Kingfisher Sept. Oct., Nov. 2014
FALL 2014 THE September · October · November Kingfisher a publication of the Chattahoochee Nature Center T h e G r e a t O u t d o o r s — I t ’s F o r E v e r y o n e ! Behind the scenes - that is where some of the most interesting stories lie. CNC has been a platform for stories that arise from staff, volunteers, and members. Learn a little about how CNC has helped people restore, rethink, conserve, and enjoy their natural world. Terri Lyde I live in Atlanta which is where I was born and raised. Bob Craton I am originally from Marietta and lived near seven different airbases around the country while growing up. I now live in Woodstock. Connection to CNC: I found out about the Nature Center while looking to take a wilderness first aid class there. I learned that CNC had a volunteer docent program and I immediately filled out an application. Connection to CNC: I am a docent, and have been associated with CNC since I first started bringing my daughters in 1978. How Do You Connect Others to Nature: Since becoming an exhibit docent, I have started leading outdoor field trips for kids with the Sierra club (camping, hiking, etc), leading week long bicycling trips, and leading other hiking and camping trips for adults outside. I enjoy being a source of inspiration and information for the kids and anyone else who wants to learn. CNC has helped provide me with the knowledge to do this. I really enjoy talking about beavers whenever I, or someone else, spots a beaver dam and I love pulling out my plastic snake guide when we see snakes on hikes. Terri Wants You to Know: I really feel like I am making a difference when I can keep someone from beating a snake to death with a stick and get them to actually have compassion for it and see it as a thing of beauty. I plan to one day expand my knowledge of plants and trees enough to feel comfortable leading hikes at CNC, but for now, learning more and more about the animals keeps me busy. Favorite Outdoor Activity: CNC gives me the opportunity to connect to nature and outdoors by giving me the chance to get outside and interact with people, especially children. Bob Wants You to Know: My favorite role is as a docent in the Watershed Gallery in the Discovery Center while school groups are visiting. I also help as a docent on the Wildlife Walk and spent a lot of time volunteering this summer in our Butterfly Encounter outdoor exhibit. I have used these experiences with my grandsons and their friends to help get them interested and excited about nature and animals. I hope they will remember a few facts too. Fall Native Plant Sale Fall Native Plant Sale more profiles on pages 2 and 3 Exclusive Members Only Sale - Thursday, Sept. 25 (4 - 7 pm) Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 27 (10 am - 5 pm) Fall is the best time to get your trees and shrubs into the ground! Ludi, M.D. Jon McKee Kathleen McNicholas Randy Patterson Sally Riker Nelson Sexton Jay Sutton Lou Tabickman Kathi Wurzel Keith Ziobron C. Max Zygmont Connection to CNC: CNC connects me to those wonderful childhood memories by providing serene walks through the forest and wetlands and along the river. I experience the amazing diversity of native trees and plants, the excitement of seeing wildlife in their natural habitats from an osprey flying over the river with a freshly caught fish clutched in its talons, to butterflies in a rainbow of colors busily pollinating plants, to the ever changing lay of the land as seasons change. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Anything related to being in or around water: swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, as well as hiking and camping along rivers, lakes and beaches. How Do You Connect Others to Nature: Observing and participating in the natural world reminds me that I am part of an interconnected community my choices touch others; I feel that moving with the rhythms and seasons of life elicits much joy, vitality and wisdom. CNC Senior Staff Executive Director Chris Nelson Community Programs Rebecca Gilbert Community Relations/Marketing Lynn McIntyre Development DeAnn Fordham Linda Wants You to Know: It truly takes a village of passionate, committed, knowledgeable staff and volunteers to provide a great outdoor nature experience at CNC – from the wildlife rehabilitation clinic staff, to docents /volunteers, and the environmental educators who form a diverse team that contribute to our members’ and visitors’ nature experience. CNC cares for permanently disabled, non-releasable eagles, hawks, owls, opossums, beaver, snakes, gopher tortoises and turtles. They are truly ambassadors, and it is inspiring to see how they impact people’s hearts and call them to experience nature at a deeper level and to become personally involved in caring for it. Rick Hendricks Originally from Milton and I live in Roswell. Education Tom Howick Finance Karen Ewing Connection to CNC: As a child, I attended summer camp at Camp Chattahoochee, formerly located on the current CNC property. I have lived just three miles down the highway for 27 years. Paula Herr, Editor/Designer for The Kingfisher How Do You Connect Others to Nature: I chose the resident Bald Eagles for my photo-study over the last year. I post selected images from the grounds onto the CNC Facebook page with comments, and enjoy those posted there by other visitors! Rick Wants You to Know: A measure of the success of the CNC and partners in improving the river corridor environment was revealed to me in an interesting way. A family of three wild Black Vultures began to fly in and frequently visit the resident vultures. Next, on five occasions, I saw the same wild hawk fly in to visit the resident Red-shouldered Hawks. A pair of Red-tailed hawks seems now to live permanently on the property. Most significantly, wild bald eagles on the river hear the resident eagles calling, and occasionally drop in to visit them; five of which I have photographed myself. The fact that the Chattahoochee can now support growing numbers of wild bald eagles, unheard of just a few years ago, is very encouraging. I trust that this will encourage others to become motivated to contribute to and educate their friends about the fact that together we can make a significant difference , and can become better stewards of the important part which we too play in the ecosystem! Connecting to Our Natural World Holly Henson I live in Midtown Atlanta and I’ve lived here for 20 years minus a couple of years in London mixed in. Connection to CNC: CNC has connected me to nature in many ways. My family and I have enjoyed many wonderful activities at the CNC, from night hiking to the butterfly festival to simply enjoying day hikes and the aviaries. We have visited many times and our appreciation of nature has depend with each visit. I particularly enjoy seeing the impact that the CNC has had on my children’s growing love of nature. d e t h g i the S on Favorite Outdoor Activity: My favorite outdoor activity is birding! But I also love gardening and hiking. Holly Wants You to Know: The CNC has fostered my continued interest in birds of all kinds. While I certainly enjoy getting up early to “go birding” somewhere, I am pretty much always birding... from my window, in my garden, from my car... basically from anywhere I happen to be at the moment. I take photos everywhere I go and create oil paintings of birds, which I share with anyone who will look! My children have developed their own interest as well, and can identify many different kinds of birds. We often listen to recordings of bird calls together to help train our ears. Additionally, as I’ve learned to be a better steward of the environment, I’m always sharing what I’ve learned with friends and neighbors... tips for attracting birds and other wildlife, caring for pollinators, and gardening organically. I am grateful to the CNC for fostering my curiosity in the natural world, and for the work the Nature Center does to save what is precious here! Michelle Vincent I live in Roswell, and have lived here since I moved from Michigan in 2002. American Beautyberry in fruit Broad-winged Hawks migrating to Central and South America Connection to CNC: We love the setting of the nature center, and the access to the river, and the rocks and trails, but especially we love the programming - We’re regulars at Earth Day kids fest, water play day, anytime Dave Holland or the birds of prey are in town, and we’ve had one or both kids in Pee-wee Naturalists almost every time it’s happened. We’re going to miss it now that our youngest starts pre-K in the fall. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Probably bird watching, but swimming or ambling through the woods are close behind.. Michelle Wants You to Know: I came to Georgia in 2002 to work for the State in Environmental Protection, working on water quality grants. At that time, CNC looked very different than it does now. Today, I work for a consulting firm as an environmental scientist that focuses primarily on water - water planning, policy, permitting, especially on stormwater. Environmental, science and watershed-based education are enormously important to me, and are one of my top-priority for my kids, and to help support in our community. I think CNC is an exemplary example of what we can strive for in water and science programming, and I am looking forward to seeing where the next 15 years takes us. One of my long-term plans is to get all of our kids friends to come to camp at CNC. I just wish there was a camp for grown ups. It was a beautiful afternoon to be on the Chattahoochee River which is the Creek word for “river of painted rocks”. As we left the shoreline, our canoes slid quietly out onto the water and you could immediately feel the drop in temperature. On this hot summer afternoon, the supercooled water released from the bottom of the 130 foot dam at Lake Lanier flowed south into the Metro Atlanta area — intersecting the amazing rock formation of the Brevard Fault Zone —at a chilly 50F degrees. That low temperature creates a unique environment that allows large numbers of brown and rainbow trout to thrive. It also gives the ‘Hooch the special designation as one of the southernmost trout rivers in the United States. It’s the only one that flows through a major metropolitan city. Trout, of course, are only one of the many things that make our river special. Currently the river supplies 70 percent of Atlanta’s drinking water with residents and business professionals gulping down a thirsty 450 million gallons in a single day. What makes these numbers stand out even more is the fact that the total watershed serving nearly 3.5 million residents is the smallest nationally that serves a major metropolitan area. As the Metro Atlanta area continues to grow, water and water quality will be one of the region’s most critical issues. How well that resource is managed now will determine the quality of life, development and growth available for our children today and the next generation. The Chattahoochee Nature Center is located within the 48 mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area that consists of 10,000 plus acres and hosts over 3.5 million visitors per year. The recreation-value alone generates revenues exceeding that of the Atlanta Braves. 23 species of fish, hundreds of species of native plants, insects, and shellfish, 240 species of birds including bald eagles, and mammals, such as otter, beaver, fox and deer greet our guests. A visitor from NYC recently tagged the river the “Central Park of Atlanta”. And on Staff Day, while we paddled down our “Central Park of Atlanta”, we cruised along a beautiful stretch of wetlands near Gold Branch. Henning Von Schmeling, CNC’s Senior Director of Operations, pointed out a heron that was perfectly camouflaged in the trees. He also picked out birds just by their songs and calls. It illustrated perfectly how the area is teeming with life! It was easy to imagine myself in some remote wilderness rather than being just a few miles from downtown Atlanta. I hope you will come out soon and take an expertly guided river canoe adventure with one of our naturalists. You will learn so many things about this valuable waterway you didn’t know before. You will also return from that adventure with a much better understanding of what the river represents to our future. NEW!
