Oh my country !
A seaside town anchored between the hills and the beaches
Bathed by the sun and the salty air, this is my village
On the ground where the thyme, dill and rosemary grows,
Its vineyards and its valleys produce the best wine,
Red, white or rosé.All divine nectars,
Which we drink joyfully on our terraces,
While the masts of the port sway so gently,
Seeming to ripple in the nautical air,
Bandol, oh my country, you respresent Provence so well !
Land without worries, you are the mother of my childhood !
When sweet and hot, come the first days of summer
And our cicadas on the pine trees sing with ease,
Our hearts fill up with gaiety and happiness
We wouldn't want to be anywhere else
Its walking trails, its port, its markets, its restaurants,
Invite us to live serenely, to take our time.
Its creeks, its beaches, call us everywhere
To come and rest ourselves, even if just for a short moment.
Every day, when I come into the heart of this city,
By its small streets, its squares and its gardens,
It's a treasure of images and beauties that it gives me,
Everytime I say to myself, it's within that it's good to live.

Badeort zwischen Hügeln und Strand,
Gebadet von Sonne und frischer Seeluft,
dies ist meine Heimatstadt
Auf dem Land, wo Thymian,
Dill und Rosmarin wachsen,
Lassen seine Rebenhügel den besten Wein fließen.
Rot,Weiß oder Rosé... Alles göttlicher Nektar,
Den wir fröhlich auf unseren Terrassen trinken,
Während die Schiffsmasten im Hafen hin und her schaukeln
Sich anscheinend fröhlich im Meereswind wiegen.
Bandol, oh mein Heimatland, du duftest so gut nach Provence !
Sorgenfreies Land du bist die Mutter meiner Kindheit !
Wenn köstlich und warm die ersten Sommertage kommen
Wenn die Grillen in den Pinien zirpen
Füllen sich unsere Herzen mit Heiterkeit und Glück.
Um nichts in aller Welt möchten wir anderswo sein.
Seine Promenaden, sein Kai, seine Märkte, seine Restaurants
Bieten uns ein angenehmes Leben, laden uns ein sich Zeit zu nehmen.
Seine Buchten, seine Strände rufen uns zum Ausruhen
Und sei es nur ein kurzer Augenblick.
Jeden Tag wenn ich seine Gässchen, seine Terrassen, seine Plätze und Gärten
besuche,vermitteln sie mir einen Schatz von Bildern und Schönheit.

Bandol’s History... Es war einmal...
Once upon a time…
Bandol, whose name comes from Bendorium :
the edge of the town of Tauroentum,was occupied
by the Romans.Their empire extended throughout
Provence with the victory of Sextius Calvinus
over “ligures” in the year 124.
King Henri IV donated the territory of Bandol,
including the Islands of Bendor and Rousse, to
Antoine de Boyer. The First Lord of Bandol has
his castle built with a fort situated on the “éperon
de la butte” (currently the Castle residence).
On 12 August 1715, the territory of Bandol was
separated,and that of Le Cadiere was made official.
In a first act on 14 August 1715, Lord François de
Boyer de Foresta promised a house to live in and
lands to cultivate to any individual who wanted
to settle in the Bandol area and in his territory’ with certain conditions.
These acts market to birth of the community of
Bando, 120 years after Henry IV had given the
fort of Bandol to Lord Antoine de Boyer as a
stronghold, to him and his descendants.
The church was built in 1746 under the name
and title of François de Sales by the law of 5 June
1751. During that same year, Lord Ange de Boyer
de Foresta gave “armes and sceau” to Bandol, the
background of which are the “sinople” a golden
star, surrounded by the inscription. DUX ET
NAVIGANTUM SECURITAS.
On 22 July, the last act of the Lord was passed
with the sale of assets and lands of the lord to
the town of Bandol.The ressources of the town
were very varied and included the fishing industry,
the cultivation of wheat and vegetables, the wine
and olive plantations, the foral industry and the
cooperage industry.
Bandol intensified its wine production (the wines
of Bandol are classified AOC) whose world-wide
reputation is ever increasing.
In the 19th century, thanks to the new coastal
railway, the first sun-seekers arrived at Bandol.
Classified as a Seaside Resort on 3 July 1923, the
town knew how to develop a quality tourist business
thanks to its extraordinary brightness,its moderate
climate, the protection of the natural sites. Since
that moment,the BAy of Bandol has become one
of the most beautiful on the Cote d’Azur.
These first tourists, including such names as
Thomas Mann, Catherine Manfield, Aldous
Huxley,The lumiere brothers and Marcel Pagnol,
spread the name of Bandol all over the world.
The French stars Mistinguett, Raimu, Fernandel
and Henri Salvador confirmed the town’s
fashionable reputation… wich still lives on today !!
Es war einmal…
Bandol, dessen Name von Bedorium stammen
soll, äußerstes Ende der Stadt Tauroentum,
war von den Römern besetzt, deren Reich
sich über die gesamte Provence erstreckte.
Im Jahre 124 besiegte Sextius Calvinus die
Liguren.König Henri IV vermachte Antoine
de Boyer das Hoheitsgebiet Bandol mit seinen
Inseln Bendor und Rousse. Dieser erste
Gutsherr von Bandol baute 1610 sein Schloss
mit einer Festung auf dem “Epéron de la
butte” (heute Schlossresidenz).
Am 12. August 1715 Trennung des
Hohheitsgebietes Bandol und offizielle
Anerkennung von La Cadière.Am 14.August
1715 “verspricht“ der Gutsherr François de
Boyer de Foresta allen denjenigen, die sich in
Bandol und Umgebung installieren wollen,
Bleiben und zu kultivierendes Land – zu
bestimmten Bedingungen.
Diese Handlungen prägen den Anfang der
Gemeinschaft von Bandol, 120 Jahre nachdem
Henri IV sein Herrschaftsgebiet an Antoine
de Boyer und seine Nachkommen vermachte.
Die 1746 errichtete Kirche wurde am 5. Juni
1751 als Pfarrstelle unter dem Namen Saint
François de Sales eingerichtet.Im selben Jahr
gab François de Boyer Bandol sein Wappen
auf dessen blauem Hintergrund ein goldener
Stern dargestellt ist umgeben von der Devise
“DUX ET NAVIGANTUM SECURITAS“
Am 22.Juli 1795 fand die letzte herrschaftliche
Handlung statt : der Gutsherrn übergab die
Güter und Herrschaftsländer an die Stadt
Bandol. Die Einkommen der Stadt waren vielfältig : Fischfang, Getreide und
Gemüseanbau, Wein und Olivenplantagen,
Blumenhandel und Fassherstellung. Bandol
gelang es seine Weinproduktion zu intensivieren
(Bandoler Weine haben die Auszeichnung
A.O.C.) und der weltberühmte Ruf steigt von
Jahr zu Jahr.
Im 19. Jahrhundert kamen die ersten
Sonnenanbeter dank seiner neuen
Küstenbahnlinie in Bandol an.
Bandol wusste seine Anerkennung am 13.Juli
1923 als Kurort zu nutzen und entwickelte
dank seiner außerordentlichen Lichtstärke,
seines Microklimas und
seines
Naturschutzes einen Tourismus von hoher
Qualität.
Die Bucht von Bandol ist eine der schönsten
der Côte d’Azur.Die ersten Touristen hießen
Thomas Mann, Cathérine Mansfield, Aldous
Huxley, die “Frères Lumières“, Marcel
Pagnol... Sie machten Bandol in der ganzen
Welt berühmt. Andere wie Mistinguett,
Raimu,Fernandel und Henry Salvador bezogen
hier ihr Feriendomizil. Noch heute ist Bandol
ein das ganze Jahr über begehrtes Ferienziel.

Ans streching out between the sunfilled garrigue and the pinewoods, on terraces known
in Provence as “restanques”, are the famous
vineyards of Bandol.

There are some 50 wines growing domains in
the Bandol wine region, which was among the
first regions to obtain the coveted quality
label A.O.C. (Appellation
d’Origine
Contrôlée) in 1941. We recommend that you
follow the wine route and visit a wine-growing domain.You’ll have a chance to taste the
famous Bandol wines (red, rosé and white).
Because the vineyards are generally facing
south, the grapes are exposed to the sun for
up to 3000 hours every year. Because the soil
is very fertile, the Bandol wine-growers were
able to acclimate the high quality
“Mourvèdre” vine. This vine produces wines
which age particularly well, and this contributes to the excellent reputation of the winegrowers of the Bandol region.
Das Weinbaugebiet BANDOL umfasst ungefähr
50 Weingüter und war eines der ersten die
1941 das Gütesiegel A.O.C. erhielten. Ein
Ausflug entlang der „Bandoler Weinstraße“ ist
unbedingt zu empfehlen. Nicht zu vergessen in
einem der zahlreichen Güter eine Weinprobe
einzunehmen. Die außergewöhnliche Südlage
spendet den Rebenflächen 3000 Stunden
Sonne pro Jahr.Bandol kann dank dieser vorzüglichen Lage den seltenen “Mourvèdre“
anbauen. Diese Rebe erzeugt einen Wein
exzellenter Qualität und gestattet den
Winzern ihre Produktion auf den Rang der
besten Weine Frankreichs zu erheben.

Mediterranean hillsides, Bandol is one of the
largest and oldest sea resorts on the French
Riviera. Many sandy beaches border the bay Lido beach to the East, Casino beach to the
South and Rènecros beach, curving its way
around a delightful cove. During your stay,
don’t miss the voluptuous calm and beauty of
Bandol’s many “calanques” or rocky inlets
which can be admired all along the coastal
footpaths. Easy to reach by boat, these natural
creeks make for a very pleasurable boat trip
and are a paradise for swimmers.

edge is ten centimetres under the sea.

Golfes, zwischen den mit Ginster, Pinien und
Maulbeerbäumen überladenen Hügeln, ist Bandol
einer der größten und ältesten Badeortes der
Küste. Zahlreiche Sandstrände säumen die Bucht
von Bandol. Plage du Lido, Plage du Casino im
Süden, Plage de Rènecros, angenehm in der
berühmten kleinen Bucht gelegen.Aber verlassen
Sie Bandol nicht ohne die Ruhe und die
Schönheit der verschiedenen Felsenbuchten zu
genießen, die Sie all entlang des Küstenweges
bewundern können. Die auch per Schiff zu erreichenden natürlichen Felsbuchten gestatten einen
Schiffsausflug ins Paradies der Meeresliebhaber.

Dieser kleine Strand, der wie ein mit dem
Meer verbundenes Becken aussieht, ist
heute fast ganz überflutet.Die Legende
erzählt, dass die Schlossherrin hier gebadet
haben soll.Das Becken scheint sehr alt zu
sein, denn sein Rand befindet sich ca. 10cm
unter dem Wasserspiegel.

Known as a shelter for sailors throughout
the ages, Bandol offers excellent conditions
for yachts. Its deep waters allow access to
boats with large draft. In the 18th century,
the Port of Bandol provided a natural and
sure shelter, protected by a nine meter-high
breakwater. Its main activities were the
export of olives, olive oil and wines from
the inland Provencal vineyards, and tuna
fishing. From the end of the 19th century,
boats of up to 200 tons could be moored.
Today, the port welcomes over 1600 boats
of all tonnages, large yachts, trawlers, tuna
boats and pleasure boats of all types. Bandol
is not one of those artificial ports built in a
fever of speculation. It is a sure berth, created by the experience of sailors and developed through the sheer hard work of man.
Schon in der Antike war bekannt, dass der
Hafen von Bandol ausgezeichneten Schutz
für alle Segler bietet. Seine Wassertiefe
erlaubt auch Yachten mit tiefem Schiffsgang
im Hafen anzulegen. Im 18. Jahrhundert war
Bandol eine natürliche und sichere Zuflucht,
durch seine 9 Meter hohe Mole
geschützt.Die hauptsächliche Beschäftigung
war der Export von Oliven, Öl und Wein
aus der Produktion des Hinterlandes und
der Thunfisch Fang vom hohen Meer.Seit
Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts können Schiffe
bis 200 Tonnen anlegen. Heute werden
mehr als 1600 Schiffe aller Kategorien
willkommen geheißen. Segel und
Motoryachten, Fischdampfer,Thunfischfänger
und Vergnügung Schiffe.Bandol ist und bleibt
ein sicherer Liegeplatz, von erfahrenen
Seemännern geschaffen und durch harte
Arbeit vergrößert.

Bandol is located midway between Toulon, the Sainte Baume mountain range and Cassis,
where numerous equipped sites offer climbing paths to amateurs of any level. Some well-known
sites are Gros Cerveau, Cimaï, Baou de Quatre Ouro, Sormiou, Les Béguines, Pic de
Bartagne, Les Gorges du Destel, Le Coudon, Le Faron, but there are so many others.
The brochures for climbing in the Var are avaible at the Regional Center and website : climbing
around Toulon,Vallon Sourn, Correns, in the Verdon,Aiguines, Châteaudouble gorges, climbing
in the Massif de l’Esterel (Gorges du Blavet…).

• LES ILES RICARD - ÎLE DE BENDOR
In front of Bandol ; the crossing takes 7 minutes. The property of the industrialist Paul
Ricard since 1950, this island is an attractive tourist center. During summer : the
Universal Exhibition of Wine (in a large hall decorated with frescoes, this curious exhibition
covers the production of wine from 51 different countries. 8000 bottles are on display) : exhibition about the creation of this island and the life of Paul Ricard is displayed. Footpaths around the
island ; arts and craft shops ; hotels and restaurants.
• ÎLE DES EMBIEZ
Direction Sanary, then Le Brusc at 13 km (8 miles).
High frequency of ferries ; crossing takes 10 minutes.The property of the industrialist Paul Ricard.
To visit : The Oceanographic institute Paul Ricard (built in 1966 ; 27 seawater aquariums
provide a natural environment for some hundred species of Mediterranean aquatic animals) ; the
museum Paul Ricard (paintings from the industrialist depict his own family) ; numerous footpaths ;
the village with the chapel Sainte-Cécile and the harbour.
• LA CADIERE D’AZUR
Direction St-Cyr-Sur-Mer(D559 then 226). Panoramic view on the lush countryside and
vineyards.
• LE CASTELLET
Perched on a wooded hill above the vineyards, this remarkable stronghold offers an attractive
view inland towards Sainte Baume. Inside the village’s well preserved ramparts, you can stroll
around its cobbled streets and visit the many art and craft workshops.
• SAINT-CYR-LES-LECQUES
Location 8 km (5 miles) westwards Bandol.There is a lovely and very large (2 km - 1,2 mile) beach
of fine sand.To visit : the museum Tauorentum is built on the foundations of a Roman villa ; on display are several mosaics, many Greek and Roman objets, fragments of frescoes and amphoras
which show 2000 years of human history. The Statue of Liberty was installed at the Place Portalis
only in 1903 and not in 1886 as in New-York, but is the work of the same sculptor Frédéric
Auguste Bartholdi. The aquatic leisure park “Aqualand”.
• SANARY-SUR-MER
The charming resort right next to Bandol, all pink and white, is popular at every season. The bay
and the village are fairly well protected from the mistral by wooded hills, dominated to the north
by the Gros Cerveau.
• OLLIOULES THE TOWN OF OLIVE TREE
Direction Sanary, then D11 at 10 km (6 miles).
Old arcaded houses and a Provençal Romanesque church (XIIth century) stand at the foot of the
XIIIth century castle. Arts and craft shops in the town center. To visit : Ollioules gorge (R.N.8
towards Marseille).
• EVENOS
Location R.N. 8, between Ollioules and Le Beausset.
Perched on steep slopes, this old village of Evenos with its winding streets which lead to the ruins
of the 16th century Nebre castle.
• BEAUSSET VIEUX
To visit : Chapel Notre Dame du Beausset Vieux (12th century Provencal Romanesque style) an
exhibition of 80 votive offerings to Notre Dame du Beausset Vieux, with in its side aisle.
• MOULIN DE SAINT-CÔME
Direction St-Cyr-Sur-Mer (D266).
You can visit the olive oil press, regional products.
• SIX-FOURS-LES-PLAGES
Direction D 559 towards Toulon at 11 km (6 miles). From the platform at the entrance to the
fort (Altitude 210 m) a panorama extends over Toulon roadstead, Saint-Mandrier peninsula, Cap
Sicié, Sanary bay, Le Brusc and the Island Les Embiez.
The collegial church has a Romanesque nave and includes an old IV th century chapel. Chapel
Notre Dame de la Pépiole : direction Sanary, then D 63 towards La Seyne-sur-mer.
This chapel, which was built between the IVth century and VIth century, is one of the oldest PaleoChristian buildings in France. It stands in a most attractive Mediterranean setting against the

Direction Sanary, then Le Brusc at 14 km (11 miles). The chapel is a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of the May Tree, also known as Our Lady of Good
Protection, and contains many votive offerings. From the top of Cap Sicié there is a dizzy drop to
the sea and a splendid panorama of the coast from the Islands of Hyères to the rocky inlets of
Marseille.
• LA SEYNE-SUR-MER
Direction A50 at 15 km (9 miles) eastwards Bandol. Stronghold Balaguier (17 th century) : built
in 1636, the fort was recaptured from the English in 1793 by the young Napoleon, it is now a naval
museum. There is a remarkable view of the coastline from Toulon to the Island Levant. Villa
Tamaris Pacha (19th century) : this beautiful building was built ni 1890 and is now an art museum.
Stronghold L’Eguillette (17th century) : built in 1672.
• ST-MAXIMIN - LA SAINTE-BAUME
Direction A50 towards Aix-en-Provence at 70 km (43 miles). Gothic basilica Sainte-MarieMadeleine (15th century) ; Rostan Museum (Régional Museum) ; Cloisters and Royal
Cloisterschool (15th century).

Direction A50 towards Hyères then St-Tropez at 65 km (40 miles). Founded in 1170 by Saint
Bruno.Today, the congregation of Bethléem are living there.
• ENTRECASTEAUX
Direction A57 towards Nizza at 93 km (57 miles). Castle of Entrecasteaux : this austere 17 th century building has been restored and converted into a museum by a Scotsman.
• SAINT-TROPEZ
Direction A50 towards Hyères at 87 km (54 miles). The town of Saint-Tropez stands at the end
of a wild Peninsula, overlooking a bay bearing its name. Its history is exceptionnally rich in feats of
arms and historical events.

• TOULON
Direction about 15 km (11 miles eastwards from Bandol.
To visit : the harbour shelters the French Mediterranean fleet ; the small massif Mont-Faron (pleasant drive or cable-car facilities) ; the zoological garden (breeding of wild beasts) ; the memorial is
installed in the Beaumont tower, in order to commemorate the liberation of the southeast of
France by the Allies in August 1944. (The first section is devoted to the memory of the Allies who
took part. In the second part there is diorama of the liberation). From the terrace, magnificent
panoramic view of Toulon. The maritime Museum is located in the Royal tower, also known the
“Grosse Tour” or Mitre tower. It was built in the early XV th century for defensive purpose, then
served as a prison. From the watchpath there is a lovely panorama of Toulon, with Mont Faron
looming behind it and the roadsteads.
• GRIMAUD
Direction A50 towards Saint-Tropez at 84 km (52 miles). One of the most ancient villages in the
Maures mountains, nestled in the shade of its medieval castle.

Marinestreitkräfte sind hier stationiert. Der Mont Faron zu erreichen per Auto oder mit der
Seilbahn, mit seinem Zoo (Züchtung wilder Tiere) Das Denkmal der Landung in der
Provence befindet sich im Beaumont Turm und wurde am 15.8.84 von General De Gaulle
eingeweiht. Es besteht aus zwei Teilen – der erste ist den teilhabenden Alliierten gewidmet,
der andere lässt die Landung dank seiner audiovisuellen Einrichtung erleben.Panoramischer

Der königliche Turm (16. Jahrhundert) auch “Grosse Tour“ oder “Mitraturm“ genannt, wurde

Bandol’s many seasonal events and year-round
entertainment programme have made the
town a highly desirable holiday destination.
Concerning the nautical sports, the town
organises its own regattas and also welcomes
the Mediterranean’s most prestigious sailing
events. In April, Bandol hosts “Le Printemps
des Potiers”, honouring a fine art developed in
Provence. Every year this event brings together artists and craftsmen specialised in ceramics and pottery. Each year,on the first Sunday
of December, the Bandol wine producers set
up their stands on the port to invite passersby to taste their “nouveau” wines. This celebration attracts a huge crowd and entertainment is provided by street theatre troops.
