur zeitgenössischen Kunst und Theorie. Jede Ausgabe ist in einer anderen
Schrift gedruckt und trägt deren Namen als Titel. Pro Jahr erscheinen 3
- 4 Ausgaben in einer Auflage von 300 Stück. Die Zeitschrift versteht sich
als Medium, in dem sich Texte, Interviews, Bildstrecken und gefundenes
Material zu einem Ganzen verdichten. Auf thematische Schwerpunkte wird
bewusst verzichtet um den im Moment vorhandenen und zum Teil divergierenden
Diskursen Raum zu geben und Widersprüche oder Konflikte zwischen Beiträgen
nicht zu verhindern. Jedes neue Heft wird mit einer nichtkommerziellen
Releaseparty in Verbindung mit Ausstellungen, Performances und Konzerten
präsentiert.

Da meine künstlerische Arbeit auf fotografischen Archiven basiert, stellt
das Buch für mich den idealen Ort zur Präsentation meiner Bildarrangements
dar, die ich als eigenständige Arbeit betrachte. Verlegerin zu werden war
für mich eine Notwendigkeit, um bei formalen Entscheidungen gänzlich frei
zu sein und nichtkommerzielle Ideen verfolgen und durchsetzen zu können.
Trotz der ökonomischen Realität von hohen Druckkosten suche ich Wege
unabhängig zu bleiben – auch dann, wenn ich Koproduktionen eingehe. Es
findet eine regelmäßige Zusammenarbeit zwischen éditions doc-cd und anderen
KünstlerInnen statt.

As my artistic work is based on photographic archives, I favor the book
as the best space to present my picture arrangements, considering it as
a work in itself. Becoming a publisher was a necessity for me in order
to keep a total freedom over decisions about form and to be able to
take on and stand up for noncommercial ideas. Dealing with the economic
reality of the high printing costs, I strive to find solutions to remain
independent, even when it comes to co-publishing. Collaborations with
other artists are frequent at éditions doc-cd.
Meine Arbeit ergiesst sich wie ein Wasserfall, entschieden homosexuell –
ein Gebräu aus Perlen und Pelz, Heraldik und Handarbeit, Nietengürteln und
Blumengirlanden. Sie kommt daher als Erdrutsch aus oppulentem Trash, aus
Paisley und Pinienzapfen, ein derangierter, nachgereichter Lagebericht aus der
Freudenkuppel, dem Pleasure Dome. Die Dekadenz des Buquets ist beabsichtigt; sie
ist die Öffnung zum Reich des Fantastischen, des Exzessiven, des Sexuellen sowie
des Traurigen - eine Phantasmagorie, angesiedelt im Kontext radikalen, queeren
Esprits, Geschichte und Politik. Als Transsexuelle/r und Feminist/in möchte ich,
dass die Inhalte meiner Arbeit jenes unerklärliche und transzendente Element
der Sexualität vermitteln, das sich jenseits von Gender und Genitalien befindet:
nämlich dort, wo Berührung und aufgenommene Fühlung umfassend und fließend sind.
Als Künstler/in und Aktivist/in faszinieren mich Abstraktion und Neuorganisation
von Sprache und Landschaft im Spannungsfeld von Vorstellungen über Gemeinschaft
und Autonomie. Befeuert durch meine Zugeneigtheit zu utopischen Ideen, sprießen
überall Komplexe und Komplikationen, verquicken und ergießen sich in Zeichnungen
und Buchprojekten – Schauplätze für das stets neu zu verhandelnde Nebeneinander
von strahlender Liebe und sengender Wut der schwulen Psyche.
My work cascades out, decidedly homosexual – a stew of pearls and fur,
heraldry, hands and handiwork, studded belts and garlands of flowers. It comes
on as a landslide of opulent trash, of paisley and pinecones, a disheveled
post-inaugural report back from the Pleasure Dome. The decadence of the
bouquet is intentional; it is a doorway to a realm of the fantastical,
excessive, sexual and sad – a phantasmagoria that exists in the context of
radical queer wit, history, and politics. As a transsexual and feminist,
I am concerned with the content of my work conveying the inexplicable and
transcendent aspect of sexuality that goes beyond gender and genitalia, where
touch and contact are encompassing and fluid. As an artist and activist, I am
interested in the abstraction and reorganization of language and landscape
around concomitant ideas of community and autonomy. Fueled by my taste for
utopian thinking, complications abound, combine and compound into drawing and
book work negotiating the coexistence of radiating love and searing fury in
the gay psyche.

My first publication Prospekte was released in 1994/95 as a collection
of leporellos. These layouts were meant to be sketches of daily life
scenarios. The catalogue of the material I used was based on found
footage; mostly anonymous photographs or pictures from magazines.
Since then I have continued editing different sorts of visuals
turning printed matter into art work; such as books and booklets,
flyers, posters and postcards.

To date, 94 books have been published, which could all be described
as “rare books” – not only because of their small print runs, but
also because it was always intended to publish unique books; books
that did not exist before, and that no one else would publish.
The Edition Patrick Frey works in close collaboration with mainly Swiss
but also international artists. The area of impact of the books was
always meant to cross boundaries. Above all it is the aim of the Edition
Patrick Frey to provide young artists with an opportunity and a platform
for a first publication. Currently eight books are produced each year
focussing on photography, art, and projects addressing everyday and
popular culture.
Meine erste Publikation Prospekte habe ich 1994/95 als eine LeporelloSammlung veröffentlicht, in denen ich Alltagsszenen skizzierte.
Das dafür verwendete Material fußte auf Found-Footage – meist
anonyme Fotografien und Bilder aus Zeitschriften. Seitdem stelle ich
verschiedenartiges Bildmaterial her, indem ich Bücher, Hefte, Flyer,
Poster und Postkarten editiere und drucke.

als „rare books“, seltene Bücher, bezeichnen, nicht nur, weil es meistens
kleine Auflagen sind, sondern auch, weil es schon immer darum ging seltene
Bücher zu verlegen, die es so noch nicht gab und die auch sonst niemand
publizieren würde. Von Anfang an arbeitete die Edition Patrick Frey vor allem
mit Schweizer, aber auch mit internationalen AutorInnen. Das Wirkungsfeld
der Bücher war immer grenzüberschreitend ausgerichtet. Besonders jungen
KünstlerInnen will die Edition Patrick Frey mit einer ersten Publikation
eine Chance und Plattform bieten. Zurzeit werden acht Bücher pro Jahr
produziert, fokussiert auf Fotografie, Kunst und Projekte aus dem Bereich
der Alltagskultur und des Populären.

Dutch artists and non-academic free-style researchers Rob Hamelijnck and
Nienke Terpsma are best known as editors of Fucking Good Art, a periodic
publication or art magazine founded in 2003 – first issue December 2003.
It is sometimes described as a “zine” published both on paper and online.
In the past, the artists settled for shorter or longer periods in, among
other places, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Copenhagen, Riga, Basel, Zurich,
São Paulo, and Tbilisi to make editions of Fucking Good Art on the basis
of the local (art) context and in a constantly changing collective of
makers (artists) and thinkers (writers, curators…). In addition, FGA
makes web radio broadcasts and artist’s editions.

gallery. In newspapers, workshops, radiobroadcasts, books and posters I
am exploring the elasticity of language, rumour and my ambiguous position
of being both drawn to and repelled by information. At Miss Read I will
launch my recent project I Wonder What the Silence Was About, a series of
interventions around the disappearance of the English art practitioners
Art in Ruins. In 2009 I co-founded AND publishing together with Lynn Harris
as a tool to develop, print and display artists’ publications using quick
and immediate print processes that allow for experimentation and short
runs. AND is currently based at Central Saint Martins College of Art and
Design as a reactive site for multiple roles and functions within an Art
College.

store initiated by Temporary Services. Temporary Services is a group
of three people (Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer). We

by ourselves and others. We are interested in using this endeavor
to build long-term support and expanded audiences for people that

mediabus ist ein unabhängiger Verlag aus Seoul, Korea, der 2007 von freien
Kuratoren in Zusammenarbeit mit Designern gegründet wurde. mediabus

If a book paraphrases one explicit historical or contemporary predecessor
in title, style and/or content, this technique is what I would call a
“greatest hit”. —M.P.
“How beggarly little is left us, yes, how really nothing! Everything
has been removed,” writes Max Stirner in Der Einzige und sein Eigentum.
Everything, that is, in the case of Michalis Pichler’s edition of the
book, save the first person pronouns. By the grace of Pichler’s conjuring,
those words haunt Stirner’s otherwise repressed text, floating against the
white sheets of the page. Remaindered, the rendered I remains (remains
to be seen). Haunting, in fact (as Jacques Derrida notes in Spectres de
Marx), is at the heart of Stirner’s work. But what murder has left us
with this specter avenging the desecration of the partially buried body

entrückt worden“, schreibt Max Stirner in Der Einzige und sein Eigentum.
Im Falle von Michalis Pichlers Edition des Buches: Alles, bis auf die
Personalpronomen der ersten Person. Nach Pichlers Beschwörung suchen
jene Worte Stirners ansonsten unterdrückten Text heim, treiben auf der
Blattweiße der Seiten. Zum Verbliebenen geworden, steht das wiedergegebene
Ich (verbleibt noch dahin). Spukerei, tatsächlich (wie Derrida in Spectres
de Marx anmerkt), steht im Kern von Stirners Werk. Aber welcher Mord hat
uns zurückgelassen mit diesem Gespenst, das die Schändung des teilweise

Meta-Comics Presents/Independent Parasite
Meta-Comics started in March of 2004, after its founder began publishing
his own comics. From making short photocopied works, Baers quickly moved
to producing offset lithographic work. Since that time, Meta-Comics
has produced six offset litho publications, mainly on newsprint. In
aggregate, these ordinarily appear in exhibitions as mutable sculptures,
altered through the act of circulation. They have, from time to time,
also appeared in more stable guises. In recent years, much of Michael
Baers’ artistic activity has involved contributing to other publication
endeavours (such as Fucking Good Art, Chto Delat, E-Flux Journal, and
SUM), where he has sought to maintain his autonomy in such sometimes
slightly compromised positions. In this role he has begun to conceptualize
his activities as independent parasitism.

Meta-Comics gibt es seit März 2004, als der Verlagsgründer Michael Baers
begann seine eigenen Comics selbst herauszubringen. Aus anfangs noch dünnen,
fotokopierten Heften wurden rasch Offset-Lithografiedrucke. Mittlerweile
blickt Meta-Comics auf sechs Offset-Litho-Veröffentlichungen zurück, die
meist auf Zeitungspapier gedruckt wurden. In ihrer Gesamtheit erscheinen
diese im Rahmen von Ausstellungen gewöhnlich als wandelbare Skulpturen, die
sich durch den Akt der Zirkulation verändern. Gelegentlich kann man diese
Werke allerdings auch in stabilerer Gestalt antreffen. In jüngeren Jahren
hat sich Michael Baers künstlerisch auch an anderen Veröffentlichungen
beteiligt (z.B. Fucking Good Art, Chto Delat, E-Flux Journal und SUM),
wo er aber trotzdem versucht seine Unabhängigkeit auch in dieser etwas
eingeschränkteren Situation zu bewahren. Diese Rolle brachte ihn letztlich
dazu, seine Handlungen als unabhängigen Parasitismus zu begreifen.

Mladen Stilinović
Mladen Stilinović became interested in visual art in the early seventies,
after he had already been writing poetry and making experimental films
for some time. His early books (1972/73) contained words and collages on
plastic bags. Virtually all his books are made by hand using available
materials and technologies—very simple, ordinary, and “poor,” in the
spirit of conceptual art. To date, Stilinović has produced more than
160 artists’ books. He drew his topics from society, by decoding
verbal and visual clichés and subjecting them to an ironic twist.
The artist often speaks about the power relations involved in the
most subtle mechanisms of everyday life. His topics are at the same
time omnipresent and eternal, for they are the myths of civilization:
work, time, money, communication, and art. His investigations of
language and its production in various contexts (such as communist
and post-communist societies) contribute further to this polyphony.
Mörel Books ist ein unabhängiger Verlag aus London, der sich auf
limitierte Kunstbücher und -hefte spezialisiert hat. Ende 2008
gegründet, verlegt Mörel bekannte als auch junge KünstlerInnen und

Mladen Stilinovićs Interesse an visueller Kunst wurde in den frühen 1970er
Jahren geweckt, nachdem er bereits seit einiger Zeit Gedichte geschrieben
und Experimentalfilme gemacht hatte. Seine frühen Bücher (1972/73) enthielten
Worte und Kollagen auf Plastiktüten. So gut wie alle seine Bücher sind
handgearbeitet und greifen auf die jeweils verfügbaren Materialien
und Technologien zurück – sehr einfach, normal und „arm“ im Sinne der
Konzeptkunst. Bis zum heutigen Tag hat Stilinović mehr als 160 Künstlerbücher
produziert. Seine Themen bezieht er aus der Gesellschaft, indem er verbale
und visuelle Klischees entschlüsselt und mit einem ironischen Unterton
versieht. Oftmals thematisiert der Künstler Machtbeziehungen, die sich
bis in die allerfeinsten Alltagsmechanismen hindurchziehen. Stilinovićs
Arbeit scheint sowohl etwas Allgegenwärtiges als auch Ewiges anzuhaften,
denn es handelt sich um die Mythen unserer Zivilisation: Arbeit, Zeit,
Geld, Kommunikation und Kunst. Seine Untersuchungen im Hinblick auf die
Sprache und ihre Produktion innerhalb unterschiedlicher Kontexte (z.B. in
kommunistischen bzw. post-kommunistischen Gesellschaften) tragen nurmehr
zu dieser Polyphonie bei.

no press entstand im Jahre 2005, nachdem ich mein voriges Verlagsprojekt
housepress (1997-2004) beendet hatte. no press widmet sich der
Veröffentlichung experimenteller, konkreter und konzeptueller Lyrik und
Poetik. Die Bücher werden in Auflagen zwischen 5 und 100 Stück produziert
und sind meist handgebunden. Mich interessiert der verlegerische Prozess
als poetisches Moment – wenn der Autor die Produktionsmittel übernimmt
und auch an der Gestaltung seiner oder ihrer Arbeit beteiligt ist.
Founded in Poland in 2005, Piktogram is a bilingual (Polish/English)
magazine featuring a mixture of artists’ contributions, found and
previously unpublished visual material as well as texts on subjects
ranging from art, architecture, film and design to science and fiction.
It confronts contemporary ideas with little-known, rediscovered
phenomena created in the context of Eastern Europe during the Communist
era. Piktogram is an ”exhibition“ in the form of a magazine. In
addition to publishing, Piktogram/Bureau of Loose Associations are
organizing exhibitions, film screenings, events, and film and book
releases on DVD. They are also cooperating with other publishers such
as MORAVA BOOKS.

I founded no press in 2005, after closing my previous publishing venture
housepress, 1997-2004. no press is dedicated to the publication of
experimental, concrete and conceptual poetry and poetics. Books are

Poetically, I am interested in what happens in the publishing process
– when the writer takes the means of production and is involved in
the design aspect of his or her own work.
Piktogram, 2005 in Polen gegründet, ist ein zweisprachiges Magazin
(Polnisch/Englisch), das eine Mischung aus Künstlerbeiträgen bzw.
gefundenen und bisher unveröffentlichten Bildmaterial sowie Texte aus
den Bereichen Kunst, Architektur, Film, Design, Wissenschaft und Fiktion
zeigt. Zeitgenössische Ideen werden mit wenig bekannten, wiederentdeckten
Phänomenen aus der Zeit des Kommunismus in Osteuropa konfrontiert.
Piktogram ist eine „Ausstellung“ in der Form eines Magazines. Zusätzlich
zu der verlegerischen Tätigkeit organisiert Piktogram/Bureau of Loose
Associations auch Ausstellungen, Filmvorführungen sowie Veranstaltungen

Launched in September 2007, Samandal is a non-governmental organization

Roma Publications is an independent art publisher, founded in
1998 by graphic designer Roger Willems and artist Mark Manders.
It is used as a platform to produce autonomous publications in
close collaboration with a growing number of artists, institutions, writers, and designers. Depending on the content, every
issue has its own rules of appearance and distribution, ranging
from newsprint projects to exclusive books. So far they have
published 144 issues with editions between 2 and 150,000.
Seit ihrer Gründung im September 2007 widmet sich die unabhängige
Organisation Samandal der Verbreitung von Comic-Kunst in der Arabischen
Welt. Mit 70 beteiligten Künstlern aus 19 regionalen und internationalen
Länder, blickt Samandal stolz auf ein wachsendes Netzwerk von Künstlern,
Illustratoren, Designern und Erzählern, die in drei Sprachen daran arbeiten,
die Comic-Domäne der Arabischen Welt zum Blühen zu bringen. Samandal steht
im Kontakt mit ähnlichen unabhängigen Comic-Initiativen anderer Länder,
nimmt an Konferenzen, Festivals und virtuellen Treffen teil, und bietet
darüberhinaus zahlreiche Workshops und Veranstaltungen zum Thema Comic an.
Derzeit sind neun Vierteljahresausgaben des Samandal Comics Magazines im
Umlauf, für die Samandal zahlreiche Preise und große Aufmerksamkeit in den
Medien erhalten hat. In nur zweieinhalb Jahren ist aus einer ehrgeizigen
Idee eine ausgedehnte Comic-Bewegung entstanden.

Space Poetry veröffentlichte das erste Buch im Jahr 1980 und ein Jahr
darauf die erste Ausgabe der Kunstzeitschrift Pist Protta.
Pist Protta und Space Poetry wurde zu einem Ort unsere Arbeit einem
Publikum außerhalb des kleinen Dorfes, in dem wir damals lebten, zu
zeigen und öffnete zugleich den Raum für zahlreiche formale als auch
inhaltliche Experimente. Bis heute hat Space Poetry mehr als 250 Titel
veröffentlicht, dazu 68 Ausgaben von Pist Protta.

magazine Spector cut+paste which was founded in 2001. We have been
collaborating regularly with a number of artists and book-makers such
as Olaf Nicolai, Tobias Zielony, Lina Grumm, Till Gathmann. This fall

Space poetry published their first book in 1980, and the following
year published the first issue of the art magazine Pist Protta.
Pist Protta and Space Poetry became for us a space for showing our
work to an audience outside the small village where we were living.
It also became a space for many experiments with form and content.
Space Poetry has now published more than 250 titles and 68 issues of
Pist Protta.

Mehr noch, sie rufen solche Austauschprozesse am Schnittpunkt von
Kunst, Design und Wissenschaft mit hervor. In unserer verlegerischen

Wie bei der namengebenden boîte verte von Marcel Duchamp, in der
er seine Werke für ein größeres Publikum als Edition reproduzierte,
möchten wir mit The Green Box Kunstwerken im öffentlichen Medium Buch
eine angemessene und überzeugende Form geben, so dass sich bisweilen
auch hier die Grenzen zwischen den Werken und ihrer Dokumentation

reproduced his artworks as editions for a larger audience, The Green
Box aims at utilizing the book-format as a public medium to present
artworks appropriately and convincingly, occasionally blurring the
boundaries between the art work and its documentation.
Since its foundation five years ago, we could establish The Green Box
as a specialized publisher for contemporary art based on its quality
of content, its outstanding design, and its high-quality finish. So
far almost 40 books have been published, and we will continue to
expand our profile in the field area of the artist book.

Sternberg Press grew out of the small publishing house known as
Lukas & Sternberg, founded in 1999 by Caroline Schneider. Dedicated
to an expanded notion of writing on art, Sternberg Press has created
a platform in which practitioners from the fields of art and culture
(architecture, design, film, politics, literature and philosophy)
can engage in a critical discourse. Each book is a special object
celebrating creative publishing at its best, based on both meticulous
editorial decisions and distinctive design. Through commissioned and

This structure promotes exhibitions and the production and distribution
of artists’ multiples and books. Since 2008, (U)L.S gives artists a
carte blanche within the twelve-page black and white newspaper which
they edit. 5,000 to 10,000 copies are printed on rotary press, a
tabloid format of 430 mm by 290 mm. This medium and its appropriation
is in keeping with the lineage of “free papers”, a print medium open
for artistic ideas without the mediation of critical texts, thus
remaining closely connected to the artist book.

ZINE’S MATE wurde 2009 von UTRECHT & PAPERBACK MAGAZINE ins Leben
gerufen, um die erste große Messe für Kunstbücher in Tokio zu
organisieren. Als Organisation veranstaltet und unterstützt ZINE’S
MATE auch Kunstprojekte und -veranstaltungen. Zu ihren weiteren

Zavod P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. is an independent non-profit organization dedicated
to the research, presentation and promotion of contemporary visual art,
new media, performance and music. It was founded by artist and scholar
Tadej Pogačar. Zavod P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. currently runs two spaces: KAPSULA
bookshop & project space and P74 Center & Gallery both in Ljubljana. In
2005, an intense program focusing on artists’ books was initiated. The
program includes the production, education and international collection
of artists’ books. Recently we have published artists’ books and multiples
of local and international artists including Mladen Stilinović, Tadej
Pogačar, Vlado Martek, Balint Sombathy, Dejan Habicht, Zora Stančić and
Tanja Lažetić.
ZINE’S MATE was established in 2009 by UTRECHT & PAPERBACK MAGAZINE
for the purpose of organizing the Tokyo Art Book Fair. ZINE’S MATE
is also an organization which acts as a catalyst and facilitator
for artist projects and events. Its activities include ZINE’S MATE
SHOP, a zine and artists’ book shop, which renews its titles every
three months.
