Martin Hess
E-Bass, Doublebass
Born in Basel.
Study of the Electric- and the Doublebass at the Jazz School Basel, the Bass Institute Munich as well as with
Karsten Gorzel in Freiburg.
Some highlights of the last Years:
· 1992 Tour through Russia, Estonia and Lituenia as a member of the Rainer Pusch Trio.
· 1994 - 95 Musical Production Grease in the "Haebse-Theater" Basel.
· 1995 played with the Rainer Pusch Trio. Rainer Pusch; sax, John Betch; drums, in Paris.
· 1995 - 96 Swiss Tour with the Salsaband of the female Cuban singer Mayra Leon.
· 1996 Bass player in the tap-dancer Sebastian Weber´s band Tapshot. Played at the Jazz Festival Minden (D)
and the International Dance Festival in Augsburg (D), where he belonged to the Festivalband and accompanied
all shows of the one-week event.
· 1996 Concerts in the South German Area with the modern Jazz Bands "Bopmania" and the "Tangente
Specialband."
· 1996 performed with Pete York in Duisburg.
· 1997 Concert with radio liverecording as Electricbass soloist at the Swiss "Tonhallen" Orchestra Zurich
(Composition "Time shapes" of the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina).
· 1997 - 98 extended Tours in Germany and Switzerland with the Formation "Amusette" (musette waltzes of the
30er years) with Karmen Hey on the Accordeon and the guitar player Meggi Patay. Appearance for the TV
station "Arte" in Hamburg.
· 1998 - 2000 with the well known Guitarist Meggi Patay he travels Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland
(duo, trio and quartet).
· 1999 Tour with the Black Forest Jazzband to the Northsea Island Borkum.
· 1999 - 2000 Member of the Group Alania (Greek folkmusic).
· 2000 performed Music from the Dominician Republic with the Bands "Ritmo Candente" and "Wil Vargas I
Projecto Dos" in Germany and Switzerland.
Duoconcert with the american Musician Gary White on the Festival in Verona (I)
· 2000 - 01 travel with the "Albert Louis Jazzband" to France, Switzerland, South Italy and to Martinique
(Caribbean).
· 2001 Concert trip with the "Freiburg Jazz Choir" to Oldenburg (Chamber Music Festival), Bremen and Worms
(Jazzfestival).
· 2002 travel with the "Albert Louis Jazzband" to South of France and Greece.
· 2003 with "Albert Louis Jazzband" to Djerba (Tunisia), Corsica and Portugal.
· 2004 Djerba (Tunisia), South of France, Agadir (Morocco) and Luxor (Egypt).
· 2005 with "Albert Louis" to Corsica and Portugal.
The CD "First Intuition" with Fabio Freire and Ignis Quartet gets an Award in Brazil.
· 2006 with "Albert Louis" to Kemer (Turkey), Djerba (Tunisia) and Gregolimano (Greece)
Played the Jazzfestival Birstonas (Lituenia) as a member of the Rainer Pusch Trio.
· 2007 with "Albert Louis" to France and Martinique.
Benefizconcert with Ewa Bem, Leszek Zadlo, Marcin Grochowina, Alek Bem and others in Freiburg.
With "Dr Wim´s JazzAffair" on the New Orleans Jazzfestival in Ascona (CH)
Present member with the brasilian Musician and Composer "Fabio Freire and Ignis quartet", Joachim Storl´s
group "Storl and Friends", the Souljazz Formation "Souleyes", "Dr Wim´s Jazzaffair", "Ladwigs Jatzkapelle",
and the "Afro Cuban City Bigband".
Martin Hess worked in the last Years for a good Reputation as freelance Bassplayer, among other things with
Formations like the "Constellation Bigband", the "Contemporary Bigband Project" of Stefan Merkl, the Group
"Oldies but Goldies" of Simon Holliday, the Jazz Choir Loerrach as well as the Music schoolbigbands from
Neustadt (trip to Dijon) and Triberg (trip to St. Tropez). He could collect also experiences on that occasion as a
Bigbandleader.
Work as a Studiomusician for Studios like Blackwood Studio Basel, Calren Studios near Freiburg and others.
Since several years teacher for E-Bass and Doublebass at the music schools Hochschwarzwald, St. Georgen and
Triberg.
