Hadi Teherani
Herr Teherani, was bringt einen Architekten wie Sie
dazu, für bzw. mit OWA „an die Decke zu gehen“?
Haben diese funktionalen Rücksichten Sie beim
Entwerfen beeinträchtigt?
Ich fand das Design klassischer abgehängter Raumdecken
schon immer ausgesprochen entwicklungsfähig. Man braucht
eigentlich nur etwas Phantasie und eine Portion technischer
Fachberatung, um aus traditionellen Rechteckdecken echte
Solitäre zu machen und Flächen zu zaubern, die im wahrsten
Sinne des Wortes für Aufsehen sorgen. Kurzum: Mir ging es um
die Raumdecke als Gesamtphänomen, das hat mich gereizt.
Eher beflügelt. Uns wurde schnell klar, dass wir auch ein Set
passender Funktionsmodule würden mitentwickeln müssen,
zum Beispiel Lichtelemente. Was die Akustik angeht, würden
wir uns natürlich voll und ganz auf die Erfahrungen der Mitarbeiter von OWAconsult® verlassen müssen, soviel stand fest.
Und warum ausgerechnet mit OWA?
Was die Untersichten angeht, haben wir etwa PunktrasterPlatten entwickelt, homogen und mit Verlauf, farblich indivi­
dualisierbar, was tolle Flächenbilder erlaubt. Und mit unseren
Ornamentmustern kann man die guten alten Schachbrettmuster
auflösen und faszinierende Endlosmuster ent­wickeln. Oder eben
orthogonale Systeme in organische Räume integrieren. Der
Architekt hat die volle Freiheit, sich auch an der Decke zu verwirklichen.
Einerseits natürlich wegen des Markennamens. OWA steht in
Deutschland für Deckensysteme, wie z. B. Tempo für das
Papiertaschentuch. Zweitens wegen der eigenen Beratungs­
abteilung. Mit OWAconsult® kann man neue Konzepte zügig
umsetzen, das geht direkt von Entscheider zu Entscheider, da
sitzen nicht noch zig Abteilungen dazwischen. Diese Arbeitsweise hat uns von Anfang an gefallen.
Was ist die tragende Idee hinter Ihren gemeinsamen
Deckenentwürfen?
Wir hätten natürlich einfach neue Dessins machen können.
Aber wir wollten mehr, eine Art Paradigmawechsel auf dem
Segment. Wir wollten einen Baukasten entwickeln, der es jedem
Innenarchitekten oder Planer ermöglicht, aus einfachen For­­ma­
ten, Formen und Mustern eine unendliche Variation individueller
Deckenbilder zu erzeugen. Mit diesen Deckenbildern kann sich
der Anwender dann gestalterisch überzeugend auf den Raum,
seine Gliederung und seine Nutzung beziehen.
Und die gestalterischen Prinzipien?
Wohin gehen Ihrer Meinung nach die Trends im
Bereich Raumdecke?
Technisch wird die Entwicklung klar von zwei Tenden­zen bestimmt: einmal vom Bauen im Bestand – also Umbauen und
Sanieren, zweitens vom technischen Faktor Bauteilaktivierung.
Beides führt weg von der klassischen voll abgehängten Decke
im Rechteck-Format. Und auch da haben wir uns etwas ein­
fallen lassen.
Die Lamellen-Lösungen der OWAconsult® collection ...
„Square“ und „Cloud“, genau. Sie wirken leicht und offen, drängen sich nicht auf und erzeugen trotzdem wunderbar harmonische Flächeneindrücke. Eindrücke, die natürlich ins Unterbewusstsein der Menschen wirken sollen, die den Raum nutzen
bzw. in ihm arbeiten. Denn darum geht es uns ja am Ende: Wir
sollen uns wohlfühlen, auch und vor allem dort, wo wir arbeiten
und einen großen Teil unseres Lebens verbringen.

Mr. Teherani, what motivates an architect like you to
“hit the ceiling” with a company like OWA?
I always felt the design of classic suspended ceilings held a
great deal of potential. You really only need a little imagination
and a portion of technical specialist consulting to turn traditional
rectangular ceilings into real unique pieces and conjure up
spectacular surface images that really cause a stir without caus­
ing an unnecessary distraction. Or in short: for me it was all
about the ceiling as an overall phenomenon, that interested me.
And why with OWA?
Firstly, of course, the name attracted me. In Germany, OWA is
as synonymous with ceiling systems as Kleenex is with paper
tissues. Secondly, the company’s own consulting department
was a big motivation for me. OWAconsult® allows concepts to
be implemented quickly, decision-makers speak to one another
directly. There aren’t dozens of departments in-­between. This
approach appealed to us from the very beginning.
What is the main idea behind your joint ceiling
designs?
We could, of course, have simply created new patterns. But we
wanted more, a kind of paradigm shift in the segment. We want­
ed to develop a model kit that allows every interior designer or
planner to use simple formats, shapes and patterns to create an
infinite variety of individual ceiling looks. With these ceiling
looks, the user can create a convincing design in keeping with
the room, its arrangement and utilisation.
How much of a limitation was posed by the functional
requirements that you needed to take into account,
e. g. acoustics, fire protection, structural analysis?
It was actually more of an inspiration. For instance, we quickly
realised that we also needed to develop a set of matching
functional modules such as lighting elements. When it came to
acoustics, it was also clear that we would have to rely entirely
on the experience of the OWAconsult® team.
And what about the design principles?
When it came to the soffits, for instance, we developed point
grid panels, with both homogenous and continuous designs
and customisable in colour, allowing the creation of exquisite
surface images. And with our ornamental patterns it is possible
to move on from the good old chess board patterns and devel­
op fascinating continuous motifs. Or integrate orthogonal systems in organic rooms. The architect has complete freedom to
stamp his or her personality on the ceiling, too.
In your opinion, where are the trends heading in the
field of ceilings?
The design requirements are becoming ever more demanding,
especially in modern office buildings with a feel-good concept.
This means that the ceiling as a component is gaining in
importance, a trend that also calls for more professional solutions including thorough consultation. On a technical level, the
development is clearly driven by two tendencies: firstly by
construction work in existing buildings, i. e. redevelopment and
renovation, and secondly by the technical factor of component
activation. Both lead us away from the classical fully suspended
ceiling in rectangular format. And we’ve come up with something here, too.
The baffle solutions from the OWAconsult®
collection ...
Exactly, “Square” and “Cloud” from our “Elements” series. They
have a light and open effect, do not dominate the room but still
generate wonderfully harmonious surface impressions. Impressions that, of course, should have an effect on the subconscious
of the people who use or work in the room. Because that’s what
it’s all about in the end: we should feel good, even and above all
in the place where we work and spend a large part of our lives.
