Nutopia
Die konzeptuelle Nation Nutopia wurde am 1. April 1973 von Yoko Ono und ihrem Mann John
Lennon gegründet. Der Text von Lennons weltberühmten Lied Imagine gab Ausschlag zur
Konzeption von Nutopia die besagt, dass es „kein Staatsgebiet, keine Grenzen, keine Pässe,
sondern nur Leute gibt. Nutopia anerkennt keine anderen Gesetze als die kosmischen. Alle
Bewohner sind Botschafter von Nutopia. Die Bürgerschaft kann erlangt werden indem man
erklärt, dass man sich der Existenz von Nutopia bewusst ist.“
Die Hymne von Nutopia besteht aus wenigen Sekunden der Stille, was auf den Einfluss von
Johne Cage, einem engen Mitarbeiter von Ono, zurückzuführen ist. Die Fahne ist ein weisses
Stofftaschentuch, das Siegel ein Seehund (Siegel und Seehund wird im Englischen mit dem
gleichen Wort bezeichnet). Am Eingang des Dakota Buildings in New York, der ehemaligen
Wohnadresse von Ono und Lennon, weist eine gravierte Tafel auf die „Botschaft von Nutopia“
hin.
Nutopia
Le 1er avril 1973, jour des poissons d’avril, Yoko Ono et John Lennon fondèrent une nation
conceptuelle, la Nutopie. La loi organique de la Nutopie s’inspire des paroles d’une célèbre
chanson de Lennon, Imagine. Selon une déclaration officielle, la Nutopie : «ne possède ni
territoire, ni frontières, ni passeports ; elle n’abrite que des gens. La Nutopie ne reconnaît pas
d’autres lois que les lois cosmiques. Tous les citoyens de Nutopie sont les ambassadeurs de leur
pays. Pour obtenir la citoyenneté, il suffit de déclarer qu’on a entendu parler de la Nutopie.»
Dans la tradition de John Cage, proche collaborateur de Yoko Ono, l’hymne national nutopien
(qui figure sur l’album Mind Games de John Lennon) consiste en quelques secondes de silence.
Le drapeau nutopien est entièrement blanc. Le sceau officiel représente un phoque (en anglais, «
sceau » et « phoque » se traduisent tous deux par un homonyme, seal). Enfin, une plaque portant
l’inscription AMBASSADE DE NUTOPIE fut apposée à l’entrée du Dakota Building, où
vivaient Yoko Ono et John Lennon à New York.
Nutopia
On April Fool’s Day, 1973, conceptual artist Yoko Ono, together with her husband and frequent
collaborator John Lennon, founded the conceptual nation of Nutopia. The informal Organic Law
of Nutopia was framed around the lyrics put to Lennon’s Imagine. The official declaration of
Nutopia states that "[it] has no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people. Nutopia has no
laws other than cosmic. All people of Nutopia are ambassadors of the country. Citizenship of the
country can be obtained by declaration of your awareness of Nutopia." Perhaps following the
influence of John Cage, a close associate of Ono’s, the Nutopian anthem (included on Lennon’s
album Mind Games) consists of only a few seconds of silence. The flag of Nutopia is white. The
official seal of Nutopia is a seal, the sea-mammal. A plaque engraved with the words
"NUTOPIAN EMBASSY" was installed at Ono and Lennon’s home, the Dakota building in New
York City.
