Dear Readers,
Kenneth Boldog
Head of
Division K
Greiner
Packaging
International
The “convenience” megatrend is based on
the needs and desires of today’s society.
Convenience food is currently a popular topic
of conversation and in strong demand. Also, in
the future, this segment will play a trend-setting
role. It is a matter of efficient use of time,
having simple meals that require almost no
preparation. And if they are as well tasty and
healthy, the convenience food sector becomes
an acceptably “cool” alternative to cooking –
“cool convenience”.
Convenience food requires convenience
packaging. For this fast-growing market segment,
Greiner Packaging International offers an array of
innovative solutions. Whether it entails offering
LID (LID = Löffel im Deckel, in English: SpoonIn-Lid) packaging solutions, functional K3® cups
or IML (In-Mold-Labeling) noodle packaging,
when the benefits of convenience food are
combined with convenient packaging, there is
always a clear winner: the consumer.
In the end, the consumer is the one who decides
whether a convenience meal or a convenience
pack becomes a success story. We are eager
to meet this challenge and together with our
customers and partners we have a clear goal in
mind: We want to utilize convenient packaging
solutions to make people‘s lives a little bit more
hassle-free.
I hope you enjoy reading our current edition of
unique packpaper!

Sustainability is the most prominent trendsetter
at Pack Expo in Chicago.
For the first time in company history, Greiner
Packaging International appeared at Pack Expo
2012 in the U.S., where a huge number of
industry experts were in attendance.
With 1,965 exhibitors and more than 45,000
expert visitors, the event solidified its reputation

and far-sighted investments in infrastructure.
Great interest in K3® technology
In terms of products, Blue Packaging is most
evident with K3® technology. At Pack Expo
our focus was on K3®-E. The letter E stands for
”evolution and efficiency“. K3®-E packaging
scores with features such as an excellent CO2
balance, low recycling costs, low weight, and Greiner Packaging Team
high energy efficiency.

A special Greek
treat
Traditional Greek yogurt for Bosnia,
Croatia, and France.
Packaging Facts
 Capacities: 150g and 500g
 Material: PS and PP
 Decoration: Dry offset printing
 Technology: Thermoforming
For the packaging of Greek yogurt, the Lactalis Group relies on Greiner
Packaging International. For the Bosnian and Croatian markets, the
yogurt product is distributed in printed 150-gram cups. In France, other
dimensions are preferred, and Lactalis fills ”Yaourt à la Grecque“ in
500-gram pots. Although the pack dimensions are different, there is one
element that consumers have in common in all three countries: a craving
for this dessert‘s typically creamy-Mediterranean taste. When combined
with honey and nuts, this yogurt product turns into a typically Greek
delicacy.
Desserts and yogurt
in multi-packs
Le Petit Basque gains multiple benefits from new packaging.
Rice pudding, semolina- and pudding
desserts, and yogurt from sheep‘s milk
produced by the French dairy Le Petit Basque
have recently been made available on the
market in multi-packs. The company is
pleased to now be operating in an even more
environmentally friendly manner with its new
packaging, ”We reduce waste, thus saving
35% in packaging material.“ At the point
of sale, too, multi-packs demonstrate their
strengths, where the most decisive issue is
their decoration technology – OPS sleeving.
OPS stands for ”oriented polystyrene“.
The sleeves are oriented so that the central
product message is ideally displayed on the
shelves. Greiner Packaging International is
currently the only company offering this
innovative technology for multi-packs.
Family-owned company with a philosophy
of quality
Le Petit Basque‘s company history dates
back to the year 1950, when the Basque
Alcacheburry family settled near Bordeaux
and started the delivery sales of curd
specialties. From the very beginning, their
work was dedicated to a high quality
standard. The company grew
rapidly and since 2008,
it has been managed by
Frédéric and Hubert Martin,
who contribute their extensive
skill and experience in sheep‘s
milk processing.

K3® Who invented it?
The Swiss, of course – more than 20 years ago!
K3® is the original. The combi
nation of letters and figures
stands for ”plastics-cardboard
combination“. Those who want
to find out more about K3® will
discover that its technological
roots are in Switzerland, and
specifically, in Diepoldsau, where
it was invented and patented over
two decades ago.
Creative heads
Peter Akermann and Walter
Schellenberg are regarded as
the ”fathers“ of K3®, and they
have also been the driving force
behind the ongoing development
of K3® at the Swiss location of
Greiner Packaging International.
K3® containers and tubs have
been tried-and-tested throughout
Europe – in the most commonly
used diameters, shapes (round,
not-round), and multi-packs.
Customers highly appreciate
the ability to print on both
sides of the sleeves, which are
frequently used for marketing
promotions. ”We are continuously
developing the K3® technology
with strong commitment and
passion. Therefore currently
we are capable of offering our
customers an unparalleled
diversity of applications,“ said
Jens Krause, Distribution Manager
at Greiner Packaging International
in Switzerland.
Versatile, sustainable,
environmentally friendly
K3 ® packaging holds an
impressive advantage due to its
high-quality look, easy handling,
and diversity. They are suited for
a wide assortment of products –
from organic to convenience and
premium. K3® packaging stands
out with an excellent CO 2
balance and lowers recycling
costs for manufacturers and
fillers. Moreover, it has gained a
distinctive advantage through the
low overall proportion of plastics
it uses in packaging. In terms of
recycling, K3 ® technology is
setting standards as well: The
two components can be easily
separated from each other with a
handy tear-off strip. The benefits
of sustainability offered by K3 ®
are highlighted by a large number
of companies to emphasize
their product messages. A prime
example of this is Yeo Valley, Great
Britain‘s most successful producer
of organic dairy products. For
many years, this company has
underscored its philosophy with
the use of K3® packaging.

Eating comfort from the lid
Originally, LID stood for ”Spoon-In-Lid.“ Now, for Greiner Packaging
International, LID means much more.
Spooning in ice cream with pleasure; stirring cereals or sweets into
yogurt. If you think that for doing so you would need all sorts of
silverware, then you’d be wrong. Proper packaging does it right – it
contains a spoon, fork and/or knife. LID packaging is versatile and
offers a wide array of benefits. It provides for hygienic and secure
reclosure, with folding utensils that cannot be refolded after use. LID
packaging made by Greiner Packaging International can be used on
standard high-performance automated filling units.

Fresh fruit on the go
Triballat Noyal is a company based in the Brittany region of
France that has gained recognition as a specialist in healthy and
savory products for innovative, niche markets. The core of its
corporate philosophy is a high level of respect for nature and for
consumers. Triballat Noyal has established itself in the market
through developing an array of successful product launches in
the segments of soy and organic goods, goat cheese and lowfat
curd cheese. For many years, Greiner Packaging International
has partnered with the company, and has developed innovative
packaging for Triballat Noyal’s speciality: organic soups that have
achieved widespread popularity.
The Danish fruit producer and processor, Danfrugt
Skælskør A/S, provides consumers with easy access
to their daily intake of vitamins, with bite-sized fruit
pieces filled in transparent cups manufactured by
Greiner Packaging International. The package’s handy
convenience is evident in its lid:
An injection-molded folding fork

providing an easy, clean, practical,
and hygienic container solution.

Award-winning
Convenience
Two convenience packaging solutions created by
Greiner Packaging International have received awards.
What does an Asian noodle meal have in common with
American breakfast oats? Nothing, it seems at first, and then a
lot on second thought. Both products are packed by Greiner
Packaging International, and each product and their unique
packaging solutions excel with distinguished convenience
features. And now, both packs have received awards.
Oat So Simple: fast & simple
Breakfast ready in two minutes! The U.S. food producer,
Quaker Oats, delivers on this promise with ”Oat So
Simple.“ To prepare this oats breakfast, 170ml of hot water
is poured into a K3® cup containing the cereal and low-fat
milk powder. The exact filling volume is clearly marked
on the inside of the cardboard sleeve. After filling and 15
seconds of stirring, the cup is covered for one minute with
a clip-on lid. Then, ”Oat So Simple“ is stirred once again
and is ready to be enjoyed, even on the go.
Maximum demand orientation
Originally, ”Oat So Simple“ was exclusively available
in large boxes and bags. The K3® pack manufactured
by Greiner Packaging International is the first singleportion-sized packaging for the product. It perfectly
matches consumer demand, and since its introduction it
has been setting new standards in the ”breakfast-on-thego“ market segment in terms of sales figures as well as
convenience. The cup sleeve is made from cardboard and
thus it provides for optimum thermo-insulation; after filling
it with hot water, it can be picked up without burning
one‘s fingers. The packaging‘s benefits also impressed the
jury of the prestigious UK Packaging Awards. In particular,
they lauded the implementation of targeting to a specific
consumer group, along with its excellent design.
Nissin Soba: tasty & stylish
Nissin Instant Noodles are a classic convenience meal.
Starting out in Japan, they have since become a success
worldwide. The range of Yakisoba Sauces from Nissin
Soba are available in four flavors: Classic, Chili, Curry and
Teriyaki. Its preparation needs perfectly suit today‘s lifestyle
demands. It takes just a few simple steps to be ready to
eat: open the cup, take out the sauce, fill the cup with hot
water, stir in the sauce – finished!
IML (In-Mold-Labeling) is an instant hit
In cooperation with Greiner Packaging International,
Nissin Japan and its European partners have developed
their first-ever IML pack for the popular noodle dishes.
It includes the typical features of the Nissin Noodle Cup
while introducing a fresh and dynamic look at the same
time. For decoration, the cups use IML; it is closed with
a lid that incorporates a draining function. The packaging
received the HUNGAROPACK Hungarian Packaging
Competition Award 2012. This year, it has been honored
with the ”WorldStar Winner“ designation as well.

Innovation Day
to be continued
The premiere of the latest packaging branch meeting
was a total success, and this year’s planning
procedure has already commenced.
With Innovation Day, Greiner Packaging International
has created a particular new highlight in the packaging
branch. The organizer of the event, Robert Obermayr,
K1/K2 Product Group Director and Innovation Manager,
declared, ”Innovation Day deals with communication,
information, and networking. We have made it our goal
to establish this event as an engaging, regularly occurring
inter-branch meeting. With the premiere, the first step got
off to a good start – now, we are working on the consistent
continuation of the event concept.“ The date has already
been determined, and those who are interested should
mark the 21st of November, 2013, in their appointment
books.
Kicking off with “Design in Packaging“
The premiere Innovation Day was dedicated to the
topic ”Design in Packaging“. Eighty participants from
all sectors of the packaging branch responded to our
invitation. The floor was handed over for seven speeches
on interesting insights regarding the current topics in the
sectors: Martin A. Schoiswohl (Kommhaus), Volker Limmer
(Constantia Flexibles), Michael G. Thiessenhusen (Clariant),
Alexander Komenda (Kunststoff Cluster), Andreas Fill (Fill
GmbH), Stefan Ebli (Greiner Packaging International) and
Matthias Giebel (Berndt & Partner).

Perfect dosing in
practically no time
Using the new Bark Dosing System, the required amount
of liquid is quickly and easily measured.
Customers benefit from the cooperation
between Greiner Packaging International
and Bark Innovations when using our
unique liquid dosing bottles. The standard
dosing system offered by Bark Innovations
is integrated into the bottle, therefore it is
not restricted to a defined bottle shape. At
present, it can be used for volumes holding
250, 500 and 1000ml. Greiner Packaging
International produces the bottles according
to the customer‘s specifications, and there
is a great amount of creative leeway with
regards to the use of color, shape and design.
Convincing handling benefits
Dosing instructions such as ”Align botte
properly“ or ”Squeeze reservoir“ are now
a thing of the past. The Bark dosing system
also works in the pack‘s inclined positions –
without squeezing it. Yet, if it is squeezed,
this will not affect the portioned amount of
liquid. This innovative dosing solution works
with precision, and overdosing is simply
not possible. Upon request, the packs can
also be equipped with childproof closure
systems.
It’s so simple –

Professional craftsmen need
sophisticated methods
Greiner Assistec supplies Makita and Dolmar angle
grinders with technically intricate water sets.
While other cutting tools bite on granite, the
angle grinders of Makita-Dolmar employ
their strengths to the fullest. Technically
speaking, these machines are a variant of
the chainsaw. The motor drives a cutting disk
instead of a guide bar. Angle grinders are
used to cut rigid materials, such as stone or
concrete in road and railway construction
or emergency rescues, among others. To
capture the dust generated during cutting,
water is applied. The device required for this
process is known as a water set.
Comprehensive project with unique
challenges
For the Makita Group, Greiner Assistec
was their preferred choice for the complex
production of the water sets. The sets are
identical in construction and are used for
both Makita and Dolmar angle grinders.
Franz Dilly, Head of Division Greiner
Assistec, said, ”During the development
of the water sets, we thoroughly supported
Makita-Dolmar – from concept to serial
production. In doing so, we had to overcome
some unique challenges.“ One of them was
exacting the inner geometry of the plastic
parts, which was achieved using GIT (Gas
Injection Technology). Another challenge
was considering thermal pressure; and
this was resolved by crosslinking. Greiner
Assistec demonstrated abilities during
the project such as its manufacturing of
injection-molded parts, assembly, and
the running of the final functional tests,
including testing for watertightness.

Full service for Bodum
Greiner Assistec produces plastic parts for
the Bodum ”Brazil“ coffee maker, taking over
the assembling and packing.
For the Danish company, Bodum, a great
design at an affordable price has been its
key to success – for over 60 years. From
early on in terms of strategic direction, its
founder, Peter Bodum, has been focusing
on product development that is consistently
oriented toward functionality, quality, and
affordability. With Greiner Assistec, Bodum
has found a partner that equally shares this
philosophy, and their cooperation in the
production of the Brazil coffee maker has
clearly demonstrated this.
International network, one-stop shop
Greiner Assistec applies its success-oriented
strengths to its project. An international
network of locations allows for mediumterm production, assembly, and distribution
throughout Europe and North America.
Presently, at its Polish location in Grodzisk,
Greiner Assistec produces three plastic
components for the coffee maker. After
this, the parts are assembled along with
metal and glass components. As a onestop shop, Greiner Assistec takes over the
entire assembling process, and then packs
each article individually in special gift
packaging.
At the best places
Bodum distributes its ”Brazil“ coffee maker
in 52 of its own shops, as well as in others.
The shops are situated in well-known
areas of major cities such as London, Paris,
Copenhagen, New York and Zurich. In Paris,
for instance, their boutique is directly across
from the opera. The distribution via brandedarticle shops underscores its philosophy:
Bodum promises high quality. And Greiner
Assistec allows them to keep this promise
with its high-quality manufacturing and
assembly support.
