In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in eastern Turkey, Berfé, an old woman, and Jiyan, her young
granddaughter, are troubled when the only man of the household, Temo, the son of one and father
of the other, is arrested and taken into custody by the local gendarmerie. The commanding officer
has received word that the villagers are hiding guns. It is announced that all the men of the village
will be kept in custody until their families submit and hand over the guns they are hiding. But the
problem is there are no guns, at least to the knowledge of these two blameless women. Despairing
and on their own, Berfé and Jiyan are faced with a long journey in search of a gun that they can
exchange for their beloved Temo. But how can their innocence and naivety find a way out in a
system that threatens, eventually, to drag them into the sullied world of an interminable conflict?
Hüseyin Karabey (1970) has been making films since 1996. He graduated from the
Film and Television Department of Marmara University in 2001. His involvement in
the democracy movement in the 90s and his background as a documentarian have
determined the style and the content of his subsequent film work. His first feature
film My Marlon and Brando was selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival and had its
North American premiere at Tribeca, where it won Hüseyin Karabey the Best Director
award. To date, the film has been screened in 36 international film festivals and won
numerous awards. Come to My Voice will be his second feature film.

In Antioch, courtyards are separated from the streets by high walls and their doors are always
closed. In Antioch, every courtyard is a world in and of its own. Among its inhabitants are Turks,
Arabs, Christians, Jews, Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Alawites, Sunni Muslims... And a different
language is spoken in every courtyard.
Eleni is a beautiful yet rather unkempt 27 year-old woman of Greek origin. She has three daughters
aged nine, seven and five. Since her husband’s death she has been alienated by her neighbours.
Men have stopped speaking to her to avoid gossip, while women do the same to keep her away
from their husbands. Imprisoned in her courtyard with her daughters, Eleni contrives excuses to go
to her neighbours every evening for some conversation…
Semir Aslanyürek (Antakya, 1956) studied medicine at Damascus University until
1978. He then transferred to the Moscow State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK)
Faculty of Film Directing, where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees
from the department of acting, cinema and TV film between 1980-1986. In 1990,
he started his academic career as a lecturer at the Marmara University Faculty of
Fine Arts at the Department of Cinema & TV. He began shooting his debut feature
Wagon in 1993, but the film’s post-production remained incomplete. He has written
ten feature film screenplays, two of which are literary adaptations.

A Brechtian look at an Ottoman Burlesque with songs and music, 7 Husbands for Hurmuz tells
the story of an alluring woman, Hurmuz who lives in Taşkasap, Istanbul in 1900. She is unofficially
married to six guys of different occupations, each of whom she hosts on different days of the week.
While refusing them nuptial bliss in her bed, she lures them into giving her expensive presents in
order to live on easy terms. One day, Hurmuz happens to see the local doctor Hüsrev while at the
barbershop of one of her husbands. She then feigns illness and asks for the doctor. When the doctor
falls in love with her too, he requisitions her best friend and matchmaker Safinaz to ask for Hurmuz’s
hand. On a night when all the husbands will get together by chance, Hurmuz and her confidante
Safinaz find themselves in trouble.
Ezel Akay (1961) studied engineering at Boğaziçi University and theatre arts at
Villanova University, Philadelphia. He was part of many theatre productions as an
actor and director before entering the film production business. As a founding
partner of IFR-Istisnai Films (1990), he directed more than 500 commercials. With
IFR, he produced Derviş Zaim’s feature film debut Somersault in a Coffin and Yeşim
Ustaoğlu’s Journey to the Sun, both of which won many awards at international
festivals. He is currently preparing for his next feature as director / producer.

A bag full of money lands in front of you. Is it luck? The answer to your prayers? Part of a
predetermined plan? Or all of the above? Set in the chaotic streets of Istanbul, 40 is the story of
three strangers making their way in a city of 12 million, all searching…for one bag. Shot entirely on
location, 40 combines intense storytelling with documentary-style cinematography, embarking on a
synchronistic journey that deals with faith, love, luck, destiny, human trafficking…and a bag of cash
that falls from the sky.
Emre Şahin (Istanbul) moved to the United States to study film at Boston’s Emerson
College. His student film Fetish was awarded two acclaimed Evvy Awards (Best Film,
Best Editing). Upon moving to Los Angeles after graduation, Şahin won the coveted
Panavision scholarship and trained with some of the world’s leading directors of
photography. Şahin has since directed and edited documentary and television shows
for networks such as ABC, MTV, VH1, History Channel, TLC, and Discovery Channel.

A love affair threatened by a barrier as great as itself…
Can differences of faith stand in the way of an innocent love affair?
Two young people, Esma and Mustafa, fall in love. For them, the future only has meaning if they are
together. Failing this, life is meaningless. However, overhanging their love is a barrier unique to the
period and location: Mustafa is a clandestine Christian, when everyone including Esma thinks he is
Muslim. In the meantime, the Ottoman Empire introduces a series of reforms giving Christians the
same rights as Muslims. From this point on, the Church urges secret Christians to reveal their faith.
This poses a dilemma for Mustafa: he is caught between his love and the Church.
Yusuf Kurçenli (Rize, 1947) studied journalism. He worked as both a producer and
a director for state broadcaster TRT from 1973 to 1980. Kurçenli, who has also
directed numerous television series, is a director who stands out in Turkish cinema
for his own distinctive narrative style.

A painter with a turbulent history, fiercely committed to his ideals and still averse to settling down
despite his 70 years; a lawyer who packed in his job after suffering a heart attack and now pursues
a quiet life looking after his pet snail; a doctor already disenchanted with his profession and now
discarded by his wife; a career woman braving life on her own, who has made loneliness a lifestyle.
These characters are all patrons of Black & White, an Ankara bar that has been around for 25 years,
and in a sense the bar is their last haven. The owner, meanwhile, is the irritable, easily offended but
utterly lovable Faruk...
Black & White is a film about the awareness of growing old, friendship, sensitivity and the finer
details of life.
Ahmet Boyacıoğlu (Zonguldak, 1953) graduated from Ankara University with a
degree in medicine and spent 20 years working as a general surgeon. From 19881995 he served on the executive committee of the Ankara International Film Festival.
Since 1995 he has been general secretary of the Festival on Wheels, as well as
chairing the Ankara Cinema Association. Between 2005 and 2007, he took on the
role of Turkey’s national representative for Eurimages. He writes on film for an
assortment of newspapers and magazines.

Bornova Bornova is set at a time when dreams have dwindled and sanity is hard to hold on to. Even
the prospect of a regular, routine life now holds great promise.
Salih and Hakan, who spend their entire time outside the local grocery store hoping to get lucky one
day, are like brothers. Hakan, the younger of the two, is just back from national service. The football
career he longed for was over before it even began because of injury, leaving him with neither skills
nor a job. His hope is to become a taxi driver. Salih, the local psychopath, is the only person who
listens to Hakan, the only person to give him advice. Although he comes from a good family, and a
well-educated one at that, Salih is mixed up in all manner of unlawful activity in the neighbourhood.
Everyone is scared of him. Even the high-school girl Özlem. That’s the girl Hakan is crazy about,
except he has never dared speak to her.
İnan Temelkuran (Izmir, 1976) earned a law degree from Ankara University in 1998.
He went to Spain to research the Franco era through the film industry. He earned
a degree in film direction from the TAI Superior School of Visual Arts in 2003 and
a master of arts degree in film and TV from the Marmara University School of Fine
Arts in 2008. In 2007, he directed his first feature, Made in Europe, which received
several awards.

Breath is the story of 40 soldiers and their commanding officer, who are charged with guarding a
military post on Karabal Hill, very close to the Iraqi border in south-east Turkey.
These young people have to perform the formidable task of protecting their homeland, which means
being permanently ready, awake and alert for mortal combat which might take place any second.
They must also survive the very tough physical conditions of a desolate corner of the country. But
at the same time they experience and have to deal with challenges from their own life away from
home; all the grief, joy, sorrow and quandaries…
Levent Semerci started to work as a director mostly in Europe and in other countries
after graduating from Anadolu University in Film and TV studies. He also made TV
commercials for companies such as Ford, Garanti Bank, Zorlu, Akbank and Işbank,
among others... Breath is his debut feature.

Halil, who joins the police force under pressure from his father, has caused the death of a suspicious
looking African immigrant in the course of duty. Conscience drives him to attempt suicide. He
imprisons himself in a closed world. Meanwhile, the journey Jordan embarks on with his mother is
to end in Britain with his father, who he will meet up with in Greece. The last stop before Greece is
Dalyan, on the southwest coast of Turkey. But the tough journey ends in an accident at sea. Jordan
survives, but his mother dies.
When Halil finds Jordan, the child’s fate is left in his hands. But as Halil walks away from the
responsibility, he surrenders his own fate to the young Jordan. The little boy, his veiled past and a
sense of guilt gradually give way to love and sacrifice.
Nesli Çölgeçen (1955) graduated from Ankara University in 1976. He has been
directing movies since 1980. He has taught cinematography at top universities in
Turkey and still lectures to master’s programme students at Bilgi University, Istanbul.
He has won awards both nationally and internationally.

This is the story of Ömer, whose father is a second-rate actor for B movies like ‘Captain Space’, a
tacky sci-fi title from the 1970’s... A spitting image of his father, Ömer is a con-man for a mafia
organisation. After some serious trouble with his boss, he escapes his killers and finds refuge in
an impoverished household. There he meets Asu, a six-year-old girl who takes Ömer for the real
‘Captain Space’. Ömer doesn’t want to disappoint her and acts like the ‘hero’ from outer space. The
day he spends in the little girl’s house changes everything in the lives of everyone involved in the
story.
Ümit Ünal (1965) studied film and began working as a scriptwriter and assistant
director. He has written the screenplays for eight Turkish feature films. He began
shooting commercials in 1996 and made his feature debut as a director with 9. 9
won a string of awards at various film festivals on the international circuit and was
Turkey’s official foreign language film selection for the Academy Awards in 2003.
He wrote and co-directed his second feature film Istanbul Tales in 2004. He has also
published two novels and a book of short stories.

Ten-year-old Gulistan and her younger brother Fırat live happily with their parents in Diyarbakır.
Tragedy strikes when their mother and father are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their
eyes. Traumatised and orphaned, Gulistan, Fırat and their infant sister are placed in the care of their
young, politically-active aunt Yekbun, who soon disappears without a trace. As days turn into weeks,
the money that their aunt left them runs out. Eventually, the children have to fend for themselves
on the streets, where one day, Gulistan is shocked to come across the murderer of her parents.
Miraz Bezar (Ankara, 1971) immigrated to Germany with his family in 1980. He quit
studying economics and started working as a cameraman and acting in Off Theatre
groups. With the success of his first short film, he began studying at the German
Film Academy in Berlin (DFFB). His short films Berivan, Duri and Freiwild have been
screened at festivals worldwide and won awards. He currently lives in Berlin and
Istanbul.

Ozan Açıktan (Eskisehir, 1978) earned an undergraduate degree in Radio, Television
and Film from Ankara University in 2000. While still a student, he directed short films
and worked as an assistant director. After graduating, he continued his studies in the
cinematography department at the Polish National Film School in Lodz. On return
to Istanbul, he was awarded a place at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in
Ludwigsburg, Germany, to study scriptwriting and dramaturgy.

Salim is a caretaker in an apartment block. One of the residents in the building, Korcan, works as
a news cameraman for a TV channel. One day Korcan tells Salim about an idea that will generate
extra income for them: they will fabricate fake news footage. Salim will perform and Korcan film
him as if an amateur has coincidentally captured the event on camera. Then they’ll sell it to a TV
channel as authentic footage.
In this way, a new world of opportunities opens up for the pair.
Meriç Demiray (Aydın, 1975) holds a BA in film and television studies from
Anadolu University. He worked in various jobs in the film industry before becoming
a professional screenwriter in 2002. He has also written several drama series for
television. Daddy’s is his debut feature.

Adnan lives alone with his son, Burak, in Istanbul, doing his best to find family warmth with his

Theron Patterson earned his bachelor and graduate degrees in filmmaking from
Arizona University and CalArts Institute respectively. Since 2001 he has been a
faculty member at Bahçeşehir University’s Film & TV Department. Experienced in all
departments of filmmaking, he has worked on many short film and video projects.
Patterson’s latest short film Şahin’s Pride was screened at many festivals in Turkey.

a general amnesty, the 12-year-old sister of Ensar, a soldier in southeast Turkey, is raped. When
Ensar vanishes in the meantime, he becomes the lead suspect in the serial murder case. The deputy
director and chief inspector of the Istanbul Crimes & Murder Department take over the case. The
murderer is highly intelligent and acts fast. He also has the support of the public for giving the guilty
their comeuppance.
Uğur Yücel studied acting at the Istanbul Conservatoire and launched a career of
one-man shows in 1977. Six years later, he began acting in feature films and made
his directorial debut with a short film in 1987. He projected the silent film on a big
screen and accompanied it himself on stage with percussion instruments. He is an
active actor, writer, director and composer for feature films and television series. As
one of the most acclaimed actors of his time, Uğur Yücel is highly respected for his
ability to ‘migrate’ into the souls of the characters he plays.

Zeki Demirkubuz (Isparta, 1964) graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of

In Five Cities, the lives of the five characters are closely bound up with death. A policeman who
is painfully in love; a young university student who works as a part-time shop assistant to pay her
way; a teacher tormented by guilt because of the crime he committed; a man treated badly by life
who sells toy trains and has a thing for poetry; and an 11-year-old boy desperate to be in the school
dance team so he can hold the hand of the girl he loves...
Throughout the film, the lives of these characters change constantly with the irony of fate. Three
of them have cancer and know that they are going to die; the other two are murderers and know

Onur Ünlü (Izmit, 1973) graduated from the Communications Department of
Anadolu University. He earned a master’s degree at Marmara University, majoring
in communication sciences. Since 1997 he has been working as a screenwriter,
copywriter, producer and director in the film production business. In 2007 he wrote,
produced and directed his first feature film Police. He has also made a sci-fi children’s
film called The Kid.

Ali, a young good-looking guy and something of a womanizer, is the son of a tradesman in the
bustling Mahmutpaşa bazaar district of Istanbul. And Gözde is the philanthropic, nature-loving
daughter of a wealthy contractor, who buys up the commercial building where Ali’s father works.
The contractor decides to raze the building and put up a shopping mall instead. When he asks the
tradesmen to vacate the building right away, the tradesmen join forces, hatch a plan and persuade
Ali to work his charms on Gözde. Ali and Gözde, who meet at a charity night, are quite taken by one
another. A series of plans are contrived with the help of the tradesmen, and a comic and romantic
story unfolds.
Murat Şeker (1973) studied film and television at Mimar Sinan University. He began
working in the production of documentary films and television series in 1992. He
continued his career directing music videos and writing on music for newspapers
and magazines. After working at the music channel Number One TV as a creative
director, he began working with Sinan Çetin as an assistant director. He is currently
working on his new project.

Reşat a young man working in illegal dvd business has an antisocial personality causing problems
in his relations. He lives in a miserable apartment with his mother at the outskirts of the town and
has an obsessive interest for a young girl living at the same building he encounters at the stairs
occasionally. One of his hidden obsessions is to have a motorbike. He also steals some small objects
as an habit in his dull life. One day he steals a package left by Celal, a friend of his boss. At the same
day Celal, an outlaw, is killed by his enemies. Reşat is totally amazed when he opens the package
and finds a photo of a woman with an address and a pistol.
Tayfun Pirselimoğlu (Trabzon, 1959) studied painting and engraving at the
Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna after graduating from Middle East
Technical University. He has held exhibitions in various cities around the world. He
taught painting, scriptwriting and directing at Akademie Genius, an independent
art initiative. As a writer, he has written for numerous art magazines and published
four novels and a book of short stories. He has written short and long feature film
scripts and shot his first short film My Uncle in 1999. He won several national and

Yusuf has started primary school and is learning how to read and write. His father, Yakup, works far
in the depths of a frightening forest. He is a honey-gatherer who hangs his hand-made beehives in the
upper branches of tall trees. The forest is a place of mystery for Yusuf. One morning Yusuf describes
the dream he had that night to his father. This dream is to be an ever-lasting secret between the father
and the son. On that same day, as Yusuf struggles to read before his entire classmates the text the
teacher has given him, he begins suddenly to stutter and is ridiculed by his classmates.
Yakup goes to a distant forest, looking for the Caucasian bees which seem to be mysteriously
disappearing. His father gone, Yusuf slips into silence. Yusuf’s mother Zehra, who works in the tea
fields, is saddened to see her son in this state. No matter how hard she tries, she cannot get her
son to speak.
Semih Kaplanoğlu (1963) graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir, with a
degree in film and television in 1984. After his graduation he worked as an assistant
cameraman for several award-winning films. He wrote and directed the TV series
Şehnaz Tango, which ran for 52 episodes on two national channels. As well as
directing, Kaplanoğlu has published numerous articles on contemporary art and
cinema. Between 1996-2000 he wrote a column entitled ‘Encounters’ for the

Thirty-something Egemen works as an office boy for an advertising agency and, despite his age, still

Ibrahim Yılmaz, who has earned a living as a gunman, kills his wife before the very eyes of their two

A group of five friends, who have known each other for a long time, go off to Büyükada, the
largest of Istanbul’s islands, for a friend’s wedding. Erhan takes a video camera with him to capture
the wedding itself and the group’s long awaited reunion. He spends his whole time filming, and
everything we see on screen is his impressions behind the camera. But as the wedding wears on, a
group of zombies arrives, attacks the guests and turns the place into a bloodbath.
Murat Emir Eren (1982) is a communications student at Istanbul Bilgi University.
Between 2002-2006, he wrote on film for the national daily Vatan and weekly
magazine Haftalık. Since September 2006, he has been working as editor and writer
for the magazine Sinema. He directed a short movie called MacGuffin in 2008. The

Talip Ertürk (Istanbul, 1983) is a student at Istanbul University. Ertürk began working
as an editor for the national television channel Cine5 in 2000. He has also written
articles for Cine5 Magazine and texts for the TV show CineSinema. He spent some
time as a freelance film critic for the daily Vatan and served as an assistant editor
for the magazine Total Film from 2006 to 2007. He is currently working at the daily

Actually she was already dead when she was alive and we just had to lower her into the ground.
Now it seems that my last connection with life has gone forever. But who cares? I have nothing to
lose. I feel crushed between these walls. That’s why I like aquariums. Actually aquariums have glass
walls, too. But if it were a very large aquarium full of beautiful accessories like sunken galleys, rocks
with holes resembling small caves, shady weed, it would epitomize a small but very beautiful world.
You would know that it was fake, but you would accept that. But this world is totally different, the
walls here are real.

A space story from Erzincan...
1957... A remote village in the Erzincan area of eastern Turkey… Four impassioned villagers make
plans to travel to the moon, convinced that their mission will succeed. Their adventure is told in the
picture-book style of the period through black & white photographs. And the clipped tones of the
local narrator leave all emotion to the audience.
As events unfold, they are given explanation by prominent Turkish intellectuals with scientific
experience in different fields. And as the various aspects of these events are examined, the audience
is drawn into ‘outlandish’ territory. Watching the film gives the sense less of a historical documentary
than of an in-depth study of contemporary Turkish culture.
Kutluğ Ataman (Istanbul, 1961) studied film at the University of California, Los
Angeles. In 1994, he directed his first feature film, Serpent’s Tale, which brought
him international recognition as well as a number of awards. He won the Carnegie
Prize in Pittsburgh in 2004. In 2003 the UK’s The Observer newspaper selected him
artist of the year. His works are held in public and private collections worldwide,
including MoMA, New York.

Kosmos is a thief who works miracles. He arrives from the wilds in a timeless border town as though
a fugitive, weeping. No sooner is he there, he rescues a small boy from drowning in the river, and

Kosmos proves to be a rather extraordinary person. He never seems to eat or sleep. His single form
of nourishment is sugar, which he consumes by the fistful. One of his more striking skills is the ability
to scale the tallest trees with uncommon agility. He also declares his wish in life with disarming
honesty, which startles the townspeople: he is looking for love. Soon Kosmos and Neptün, the
teenaged sister of the rescued boy, grow closer in the weirdest of ways: by imitating the screech of

Reha Erdem (Istanbul, 1960) graduated in film studies from Paris 8 University. He
earned an MA in plastic arts at the same university. He shot his first feature-length
film Oh Moon in 1989 as a French-Turkish co-production. To date, he has written all
of his films except for Mommy I’m Scared, where he was one of the co-writers. He
also has directed short films and the stage play, Maids (Les Bonnes) by Jean Genet.

Onur is a hearing-impaired young man, brought up by his mother after his father left when he was
seven years old. Although he studied web design at university, Onur works in a library, where he
doesn’t have to communicate with people. He meets Zeynep at an engagement party for one of his
friends. Zeynep, who left home after finding out that her father has cheated on her mother, goes
through a string of jobs, finally ending up at a call centre. She spends her whole day talking with
people she doesn’t know. Tough job conditions and the little money she earns for the tedious work
make her unhappy. After meeting Onur and discovering that he is hearing-impaired, Zeynep thinks
that she can find peace at last with this man who never speaks. And a relationship begins which
urges us to question life in an altogether different way.
İlksen Başarır (Istanbul, 1978) studied communications at Marmara University. She
began working as an assistant director at the production company, IFR in 2000.
She was asisstant director to Semir Aslanyürek on his feature The Waterfall. Since
then she has worked in the production of TV commercials and feature films. Love in
Another Language is her directorial debut.

Bahadır Karataş (1965) graduated from the Film and Television Department of
Anadolu University in 1991. After a year’s experience in the film industry as an
assistant director, he went to Los Angeles on a special scholarship. He was accepted
on a three-year master’s program at the School of Cinematic Arts within the
University of Southern California (USC) and earned a master’s degree in fine arts
in 1996. His short films and documentaries have been screened in Turkey and at
international festivals.

Hüseyin is a young man who lives with his grandparents in a village in Thracian Turkey. The two
great loves of his life are his clarinet and Müjgan, a nurse. Hüseyin is perfectly content with his
music and his fantasies of Müjgan when an unexpected event causes him to leave the village. He
ends up in Istanbul, where he is supported first by his clarinet and then by the singer Firuzan. A
wildly popular nightclub performer who is eagerly working on an album, Firuzan leads a life that
is as colourful as it is complicated. When Firuzan meets Hüseyin, the adventures and laughs begin.
Hakan Algül (Çanakkale, 1966) graduated from the Istanbul University, Faculty of
Arts in 1986. He began working as an assistant director in 1986 and directing TV
commercials in 1996. Algül has also directed many television series. He made his first
feature, Döngel Karhanesi, in 2005. Oh Dear! Oh Dear! is his second feature film.

Sanem shares a house with three other transvestites in the backstreets of Istanbul and earns a living
as a prostitute. As she dreams of a hero who can rescue her from this life, she notices Gökhan,
who has recently moved to the same neighbourhood. She manages to draw Gökhan’s attention by
playing childish games with him, and an unspoken relationship soon strikes up between them. The
lives of Sanem and her three housemates are turned upside down after an unexpected event that
leads Sanem to take shelter with Gökhan. And they embark on a journey in which Gökhan questions
Sanem’s identity and Sanem questions his trust.
Emre Yalgın (Bursa, 1978) graduated from METU with a degree in philosophy and
earned an MA at the Bilkent University Department of Graphic Design. He has
worked on the production of several feature films, TV series and documentaries.
His short documentary Pink Grey won an award at the Ankara Film Festival. Other
Angels, his first feature film, was inspired by the stories told in this documentary. The
script of Other Angels was awarded development funding by the Balkan Fund at the
49th Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Ömer Faruk Sorak graduated from the Ankara University College of Media. He

DoP and director. He established Böcek Productions in 1998 and has since produced
a good number of TV commercials, music videos, TV shows, documentaries and

Esra works for a logistics firm and shares a house with her best friend Didem. She realizes at the

A young woman from the very liberal Aegean city of Smyrna is posted to a cold and religious
northern town, Of, for her first job as a judge. She goes with her mother, both full of preconceptions
about the ill-famed town, which is supposedly home to terrifying mafias and Islamists. However,
what they find are warm and joyous people dancing with the merest sound of music on their
beautiful mountains. The only difficulty is the odd mentality of the Black Sea people. A social satire
on regional contradictions, cultural prejudices, Islam and modernity, and the place of women in a
land which gave birth to the Amazons.
Nur Dolay studied sociology and political sciences in the USA and at Sorbonne
University, Paris. She worked as a journalist for the French media (Le Monde
Diplomatique, Courrier International, Thalassa on France 3 TV, Radio France
International) and Turkish press for 28 years. She has travelled all over the world
and written books on Latin America and the Caucasus, as well as making a dozen
documentary films on geopolitical issues and marine subjects. Smyrn-Of is her

A film director from the generation of ’68 decides to intervene in life through his own field. His
real concern is to create a whole new production model, a new language, a new understanding of
aesthetics, and most important, a new production ethic. So he mortgages his country house. When
the director publishes a rapturous manifesto, the house starts to fill up. He tells chosen candidates:
“During the selection process, we have looked to see if you have the courage to go after your heart.
We are here to enrich life with stories worth telling. You should have a story of your own. If you
don’t, then you’ll become the subject of other people’s stories.”
Throughout the film, this location will be used as a show arena, a giant stage. Everything that
happens on this stage will be shot in a musical harmony and with a documentary flavour.
Yavuz Özkan made several short films and wrote screenplays during the 1970s. In
1978, he directed his first feature, The Mine. In the 1980s and 1990s, he directed
several films which won multiple awards both locally and internationally. In 1995,
he founded Z-1 Film Atölyesi (Z-1 Film Studio), opening a film training centre with
33 prominent faculty members as instructors. He served as chairman of the Turkish
Directors Association from 1999-2002.

An entire village in northern Iraq is wiped out when misinformed and panicked American soldiers
stage a night-time raid. Cennet, a young Turkmen girl who has never before left home and is the
only survivor of the raid, has no choice but to set out for Kirkuk in search of her older brother, a
barber named Azim. When she reaches Kirkuk she learns that Azim has been badly hurt in a bomb
blast and taken to Turkey for treatment. Desperate to track him down, Cennet sets off on an
arduous journey, her sense of resolve strengthened by blind fury and the fact that she has nothing
to lose. A pair of smugglers agrees to help her navigate the perilous mountain passes of northern
Iraq and cross illegally into Turkey.
Atıl İnaç studied philosophy at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and graduated
from Boğaziçi University in philosophy. He continued his academic studies at
Claremont Graduate University, specializing in the philosophy of language. From
2003 to 2007, after returning to Turkey, he spent all his time writing and directing
TV films and series for most of the major television networks. The director completed
his first feature film Zincirbozan in 2007. A Step into the Darkness, which was shot
in Iraq and Southeast Turkey, is his second feature film.

Omnibus of five short films that were shot in the Turkish province of Kars, on the border with
Armenia. Among the five directors are three debutants who were chosen to film their stories after
winning a scenario contest. The final result is a sympathetic collection of films that remain small and
simple: the puppy love between a boy and a girl on their winter trip to school, the memories of a
young woman about her mother’s response to her first menstruation and bra, and the story of a
student who returns to his village, but all too soon flees again for the past that is waiting for him
there. The stories take place strikingly often around the cemetery and look at things from the past
being revealed. The last contribution to the omnibus film is also significantly called ‘a small truth’.

Özcan Alper (Artvin, 1975) began his film career after studying physics at Istanbul University. His
first feature Autumn (2008) won numerous awards at national and international festivals.
Zehra Derya Koç (Mersin, 1977) graduated from Boğaziçi University with a degree in history. She
decided to continue her studies at Galatasaray University, this time choosing media studies and
communications as her discipline.
Ülkü Oktay (Ankara, 1980) studied architecture at the Middle East Technical University before going
on to write scripts and direct short films and music videos. Her screenplay Legless was named best
script at the Nisi Masa International Script Competition in Zagreb.
Ahu Öztürk (Istanbul, 1976) graduated from Ege University with a degree in philosophy. She
completed a master’s degree in film and television at Marmara University in 2002 and has been
working on various film projects since 2000.
Emre Akay (Ankara, 1978) studied law and economics in Paris. He co-directed his debut feature A

There tells the 24-hour story of a Turkish family. After his mother’s suicide, Mazhar, who was exiled
to France for 12 years, comes back to Istanbul. The reunion with his sister Neslihan is painful. After
the funeral, they decide to find their father and tell him about their mother’s death. Since their
separation, their father Erol has lived in isolation on an island. During their discussion, which is
full of both confessions and mutual recriminations, the family’s whole past resurfaces and all their
unspoken secrets come out.
Hakkı Kurtuluş (1980) studied communications, film and German language at
the Universities of Galatasaray, Lyon, Paris, Tübingen, Weimar and Berlin. He is a
graduate of Lumière University and old fellow of Ecole Normale Supérieure Lettres
et Sciences Humaines. Kurtuluş holds an MA degree in German studies from Ecole
Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. He is currently working on a Ph.D. at the same
school.
Melik Saraçoğlu (1984) studied film and literature under the double major program
at Lumière University Lyon 2 in France between 2003 and 2006. He also studied at
the University of Vienna in 2006. He has published several of his writings in Centuria

Celal lives an unhappy family life in a small town with his wife Sevilay and his son. Celal and his
brother Cemal run an electrical shop, but business isn’t good and they’re in debt. The only fun they
have is going to night clubs in Samsun. Celal’s love for Sibel Ceylan, who works in the night club,
promises to land him in trouble. Celal’s wife Sevilay saves up the money sent by her father, who has
been living in Germany for 15 years. But she doesn’t know that Celal knows her secret. Living an
unhappy life, Celal thinks that this money will be his salvation and he makes a plan.
The word ‘vavien’ derives from the French ‘va et vient’, literally ‘coming and going’. It is also an
international electrical term, denoting a two-way switch. Vavien is a black comedy infused with
elements of suspense which highlights inconsistencies and comings and goings as it follows the
characters’ dramatic moves.
Yağmur Taylan (Bursa, 1966) graduated in medicine from Uludağ University in 1990.
Between 1990-1995 he specialized in psychiatry at the Bakırköy Psychiatric Hospital.
In 1997 he started working with his brother as a producer and director. Since then,
he has worked on many television series, commercials and two feature films.
Durul Taylan (Bursa, 1969) graduated from the industrial engineering department of
Istanbul Technical University in 1990. After writing for various film magazines such

Derya works at a bank call centre and lives with her mother in a fairly standard middle-class
apartment block in Istanbul. Her mother, who worries about Derya being alone in life, pressurises
her constantly to get married; but Derya simply ignores these pleas and gets on with her humdrum,
routine life. Except that one day this is suddenly thrown upside down when she hears a supernatural
voice... To begin with, the Voice is no more than an inarticulate murmur; but as time goes on, so
it starts speaking to Derya in words she can understand. Convinced that she is hallucinating, the
young woman does her best to disregard the Voice; however, after a while she has no choice but to
listen. The Voice tells the chilling story of a young woman who confronts her own inner voice and
learns to accept herself as she is.
Ümit Ünal (1965) studied film and began working as a scriptwriter and assistant
director. He has written the screenplays for eight Turkish feature films. He began
shooting commercials in 1996 and made his feature debut as a director with 9. 9 won
a string of awards at various film festivals on the international circuit and was Turkey’s
official foreign language film selection for the Academy Awards in 2003. He wrote and
co-directed his second feature film Istanbul Tales in 2004 and has made another three
features since. He has also published two novels and a book of short stories.

The struggle for democracy in the dark and bloody days following the 12 September 1980 coup
brought the people into conflict with the state army. At a time when ‘unsolved’ murders were
rife, Gece, a four-year old girl, witnessed her parents being killed by the police in a house where
revolutionists were living. Years later, Gece agrees to become a suicide bomber for a revolutionist
organization in order to avenge her parents. But arriving in the city to settle scores, she finds herself
exploring the value of life, love and friendship when she meets the caretaker’s son Yusuf.
Serdar Akar (Ankara, 1964) graduated from the Film and Television Department of
Mimar Sinan University. He has won many awards at numerous festivals for his films,
which he wrote and directed himself. His most controversial film In the Bar, which
he wrote and directed in 2006, was widely spoken about.

Love stories have always told of women. The sufferers, the worriers, the unfairly treated have always
been women, leaving men cast as characters afraid of commitment, cynical about love and savvy at
breaking hearts. But is this really so? Are men as insensitive and cruel as they are portrayed in films?
Adını Sen Koy looks into this neglected aspect of love: the world of men. It considers the reflection
of love in that world, and how it affects life and friendships. Can is deeply in love with Aybige,
and plans to marry her. But when he introduces the love of his life to his childhood friend Ilgaz,
something strange happens: Ilgaz is surprisingly cool towards Aybige. His best friend’s attitude
raises Can’s suspicions about his fiancée and makes Aybige uneasy.
Tuna Kiremitçi (Eskişehir, 1973) had his first poems published as a student and won
many awards for them. His first novel was published in 2002 and was seen as one
of the big literary events of the year. He published his second novel and a collection
of poems in 2003. He studied cinematography at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University,
and his short films have won awards at several festivals. He is currently working as a
screenwriter and a columnist.

Asphyxia considers a middle-class Istanbul family that unravels after a mugging incident and its
various members begin to struggle to find their own way as individuals.
Aslı Özge (Istanbul, 1975) graduated from the film department of Marmara
University. In 2003, she directed her first feature film A Little Bit of April, co-produced
by ZDF/3sat. In 2009, her feature film Men on the Bridge won Best Film awards
at both the Istanbul and Adana Film Festivals and premiered internationally at the
Locarno and Toronto Film Festivals. Her upcoming feature film project Asphyxia is a
German-Turkish co-production, and has recently received development funding from
the Kuratorium junger deutscher Film.

Twelve-year old Hasan, whose father went to jail a year ago and mother has to work away from
home, is left on his own with his two siblings. The food his mother brings home once a week last
only a few days. Hasan finds a way to cope and buy bread by selling ayran (a yoghurt drink) at the
roadside. While the mother, the blacksmith Halil, Recep, Grandpa Kadir and the young passenger
are trying to find a way out of the vicious circle of life, their paths cross with Hasan’s in the deadend of a small, poverty-stricken village.
Selim Güneş (Borçka, 1961) graduated in electrical engineering. He works for
the advertising industry and has been interested in photography since 1989. His
photographs and articles have appeared in many magazines and publications. His
Istanbul portfolio was published in the UNESCO Courrier. He lives in Istanbul and
specializes in taking photographs of the city.

Hakim (15) and Faysal (14) have come to Istanbul from Mardin to find work. Within a short time
they become close friends with Medina (40) and her daughter Elma (13), refugees from Bosnia
who are waiting to be granted Turkish nationality. Although their real ambition is to go to Germany
from Istanbul, the two cousins from Mardin find themselves affectionately bound to Elma. With the
aim of ensuring a secure future for herself and her daughter, Medina suddenly disappears one day.
Helpless and alone, the girl is left at the mercy of Hakim and Faysal, whose original plans now fall
apart. The three children, now on a quest to find Medina, find themselves struggling to survive in
one of the world’s greatest metropolises…
Seyfettin Tokmak (Elazığ, 1978) graduated from the Film and Television Department
of Yeditepe University. He is currently working on his master’s thesis within the film
and television program of Istanbul Bilgi University. He has directed his own feature
films and been involved in many other feature and documentary productions as an

Sumru is doing a master’s degree in social anthropology at a university in Istanbul. To work on her
thesis, ‘Women and Elegies’, she sets off for the south-east of the country for a few months. The
brief trip turns out to be the longest journey of her life. She’s accompanied on the way by a black
crow ‘Mnemosyne’, who is a witness to all that happens. In the course of the trip, Sumru crosses
paths with Ahmet, a young guy selling bootleg DVDs on the streets of Diyarbakır, with Antranik, the
ageing and solitary warden of a crumbling church in the city, with Gülizar, whose husband has gone
missing while custody, and with Enver, an older man whose village has been evacuated. Sumru’s
research brings her face to face with other people’s suffering and calls on her to examine how they
deal with it.
Özcan Alper (Artvin, 1975) studied physics and the history of science at Istanbul
University. He attended cinema workshops at the Mesopotamia Culture Centre and
Nazım Cultural Centre between 1996-2001. Autumn, his first feature, was screened
at more than 60 festivals internationally and won 33 awards. The film achieved
150,000 admissions in Turkey and was nominated for the European Film Academy
European Discovery Awards. Alper is also artistic director of the Artvin Caucasus Film
Days and writes for the cinema magazine Yeni Film.

the documentary film Shadow Men about refugee life in Sweden. He also wrote the
book ‘Shadow In The Dark: Being a Refugee in Europe’ in 2007.

A father who leaves his daughter with his name and the bitter legacy of a 30-year civil war... A

Ender and Çetin, two men in their late thirties, have been close friends since high school. After being
away for many years, Çetin returns to Ankara, moves in with Ender, and as such, the two realize
their childhood dream. While on holiday in Turkey, Fikret, their close friend who lives abroad, has
a car accident in which his parents are killed. Since he has to return overseas, Fikret asks whether
his sister, Nihal, can stay with them until she graduates from university. At first, Ender and Çetin
are annoyed by the presence of a third party just when they have achieved their dream of living
together. After a while, however, sharing the same house draws the three together, and they soon
enjoy spending time with each other. Eventually, the inevitable happens: Ender and Çetin fall in love
with Nihal; each unaware of the other’s feelings.
Seyfi Teoman (Kayseri, 1977) studied economics at Boğazici University and then film
directing at Lodz Polish National Film School. He shot his short film, Apartment, in
2004 and then directed his first feature Summer Book in 2008. The film premiered
at the 58th Berlin Film Festival, travelled to many international festivals and received
many awards.

Derviş Zaim (1964) graduated from Boğaziçi University with a degree in management
and went on to earn an MA in film and cultural studies from the University of
Warwick in the UK. The first feature he wrote and directed, Somersault in a Coffin,
won several national and international awards. He followed this up with the awardwinning Elephants and Grass and then Mud, which won an award at Venice. He
currently teaches film at Istanbul’s Bilgi and Boğaziçi Universities.

Sitting dutifully by the sage was a pair of fine Anatolian sheepdogs. He pointed to the animals and
told the shepherd, “The male there is Karabaş, the female Kutlu. They’re fellows in all things. Take
them; they’re yours. Once committed, they’re committed for life. Just never let the dogs see blood.”
There were three bellwethers in the flock, three lead sheep: Kınalı, Badem and Çiçek. One night,
the wolves descended... The blood glistened in the light of the half moon; the leg of a sheep lay
discarded on the ground, while clusters of wool danced around in the chill night air. Karabaş seemed
to change after that night. He attacked the bits of flesh. And he made Kutlu a partner in crime.
Atalay Taşdiken (1964) graduated from Konya Selçuk University with a degree in
physics. In 1991, he began working in advertising, learning a broad range of skills
by turns as a dark room technician, media representative, copywriter and creative
director. Over the next 10 years, he went on to direct over 300 commercials and serve
as creative director on some 30 product campaigns. His first feature The Bogeyman
won critical acclaim and numerous awards at festivals all around the world.

Ships explores urban youth culture in Istanbul through the eyes of Ali, a 22-year-old free spirit. Ali
has a recurring dream about trying to get on a ship named ‘Distant’. Not sharing his parents’ middle
class values, he wants to leave his hometown in pursuit of a better life. When he meets Eda, a
tomboyish and striking beauty, who draws ship murals throughout the city, he is convinced that he
must find ‘Distant’ and Eda is meant to join him on his quest. Eda finds it hard to connect with Ali
at first, but is soon drawn to his uniqueness and lack of pretence. Wanting to see what is out there
in the world, Eda and Ali bond in a seemingly childish way and as they embark on an adventure to
find ‘Distant’, their lives are slowly thrown into chaos.
Elif Refiğ has an MFA in film from Columbia University. Her directing credits include
Roadwait, Esperanza Starring, Three Bodies and Man to Be With, for which she
received the Caucus Foundation and Open Society Institute Grants and the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association Best Foreign Filmmaker Award. Her feature
screenplay Devoted Details was a finalist for the Sundance Institute Screenwriters
Lab. She plans to shoot Ships, which was awarded a Turkish Ministry of Culture and
Tourism Script Development Grant, in the fall of 2010.

Somewhere in Between is a film project which explores how growing up and living in today’s world
are tantamount to being in ‘total limbo’. The narrative focuses on the desires, dreams, cravings,
viewpoints, expectations and loves of two adolescents stuck in the threshold of purgatory and
chained to their anguish. It is the story of enduring a plastic world suppressed, de-valued and
debased by artificial, illusory expectations - a process that also deepens immutable social inequalities.
After making several award-winning shorts in Turkey, Yeşim Ustaoğlu won
international recognition for her 1999 film, Journey to the Sun, which received the
Blue Angel Award and the Peace Prize in Berlin, among other prizes. Her third film,
Waiting for the Clouds, was awarded NHK Sundance International Filmmaker’s
award. Ustaoğlu’s fourth film, Pandora’s Box, which tells the story of an old
woman with Alzheimer’s disease, won the Best Film and Best Actress awards at San
Sebastian. After screening at numerous international festivals and winning many
awards, the film obtained theatrical release in several countries around the world.

Zeynel and his wife Gülizar, who live in Diyarbakır, move into a larger apartment as they’re expecting
a baby. With the prospect of becoming a father, Zeynel’s memories about his own father Mustafa,
who died when he was just a child, re-emerge and he starts listening to the sound recordings that
his father used to send them. Zeynel’s mother Base, who lives in Elbistan, gave him only one of these
recordings. She didn’t part with the others because she was worried they might get damaged or
lost. When his mother, who normally spends the winters with Zeynel and his family in Diyarbakır,
makes up various excuses and doesn’t visit them for a long time, Zeynel gets worried and goes to
Elbistan to check up on her.
Orhan Eskiköy graduated from Ankara University in 2004 with a degree in
filmmaking. He shot many short documentaries as a student. Eskiköy’s first feature
film On the Way to School had its world premiere at the IDFA in 2008, and has since
travelled to many national and international festivals, winning several awards.

Zeynel Doğan graduated from Anadolu University in 2001 with a degree in filmmaking.
After working for various TV channels in Istanbul, he moved to Diyarbakır where he

The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony in rural Anatolia.
A middle-aged groom with a large moustache and his bride, covered in a red bridal veil; guests
dancing around them and guns fired into the air: an extravagant wedding ceremony is being held
with two bands of drums and horns. At the end of the celebrations, which last until midnight, the
bride is led ceremoniously to the bridal chamber. The bride and her sister-in-law are then left alone in
the room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on, the
camera remains inside the bridal chamber. With her face draped in a red veil, the bride sits waiting
for the groom, reacting oddly to the noises she hears outside.
Reis Çelik (Ardahan, 1961) studied music and drama at the Istanbul State Conservatoire.
In 1982, he began working as an economics and political correspondent for various
national newspapers. After a succession of documentary films, he made his first
feature Let There be Light in 1996. This was followed in 1998 by Goodbye Tomorrow,
a dramatisation of the story of late 1960s student leader Deniz Gezmiş. He made his
third feature Tales of Intransigence, an improvised docudrama about the storytelling
tradition in northeast Anatolia, in 2003.

Where the Fire Burns is a road story. Ayse suddenly falls sick and is hospitalized for an urgent
operation. Her family is hugely supportive at first, but during the operation the girl is found to be 14
weeks pregnant. Once recovered from the successful surgery, Ayse refuses to reveal who the father
of her baby is. And the family who rallied to save her life now tries to kill her. Her father Osman, who
takes on the task of killing her, sets off on a trip with Ayse. While Osman is plotting to poison his
daughter, Ayse is blindly unaware of his intent. This trip by father and daughter is a time of getting
to know each other, a process tinged with regrets.
İsmail Güneş (Samsun, 1961) began his filmmaking career in 1977 as an assistant to
Natuk Baytan. He made his first short film the same year and went on to direct his
first feature Before the Sun Rises in 1986. His 1999 feature Where the Rose Wilted,
a drama about the violence exerted on the individual by the powers that be, was the
first film to be banned in the country for 20 years. He followed this with Nothing
Else Left To Be Said, the second film of his trilogy on violence, and aims to finish the
third film, Where the Fire Burns, in 2010.

When Murat comes to the Island of Gökçeada (Imbros) for his photography exhibition he learns that
Madame Stilyani has died. He had spent two years working with her for the show, recording her
voice and photographing her. Eleni, who lives at France, is Madame Stilyani’s granddaughter and
sole inheritor, and she has come to the island to arrange her grandmother’s funeral. Inevitably, she
meets Murat just as she’s thinking that this is perhaps she her last trip to the island. In the light of
Murat’s project, an epiphany begins and Eleni embarks on a mythical and spiritual journey towards
her roots in history.
Selim Evci (Istanbul, 1975) studied film at Maltepe University and earned a master’s
degree in film at Beykent University, Istanbul. He founded Evci Film Production in
2006. He wrote, directed, produced and edited his first feature film Two Lines,
which had its world premiere in Venice and was screened at many international
festivals. He is currently at the development stage of his second feature Winds which
is supported by Hubert Bals Fund 2010 for its script and development.

The central idea behind Zephyr is based on a child’s umbilical attachment to her mother: how she
longs to be one with her, as when she was inside her, evading the pains and sorrows of growing
up. My primary sources of inspiration for this film are my great-grandmother’s country house in the
foothills of the Eastern Black Sea Mountains, as well as real-life situations and individuals from my
family history. However, the film has a fictional storyline and ending.
In my debut short Boreas - a prelude to Zephyr, which was nominated for the Palm d’Or in Cannes
2006 - I set out to depict a child’s first encounter with death, encapsulated in those splendid visions
of early childhood. My first feature Zephyr expands on similar themes of loss, fear of abandonment,
loneliness and death, and aims all along to portray the human condition versus nature’s condition...
Belma Baş
Belma Baş (Ordu, 1969) earned her BA in English Literature from Istanbul University
in 1992. A literary translator for two decades, she also worked for Turkish film
organizations as an international relations consultant and festival manager from
1991 to 1998. Her debut short film Boreas premiered in the official competition at
Cannes. Zephyr is her first feature-length film.

International Filmmor Women’s Film Festival on Wheels
12 March-18 April 2010 - Istanbul, Creteil (France), Kars, Sinop
Filmmor Women’s Film Festival is held every year in Istanbul and goes
on to tour different cities at the invitation and with the support of
other women’s organizations. Festival screenings are categorized into
sections carrying themes like ‘violence against women’, ‘honour’ and
‘body’. The programme also focuses on the place of women’s cinema
and includes collective presentations, Q&A sessions, panel discussions
and workshops. Intentionally, there is no competition section, a
decision based on the argument that women don’t need to compete
with each other, whereas they do need to stick together. The festival
provides the opportunity for women to be together with their dreams,
ideas, productions, to watch women’s experiences as told by women
and to watch examples of cinema that rarely reach commercial theatres.

International Istanbul Film Festival

As the largest, oldest and most influential film event in Turkey, the
Festival has over the past 29 years presented Istanbul audiences
with a total of more than 3000 films, showcasing the cinema of 103
countries, and attracting total audience numbers of 2,900,000. With a
National, International and Human Rights competition endorsed by the
Council of Europe, the festival screens around 200 feature films each
year, awarding the Golden Tulip as its main prize. With an audience
of 162,000 in 2009, it also ranks as the largest Turkish film festival.
Accredited by FIAPF in 1989, the Festival incorporates the Meetings on
the Bridge programme, a sidebar that includes a competitive Feature

International Environmental Short Film Festival

The Festival focuses on fiction, documentary or animation short films

After spreading its wings to south-east Turkey for the 2008 and 2009
editions, the MiniBank International Children’s Film Festival will continue
the tradition this year, welcoming young film audiences in Diyarbakır
and Adıyaman between 23-30 April 2010. Organized jointly by Garanti
Bank and TÜRSAK (Turkish Foundation of Cinema and Audiovisual
Culture), the Festival sets out to present young film lovers in south-east
Turkey with first-rate animation and family films from across the world.
The festival is supported by local government and municipalities and
aims to draw young audiences not only from the city centre, but also

Founded in 1998 as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Anadolu
University, the original ‘Cinema Days’ event was renamed as the
International Eskişehir Film Festival in 2007. The Festival is organized by

Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival

The Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival has been running
since 1998 with the goal of using the narrative of cinema to raise public
awareness of gender issues. From its very first year, the Festival has
screened feature films, shorts and documentaries, organized panel
discussions and exhibitions. The organization has also produced
documentaries on Turkish cinema and published a number of books.
A short film story competition has been organized annually since the
Festival’s second edition in 1999. The Festival has been growing year
by year and is the only women’s film festival in the world since 2003 to
give the FIPRESCI (International Film Critic’s Federation) Award.

International Golden Boll Film Festival

First held in 1969 and taking its name from the traditional crop grown
in the region, the Golden Boll Film Festival is held in Adana, a city
located along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. The Festival has been
reaching new heights each year by continually enriching its program
and further widening the door opening onto world cinema. Organized
by the Adana Municipality, the film festival has to date included fulllength feature films along with nationally produced short films and
student films, thus providing considerable support to these efforts.
Beginning from 2008, a decision was made to broaden the scope of
the festival to an international dimension within the framework of
Mediterranean countries. The festival is now opening its doors to all
Mediterranean short film directors and film students.

DOCUMENTARIST - Istanbul Documentary Days
15-20 June 2010 - Istanbul
The Festival, which aims to present noteworthy documentaries to
Turkish audiences, was first organised in June 2009, bringing selected
documentaries from around the world to Istanbul for six days. To
mark World Peace Day, Documentarist organized the ‘Peace Films
for 1 September’ event between 1-3 September 2009, and followed
this up from December 14-17 2009 with a mini-festival dedicated to
Human Rights Week under the banner ‘Which Human Rights?’. In
2010, Documentarist initiated Saturday documentary screenings in
a programme called SaturDox. Documentarist currently seeks both
to raise the profile of documentary films in Turkey and to send local
productions to festivals abroad, but will be setting its sights ever higher
in the years ahead.

International 1001 Documentary Film Festival

Documentary Filmmakers Association (BSB) promotes documentary
filmmaking by creating innovative exhibition channels beyond
television to bring documentaries to audiences. Ultimately, the goal
is to create an environment conducive to regular theatrical exhibition.
For over five years, BSB has organized the annual International 1001
Documentary Festival, the first international festival in Turkey dedicated
exclusively to documentaries. BSB also organizes and takes part in
various other festivals and specialized events throughout Turkey. It
organizes screenings with discussion sessions at universities, cultural
and municipal centres across Turkey, which are open to the public and
free of charge.

International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival

The International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, the only longlasting film festival in Turkey, will celebrate its 47th anniversary this
year. The Festival, which became international five years ago, is also
one of the traditional film events of Europe. The 47th Festival will take
place between the dates 9-16 October 2010 and is organized by the
Antalya Foundation for Culture and Arts (AKSAV) in cooperation with
the Metropolitan Municipality of Antalya.

First organized in 2002, Filmekimi was conceived as a compact, oneweek film festival that would take place in October, heralding the new,
upcoming cinema season in Turkey. From 2006 to 2008, Filmekimi
launched a film competition for digitally-shot short films incorporated
within the International Istanbul Film Festival in April. In 2009, the film
week was expanded in response to audience interest to include two
weekends and last for nine days. The Filmekimi programme typically
includes 20-21 films screened at one or two movie theatres, and a gala
screening each evening. An audience record was broken in 2009 with
43,000 viewers.

As the biggest short film event of Turkey, the International Izmir
Short Film Festival is the only short film festival in Turkey to present
an international award scheme. Supported by the Ministry of Culture

Bursa International Silk Road Film Festival
10-19 December 2010 - Bursa
Organized by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the Festival has
become one of the most prominent film festivals in Turkey despite
its short history. The fifth edition of the Festival will be held from 1019 December 2010, lending colour to the artistic and cultural life of
Bursa. By providing an international competition for debut directors,
the festival aims to honour and encourage future filmmakers, as well as
support them financially for forthcoming projects. The Best Film of the
International Golden Karagöz Film Competition for directorial debuts
wins $40,000. The Festival also runs an international competition for
fictional shorts produced after 1 January 2010, which have no dialogue
or voice-overs and don’t exceed 20 minutes in length. The best film will
receive the Golden Karagöz Award and $6000.
