Seit fast 150 Jahren ein Begriff: Wer im
Grand Hotel National residiert, spürt überall
den Atem einer versunkenen, glanzvollen
Epoche. Seit der Eröffnung im Jahr 1870
besticht die Fassade an der Seepromenade
durch den fürstlichen Baustil des Neubarocks und der Neurenaissance. Verbunden mit der Wasserspiegelung entstehen
prächtige Bilder, von denen jeder Gast noch
lange träumt.
For almost 150 years, anyone who has stayed
in the Grand Hotel National has felt the breath
of a dazzling era that has all but disappeared.
Since the hotel opened its doors in 1870,
visitors have been captivated by the princely,
new baroque and neo-renaissance architecture of the frontage overlooking the lakeside
promenade. The hotel’s reflection merges with
the iridescent play of colours on the water’s
surface to leave a lasting impression on every
guest.
Der neue Hotelpalast gilt von Anfang
an als Zierde Luzerns und entsteht im
richtigen Moment: Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts
kommt der Tourismus auf und die Leuchtenstadt wird zur attraktiven Reisedestination,
insbesondere für die französische Noblesse,
die russische Aristokratie und die britische
Oberschicht.
From the very outset, the new hotel was
a jewel in Lucerne’s crown and came into
being at precisely the right moment. The
mid-19th century saw the emergence of the
tourist industry and the city of lights became
an attractive travel destination, in particular
for the French nobility, the Russian aristocracy
and the British upper class.

mehr, als er von zu Hause gewohnt ist; und
so schaffen Bauherren und Grossmeister
eine exklusive, diskrete Welt, einen Mikrokosmos des Luxus.
However, this urban clientele brought with it
a sudden increase in the demands made of the
hotel sector. These keen travellers expected
far more than they were used to at home,
which resulted in building owners and master
craftsmen creating an exclusive and discreet
world - a microcosm of luxury.
Von 1870 an leitet der Bauherr Oberst
Maximilian Von Pfyffer von Altishofen das
Grand Hotel National als Direktor. Auf einem
Schloss aufgewachsen, weiss der renommierte Befehlshaber, was er seinen
distinguierten Gästen schuldig ist.
The building owner, Colonel Maximilian Von
Pfyffer von Altishofen, managed the Grand
Hotel National from 1870 onwards. Having
grown up in a castle, the renowned military
commander was fully aware of what he owed
his distinguished guests.
Sieben Jahre später übernimmt César
Ritz die Führung des Hauses. Er legt hier
den Grundstein für traditionelle und stilvolle
Hotelkultur. Der begabte Walliser aus
Niederwald im Goms betreibt später auch
das erste «Hotel Ritz» in Paris mit triumphalem Erfolg. Vom Prince of Wales, dem späteren britischen König Edward VII, als «König
der Hoteliers» geehrt, pflegt der Grandseigneur des guten Stils in Luzern eine elegante,
formvollendete Hotelkultur, die noch heute
als Vorbild dient.
Seven years later, César Ritz took over
the management of the hotel, laying the foundations of traditional and stylish hotel culture.
Hailing from Niederwald im Goms, this gifted
native of the canton of Valais would later make
the first “Hotel Ritz“ in Paris a triumphant
success. Honoured by the Prince of Wales, the
future King Edward VII of Britain, as the “king
of hoteliers“, the sovereign of style laid one of
the most important cornerstones of perfectly
elegant hotel culture here in Lucerne which
still serves as a model today.
1881 bereichert ein weiterer Meister
die Garde des Grand Hotel National. Der
französische Starkoch Auguste Escoffier
verwöhnt nun mit Hingabe die heiklen
Gaumen der Aristokratie − von Häuptern des
deutschen Kaiserhauses bis hin zu indischen
Maharadjas; unter ihnen auch Sissy, Kaiserin
Elisabeth von Österreich.
In 1881, another master joined the ranks of
the Grand Hotel National. The great French
chef Auguste Escoffier devotedly indulged the
delicate palates of the aristocracy − from the
heads of the imperial German family to Indian
maharajas and including Sissy, Empress
Elisabeth of Austria.
Als Sahnehäubchen setzt er den Gästen
regelmässig eine Auswahl seiner weltberühmten, selbstkreierten Gerichte wie etwa
flambierter Hummer, Geflügel à la Derby
oder Birne Helene vor.
To their great pleasure, he often regaled
guests with a selection of his very own
world-famous dishes such as flambéed
lobster, chicken à la Derby and poire belle
Hélène.
«Die Perfektion des Handwerks muss mit
Einfachheit gepaart werden»: Das ist die
revolutionäre Devise der beiden TopGastronomen. Für César Ritz heisst es weg
mit bombastischen Vorhängen, weg mit
komplizierten Begrüssungsfloskeln - lichte
Farben, Blumenschmuck und aufmerksamer,
persönlicher Service, der Gäste «zu Freunden des Hauses» werden lässt.
“The perfection of the craft must be paired
with simplicity“: that was the revolutionary
motto of these two leading restaurateurs.
For César Ritz, this meant dispensing with
the bombastic draperies and overblown
greetings which were replaced by light
colours, flowers and attentive personalised
service making guests feel like “friends of
the hotel“.
Fast ein Jahrhundert später, 1976, erwirbt
der Architekt Umberto Erculiani das
Grand Hotel National. Er renoviert den Hotelpalast im Laufe der Jahre umfassend und
mit viel Liebe zum Detail. Dabei
entstehen unter anderem 22 exklusive
Residenzen im Westflügel des Hauses für
permanente Gäste.
In 1976, almost one hundred years later,
the architect Umberto Erculiani acquired
the Grand Hotel National. He completely
renovated the luxury palace throughout the
year, paying great attention to detail. Among
other new developments, he created
22 exclusive residences in the west wing of
the hotel intended for permanent guests.
Heute präsentiert sich das
Grand Hotel National als luxuriöses,
modernes 5 Sterne Hotel mit 41 Gästezimmern und Suiten. Darüber hinaus
beherbergt das Haus 22 Residenzen,
modernste Büroflächen, 6 Gastronomiebetriebe, 2 Ballsäle, Konferenzräume sowie
eine Pool-Etage mit Sauna. Neue, weltoffene
Gäste beleben die grandiose Kulisse und
bringen frische Grandezza ins Haus.
Today, the Grand Hotel National is a
modern, luxury 5-star hotel with 41
roomsand suites. The hotel also houses
22 residences, ultra-modern offices,
6 restaurants, 2 ballrooms, conference
rooms and a pool floor with sauna.
