DHARMA LIGHT December 2013 – January 2014 LIGHT OF THE DHARMA Steveston Buddhist Temple 4360 Garry Street, Richmond, B.C. V7E 2V2 Tel: (604) 277-2323 Fax: (604) 277-0313 January 2014 New Year’s Greeting Immeasurable Light and Life. At the beginning of the year, I would like to send you my greetings from Hongwanji in Kyoto. Upon succeeding the position as Monshu, thirty-six years and nine months have passed. I have come to empathize with Chinese master, Shan-tao, as he writes in Hymns of Birth in the Pure Land, “Caught up in everyday life, the days and nights go left unnoticed, unable to become emancipated and escape the sea of suffering.” I shall vow to work diligently until my term comes to an end this June. For many of us, although the passing of time seems to speed up with age, in recent years, changes within society have sped up, making things all the more unsettling. Because these rapid transitions are largely the result of developments in scientific technology and economic growth, they sometimes produce discrepancies in individual lifestyles and societal framework. The gap among socio-economic concerns including business corporations and people’s lifestyles are widening that both domestic and international efforts have not been successful in dealing with such issues. As a result, there is a sense that neither reflecting on the past nor thinking ahead into the future matters, so long as we are content with the present. However, this mentality will result in repeating past mistakes or passing burdens on to future generations. Is it not that the role of Buddhism is to provide us who live in this constantly changing world, with an unfaltering spiritual foundation to live the life which we have received to the fullest? In Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, that foundation is the Primal Vow of Amida Tathagata, namely Namo Amida Butsu. Being unconditionally embraced by Amida Tathagata, we are enabled to accept our own inconvenient past and at this very moment, be joyous of this life we have received. May we all continue to live every day of this year in appreciation of the Nembutsu. January 1, 2014 OHTANI Koshin Monshu Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Email: [email protected] Page 11 DHARMA LIGHT Hoonko 2014 Everything changes, Everything appears and disappears, There is perfect tranquility When one transcends both life and extinction. (From The Teaching of Buddha pg. 316) Happy New Year!! How quickly the time goes by, hard to believe that 2013 has gone by and we are now greeting 2014. With the many activities at the temple, plus the responsibilities with having a family, it seems like my wife and I are always on the go. The recent year-end period was no different as we had quite a hectic time with so many events happening. People often tell us to enjoy it while we are still young as it goes by so quickly. I now know how true this statement is as our youngest, Erin, has now turned ten years old. We no longer have a little baby, for that matter, not even a little child in our household. Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu, also found himself wallowing in the throes of life. Although those around him saw him as an accomplished Tendai monk, Shinran realized that he was unable to find true freedom through the practices he was following, causing him to leave the confines of Mount Hiei in search of another path. This was, of course, the Nembutsu way. On the 18th ~ 19th weekend of January, we will be holding our Hoonko weekend commemorating the passing away of Shinran Shonin. Our guest minister for the service will be Rev. Michael Hayashi from the Manitoba Buddhist Temple. Let us take this moment to reflect on the Nembutsu teachings, which Shinran has left for us. As I mentioned in the opening passage taken from The Teaching of Buddha, ‘perfect tranquility exists when we transcend both life and death’. It is so easy for us to get caught up in our daily mundane lives, becoming unsettled and unbalanced. Yet such a life can lead to a sense of emptiness and non-fulfillment. True peace comes from transcending our individual lives to seeing the oneness in all life. In observing the Hoonko service, let us be mindful that the memorial service is not so much to venerate a historical being, as it is another opportunity to truly listen to the wisdom of Amida Buddha. Even in such a hectic world, peace and harmony can be found by awakening to the tranquility within. Namo Amida Butsu. Gassho, Grant Ikuta Email: [email protected] December 2013 – January 2014 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DECEMBER BOARD MEETING – Hiroko Yoshihara 1. The large jar of change will be counted on Sunday, December 15 in order to determine the winner of the guessing game. Bonenkai lunch attendees had the opportunity to gauge the value of the coins in the glass jar. 2. Annually three joint services have been held with Vancouver Buddhist Temple. This will be reduced to one joint service at Obon so that there will be consistency with our weekly Sunday services. 3. Discussions have been held with the City of Richmond and Gilmore United Church in regards to income raising potential of our temple property. This is looking into the future as Bingo revenue is decreasing. 4. Legacy Plan has $30,000 which has been donated by SBT Women’s Auxiliary. Additional donations from members and community will be appreciated. 5. Gym re-roofing and earthquake proofing were briefly discussed. Plans are being developed for a handicapped washroom. FUJINKAI The Fujinkai is planning on holding its semi-annual AGM on January 26th following the morning service. There are a number of important topics to be discussed at the AGM and your attendance and participation in the meeting is greatly appreciated. Also, please mark off Sunday, February 9th for the Fujinkai Dana Day Service beginning at 10:30 AM. Proceeds raised from the Dana Day Service will go to help with programs determined by the National Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Women’s Federation to which our Fujinkai is a local chapter of. Meditation in the New Year Seiza Meditation sessions will begin in the New Year on Thursday evenings starting with January 9th at 7:30 PM, and Friday mornings beginning on January 10th starting at 10:30 AM.
