1920s and 30s? en you would enjoy the Art
Deco Weekend in Napier, New Zealand, held from 14 to 17 February. ere will be more
than 200 events, including displays of vintage cars and aeroplanes, steam-train rides, a “Great
Gatsby” picnic, named after the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, jazz music and dinner
dances. ousands of visitors and local people dress in clothes from the period, bringing the
style and atmosphere of the golden age of art deco to the streets.

One man, three names
Books Denis M. MacEoin is a retired lecturer in Arabic and Islamic
studies as well as a popular author. He writes books under two different names: Daniel Easterman (thrillers) and Jonathan Aycliffe (ghost
stories). MacEoin, who was born in Belfast, uses his knowledge and
experience of countries in the Middle East in his stories. His latest
Daniel Easterman thriller (German title: Die Templerverschwörung)
comes out in paperback in Germany this month. MacEoin and his
wife, a homeopath, live in Newcastle, England.
100 years ago
New York Grand Central Terminal, which opened
in February 1913, is the train station with the most
platforms in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful. The ceiling in its elegant main concourse is decorated with stars to look like the sky.
