A VISITOR'S GUIDE TO
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA'S
VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD
1
WELCOME TO FIVE POINTS
Named for the five-pronged intersection of Santee
Avenue, Harden Street and Devine Street, Five
Points has been a diverse shopping and commercial
district for 100 years. Originally envisioned as a
trolley hub for Columbia’s fi rst planned suburban
neighborhood, Five Points has transformed into
one of Columbia’s busiest and most charming,
pedestrian friendly, commercial neighborhoods.
This village neighborhood plays host to daytime
activities such as sidewalk dining and shopping
and also provides a wide array of service locations.
At night, Five Points turns into one of Columbia’s
most vibrant entertainment districts, home to over
two-dozen nightlife hotspots.
Five Points offers its patrons a unique experience
that cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the
U.S. From funky, independent, daytime merchants
to creative bar and restaurant concepts and
more, the 150-business district leaves a lasting
impression on anyone who visits.
SHOPS & SERVICES
Five Points is a distinctive shopping village with
an eclectic collection of boutiques and services,
including casual and designer clothing, original
art, gourmet goods, unique gifts, fi ne jewelry,
cobbler shops and salons.
DINING & NIGHTLIFE
With a wide variety of cuisines ranging from
Southern, Asian, Greek and Italian, you’re sure to
cure your craving in Five Points. Diners will fi nd
cozy sandwich shops, fine dining restaurants
and everything in-between. Whether you are
dressed up or dressed down, Five Points has a
spot that fits you and your wallet. When the sun
goes down, you’ll find an array of nightlife, lounges
and live music not found anywhere else in the
city.

33rd Annual St. Pat's Festival
The Five Points Foundation has awarded $53,500 to 36 charities and
non-profit organizations in the midlands from revenue generated from
the 33rd Annual St. Pat’s in Five Points. This year’s festival saw great
success, welcoming close to 30,000 patrons into Columbia’s oldest
entertainment district to celebrate all things Irish. The continued success
of St. Pat’s in Five Points has allowed for nearly $1 million to benefit local
charities over the celebration’s 33 year history.

Hollywood - Rose Hill Neighborhood
A very friendly neighborhood where neighbors stop and chat as they
walk their dogs or stroll their babies through the streets past front
porches, lovely yards, old growth trees and gardens. This is a place
where children ride bikes, play in the park and still trick-or-treat door
to door. Hollywood Park is the heart of the neighborhood and is the site
for many annual neighborhood events. The neighborhood association
is vibrant and there are many activities to bring neighbors together.
Hollywood- Rose Hill ("HRH" for short) was established in 1914, and is
bounded by Rosewood Drive, South Marion, Heyward, and South
Harden Streets.
Martin Luther King Neighborhood
Columbia's first suburb, the Martin Luther King neighborhood, evolved
into a community of black artisans, professionals and social reformers.
Many of the residents made important contributions to Columbia and
across the state. The district's concentration of educational facilities
(Benedict College and Allen University) served the south's African
Americans when racial discrimination denied them the opportunities
for higher education. Today, the Martin Luther KIng neighborhood is a
vibrant urban neighborhood, which celebrates the past and embraces
the future.
Shandon Neighborhood
Shandon is one of Columbia’s oldest and largest in-town neighborhoods
with walkable access to popular shopping and entertainment districts as
well as the University of South Carolina campus. The neighborhood
boundaries are Harden to Kilbourne and Devine to Rosewood. Residents
include young families, retirees, and college students. Annual events
include: an Easter Egg Hunt, Monthly Movies in the Park, Road Races
and Home Tours. Although very much a part of the city, Shandon’s large
canopy of trees, neighborhood parks, wide streets, and sidewalks make
it a haven from city life.

University Hill Neighborhood
University Hill borders the eastern edge of the University of South
Carolina and the western edge of Five Points. It is largely within the
original section of Columbia, although some of the streets on the eastern
edge were not opened until the end of the 19th century. The neighborhood
is composed of homes from the late 19th century through the first
quarter of the 20th century, some by noted Columbia local architects
such as George Lafaye and W.B. Smith Whaley. The neighborhood is
subject to architectural conservation guidelines and is listed on the
National Trust for Historical Preservation. Tree lanes and shade trees line
many streets, and it is an easy walk to the university Horseshoe and the
State House.
Wales Garden Neighborhood
An attractive, stable residential community. The large numbers of joggers
and bikers who enjoy Wales Garden each day can attest to the appeal of
this neighborhood's well kept houses and grounds. Close proximity to
The University of South Carolina, Five Points, the state capitol, and Fort
Jackson add to its appeal. The neighborhood is bounded by Saluda
Avenue, Wheat Street, Barnwell Street, Myrtle Court and Wateree
Avenue, Enoree Avenue, the east side of Pickens Street, Heyward Street,
Waccamaw Avenue, and Congaree Avenue.
Wheeler Hill Neighborhood
Up the hill, tucked away at the southern end of Five Points is the Wheeler
Hill neighborhood. Planned in the late eighties and located between the
university and Wales Garden, Wheeler Hill features modern southern
style homes with inviting sidewalks, porches and neighbors. Close
proximity to museums, restaurants, nightlife, schools, local coffee shops
and parks of downtown Columbia round out this neighborhood as one of
both comfort and recreation. Newcomers are welcomed by the university
residents, artists, musicians, businessmen and statesmen that make up
the neighborhood.

The Five Points Foundation
The Five Points Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps
with the operations of neighborhood groups and associations that
are dedicated to improvement through beautification projects, area
sustainability, zero-waste endeavors, and contributions to many of
the area's non-profits that are making similar efforts to improve the
City of Columbia.
On April 21, 2015, the Five Points Foundation was able to award
$53,500 to 36 charities and non-profit organizations in the midlands
from revenue generated from the 33rd Annual St. Pat’s in Five Points.
