argobooks
2nd Cannons is an artist-run small press based in Los Angeles with a focus
on artists’ books and experiments in using the book form for documentation.
An extension of Brian Kennon’s practice, 2nd Cannons also curates a closetsized storefront project space in the LA’s Chinatown arts district.
argobooks originated from more than fiftteen years of collaborative work on
catalogues and books with renowned international artists and institutions
for contemporary art. Founded in 2007, argobooks focuses on artists’ books
and books on art and theory. We are initiating and co-publishing books
with artists and curators, Institutions for Contemporary Art, Museums and
private collectors.
2nd Cannons ist ein Künstler-geführter Kleinverlag in Los Angeles mit
Schwerpunkt auf Künstlerbüchern und experimentellen Formaten, die das
Buch als Dokumentationsobjekt begreifen. Zusätzlich zur künstlerischen
Arbeit von Brian Kennon kuratiert 2nd Cannons in Chinatown, dem Künstlerviertel L.A.s, einen Kleiderschrank-großen Projektraum.

BAS
Seit 2006 leitet die Künstlerin Banu Cennetoğlu den Projektraum
BAS in Istanbul, in dem Künstlerbücher und -publikationen gesammelt, ausgestellt und verlegt werden.
BAS baut ein Archiv von Künstlerbüchern lokaler und internationaler KünstlerInnen auf. Ein wechselndes Ausstellungsprogramm
soll das Medium Künstlerbuch bekannter machen und die Aufmerksamkeit für die gedruckten Werke verstärken.
Das erste veröffentlichte Projekt von BAS ist Bent, eine Kooperation zwischen BAS und der Künstlerin Philippine Hoegen. Um
lokale Produktionen zu unterstützen und eine Diskussion über das
Medium anzuregen, konzentriert sich Bent auf die Zusammenarbeit
mit türkischen KünstlerInnen. Seit Mai 2006 publizierte Bent
zehn Bücher von fünf verschiedenen KünstlerInnen bzw. Künstlergruppen.
basso is a studio, cinema, gallery, performance stage, concert
hall, presentation frame, entertainment concept, magazine, edition, restaurant, artist collective, social project, culture club,
party venue, visual concept, installation. basso is semipublic,
private, open, ephemeral, familiar, hedonistic, artistic, radical,
queer, organic, open to interpretation, evolution, interaction.
basso is made by a changing team of contributors, helpers, friends
and of course the fabulous boys (and girls) from the basso artist
collective and the studio. basso magazin is the printed output of
the space.

Since 2006, artist Banu Cennetoğlu has been running the space BAS
in Istanbul where artists’ books and publications are collected,
displayed and produced.
BAS is building an archive of artists’ books by local and international artists. With a permanent display in the space the aim is
to create an awareness of the medium and to encourage the public
to explore printed matter.
BAS’ first production project is Bent, a partnership between BAS
and artist Philippine Hoegen. To support a local production and
generate a discussion on the medium, Bent focuses on collaborations with artists from Turkey. Since May 2006, ten Bent books by
five different artists or art collectives were launched.

by emerging artists, our projects are initiated by both invitation, open
submission, and through guest curated projects. Book Works consists of

binding, box-making and multiples. Our other activities also include a
lecture program, artists’ surgeries and workshops, held by both the publishing department and the studio.

fördert junge KünstlerInnen und initiiert Projekte sowohl durch Einladung und offene Ausschreibung als auch mit GastkuratorInnen. Book Works
verbindet den Verlag mit der Vergabe von Aufträgen an Künstler sowie
mit einer Werkstatt, die auf Buchbindungen, Schachteln und Multiples
spezialisiert ist. Außerdem veranstalten Verlag und Werkstatt gemeinsam
eine Vortragsreihe sowie verschiedene Künstler-Workshops.

Da meine künstlerische Arbeit auf fotografischen Archiven basiert,
stellt das Buch für mich den idealen Ort zur Präsentation meiner
Bildarrangements dar, die ich als eigenständige Arbeit betrachte.
Verlegerin zu werden war für mich eine Notwendigkeit, um bei formalen Entscheidungen gänzlich frei zu sein und nichtkommerzielle Ideen
verfolgen und durchsetzen zu können.
Trotz der ökonomischen Realität von hohen Druckkosten suche ich Wege,
unabhängig zu bleiben - auch dann, wenn ich Koproduktionen eingehe.
Es findet eine regelmäßige Zusammenarbeit zwischen éditions doc-cd
und anderen KünstlerInnen statt.

Dexter Sinister, kürzlich noch als „Flugblattschreiber“ bezeichnet,
steht für die zusammengesetzten Namen von David Reinfurt und Stuart
Bailey. David gründete 1999 in New York das Designstudio O-R-G. Stuart war 2000 Mitbegründer des Kunstmagazins Dot Dot Dot. 2006 eröffneten Dexter Sinister in New York eine Kellerwerkstatt in der Lower
East Side. Die Idee hinter dieser Werkstatt bestand darin, der zeitgenössischen Fließbandproduktion eine „Just-In-Time“-Ökonomie entgegenzusetzen. Im Sommer 2006 stieg Sarah Crowner bei Dexter Sinister
mit ein. Die New Yorker Künstlerin hat selbst zahlreiche Künstlerbücher und Bücher über Kunst geschaffen und verlegt.
As my artistic work is based on photographic archives, I favor­the book
as the best space to present my picture arrangements, considering it as
a work in itself. Becoming a publisher was a necessity to me in order
to keep a total freedom in the formal choices and to be able to take on
and stand up for noncommercial ideas.
Dealing with the economic reality of the high printing costs, I like
to find solutions to remain independent, even when it comes to co-publishing. Collaborations with other artists are frequent at éditions
doc-cd.

Various publications
Recently described as pamphleteers, Dexter Sinister is the compound
name of David Reinfurt and Stuart Bailey. David formed O-R-G, a design
studio in New York City in 1999. Stuart co-founded the arts journal
Dot Dot Dot in 2000. In 2006, Dexter Sinister established a workshop
in a basement on the Lower East Side in New York City. The workshop was
intended to model a "Just-In-Time" economy of print production, running counter to the contemporary assembly-line realities of large-scale
publishing. The New York-based artist Sarah Crowner who has made and
distributed numerous artists’ books and books about art became involved
with Dexter Sinister in summer 2006.

Bis heute sind 86 Bücher erschienen, und eigentlich könnte man sie
alle als «rare books», seltene Bücher, bezeichnen, nicht nur weil es
meistens kleine Auflagen sind, sondern auch weil es schon immer darum
ging, seltene Bücher zu verlegen, die es so noch nicht gab und die
auch niemand sonst publizieren würde. Von Anfang an arbeitete die
Edition Patrick Frey vor allem mit Schweizer aber auch mit internationalen Autoren. Das Wirkungsfeld der Bücher war immer grenzüberschreitend ausgerichtet. Besonders jungen KünstlerInnen wollte die Edition
Patrick Frey mit einer ersten Publikation eine Chance und Plattform
bieten. Zurzeit werden sechs bis acht Bücher pro Jahr produziert,
fokussiert auf Fotografie, Kunst und Projekte aus dem Bereich der Alltagskultur und des Populären.
GAGARIN, The Artists in their Own Words is published twice a year and is
entirely dedicated to the publication of especially written and unpublished texts by artists who are now working anywhere in the world. The
texts are published in their original language and alphabetical writing
with the addition of an unabridged English translation. Advertisements
and visual material are deliberately kept out. GAGARIN is aimed at those who do not tend to wait until everything is accepted and synthesized
and those who are prepared to leave the road to search for stimulating
art and ideas while they are still fresh.

Up until today 86 books have been published, which could be described as
rare books, not only because they're printed in a small number of copies,
but also because it was always intended to publish unique books, which
haven't been published before and would never be published by anyone
else. Edition Patrick Frey worked in close collaboration with mainly
Swiss but also international authors. The area of impact of the books was
always meant to be transboundary. It was the purpose of Edition Patrick
Frey to provide particularly young artists an opportunity and a platform
with a first publication. Currently six to eight books are being produced, focussing on photography, art, and projects dealing with everyday
and popular culture.

information as material was founded in 2002 by the English conceptual
writer Simon Morris to publish work by artists who use extant material – selecting and reframing it to generate new meanings – and who, in
doing so, disrupt the existing order of things. iam is an independent
imprint based in York, England, and works to support experimental reading performances through publishing and curating books, prints, audio
works, web works and documentary films. All publications are distributed
internationally by Cornerhouse (Manchester) and/or via our website.

Temporary Services handelt es sich um eine Gruppe von drei Personen

– durch Auswahl und Rekontextualisierung neue Bedeutungen schaffen
und so mit der bestehenden Ordnung der Dinge brechen. iam ist ein
unabhängiges Kunstdruck-Label mit Sitz in York (England), das sich
durch das Verlegen und Kuratieren von Büchern, Drucken, Sound-Arbeiten, Netzkunst und Dokumentarfilmen der Förderung von experimentellen

Half Letter Press is a publishing imprint and an experimental online
store initiated by Temporary Services. Temporary Services is a group of
three people (Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer). We have
published booklets as an element of our collaborative work since 1998.
We created Half Letter Press to publish and distribute works by ourselves and others. We are interested in using this endeavor to build longterm support and expanded audiences for people that work creatively in
experimental ways. We are particularly interested in supporting people
and projects that have had difficulty finding financial and promotional
assistance through mainstream commercial channels.

Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard (SCULPTURE) is an appropriation of the 1914 edition of Stéphane Mallarmé's poem of the same name, but
with all the words cut out by laser. A preface features the entire poem
written as a block of text. This transcription was carried out in 1969 by
Broodthaers. 12 double spreads follow, with immaculately cut out windows
standing in for the text. When turning the pages, numerous shadows are
being generated by the cutouts. The work is soft bound and feels quite
insubstantial. The cover is a facsimile of the 1914 edition by Librairie
Gallimard, with the word “SCULPTURE” replacing “POEME” (or “IMAGE”).

alle Worte mit Laser ausgeschnitten. Ein Vorwort beinhaltet den gesamten
Text als Blocktext – diese Transkription hatte 1969 Broodthaers durchgeführt. 12 Doppelseiten folgen, mit Schnittfenstern anstelle der Textzeilen. Beim Umblättern erzeugen die Fenster eine Vielzahl von Schatten.
Das Buch ist broschiert und fühlt sich wenig monolithisch an. Auf dem
Cover steht anstelle der Kategorisierung „POEME“ (1914) oder „IMAGE“
(1969) das Wort „SCULPTURE“.

MER. wurde mit dem Anliegen gegründet, das Medium Buch hinsichtlich
seiner Position und Möglichkeiten als Ausstellungsort für Kunst zu untersuchen. Traditionell wurde das Kunstbuch als Katalog oder aide-mémoire entwickelt, jedoch nur selten als ein Ort betrachtet, an dem auch
„lebendige“ Kunst ausgestellt werden kann. MER. möchte dieser künstle­
rischen Praxis eine institutionelle Basis bieten. MER. bezeichnet sich
selbst als eine Paper Kunsthalle und plant, koordiniert und unterstützt
Kunstausstellungen innerhalb des Mediums Buch. MER. Paper Kunsthalle
setzt also Buchprojekte in Gang, die nicht für sich beanspruchen, gänzlich Künstlerbücher zu sein, sondern die immer noch, als Kunstausstellungen, auch Träger von Kunst sein wollen – mit allen Konsequenzen.

MER. was founded to examine the possibilities and position of the book
medium as a place to exhibit art. The art book, since its beginnings, has
traditionally been developed as a catalogue or an aide-mémoire, and seldom
has been considered as a space to exhibit living art. MER. will be involved
with providing this kind of activity through an institutional platform.
MER. calls itself a Paper Kunsthalle, and plans to initiate, develop and
support art exhibiting within the book medium.
MER. Paper Kunsthalle now operates as a catalyst for book projects that do
not claim to be artists’ books to the full extent, but still are, as art
exhibitions, carriers of art, with all that entails.

Die Non-Profit-Organisation P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute befasst sich mit

Theoretiker Tadej Pogac̆ar. P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute bespielt zwei

Passenger Books came into being on a ship on the Bosporus on New
Year’s Eve 2004/05. Since then, eleven books and two sets of artists’ buttons have been published between Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Montreal, and Zurich.

Passenger Books wurde am Neujahrsabend 2004/05 auf einem Schiff

Roma Publications
Roma Publications is an independent art publisher, founded in 1998
by graphic designer Roger Willems and artist Mark Manders. It is
used as a platform to produce autonomous publications in close collaboration with a growing number of artists, institutions, writers
and designers. Related to the content, every issue has its own rule
of appearance and distribution, varying from house to house papers
to exclusive books. Until now they published 130 issues with editions between 2 and 150,000.
Printed Matter began as a publisher in 1976, but has focused primarily
on distribution since the late 1970s. Beginning in 2002, we revived our
publishing mandate, producing some 40 publications by artists from Lisa
Anne Auerbach to Lawrence Weiner, and by groups as diverse as Temporary
Services and LTTR. With an interest in democratic dissemination, Printed
Matter specializes in larger, inexpensive editions: recently we have paid
special attention to the phenomenon of zine culture, with exhibitions and
catalogues of both skateboarder zines and queer zines. And we have a new
zine series of our own: "Artists & Activists" challenges artists to produce new works for activist pamphleteering.

cut+paste" which we launched in 2001. With this magazine we hovered between artistic and journalistic practices – by inventing own formats for
the editions and exploring design as content. In 2007 we started to publish books as well. When we decide whether to do a book project or not we
ask ourselves whether its content is important to us: the books we bring
forth should both be beautiful and relevant. Ever since the internet has
become the book's counterpart its distinguishing features have clearly

Der Ausgangspunkt unseres Verlags ist die Zeitschrift „spector
cut+paste“, die wir 2001 gegründet haben. Mit ihr bewegten wir uns zwischen künstlerischen und journalistischen Praktiken – wir haben in den
Heften eigene Formate erfunden und die inhaltlichen Aspekte des Designs
untersucht. Seit 2007 verlegen wir auch Bücher. Bei der Entscheidung für
ein Buchprojekt achten wir darauf, ob es uns selbst inhaltlich wichtig
erscheint. Denn die Bücher, die wir herausgeben, sollen nicht nur schön,
sondern auch relevant sein. Seitdem das Internet dem Buch als Medium
gegenübersteht, wird deutlicher, worin sich das Buch von anderen Medien
unterscheidet: durch seine materielle Beschaffenheit, sein spezifisches
Format und seine grafische Ausgestaltung. Das ist genau das Potenzial,
mit dem wir arbeiten.

Torpedo is a non-profit (project-based) organization devoted to the promotion and production of artists’ books, art theory and critical readers
in contemporary art. Situated in Hausmannsgate, Oslo, Torpedo is both a
publisher and a bookstore, and occasionally a venue for exhibitions and
concerts related to book launches and the process of publishing, or discursive activities like panel discussions and debates. As a publisher,
Torpedo Press’ program range from fanzine productions to essay series and
artists’ books. Additional activities include research and curatorial
practice aiming to investigate historical and contemporary production of
printed matter, and different strategies in publishing.

gegründet, seit 1981 Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln. Bisher
sind ca. 2.500 Titel, hauptsächlich zur modernen und zeitgenössischen
Kunst, zu Fotografie, Architektur und ästhetischen Theorie erschienen.
Seit ca. 10 Jahren meist zweisprachig (dt/eng.) bzw. vorwiegend in englischer Sprache. Unser besonderes verlegerisches Interesse gilt den artists’ books – der Zusammenarbeit mit den KünstlerInnen.

Torpedo ist eine (projektbezogene) Non-Profit Organisation, die sich der
Förderung und Produktion von Künstlerbüchern, Kunsttheorie und -kritik
der Gegenwartskunst widmet. Torpedo ist eine Kombination aus Verlag und
Buchhandlung und hat seinen Sitz in Hausmannsgate, Oslo. Anlässlich von
Buchpräsentationen verwandelt sich Torpedo gelegentlich auch in einen
Veranstaltungsort für Ausstellungen, Konzerte oder Diskussionsrunden.
Das Verlagsprogramm von Torpedo Press reicht von Fanzine Produktionen
bis zu Essaybänden und Künstlerbüchern. Darüber hinaus widmet sich
Torpedo der Forschung und kuratorischen Praxis, um die historische und
zeitgenössische Herstellung von Druckerzeugnissen sowie unterschiedliche Strategien des Publizierens zu untersuchen.

est. 2,500 titles, mainly on modern and contemporary art, photography,
