Sprachaufenthalt in Brisbane (Australien, QLD)
4.Oktober - 8.Dezember 2001
Am Donnerstag, 4. Oktober um 13:35 startet mein Flugzeug Richtung Kuala Lumpur, wo ich
noch 12 Stunden Aufenthalt habe, bevor ich dann nach Brisbane weiterreisen kann. Ich bin
sehr gespannt, was mich in den nächsten neun Wochen in Australien erwarten wird. Ich
freue mich, wieder einmal etwas Neues zu sehen, mit 45 Jahren wieder Student zu sein,
neue Leute kennen zu lernen. Gespannt bin ich aber auch auf die Stadt Brisbane, auf die
Schule und auf meine Unterkunft.
Nach einer 22-stündigen Flugreise bringt mich ein Kleinbus zu meiner Gastfamilie. Sie
bewohnen ein gemütliches Haus in Bulimba, einem Aussenquartier Brisbanes. Die
Gastfamilie und eine weitere Studentin empfangen mich sehr freundlich und führen mich
gleich nach dem Zimmerbezug in die Umgebung ein. Während meines Aufenthaltes leben
vier Leute im Haus. Es braucht schon eine gewisse Umstellung und Flexibilität, um sich hier
durchzuschlagen. Besonders ungewohnt sind für mich das scharfe, asiatische Essen, mein
einfaches Zimmer mit Tisch, Stuhl, Schrank und Bett, die Wasch- und sonstigen HygieneGewohnheiten, sowie die üppigen, tropischen Pflanzen im und ums ganze Haus. Die
Mitbewohner sind allesamt sehr nett und zuvorkommend. Darüber bin ich sehr froh, denn
von allem Anfang an muss ich Englisch sprechen. Meine Mitstudentin, eine junge Japanerin
welche schon seit sechs Wochen in dieser Stadt lebt, zeigt mir die Schule und erleichtert mir
dadurch den Start.
Wie ich im Laufe meines Aufenthaltes herausfinden konnte, geniesst die Schule einen sehr
guten Ruf. Sie ist in altenglischem Stil gebaut und geführt. Es sind eine ganze Menge
Klassenräume mit der wichtigsten Infrastruktur erstellt worden. Am ersten Morgen muss ich,
zusammen mit etwa vierzig Neulingen, bereits einen Eintrittstest ablegen. Ich muss mich
enorm anstrengen und durchbeissen. Die Unterrichtszeiten sind täglich von 09.00 - 15.15
(inkl. 15 Min. Pause). Zudem gibt es jeden Tag Hausaufgaben. Die Lehrer unterrichten
methodisch sehr abwechslungsreich. Wir sprechen viel, führen Rollenspiele durch, besuchen
Museen und erledigen schriftliche Arbeiten. Die Schule ist wie eine grosse Familie; man
bietet viele kulturelle und sportliche Aktivitäten an, und die Schulleitung ist stets bemüht,
allen Studenten den Aufenthalt so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten.
Die Stadt Brisbane mit ihren rund 1'500'000 Einwohner hat mich voll in ihren Bann gezogen.
Geschichtlich, architektonisch und kulturell hat die Stadt am Brisbane-River einiges zu
bieten. Ganz besonders beeindruckt haben mich die Hochbauten, Glaspaläste rund um alte,
kleine Kapellen und Wohnhäusern sowie die City-Cats, das öffentliche Verkehrsmittel auf
dem Fluss.

Eine lange Reise

Fr, 5. Oktober 2215 Uhr, Weiterflug nach Brisbane
Sa, 6. Oktober 0725 Uhr, Ankunft in Brisbane und Bezug des Zimmers bei der Gastfamilie;
anschliessend erkunden der Stadt (selbstverständlich mit der City-Cat)
Bei der Abreise in Zürich war es recht angenehm warm. Meine Gedanken drehten sich nur
um den zu erwartenden, langen Flug und den unsicheren Transfer in Malaysia. Doch es ging
alles glatt und die beiden Flüge waren trotz ihrer Länge ganz angenehm.
Als ich nach einer kurzen Erkundungstour von der Stadt zurück kehrte, erwartete mich
ausser der Gastfamilie bereits der erste Besuch. Schon wieder ging es los mit dem Ringen
nach Wörtern. Santi, im 5. Monat schwanger, kochte uns am Abend einen Nudelauflauf mit
Kartoffelstock als Beilage. Nach dem gemeinsamen Essen ging ich dann total erledigt zu
Bett. Bett...???

bedeckt, feucht-warm bei 30°C
Brisbane:
bedeckt, windig, 27°C (bedingt durch meine Müdigkeit war mir trotzdem kalt)

Ein Wochenende wie zu Hause
Allgemein:
Wetter/Temp.: Nahezu wolkenlos, sehr heiss (36°C)
0830
Aufstehen, nach einer ersten, gut durchgeschlafenen Nacht.
- gemütliches Kaffeetrinken.
- Arbeiten mit Englisch-CD am Laptop.
- Erkunden der einladenden Oxfordstreet (viele, gemütliche Shops und
Restaurants).
- Ich finde sogar einen exzellenten Salat.
- Zurück, entlocke ich Ayako (meine Mitstudentin aus Osaka) einige Sätze über
sich und ihre Familie.
- Nach einer etwas ausgedehnten Siesta arbeite ich wieder am Laptop.
- Dann ein 1. Kontakt mit Santi's Reiskünsten.

Ein ganz normaler Schultag
Wetter/Temp.:
Das Wetter scheint hier das zu tun, was es bei uns im April macht. Auf und zu und
auf und zu und auf und zu ........, nur viel, viel wärmer (25-35°C)
Zur Schule / zum Unterricht:
Da mich der Eintrittstest am ersten Montagmorgen ins Level 4 ( von 6) katapultiert
hat, erwartet mich eine ziemlich anstrengende Zeit.
Den Morgen absolviere ich in der Klasse 4.4, den Nachmittag in der Klasse 4.10,
auch mit anderen Lehrkräften.
Am zweiten Tag bereits, wurde unsere Vormittags-Klasse aufgelöst (wer weiss
warum...?) und wir mussten uns bereits wieder an neue Studenten-Gesichter und
neue Lehrkräfte gewöhnen. Erfahrene Studenten an diesem College trösteten uns,
dies werde so weitergehen.....und es war so !!!
Tagesablauf:
0730 Tagwacht
0745 Kaffee (Kaffee ??)
0800 Marsch zur Station der City-Cat (öffentliches Verkehrsmittel)
0840 Eintreffen in der Schule (allgemeiner Schwatz an einem der Tische im Garten)
0900 Unterrichtsbeginn (manchmal sogar pünktlich)
1100 Pause von 15 Min.
1115 Weiterarbeit
1215 Mittagspause
1315 Weiterarbeit in der "Nachmittagsklasse"
1515 Schulschluss
oft beschliessen wir den Tag mit einem gemütlichen Stadtbummel oder einem
Barbecue in einem der wunderschönen Parkanlagen.
Schulstoff und Hausaufgaben:
Die Vormittage sind geprägt von viel Diskussion und Austausch von
Informationen über die verschiedenen Kulturen der Herkunftsländer. In den
Nachmittagsklassen beschäftigen wir uns vor allem mit Grammatik.
Wir bearbeiten jede Woche ein neues Kapitel und erhalten fast jeden Tag
Hausaufgaben in der Morgen- und in der Nachmittagsklasse.

A three-day Action Safari to Moreton Island
(from 26.-28.10.01)
Weather.:
Rain on Friday - 30°C, beautiful sunshine on Saturday and Sunday - 34°C, but
very high tropical humid in the rainforest.
First day (arriving):
We arrived on Moreton Island after a 2hour journey by ferry. We took our
baggage on a 4WD-car. After, we walked along the wonderful beach to the
camp. Our camp was among the rainforest. After arriving, we climbed a 450
feet sand dune. In the beginning, I climbed this dune in the front group,
halfway up, I needed a stick to go on. My friends gave me a new nickname.
They called me "Moses". After lunch, we explored the island. Of course, not
me, but the others. A friend and I enjoyed ourselves in a big tent, because it
was rainy very much. After dinner, the ranger explained about the environment
and the animals. There are a lot of poisonous animals on this Island. We had
to sign a form, to acknowledge all risks und to accept all instructions from the
ranger. Around 10pm we all tried to sleep, but not all of us were able to.

Second day:
After a very good breakfast of pancakes and coffee we drove across the
Island and visited the oldest Lighthouse in the world. On the road, the ranger
explained to us about the plants in the rainforest. And we also went to the
beach to try wave riding. A lot of dolphins accompanied us. Some Wales were
also playing in the sea. After this swim in the saltwater, we went to the "Blue
Lagoon", a wonderful Freshwater lake. We swam in this beautiful freshwater.
Some people got a "Fango-pack" from the bottom of the lake.

After lunch, we went "sand tobogganing". We climbed a high sand dune (the
ground was better then the other one). With a board of "Pavatex" (30 cm
width, 120cm long, 5mm thick), we lay head-first and we drove down the hill.
The speed was about 65 km/h. The better ones, tried to drive standing.
Compared to "Bobbing" in our winter, we had sand in our face and not snow.
We had sand in all our openings. After we cooled off in the sea. After dinner,
we enjoyed ourselves near the fire and we talked together.

last day:
We had a beautiful breakfast with scrambled eggs, pancakes and cereal.
The last activity on this safari was snorkelling around the wrecks near the
beach. We swam between a big swarm of fish, but there were not many
different kinds of fish. After lunch, we prepared our bags and then we walked
to the ferry. Our school-adventure was over.
I was very happy and impressed by this weekend. It was a beautiful,
endless, deserted beach and wildeness all around our camp with a lot of
different plants, animals and insects. It was my first time to eat accompanied
by kookaburras, the crying bird of Australia.

Weekend in Byron Bay 19.11.2001
On the road again. Last weekend, I went to Byron Bay, the town of the alternate
people or the lost 68's. On Friday, I started by bus at 1.45 pm. When we passed
Palm Beach, we suddenly heard a noise and the bus driver stopped the bus. First, I
didn't now what the problem was. I looked forward and saw the broken windscreen,
that because some children threw a water balloon at the coach. We tried to catch the
boys but without success. After that, we had two hours to wait for a substitute bus. In
the meantime the police took a report. We arrived Byron Bay in the evening at 9.00
pm. I found an accommodation in a backpackers hostel. That was a new challenge,
because it was very dirty. On Saturday morning, I went early to find another motel.
The tourist information helped me to find a clean, comfortable and orderly motel in
contrast to the backpackers hostel. After that, I walked along the beach to the
lighthouse. On the way, I passed the most easterly point of Australia. In the evening, I
enjoyed me being in a Irish Pub with live music. On all the corners and in the most of
the pubs there were a lot of "Bob Marleys" they played some instruments or sang any
songs from the 60's. On Sunday, I went shopping and after I took a sunbath on the
beach. In my opinion, the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. In the afternoon, I left
for Brisbane, because the weekday goes on. Seven lessons English class the day is
a really a hard experience for me. But….. next weekend ??

Weekend in Noosa 26.11.2001
The last time on the road with my schoolmates from Shafston.
Last weekend, we went to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. The travel agency at our
school arranged a big apartment on the Sunrise Beach. It had two bedrooms, two
bathrooms, two toilets, a kitchen, a living room, a veranda and in front a swimming
pool. And all this for only 120 dollars the night, shared by 5 people. On Fridayafternoon, we explored Noosa's shops and restaurants and looked for a good dinner
place. After a fantastic meal, we started the night entertainment . In the Surf Club we
found a very good live music band for dancing. At midnight, we returned to our
apartment. On Saturday, early in the morning, we ordered a taxi for Eumundi. There
was a big market in town. When I saw drums to sale , I began to play the drums. In a
short time, the sales man seated by my side and we played together some different
rhythms. We gave a little show and many people watched us. In the afternoon, we
enjoyed our own beach. We could swim, wave riding and sunbathing. At night, we
repeated the same as last night. On Sunday morning, we locked up our baggage in a
locker system, because we had to leave our accommodation. Unfortunately, we put
our baggage in the wrong locker, so we couldn't unlock our case. I must call the
police, who helped us very helpful and friendly but first they laughed at our mistake.
After this experience we walked trough the National park, where we saw koala's and
big lizards. This is probably my last weekend I will spend with my school friends from
Shafston. It was a good, lovely, sunny and funny weekend.
