Thomas Sterchi: Der Event strahlt weit darüber
hinaus. Letztes Jahr hat BBC World einen achtminütigen Beitrag gesendet. Der Chefredakteur der
„Times“ ist Stammgast und die ARD hat bereits
mehrfach zur besten Sendezeit berichtet.
diese müssen dem Geist, dem Potenzial und der
Tradition des Ortes angepasst sein. Jeder Ort, der
touristisch überleben will, muss sich auf seine
Stärken fokussieren, muss sich seine eigene
Exklusivität schaffen. Und ich verhehle nicht,
dass gewisse Orte ihre Ambitionen werden aufgeben müssen. Es wird, wie man so schön sagt,
Marktaustritte geben.

Herr Staatsrat, wie oft haben Sie schon Zermatt
Unplugged besucht?
Festival-Präsident Thomas Sterchi (45) und der
Walliser Staatsrat Jean-Michel Cina (51), für Wirtschaft und Tourismus zuständig, trafen sich zum
Gespräch in Sitten (VS). Ist Zermatt Unplugged
jetzt nur gut für Zermatt, den Schweizer Tourismus
oder sogar für die ganze Welt? Ein Unternehmer
aus Zürich und ein Walliser Spitzenpolitiker lernen
sich kennen.
Jean-Michel Cina: Leider noch nie. Ich habe mehrfach bedauert, nicht dabei gewesen zu sein.
Halten Sie Zermatt Unplugged für unwichtig?
Cina: Nein, nein, nein, ganz im Gegenteil. Zermatt
Unplugged ist ein neuer Stern am Zermatter
Himmel. Dank dem Unternehmergeist von Thomas
Sterchi: Die Tourismusfachschule Chur hat eine
Wertschöpfungsrechnung angestellt und ist auf bis
zu sieben Millionen Zusatzeinnahmen für Zermatt
gekommen. Da sind aber die nicht bezifferbaren
wirtschaftlichen Nebeneffekte noch nicht mitgerechnet, zum Beispiel die weltweite PR für Zermatt
dank der Präsenz internationaler Medien.
Cina: Was ebenfalls sehr wichtig ist: Ein solcher
Anlass bereichert das Winterprogramm, schafft
neue Erlebnisse und lockt so auch Leute an, die
sich zwar gern in der Bergwelt aufhalten, aber
keine Wintersportler sind. Sie finden hier eine
attraktive Mischung von Berg, Gastronomie
und Kultur. Und die ganze Destination profitiert:
Transportunternehmen, Catering, Beherbergung,
Gastronomie, Imagewerbung.
Herr Cina, Sie sind auch Vorstandsmitglied
von Schweiz Tourismus. Diese Branche hat
schon vorher gern gejammert, aber nach dem
Franken-Schock von Mitte Januar ist das Wehklagen sehr laut geworden. Wäre ein Event wie
Zermatt Unplugged auch ein Rezept für andere
Destinationen?
Cina: Tourismusdestinationen müssen, wie
gesagt, neue Erlebniswelten schaffen. Aber
Sterchi: Eins zu eins ist Zermatt Unplugged sicher
nicht übertragbar. Erlebnisse müssen massgeschneidert sein. Für Zermatt würde ich das so
umschreiben: den alpinen Lifestyle geniessen ohne
zwingend ein hardcore Berggänger zu sein.
Herr Sterchi, Sie hatten Ihren Hauptwohnsitz
in Zermatt, als Sie das Festival gründeten. Aber
was war überhaupt Ihre Motivation, Zermatt
Unplugged ins Leben zu rufen?
Sterchi: Wir haben vor acht Jahren ganz klein angefangen, um die grösste Bühne Zermatts besser
zu nutzen, diejenige von Heinz Julens Vernissage,
dessen Pächter ich damals war, und um das
kulturelle und das Nachtleben zu bereichern. Dabei
haben wir uns gefragt, was typisch sein könnte für
Zermatt, und wir sind auf das Thema „unplugged“
gestossen, was gewisse Arten von Musik zum Vornherein ausschliesst. Wir wollten nicht „just another
festival“ sein. Wir haben mit dem Ort gespielt, mit
seinen Ecken, seiner Geografie, seinem Geist.
Also kein DJ Ötzi in Zermatt. Herr Cina, haben Sie
Zermatt Unplugged nie besucht, weil Ihnen der
Musikstil nicht gefällt?
Cina: Im Gegenteil, es ist absolut mein Stil. Ich
mag zum Beispiel Frauen, die Balladen singen.
Amy Macdonald (trat 2012 in Zermatt auf) hätte
mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen. Dieses Jahr wird
Patricia Kaas bestimmt sehr gut ankommen.
Aber auch James Blunt würde mich interessieren.

Der Ausdruck Top-Event stimmt sowohl in
kultureller als auch in finanzieller Hinsicht. Wie
viel zusätzliche Einnahmen generiert Zermatt
Unplugged?

Cina: Ja, das kommt noch hinzu: Zermatt
Unplugged bietet auch Walliser Künstlern eine
Plattform, die international wahrgenommen wird.
Jean-Michel Cina: Not yet, unfortunately. I have
often regretted not having been.
Do you regard Zermatt Unplugged as unimportant?
Ein Geheimtipp von mir, Herr Staatsrat, wenn
Sie Frauen mögen, die Balladen singen: Heather
Nova – fantastisch. Herr Sterchi, Sie entscheiden ja mit beim Engagement der Acts. Nach
welchen Kriterien wählen Sie die Künstler aus?
Sterchi: Ich spielte als Kind Klavier, hörte aber
gegen den Rat meiner Mutter damit auf. Später
habe ich diesen Entscheid bereut.

discussion in Sion (VS). Is Zermatt Unplugged only
good for Zermatt and perhaps Swiss tourism, or
even for the whole world? An entrepreneur from
Zurich and a leading Valais politician get to know
each other.
So no DJ Ötzi in Zermatt. Mr. Cina, have you never
visited Zermatt Unplugged because you don’t like
the style of the music?
Mr. Cina, you are also a Member of the Board of
Swiss Tourism. The industry has always liked to
lament, but the complaints have become very loud
since the Swiss Franc shock in the middle of January. Would an event like Zermatt Unplugged also be
a model for other destinations?
Cina: Quite the contrary, it’s absolutely my style. For
example, I like women who sing ballads. I really like
Amy Macdonald (who appeared in Zermatt in 2012)
and Patricia Kaas will certainly go down very well
this year. But James Blunt would also interest me.
Cina: As I said before, tourist destinations must
offer new experiences. But these experiences must
fit with the spirit, the potential and the tradition of
the location. Any location that wants to survive as
a tourist destination must focus on its strengths
and create its own exclusiveness. And I cannot
deny that certain locations will have to abandon
their ambitions. There will be, to put it nicely, some
market exits.
Sterchi: Das hat viel mit meinen Vorlieben zu tun,
und ich möchte zu den Künstlern stehen können,
die vorne auf der Bühne performen. Aber wir achten auch auf eine gewisse Breite des Angebots,
also Acts für eher ältere Zuhörer und solche für
die jüngeren. Aber unser Leitmotiv „unplugged“
müssen alle erfüllen – mehr oder weniger.
Machen Sie selber Musik?

Cina: No, no, no, quite the contrary. Zermatt Unplugged is a new star in the Zermatt sky. Thanks to
the entrepreneurial spirit of Thomas Sterchi, a top
event has arisen here for Zermatt and for the whole
of Valais.
Thomas Sterchi: The event reaches much further
than that. Last year BBC World transmitted an eightminute program. The chief editor of "The Times" is a
regular guest here and the ARD has reported on the
event a number of times at peak hours.
The expression Top Event is true from both a cultural and a financial aspect. How much additional
revenue does Zermatt Unplugged generate?
Sterchi: The School of Tourism in Chur has carried
out an added-value calculation and came to additional income of up to seven million for Zermatt. This
does not include the non-quantifiable economic
advantages such as global PR for Zermatt thanks to
the presence of the international press.
Cina: Another very important factor is that an event
like this enriches the winter program, creates new
experiences and thereby also attracts people who
like staying in the mountains but do not do winter
sports. They find an attractive mix of mountains,

Sterchi: And although I was never a fan of Sina, she
has released an absolutely top album.
Cina: Yes, and that’s something else to it: Zermatt
Unplugged also offers artists from Valais a platform
that attracts international attention.
Here’s an insider tip from me, Councillor, if you
like women who sing ballads: Heather Nova
– fantastic. Mr. Sterchi, you have a say in the
engagement of the acts. What are the criteria you
select the artists by?
Sterchi: Zermatt Unplugged certainly cannot be
transferred one-to-one. Experiences have to be
tailor-made. I would describe it as follows for Zermatt: enjoying the alpine lifestyle without having
to be a 'hardcore' mountaineer.
Mr Sterchi, your principle residence was in Zermatt
when you founded the festival. But what was the
motivation that led you to bring Zermatt Unplugged
to life?
Sterchi: We started very small eight years ago.In
order to make better use of the largest stage in Zermatt, the stage in Heinz Julen’s Vernissage, whose
tenant I was at the time – and to enhance the culture and night life of Zermatt. We asked ourselves
what could be typical for Zermatt, and we came
to the idea of "unplugged", which would exclude
certain types of music from the very start. We didn’t
want to be just another festival. We played with the
place, with its corners, its geography, its spirit.
Sterchi: It has a lot to do with my preferences. I
want to be able to stand behind the artists who
appear on the stage. But we also pay attention to
a certain breadth of the selection. In other words,
we ensure that we provide some acts for somewhat
older listeners and some for younger guests. But
they all have to comply with our "unplugged" motto,
more or less.
Do you play music yourself?
Sterchi: I played piano when I was a child, but gave
up despite my mother's advice. I’ve come to regret
this decision later.

23:15 fährt ein Extrazug der MGBahn ab Zermatt
bis Visp und Brig. Von Donnerstag bis Samstag

Österreich auf der Erfolgswelle deutschsprachiger Pop-Rock-Musik und überzeugt auch in der
Schweiz mit ihren Alben Lebe lauter und In dieser
Stadt. 2008 überraschte sie ihre Fans mit dem
Unplugged-Album laut-Los, das wegen seiner
Stilwechsel und ungewöhnlichen Instrumentierung
hochgelobt wurde.
Christina Stürmer, one of the most popular
German-speaking singers, is making a guest
appearance at Zermatt Unplugged. Since the
middle of the 2000’s, this energy bundle from
Lower Austria’s wine region is riding the wave of
success of German-language pop-rock music, and
has also gained followers in Switzerland with her
albums Lebe lauter and In dieser Stadt. In 2008,
she surprised her fans with her unplugged album
laut-Los, which also gained the highest praise
from music critics for her change in style and the
unusual instrumentation.
Gently rippling waves and crashing surf on the
crevasses of the petrified Piedmontese-Ligurian
ocean, Heather Nova, an artist from Bermuda, is
coming to the high mountains of Valais. Since the
90s, she has been mentioned along with Alanis
Morissette, Tori Amos or Sheryl Crow. She has
been on tour for 20 years, with a wanderlust that
she gained in her formative years while growing
up on a sailing boat as the daughter of a hippie.
On her new album 300 Days at Sea, Nova once
again performs with a band, as on her albums

die Band wieder auf Festivals in Grossbritannien
zu sehen. Alcoholic, Fever, Good Souls, Four to the
Floor – nicht nur als Vorband der Rolling Stones,
U2 oder The Police lösten Starsailor einen grossen
Hype aus. 2007 beehrten sie als eine der ersten
Bands das Zermatt Unplugged. 2010 und 2012
war Frontmann James Walsh als Solist zu Gast am
Matterhorn. Es gibt wohl keinen Musiker, der das
Festival so gut kennt wie er.

Starsailor, the melodic Britpop band, are back
and will be rocking the stages. The band has been
seen again at festivals in Great Britain in 2014.
Alcoholic, Fever, Good Souls, Four to the Floor
– Starsailor didn’t just start a great hype as the
opening act for the Rolling Stones, U2 or The Police. They were also one of the first bands to appear
at Zermatt Unplugged in 2007. Their frontman,
James Walsh, also made a guest appearance as a
soloist in the Matterhorn village in 2010 and 2012.
There’s probably no other musician who knows
the festival as well as he does.

Gast am Zermatt Unplugged. Einen Tag nach
ihrem Gig tauchte Skye im schwarzen Mantel in
der Blue Lounge im Skigebiet auf. Jetzt ist Skye
wieder zurück und Ross, Gründer von Morcheeba,
begleitet sie auf der Gitarre. Diesmal treten sie
am intimen Setting der Sunnegga Sessions auf,
denn die Berge haben es ihnen angetan. Skye &
Ross performen für nur 100 Gäste das Chill-out
zum Sonnenuntergang.

ans Matterhorn. Ende der 80er kam das „all American girl“ aus
Kansas nach L.A. „Überall wurde Heavy Metal gespielt. Da
war kein Platz für ein Mädchen mit Akustikgitarre“, erzählt
Etheridge. An Selbstbewusstsein mangelte es ihr nicht. Schon
mit 11 Jahren gewann sie einen Song-Wettbewerb in ihrer
Heimatstadt. Ihr Album Melissa Etheridge, auf dem sich die
Hymnen Like The Way I Do und Bring Me Some Water befinden,
begründete 1988 ihre Karriere.
More than 27 million albums sold, two Grammys, an Oscar:
the rock icon Melissa Etheridge will be making a slight detour
to the Matterhorn. The "all-American girl" left Kansas for
L.A. at the end of the 80s. "Heavy metal was being played
everywhere. There was just no place for a girl with an acoustic
guitar", says Etheridge. But she’s not lacking in self-confidence. At the tender age of 11, she won a song competition in
her hometown. Her Melissa Etheridge album, featuring the
hymns Like The Way I Do and Bring Me Some Water, established her career in 1988.

return flight from Geneva to the USA: "Wake me up when

singer of the mega-hit Wake Me Up, which was produced by

world into this song. Wake Me Up, his latest interpretation
in acoustic version, has even surpassed his success of his

in 2012, Philipp Poisel is the second Germanlanguage singer-songwriter to appear on a stage
of the festival. Poisel is under contract with
Grönland Records, the label of Herbert Grönemeyer. With his live project, the Seerosenteich
album, he reached No. 1 in the German album
charts. Wherever meaningful music is appreciated in German-speaking countries, the name of
Philipp Poisel will be heard. He manages to turn
any stage into a living room and convey each
word to every individual listener. His concert at
Zermatt Unplugged will be his only concert in

British singer Gabrielle celebrated her 20th
anniversary of stage appearances. She won a
Brit Award as a Newcomer at the start of the 90s.
Rise, When A Woman, Sunshine and Out of Reach
were hits that established her fame as a soul
singer. She was a guest at Zermatt Unplugged
in 2008 and seven years later will grace the
intimate setting of the Sunnegga Sessions. This
is the ideal setting for this soul queen with the
soft, inimitable voice.

This was the start of the success story of Sunset Sons.
They are making their way to Zermatt with their new
EP, The Fall Line, and the sun in their hearts, and will
certainly melt one heart or another.

Dino Mukanda Brandao alias Frank Powers will sich nicht in ein
Schema pressen lassen, er will mit seiner Musik frei sein. 2011
klemmte er sich die Ukulele unter den Arm und spielt seither
als Strassenmusiker oder mit Band auf Konzertbühnen. 2014
erschien sein Debütalbum Welcome At Frank's. Dino Mukanda
Brandao, alias Frank Powers, refuses to be pigeonholed. He
wants to be free with his music. In 2011 he packed his ukulele
under his arm and has played as both a street musician or
with a band on a concert stage since then. His début album,
Welcome at Frank's, appeared in 2014.

Unsere Empfehlung: Den Festivaltag mit der
Blue Lounge auf 2600 m beginnen und dann
in sanften Schwüngen zurück ins Dorf. Die
Blue Lounge kann auch als Nicht-Skifahrer

Talents sind die Gesichter unserer Kino-, TV- und
Radiospots. 2014 war es Alizé von der Band Aliose
aus der Westschweiz, 2015 sind es FROM KID, eine
der vielversprechendsten Nachwuchsbands, die
das Bündnerland seit Langem hervorgebracht hat.

am Zermatt Unplugged.
They are the ambassadors of our festival: young
Swiss bands adorn the Zermatt Unplugged
posters, mega-posters and advertisements. The
New Talents are the faces of our cinema, TV and
radio spots. It was Alizé from the band Aliose
from Western Switzerland in 2014. In 2015 it's
FROM KID, one of the most promising young bands
that Graubunden has been producing for some
years now. Their début album is You Can Have All
The Wonders and promises great things for their
appearance at Zermatt Unplugged.

of the Zermatt artist Heinz Julen is transformed
into the vibrant Rüsterei Pop Up Bar. Enjoy classic drinks and cocktail creations. Let DJs from
Berlin draw you into the world of Electro Swing
until well after midnight. Zermatt Unplugged and
the Rüsterei invite you to experience their blend
of design and nightlife. Entry with pin or daily
ticket.
Wer nach der Festivalzeit auch weiterhin diese
lebendige Atmosphäre geniessen möchte, sollte in
der Rüsterei in Zürich vorbeischauen. Jeden ersten
Mittwoch im Monat performen in der ehemaligen
Ausrüsterei, die 2007 von Julen zum Restaurant
umgestaltet wurde, unsere musikalischen Neuentdeckungen. Viele davon sind auch während des
Festivals auf unseren New Talent Stages zu sehen.
Anyone who wants to continue enjoying this
lively atmosphere after the festival should
certainly visit the Rüsterei in Zurich. Every first
Wednesday of the month, our latest musical discoveries perform in this former paper finishing
plant, which was converted into a restaurant by
Julen in 2007. Many of them can also be seen on
the New Talent Stages during the festival.
